    What's good about this app is that it can write to an external SSD, avoiding the huge file transfer time - you can just plug the SSD with the assets and use it directly in Resolve. USB IO is the main bottleneck on most phones in this case, but at least several models (OnePlus 8 Pro and up, in particular) are able to push 4K@60fps without issues. Furthermore, there's some work planned to integrate it with another awesome FOSS software called gyroflow, which can get you Sony/GoPro-like software stabilization on a phone. Be sure to check it out when it's done. (it's not done yet)
    As always though, the problem with Android is platform fragmentation, you'd have to look for a phone that allows 3rd party apps to use auxiliary lenses. And of course RAW recording is super demanding to the storage speed.

    • @initialfocus
      @initialfocus  2 года назад +4

      @@NewFreedomPodcast Yeah! Although, it splits the video between phone's storage and the External drive you attach as it writes to both of these simultaneously to increase performance as the RAW video files are enormous and a lot of phone's storage is not fast enough to write data that quickly, it takes like a gig for every few seconds of recording!!

    Finally, nice that you found it Michael!
    Been testing MotionCam for past few months, incredible progress the dev made over that time. To what it is now:) More or less all features are there, just interface kinda missing, but I'm sure through the year it improves, depending on dev.
    As somebody mentioned, if you do next video about this, please mention that it can write externally on SSD through usb-c to usb-c port (yes, port is most impartant part to get sufficient speed, so nvme adapter with usb-c works) and some devices can record even up to 4K60fps (crazy). And container files can be converted on the PC, making this much quicker and enjoyable solution. And vignette fix works on that, just cuts slightly DR.
    On my Mi 11 Ultra i can get all three camera's working with 4K60fps no issues, just the xiaomi has usb-c type 2.0 port, so mostly I do trasfer via FTP to wifi solution.
    As I heard of, phones like 1+ 8 Pro or Find X2 Pro can record up to 4K60fps, just main lens only. 1+ 9 Pro is capped to 30fps. Samsung phones have issues (S21 series) - they do not go over 18~23 fps, for the RAW16 issue. Only known latest working Samsung phone is S20 FE 4G/5G Snapdragon variant, or older models like Note 8/9, S9+ etc. Pixel 6 Pro does provide nice footage, but as I get an opinion from they're owners who tested that, they mentioned that Pixel 6 devices has kinda "prebaked" raw dng, so if wanting max quality possible, Pixel 6 is not the best device to showcase this app. As well as Xperia devices, they do not work at this moment. Wonder if Samsung S22 series would work, because there were issues with SD888 phones, and my Mi 11 Ultra was kinda exception to get that 4K60fps working. Will be doing more showcases on that in near future.
    Good luck!

    Michael, kudos and thanks for starting this discussion. After reading all comments and replies, I think it is very important to retain perspective here: this app IS NOT for the casual user, and it's OK like this. We've known that well ever since the LG V30, a marvel video machine with CineLog, which LG dropped with the V40 and thereafter, in the face of consumer lack of interest. Apps like these cannot be mainstream. With Motion Cam, we are now being taken beyond Log. Guys, DNG RAW on an Android phone is just insane. It is the brainchild of a genius geek, who should be encouraged and even supported financially, regardless of "consumer" interest or lack thereof. Those who read this channel are not consumers, we are informed smartphone users who appreciate technical breakthroughs such as Motion Cam and are happy to use them. No one says the app has to be used in every daily filming, but it sure is welcome when one aims for the best quality possible from a phone camera. The older readers here would also remember the sheer cost of shooting and working with DNG just 10 or 15 years ago - unaffordable but for professionals or casual users with deep pockets. So let's just be grateful for Motion Cam, use it, enjoy it, encourage the creator and share info on which phone models work best with it.

    This is what I'm talking about, the camera phone hardware today really reach its peak but they just make morea and more updated hardware just to justify the high price and new phone instead of focussing on software capability, I think the next step would be phone would record on raw video while on live then after that the processor would going to convert to normal video codec such as mp4 without losing so much quality instead of direct recording of phone while not using the full potential of the hardware, our phone today are so much powerful to process this kind of trick.

    • @matthewhartman7176
      @matthewhartman7176 8 месяцев назад

      NOTHING will stack up to RAW data. RAW data is every bit of information an image sensor can capture. As soon as that capture is written to ANY compressed lossy wrapper (format) data is thrown away.
      With RAW it's not about the phone. 99% of image sensors in smartphones are produced by Sony or Samsung. At this first layer it's all about the physical RAW sensor. There is no corresponding post processing by the phone manufacturer.
      Where the phone brand matters is obviously the operating system the app is coded for and, of course, the hardware that drive it in terms of performance and storage performance.

    If this app is truly capturing the sensor and outputting as a DNG sequence, then yes it's going to be a 16bit raw (12bit log raw) variant for any phone that can normally also shoot 10 bit compressed video. If the phone could only shoot 8bit video then it would likely be limited to 8bit RAW, assuming the phone had the bus speed and memory speed to store it without dropped frames. I'm going to see if my Xperia 1 II can use this at all. !0:1 it ill be limited to the primary camera for this phone if it works. I'll post an update later if it does.

    • @miesto_paukstis
      @miesto_paukstis 2 года назад +3

      Yes, you cant get mirrorless aps-c or ff camera look, thats for sure. And mostly thing is not the smaller sensor itself, but the lens.. plasticy, soo reduced by the compactness, less quality materials etc.
      We should not run from that - what it looks like smartphone. No. But this solves the issue of weird phone manufacturers processing and gives us total control of what the hardware is capable itself. We control the wb, how colors looks like, how to expose, control shadows/highlights, to what level use noise reduction/sharpening or not to use it at all.
      And definately the phones are more capable that average user thought of.
      Sometimes the gap itself its not big if you compare for example mirroless or dslr m4/3 camera from back in 2013-2015 using kit lens and those top end phones which is able to shoot raw.
      Check my latest vid, i shot raw footage on phone in really low light situations. M4/3s cam from those years definately would have struggled with kit lens in those situations.

    There is a solution that you can save the files as a .container, and you can transfer these files into PC, download an extractor from the motion cam github page, and it'll export the DNG into the computer faster rather than using the smartphone. Right when you start up the app, don't click on raw video yet, just select the saving location first, then select raw video and try recording. There should be .container files in that folder and you can transfer em easily without going to the manage video button. Also I tried with my LGv40, budget smartphone but works nonetheless, it works well on Internal storage rather than external SD storage in terms of performance.
