Lemme tell you, being a kid at the time and watching the original version of this movie without having played FF7 was a TRIP. I didn't know WTF was going on... lol

i completely agree with you, i watched this in highschool at the time i never played ff7 either and was lost.
Tbf, by the time I saw Advent Children (original), I'd completed the OG enough times that I could probably justify calling it former employment, completed Before Crisis using a fan translation doc, completed Dirge of Cerberus twice, and had just watched Last Order. And I STILL didn't really glean much besides the obvious cuddlefeat climax of the film.
It was only after I watched the Complete edition, about 5 years later, that it became significantly easier to understand, and even previous community speculation about the events in the movie actually became explicit or relevant to the story.
What I'm getting at is that the original movie made roughly the same amount of sense to existing fans as well.

This movie is seriously underated. Many people complain that Cloud acts like an emo but taking into consideration that he still blamed himself for the deaths of Zack and Aerith it makes a lot of sense he would be depressed.
I love that this movie takes the time to show him grieving and finally forgiving himself and allowing himself to be happy.
On the Way to a Smile (the novels only recently released in English back in 2018) goes into a little more detail. He was fine for a while after FFVII, riding the high of saving the world and beating Sephiroth, but he kept running into his triggers and was going through a pretty bad bout of PTSD by the time Advent Children started. Most notably, Tifa found a delivery order from Elmyra asking for a bouquet of flowers to be brought to the place where Aerith died. Ouch.

Two things I want to bring up about this film
1)This movie was designed for those who are familar with the FF7 videogame. Anyone who hasn't played or even looked into that game, your pretty much screwed in regards to understanding the premise behind the movie, who the characters are, and they world they live in.
2)People for some reason complained about Cloud being portrayed as "edgy" in this, even though this film shows him going through PTSD and survivors guilt, having let 2 closest people (Aerith and Zack) die for his sake. Not to mention him having an incurable disease while trying to find a cure for an orphan with the same incurable disease so as not to fail in saving someone else push the matter further. Honestly, Vincent Valentine is still more edgy than Cloud Strife.

Sure dude. Im sure the character arc for Cloud most fans of the original game wanted, after he overcame isolation, guilt, and an identity crisis in FF7, was a movie all about... how Cloud needs to overcome isolation, guilt, and an identity crisis. Oh and he needs to fight the same villian again. Oh and he needs to fight the last villian alone, just like in the game, even though it makes no sense in the movie. Oh, and all the iconic music from the game needs to be shoehorned in with no tact. Oh, and no character in the movie is allowed to have any kind of arc whatsoever besides Cloud, because he's the coolest.
If you guys like the movie, thats fine. I personally at least like the action scenes. But the way some of you just strawman criticisms people have as them being unreasonable is absurd lol. This movie is one of the most contrived, pointless things Ive ever seen for like 70% of the film, all for the sake of fan service and a handful of action scenes. Forgive me if after playing the original game, that was really ambitious and deep for its time, that myself and others are disappointed with ... what this turned out to be lol
They did my boy Cloud dirty in this movie. It's like he forgot everything he learned during the original game.

Being young when I originally watched it I can say I didn't care for the messy plot, seeing the at the time mind blowing animation of my favorite FF's characters flipping and dipping was enough to love the movie.

Why did people think this movie was bad? Now that I've actually played FF7 and understand wtf is happening (unlike watching when I was younger) it seems pretty solid.

I got the DVD when it came out. It has a special place in my heart. Somber and edgy, just how I like my Cloud lol. If I remember right, thy added extra scenes to help explain the story b/c not many could figure it out.

I first watched this as a kid and fell in love with the visuals and barely even understood the story.
Rewatched it after binging videos on the story of Crisis Core and the OG FF7
That ending hits like a fucking truck after you fully understand it all and how the characters relate to each other. I cried seeing Aerith and Zack at the end because I fully knew how much it meant and that it meant Cloud was finally free of his demons.
This was my entry into Final Fantasy VII aside from Kingdom Hearts. I was confused for many years until one day i finally played the game and suddenly everything made sense. I never felt such eureka in my life.
I was in high school when that came around. Took me a while to get a subbed copy.
I still feel like this movie is somehow the first piece of Kingdom Hearts media in the timeline.
Out of curiosity, can you tell me why you think that please?
@@Andy-qr3hu Maybe not officially, especially since the timing of it comes after the first Kingdom Hearts game, but something about it just screams to me that working on this was the moment that whatever it was in Nomura switched on and he became the Nomura we know today. I don't really know how else to describe it and I'm sure it doesn't make a lot of sense. Just a feel thing.

For sure. Its crazy how much he took from the FF formula and used it 1:1 in the KH series. Others would call it plagiarism but I guess as someone who worked for the same franchise he gets to copie things like magic, characters and overall game mechanics. I always thought there is something incredibly fascinating about all the works Nomura has done and I am always looking forward to them

I began with FF7 Crisis Core when i was a kid. Then in 2020 i started with Remake. After that i watched Advent Children and now im halfway through Rebirth. Man FF7 is just amazing.

I need to watch this as an adult, I last seen the film on release when I was 16. Good thing Crisis Core Remake made me play through FF7 remake and about to start the original again
At the time the movie was released in Japan in late 2005, I had graduated from high school. I was 19. I saw it subtitled before seeing it in English

TRUE STORY: During my birthday last year, me and my entire family watched this movie but not before I showed them a recap video of the original game first.
My father warmed up to Cloud during and after his first viewing of the film!
EDIT: Watching Advent Children during my birthday last year was actually a coincidence because FFVII had it's 25th Anniversary during that time!

