Are cheap reversing cameras any good? $30 eBay wireless reverse camera review

- I've been running my $30 eBay wireless reversing camera for about a year now. In today's video, I share my thoughts on how it's been performing, and if I'd buy it again to hopefully help you decide what's right for your setup!

Exactly the simple straight forward honest review I needed. Thanks
I forked out $600 for a Safety Dave 2 camera unit with 7" monitor. 1 camera is permanently mounted on the top rear of my canopy and I use it as a 'rear facing camera' so it's on all the time. The other camera is mounted at the rear of my caravan. This system works great and although it's not cheap, I have a really good field of view behind the car or the caravan. The night vision is very good, too. When reversing at night, I need to install a decent reversing light at the rear of the car.
Thanks for the info - I'm hearing good things about Safety Dave! I'll get in touch with them to see how much a single camera would be, hopefully not too expensive without the screen.
Nice to know the wireless is not the convenient solution it pretends to be. I purchase a 170 degree hard wired camera for $15 on eBay and it works perfectly. The only real issue is that the super wide angle is great for parking but terribel when driving as everything is too far away to see clearly. I noticed my headunit (very similar to yours) has 2 camera inputs so might get a second one at that price and switch between viewing angle to suit. I guess it depends what you use it for most, but with a canopy like that it's nice to see what's behind you when driving.
Yeah, I think wireless is a bit gimmicky for this particular application, plus by the time you take the additional step of connecting the wireless reciever to power behind the head unit you could probably have run the cable for the camera anyway. Not a bad idea to have the camera usable while driving, never really thought of that application before tbh, good thinking!
I got a parkmate one as my canopy is permanently mounted. Replaces the complete interior mirror and has a dash cam inbuilt. Also has voice commands so can change between cameras or take pictures etc. Hard wired too. Means i can have it on while towing camper and keep an eye on things around the hitch...
Thanks mate, I'll check them out!
We got a parkmate and installed today it works great so far.
Mate you’re a bloody legend thanks for the info and the heads up warning
Dam I was hoping this was good lol, I got a system around the 50 dollar mark on eBay wasn’t too bad, hardwired with a screen, but I really want one on my canopy too, great video
Yeah I was too! 😂 I guess it technically works as advertised (aside from night vision!), just isn't quite up to scratch for something I want to rely on day in day out.
Yah nice video, the whole truth and nothing but the truth / thankyou for saving me $$ will go straight to high end wireless
Mine was trash too in my 4runner. Need to go hardwired.
With reference to a fluctuating wireless video image, can I suggest looking at a simple electronic line (current) filter!! These are only cheap physically small, easy to wire into the system, just a positive at each end & a negative as well. I've just purchased one for myself but its not installed yet & therefore I can't comment further on the job it does. Just be aware though of the quite hostile (from an electronic environment perspective) of the interior of most vehicles (oh for an EH Holden) & hence the need for a line filter to hopefully screen some of those rugged & rough electronic waves that are flying around inside most modern cars!! You have a wireless system (in most cases) as against a wired system with its attendant cables from front to rear. Although the wired reversing camera is a pain to install but it is not as prone I believe to radio interference like the wireless system is!! Hey I'm no expert but hopefully I'm not giving you rubbish information!! For the minimal cost involved you need to try this particular aspect!! If it doesn't work you've wasted more money at KFC or McDonalds & that's an aspect your waist line just does not need!! Just go to & do it!!
You said the wireless receiver is at the back. Isn't it the wireless transmitter at the back?
I got a $40 revering camera off ebay last year, its hard wired as it works great but I think the guy who installed it didn't connect the revering wire as I have to switch to the camera mode on my head unit. Hard wire is the way to go.
Yep, my next one will definitely be hard-wired I reckon!
Thank you! Even though you gave it a poor rating I'm going to buy it anyway, as the hardwired version is only 5 dollars cheaper.
Get yourself an "Electronic line filter" cheap as, easy to install & kindly remember that the interior of a modern car is filled with electronic electro magnetic waves running around all over the show so obviously & consequently you are goiing to experience all sorts of electronic interference by using a wireless system & hence the need for an electronic line filter!! If it doesn't work (I'm still to install mine when I have the time) the cost is no big deal!! Otherwise simply install the cables from the front to the rear of vehicle & most if not all of that interference should simply disappear like Scot Morrison otherwise known as Sco-mo!! (yeah right) & I'm a Kiwi!!
Thanks for the review man😅
Thanks, you just saved me 30 bucks 😂
Fairly pricey ($170 on special) but the Gator GRV90MKT is fantastic
Ok thanks, good to know - will check Gator out!
The signal isn't great because it is made for a normal car, there is too much material between the transmitter and receiver. For the FoV, you can get from 120° to 170°, you just bought the wrong camera.
Hi mate, definitely agree that the wireless signal would be more compatible with smaller cars, the review was more speaking to others with similar setups to show how it performs with a canopy. Regarding fov, I'm aware there are different models, the one I purchased was listed as 170 degrees, which is something I made sure of prior to purchase, here's a link for reference: www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-4G-Wireless-Car-Reverse-Rear-View-Backup-Camera-7-IR-Night-Vision-Parking-Kit/183198757032?hash=item2aa77f30a8:g:NGgAAOSwQiFaYFrU
Cheers,
I was already thinking that for 30$ they are rubbish
