This was my first FF game. My mom bought it for me when I was a kid. Neither of us knew anything about the series, so she simply picked something she thought I would like and god damnit, she picked right! To this day, Zack still remains my favourite FF character and it's all because of this game. The guy just felt so relatable and his struggles so profound. He did everything right, was an amazing person from start to finish and yet shit STILL went completely sideways for him. The ending hit me especially hard, in good part because I didn't know he was meant to die so I was actually trying to win that fight. I kept thinking "How many more of these bastards are there?! I'm running out of health here!" By that point it wasn't just Zack struggling desperatly to stay alive and return to Aerith, I was right there struggling with him. Even when I inevitably died, I kept reloading my save thinking "It must be just a bad ending that played because I lost right?" But no, that was it. No matter what I did, Zack was always going to die. It was my first Tragic Video Game ending too, so I bawled like a little baby when I was done... Now I wouldn't call Crisis Core my favourite videogame of all time, it definetly has its flaws. But God be Damned if it isn't the most emotionally impactful game I've ever played!
Wow, very beautifully put, I’m just now getting into FF7 and he’s my fav character too. When you want to believe in the people you want to believe and fight for what you believe is right, you learn that reality is different and people have their own perspectives. But Zack holding his values strong. Honoring the ones that fell before him and keeping his promises. His and Angels will lives on.
The ending was vary sad, probably the most saddest ending that I can remember to any game. Aeris was sending him letters for 4 years with no response. Then the music playing while you're fighting the soldiers. Then all the memories being played during that time. Crazy ending. FFx had a sad ending too, but I think this one tops it.
MikeBNumba6 Yes... it broke my heart. Thinking of Aerith writing those letters, wondering if her soldier would come home to her. Her adopted mom watching her seeing parallels to her story awaiting her loves return from the Wutai war. Zack and Aerith were truly meant to be. The glimmer in his eye that Aerith loved was just the legacy of her first love...
If I remember correctly the thing is that officially Zack and Sephiroth were confirmed to be dead right? So why did she send him letters if it was confirmed to public that they're dead I mean c'mon. But again I might not remember this correctly.
@@velocious8002 Nibelheim was basically kept from everybody. Plus the top 2 most powerful SOLDIERS at the time dying at once is not a good image for Shinra.
I love these tragic hero finales. Like Zack was counting on going back to Midgar to see Aerith again and explain to her all of what happened in the last four years. Just hoping to see her again. But dies just when Midgar is on the view. While is sad, is also true storytelling right there.
can you image starting a story, already knowing how it ends as a writer, the ending is set in stone. It would be hard not to rush, not to put much effort into it, honestly. But I started the game knowing what happened to zack, planning not to get involved or care, but damn, he wan me over, and i even forgot what was coming until i knew i was getting to the end of the game, and i cried hard, lol

@@kdog__ it's not really a different timeline, but a meta situation where square knows that there's 23 years of the original, and we, as the ghosts, know the story of the original and the existence of the compilation that came later, expanding the universe, so it is like they're going to decide what to do with this remake: give us the exact same story, as the fans want for nothing to change, or use the universe already stablished and give it a new direction. The ending fucked me up even more because I played Crisis Core before FF VII... I knew Cloud had the Buster Sword, but I didn't realize how until it was too damn late... This is the only game that's actually caused real tears to shed from my eyes...
+sonicfan2486 Oh wow that's an interesting perspective. Having played FF7 first, I did know what was going to happen but it was still heartbreaking playing that final battle. With the music playing and the countless soldiers, I remember the moment I gasped and was like, "Oh my god, I can't win this. I'm meant to die."
+sonicfan2486 I also played Crisis Core first and cried like a fucking bitch when my main man Zack went out like that. When i saw all those soldiers my heart was like "no.... please... Not like this..."
Damn you're lucky. I was burdened with the confusion of FF7 before even thinking about what came before, and learning the past before playing CC when my adulthood brought to light the events of FF7 and what came before. Still confused really on who was actually in control, Sephiroth or Jenova. A piece of me wants to believe Sephiroth was a casualty of genetic testing that lead Jenova to control him, and a piece of me wants to believe he was a righteous defender of his own beliefs, much like his two best friends.
Zack's honor was by far greater than his love for Aerith. He could have ditched cloud anytime and run to her, but he did not... it just breaks me up everytime.
