Neil Diamond one of the most well like artist in the world. Not only did he sing, play guitar and write most of all his music, he wrote music for other bands. I would recommend many songs stated by other commenters , You will find some of his most prolific work on his Hot August Night Album (Live At The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles/1972). Two songs with emotional and well written stories expertly done and well worth a listen are "Morningside"; " Play Me"; if you like these two songs a listen to "Canta Libre" on the same album. On a sad note he is not in the best of heath these day so he is not doing shows any longer.

Not sure if I've ever heard this before but I haven't heard it much. To me it sounds like a guy who moves to a new town -- New York to L.A. I believe -- and it's hard in the beginning -- he doesn't know many if any other people and in that loneliness of being in a new place he says to himself "I am!" to try to stay strong.