Yeah, no lies: there are problems on a critical level. But I can't help but still keep this film in my top ten favorite films. though, before I showed someone this film, I showed them FFVIIMA. That might of added a new layer of humour to this film.
How does this fit in with Ff7 Remake?
It's a sequel to the original, and the Remake looks like it's going to tell its own story. We'll have to see if it fits in after the rest of the remake is out, or if this and Dirge of Cerberus will only be canon to the original FF7.
Based on the number of references to Advent Children-be it through dialogue, character animation, the more human form with the black wing, the fight choreography, the entire penultimate fight of the game, and so on-it either takes place after the movie and/or Dirge, from the perspective of the villain, or the compilation is just being used as a style guide. I'm pretty sure it's not entirely the second one.

Not quite... Remake and Rebirth are sequels that take place after Advent Children, as they assume those events happened already.

@@vale.x8x something happened after the event of advent children, and ff7 remake take place after that. It's kinda like time travel but, changing the decision in that worlf will cause paradox.

Okay, so I’m going to spoil final fantasy 7 remake and rebirth for most people. You need to understand a good chunk of this movie to understand what and why things are happening in the remake and remake sequel.
Spoiler/theory
So it’s a theory that this Sephiroth, the one from advent children broke away from Jenova’s instinct/will at the end when he was defeated. He the used his connection of the livestream and gathered up a shit ton of Jenova essence and crossed over/went back in time. It’s why the whispers exist. Something awakened them causing time to split. Since they work in tandem with the planet, that would mean they have some control over time, which is why Zach is in another time and how Briggs ended up in a parallel timeline.
It’s a bad theory, but it’s the best one we have. It’s why things are so different and how Sephiroth might win or how Zach might come back to fight a Sephiroth cloud mix or something
The time travel part works but there no multi verse timelines. These are all simulations running in the life stream run by both aerith and sephiroth. Its like chess fight between them. Aerith is trying to repair cloud's mind. Sephiroth trying to break it sephiroth has an advantage, having some direct control over cloud from the time cloud got jenova cells injected in him by hojo. Zach is helping aerith but has limited influence in the lifestream compared to aerith.. These are all happening when cloud goes into the life stream. Even though these are simulations, the consequences for cloud are real. TIFA in the end, Will pull cloud back to the real world. Its why sephiroth has been gunning for tifa. So nothing has changed to the OG, advent children etc stream of events. Aerith is still dead etc but the new trilogy only expands on what cloud was going thru

They aren’t simulations. Sephiroth explains near the end that he will use the multiverse where all of the other deaths of the other planets to fuel his use of the black materia. He literally explains and show the multiple parallel universes and how the planet created them (I believe after the crew broke fate in the original). There is even a scene where the fates grab Briggs and send him to a parallel timeline to explain better what happened to Zack.
So in the remake. Zack isn’t dead and isn’t using his link with cloud to stabilize him so Sephiroth’s influence isn’t all consuming. Aerith died, but is fighting a boosted Sephiroth who knows too much (ie future Sephiroth). Finally it’s shown that fate can be altered and changed drastically due to Zack being alive and both Cloud saving and failing to save aerith.
@@deathmastersful the clue is edge of creation. All these multiple worlds, some last, some don't. Its all created and taking place in the life stream. They are LiKE simulations in a computer, like the matrix movies (an analogy) which do have real consequences for ex when a world dies in the life stream, the energy used by hosting that world can now be controlled by sephiroth, separating it from the life stream. The people in that separate stream are real people who died and went into the life stream. Its why aerith was placing Zack in different worlds or STREAMS. One other clue is how materia are considered memories and a product of the life stream. Its all hinting that these battles are happening in the life stream which collects the spirits, the memories, history etc. Its also implying that the life stream is not subject to the laws of time. Its why sephiroth can see what's happening and is trying to change his fate. He does come from the future in our world.But the life stream unfortunately is just that, another plane of existence after death. Its the world where the dead go. Their memories, their powers, awareness etc Its why sephiroth wants to come back again to the real world using cloud and the energy from the life stream he harvested to manifest in the real world. For any of sephiroth's work to bear fruit, he must exit the life stream with the harvested energy into the real world. If not, the life stream can absorb him over time and he doesn't want that.
@@makedate9338 oh! Okay I understand better now, but I don’t think it was Aerith who placed Zach where he is. I believe it was Sephiroth because in the OG Zack is speaking to Cloud occasionally and helping him. When Zach is bouncing around scenarios I believe that is Aerith trying to get Zack in the spot to help Cloud.
I also believe that the simulations are a bit more, because Sephiroth uses the destruction of those simulations to harness more power to either rewrite fate or to control it
@@deathmastersful simulation is just an analogy because its difficult to explain otherwise. Those worlds are true and real but exist in the life stream. However the power they possess can enable sephiroth to return to the real world. . another clue only dead people, those who passed away into the next world like aerith, Zack, Biggs etc are in it coz they are dead. TIFA did visit earlier but cloud is trapped there due to macko poisoning later in the story. . See there aren't any duplicate TIFA's, Barrets or dupes of the LIVING characters because their memories, experiencs, souls haven't entered yet. Marlene only has a connection facilitated by aerith, in essence Marlene just like cloud can connect because aerith gave tiny portion of her memories to Marlene. Cloud's connection is sephiroth but aerith in the life stream managed to short circuit to it

It makes no sense. In a futuristic society, robots are doing deliveries, no people are needed for that. BTW, it is not even that futuristic, since we are living on the edge of it already now.
Ff7 was never just futuristic. In some ways they have superior tech and in others inferior. It's a different universe.