He probably thinks that ditching Cloud and saving himself, is like betraying not only Cloud or Aerith but also himself. He chose to die true to himself. He died still being the Zack who Aerith falls in love with. The Zack who helps those who are in need, the brave Zack, the hero Zack. And that is why Zack is one of the best if not the best FF character ever.
@@andreseh87 Sounds cringe out of context but trust me once you play it through the end it makes sense cause he's actually asking you the player. Now is it still cringe? idk honestly I was crying too much to notice in my 2nd playthrough.
THIS should have been a movie, not advent children... Zack's story is greater than we imagined in ff7, it's so humane that you can easily feel identified and be surprised even though you know what follows
Then it should be even better as a game. We get to be in the shoes of this relatable character, not just watching it. We get to relive Zack's memories in the DMV. We get to see it break down during Zack's final fight, which we fight as well. This experience is so much better as something we can play, rather than watching it. It's so much more powerful to play the limping, wounded, weakened Zack than just watching him die.
I'm currently playing FF7 remake right now and what got me into the series as a whole was Final fantasy crisis core which was my first PSP game. I wanted to remember the story since it is the prequel. I remember shedding a tear when zack died. It makes my appreciation for FF7 remake much more and sentimental after watching this video. Thanks for the great Recap!
Yeah same, I played FF7 11 years ago and then Crisis Core a decade ago, I never again shipped Cloud and Aerith. Zack and Aerith are just so much better together.
Just watched this so I could get some extra lore for Zack after playing FF7 Remake, and damn, even in these 11 minutes I felt sad when it got to the ending. Now I see why everyone loves Zack so much.
Damn that is epic knowing that Zack's choices and sacrifice were not in vain and affects the world in a hugely positive way. Really, if he didn't persevere in saving Cloud things would've been totally different, which in turn paved the way for Cloud to find himself and fight Sephiroth... The best fucken antagonist of all time
The cool thing is that after the game came out many people started calling Zack the better protagonist for ff7 and that is I think, the exactly what the developers wanted. Cloud isn't Zack but he tries his hardest to live up to the legacy that Zack left behind. And by the end of the game cloud succeds and even surpasses his mentor and friend.....and then clouds character development shits the bed in advent children.
I wouldn't say that he surpasses Zack, but he does live up to him by the end of FF7. Still would have loved another game with Zack as the protagonist, maybe they'll give us the choice in part 2 of the Remake. I like Cloud, but I enjoy Zack so much more tbh.
Actually, how Cloud is in AC makes perfect sense, its a perfect portrayal of someone with PTSD, and there's a lot he feels guilty for. The emo complaints, while I get them, they really miss the whole point of Cloud's journey, he is traumatized and alienating himself, wanting to die. The scene with Aerith before he first goes to fight the 3 remnants highlights this too. Once he has saved Tifa and Denzel where he couldn't save Aerith and Zack, he forgives himself and is back to normal.
@@fiction5559 This is something that grate on my nerves too. I actually preferred Crisis Core to Final Fantasy VII, while the gameplay is too simple compared to VII, all the characters, especially Zack, are some of Square's best. It's a shame it was made for PSP and flew under the radar.
bicnicky Why oh why didn't Square release this for their MAIN fanbase (by a country mile) the console gamers who helped them make their fortune and establish FF as the giant franchise it is today? It CONFOUNDS me! Grrr...
Ehrgeiz wasn't a sequel but a spin off like Chocobo racing. This is the chronological order for ff7 I believe :-) Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII: Last Order Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Final Fantasy VII: On The Way To A Smile Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus
Zack was an incredibly cool character. I always liked Cloud, but, at least since Crisis Core, I've found myself liking Zack way more. He had so much more personality, and really anything that I like about Cloud very clearly came from Zack. Crisis Core was a great little game.
+Deadparrot Plays Facts, this was actually my first Final Fantasy game and my favorite one to date, had no clue Zack would die, and damn did the water works fall
+Crazed Foxx haha that's crazy bro, are you souped for 15? It looks pretty cool, but I'm afraid the main character is gonna. Be a little bitch, lol he's definitely no where near a Zack
"You either die as a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain" Zack could easily left cloud behind and reach midgar but he choses to protect his honor and eventually died as a hero
@@murkiom as cheesy as he is, i woudn't mind if genesis appeared, honestly. We got the original avalanche from before crisis and kunsel name drop already. Genesis doing a cameo would be ok, i guess.
