    Visited here last week. My son remarked it was like walking on Mars. A very alien landscape. Visiting the Discovery Centre and getting the background of what the Tablelands actually are was a huge plus to the overall experience, and highly recommended.

      It really is like walking on another planet. Void of anything at first glance. Yes, having the info really helps. I also know they do guided ranger talks of the area which I'm sure are also really quite good!

    This is kind of amazing. I had no idea the earth's mantle is exposed anywhere. That is so cool that you can just walk on it and hold it in your hands. I would love to see this in person one day. Thanks for taking us along for the hike!

      A lot of people don't come to the east coast when they visit Canada, so many miss out on great parks like this! I do want to focus more on our National Parks and Historic sites. We have so many, and they are either really beautiful, or packed full of great history. I think they would be really great subject matter to present.

    Great video man!!!!
    Mantle rocks are indeed located about 5-10 km beneath the oceanic crust and 35-40 km beneath the continental crust. There's one more spot where mantle rocks are exposed at a place in Oman called Oman ophiolites...

    • @DestinationEarth
      @DestinationEarth  Год назад

      Oh that's cool! Someone else has mentioned they thought that maybe Australia had an area where the mantle was exposed as well, but I haven't looked into it yet!

    The Tablelands rule! I'd say the best spot for the red chairs would be up on top of Western Brooks Pond, hiking the Grand Traverse (if we were going by pure beauty of the park). Had a chance to hike that beauty in 2000. Way to grab a hold of the earths mantle! Keep on rocking it Josh, happy 2021!

    Hey Josh! Beauty boardwalk trail! That water must have been amazing to drink because you can't get any fresher than that! How much does a Parks Canada 🇨🇦 pass cost normally?? An annual American National Parks pass costs $80 US.

    • @DestinationEarth

      It was so cold and fresh, it was amazing! An year pass for adult is ($70 can or $55 US) and a family pass is ($140 can or $110 us).

    It was great visit and hike. October weather was lovely for a hike but strong wind made it hard. The mantle is very unfriendly to any vegetation. Amazing place with the contrast on the other side of the road.

  • @alexriter278

    There are at least nineteen locations in the world where oceanic mantle is exposed on the Earth’s surface. The exposed mantle sections or ophiolites are: 1) Coast Range, California, USA, 2) Ultramafic rock sections near Baltimore, Maryland, USA, 3) Central Andes, Argentina, 4) Bay of Islands, Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland, 5) Lizard Complex, Cornwall, Great Britain, 6) Northern Apennine, Italy, 7) Troodos, Cyprus, 7) Central Eastern Desert, Egypt, 8) Semail, Oman and United Arab Emirates, 9) Naga Hills and Andaman, India, 10) Kohistan Arc, Pakistan, 11) Dangqiong, Tibet, 12) Zhongcang, Tibet, 13) Dongwanzi, China, 14) Macquarie Island, Tasmania, Australia, 15) Yakuno, Japan, 16) Horokanai, Japan, 17) Poroshiri, Japan, 18) Zambales, Luzon, Philippines, and 19) Dun Mountain, South Island, New Zealand.

    • @DestinationEarth
      @DestinationEarth  Год назад

      I hope you do get the chance to see this in person! Of all the trails in the park, this would be one that would cater best to those with mobility issues. Not 100% flat, it's one of the most level and shortest hikes in the park, so it may offer you the best opportunity to experience this magical place. Good luck and enjoy when you go!

    I don't get the significance of the exposed mantle. Isn't it the same with anynother bedrock or mountains which were pushed up by tectonics ?
    Just trying to understand it...

    • @DestinationEarth
      @DestinationEarth  2 года назад

      Regarding the rock itself, yes, I believe that is true - the rock (mantle) itself is nothing too special. What's special is usually this mantle is usually buried really deep in the earth (on continents it's usually buried under 30 km worth of "crust"). So having shifted so much is quite an amazing site, and something only seen in a handful of places across the globe.

  • @alexriter278
    @alexriter278 2 года назад +1

    Peridotites contain more magnesium than iron. Crustal rocks typically have more iron than magnesium. Your photography is lovely, but you should have done a little more research because your video contains some serious errors. The Bay of Islands Ophiolite exposed in Gros Morne National Park is one of at least nineteen ophiolites or sections of the mantle that are exposed on the Earth's surface. See my other comment below for the locations of the other eighteen upper mantle exposures.

    Wow I can’t believe that is Canada, incredible how it’s the earths mantle. Don’t take any alien DNA out of the park, you can get fined for that 🤪

    • @DestinationEarth
      @DestinationEarth  3 года назад

      It's such an amazing part of the park. It's no wonder people come specifically to hike this place. I'm more worried about what the aliens would do! lol. Luckily for them we didn't do much gene sequencing in any of my academic studies (despite being a BIO major), so I wouldn't really know where to start, lol.