***** There was a part in the game where Genesis was either trying to kidnap Hojo or kill him and Zack (not knowing the guy's a wacko yet) steps in to protect him.
I gotta say dude, this might be my top 4 video on RUclips. I didn't know much about Zach before this, only having played the original VII. I gained a whole new perspective and respect for Zach after watching this video. Thanks for making one of my favorite Final Fantasy games even better since I now know Zachs backstory other than the little tidbits from VII
Great Re-cap, this is the best prequel I've ever played, i'm surprised it never was released on ps3 or ps4. Zack was in my opinion a better protagonist than Cloud. FFVII fans that played this game knew the unfortunate fate of Zack before even playing yet the ending was so sad and memorable and is a top 10 of best memorable games I have ever played.
"The story only gets larger from here so lets cut it down with a recapitation." Ahh! *LOVE IT* everytime you say that! Haha! Love your recapitations! 😀
God... my friend kept telling me about how cool zack was, today I learnt about his story, never thought I would cry over a character who I have never even played with...
This is awesome and exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't really get into the Crisis Core gameplay but really wanted to know the story. Thank you. Now it's just the long wait for the remake.
thanks. never had a psp, these days you can't trust people online to sell one that isn't busted or with a battery cycle thats shot. plus no money for a PSP and suprisingly they never brought this to PSN, vita, ps3, ps4, or xbox one (considering type 0 made it to ps4/xb1) but anyway thanks a lot, I've wanted to experiance this game for almost 10 years being a diehard FF fan but never got to and I came to the conclusion I probably never will so this helps a lot. Also helped explain a lot of ff7 for me that I never understood to this day even after beating it a few times. Thanks. Next i'll watch your dirge of cerberus video since my ps2 gets the disc read error. (Although I did try it back when it worked and wasn't a fan, I would like to know what happens) Your recaps are excellent. way better than any plot summary, really helps paint the picture. keep it up
Hopefully they will incorporate parts of Zack's story into FF7 Remake later episodes ... it's a great chance to make FF7 Remake the complete retelling of FF7's overall story (which spans several games and movies now)
This is a great summary of the game. I remember staying home from high school to play through this entire game, but it has been so long that many of the details have faded. After having beaten FFV7 Remake last week I thought I'd look up the Crisis Core story. Thanks!
Final fantasy 7, 8 and tactics are by far my favorite storylines of my adolescence growing up. The nostalgia is just tooooo good looking back. Now if only final fantasy 8 was given as much love as 7, then I could die happy. Why don't they have full anime series for each, I will never understand. That would be the greatest epic tale in anime EVER. Better than Berserk probly...
When you first play this game, you already know both Zack and Aeris will die but still start the journey this is the what makes this game so beautiful yet depressing
Im telling you Zack is the man!!! Im so proud of that guy and his girlfriend Aerith protecting and watching over Cloud as he goes full on emo and ignores Tifa's advances lmao
To me, it's like Romeo and Juliet ... you know they are going to die in the end but that's not the point. The journey along the way is great and the ending is STILL moving.
This is one of the best final fantasy games of all time. The protagonist is the best too. This game touched my heart the way ff6 did, and the ending was hands down the saddest ending in video game history. Ps. Genesis could kick sephiroth's ass all across the floor.
Cried when I played the game. 4 years after this video is released, and I've all but Cloud'ed the memories of this story from my mind, I'm in fucking tears again. Goddamit. Thanks for making these RECAPitations.
Really hope one day Square decide to re-release this or do a HD remake and release it on consoles, maybe even PC. This game imo has one of the best stories going and the characters are so disgustingly well written. Other than FFIX no other FF comes close to the heights of this for me.

bicnicky Why oh why didn't Square release this for their MAIN fanbase (by a country mile) the console gamers who helped them make their fortune and establish FF as the giant franchise it is today? It CONFOUNDS me! Grrr...
The reason is obvious, to boost the sales of the PSP and they did a fantastic job with it.
Haemon Sheppard Yes, my loose schedule will be 4:Interlude, 4:After Years, 7, 7:Dirge of Cerberus, 6, and Type-0. Thanks for watching!
Awesome. Can't wait to watch them, thank you for the great videos you have done an amazing job on them.
***** Any chance you could do ff7 before crisis?
***** WOOOO! Awesome!
Ehrgeiz wasn't a sequel but a spin off like Chocobo racing.
This is the chronological order for ff7 I believe :-)
Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
Final Fantasy VII: Last Order
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
Final Fantasy VII: On The Way To A Smile
Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus
Thx for reminding me about this game. :-D
thanks for this, my friends were bullying me about the newest game coming out and i didn't know what a zack fair was.
My first Final Fantasy game. I didn't even know Zack would die. I suffered
The ending to this game still puts me in tears every time.
Man, I loved this game.
dude I've have played all these games, and started watching this series from FF1, and god damn you're good at retelling these stories. Dam good job.
This game is utterly AMAZING. Those that can't play it, really are missing a lot.
1. Zack is awesome
2. Zack is awesome
3. Zack is, I feel like there is a trend...
Zack is my favorite character to this day
I'm here so I can refresh my memory on crisis core. I was so young when I played this game. They need to bring it back
Zack was an incredibly cool character. I always liked Cloud, but, at least since Crisis Core, I've found myself liking Zack way more. He had so much more personality, and really anything that I like about Cloud very clearly came from Zack. Crisis Core was a great little game.
All I wanted to re-visit the ending of the game...I forgot that I cried at the ending of this game after I finish it. Now I cry again. FUCK
I feel you, this is one of the saddest moments in gaming for me. So emotional when you actually experience it.
+Deadparrot Plays Facts, this was actually my first Final Fantasy game and my favorite one to date, had no clue Zack would die, and damn did the water works fall
FrOsTyBlUe102 wow reallly? mine too! Crisis core is also my first FF game
+Crazed Foxx haha that's crazy bro, are you souped for 15? It looks pretty cool, but I'm afraid the main character is gonna. Be a little bitch, lol he's definitely no where near a Zack
FrOsTyBlUe102 To be honest, I thought the main character was Zack... I was hyped for a while. :/ I wish Zack have a longer story though
"You either die as a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain"
Zack could easily left cloud behind and reach midgar but he choses to protect his honor and eventually died as a hero
I loved this game, the Price of Freedom still makes me tear up when I hear it. Zack was the true MVP.
I cried so bad in the end damn Zack
Crisis core taught me one thing with its story.... Zach is the standard of excellence of being a great man
criminally underappreciated
man... the price of freedom..
soon as it plays It says he hasn't talked to her in 4 years...
I can't imagine.
I just find the effort needed to do all this (for both documentation and enjoyment) phenomenal. You deserve an award or something my guy
I wish the FFVII remake can include part of this in it
ff7, crisis core, dirge of cerberus and advent children all in one game. a man can dream.
dont forget the before crisis ff7 game which is canon and fleshes out turks secret jobs and the origin of avalanche
It is part of it alright lol
@@murkiom as cheesy as he is, i woudn't mind if genesis appeared, honestly. We got the original avalanche from before crisis and kunsel name drop already. Genesis doing a cameo would be ok, i guess.
careful what you wish for buddy
Had to watch this before the Remake... You did INCREDIBLE man!
They should have let Genesis kill Hojo. It would have been far better in the long run for everyone.
***** There was a part in the game where Genesis was either trying to kidnap Hojo or kill him and Zack (not knowing the guy's a wacko yet) steps in to protect him.
***** And Ardyn from FFXV.
@@kirara2516 bruh when Zack went to protect Hojo I was like "So you've chosen death"
Moff_Man491 Zack*
Ah man this brings back all them feels. Might need to buy this game again and play it.
These FFVII recaps are incredibly well done
Thank you!!
Rick Gomez really did a great performance as Zack
Random but oh well
The soundtrack is simply amazing! Thank you for this
Zack asking what is Sephiroth = Sephiroth 45% TRIGGERED. Genesis explaining the Jenova Project = 100% TRIGGERED. Full blown psycho.
I like how you included Zack's hair in the story
I had to come watch this after finishing FF7 Remake. I’m ready to see what direction it’s going to take based on what we’ve seen.
You are a Godsend.. Thanks for the multiple clarifications in the FF7 installments. You did a good job.
This is awesome and exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't really get into the Crisis Core gameplay but really wanted to know the story. Thank you.
Now it's just the long wait for the remake.
played this game on the PSP loved every bit of the game wish i still had the PSP so i could play it again
That song took me back…
thanks. never had a psp, these days you can't trust people online to sell one that isn't busted or with a battery cycle thats shot. plus no money for a PSP and suprisingly they never brought this to PSN, vita, ps3, ps4, or xbox one (considering type 0 made it to ps4/xb1) but anyway thanks a lot, I've wanted to experiance this game for almost 10 years being a diehard FF fan but never got to and I came to the conclusion I probably never will so this helps a lot. Also helped explain a lot of ff7 for me that I never understood to this day even after beating it a few times. Thanks. Next i'll watch your dirge of cerberus video since my ps2 gets the disc read error. (Although I did try it back when it worked and wasn't a fan, I would like to know what happens) Your recaps are excellent. way better than any plot summary, really helps paint the picture. keep it up
Those 88 letters better be hidden items in the second part of FFvII remake during Zach’s playthrough.
bruh when sephiroth stabbed cloud i was crying while playing for the first time, same with the ending. I love the 7 series so much.
Thanks!
So cloud was never actually a soldier first class.. now it makes sense why that one guy laughs at you when you tell him that in ff7 remake
This game is magic. And the love story between Zack and Aerith is great.
3:52 look at that beautiful seam in the sky texture
But wouldn't it be totally crazy if he like didn't die somehow? 🙃
You've played the remake, haven't you?
well we still dont fully know what the future holds.
When you first play this game, you already know both Zack and Aeris will die but still start the journey this is the what makes this game so beautiful yet depressing
after 13 years we finally got an "actual sequel" from this game, this game is the only reason that i bought PSP at the time and it's WORTH !!
True. Playing the remake seems just like a straight sequel to crisis core, in style and mood.
@@Rihcterwilker IKR, when they announce it that is going to be action RPG like crisis core that is the happiest moment of my life
Perfect summary. Thank you!
thanks for this video i just finshed the game and this is a nice way to put it togheter
I put the game down for a month around the time jump and this helped me get up to speed. THANK YOU
Thank you for saying 'Mid-gar' and not 'Mid-ger'
+Viet Nguyen yes! fucking hate GER....ugh
+kidecchi must be brazillian?
+Brian Suano hahahah i see what you did there
This really needs a port
Cloud - "I won't forget"
Just a pancake Zack - "Ok I believe you"
Im telling you Zack is the man!!! Im so proud of that guy and his girlfriend Aerith protecting and watching over Cloud as he goes full on emo and ignores Tifa's advances lmao
U know why this game was great? Because we all know how the story gonna end but deep inside we hope it can end differently.
That ending with zack and cloud gets me every fucking time.. just watching this video and I’m tearing up.. I love this game
Cried when I played the game. 4 years after this video is released, and I've all but Cloud'ed the memories of this story from my mind, I'm in fucking tears again. Goddamit. Thanks for making these RECAPitations.
Fucking Ending... Sometime I can't finish it, cause at the end, my eyes would full of tears..
Thank you for all the Recaps on the FFVII compilation! They're great. Hope you haven't give up doing a Before Crisis one.
Not at all, I'm still planning on putting it out this year; please look forward to it.
Very good video! Thank you for making this ^_^ it was nice to revisit this amazing story to prep me for the remake
I mean based on this story Zach must be one of the most OP people in the world. He's the only Soldier Fist Class that wasn't heavily augmented.
Considering they made a DLC on Yuffie as part of FF7R, I would say it is highly likely they will do DLC based on Zack. It's a no brainier.
Why isn't this on a bloody Console?
Genesis Rhapsodos You can play it on emulator.....
Really hope one day Square decide to re-release this or do a HD remake and release it on consoles, maybe even PC. This game imo has one of the best stories going and the characters are so disgustingly well written. Other than FFIX no other FF comes close to the heights of this for me.
I almost teared up, well done
Man I loved this game! I replayed it countless times. I enjoyed it so much I remember sending Square-Enix an email asking when part 2 was coming out lol.
One of the best games and storylines i have ever played, Zack is a beast bottom line.
The enemy at 5:18 ain't Genesis. It's just another copy.
