  • i diagnose and repair the bad shifter bearing cup in my mk3 1.8t swap jetta. it has an 02j transmission conversion with an 02j shifter box/cables from an mk4 gti.
    this fix shows you how to do it in car for any chassis, and shows how to remove stripped bolts with normal hand tools

    There’s an OEM shifter box swap that basically bolts into the Mk3 from the Polo, if you can get your hands on it. I have it in my Mk3. Also you get a lot more space to work when you remove the plastic shift box cover on the center console.

      With the mk4 box you literally only make one very small bracket for the mk3.
      I get the o2j boxes/towers from the pick and pull for about $30 so it makes sense to just spend the 30min-1hr making the bracket to fit.

    Whats up man, I have a mk3 12v swapped Cabriolet. My shifter is like in neutral when in gear it's pretty sloppy..but my real problem is that my clutch pedal seems to loose pressure and I have to pull up with my foot.. started with 02A then I swapped a 02J. Also have diesel geek short shifter installed on transmission. I changed the slave and master with advanced auto parts.. now I changed slave again with febi.. 02A slave. Is my problem because I need to change to a 02J slave and master? I'm from Southern York county pretty cool you seem kinda close maybe.

      They never bleed right with normal bleeding.
      Best to use a pressure bleeder or mighty vac.
      If you rebleed it with them and still have the same issues and no leaks then i would replace the slave.

      @@SmithsEuro I'm on second slave, I also blew transmission so different trans new clutch pressure plate flywheel bearing...still same

    Someone get this man a Sigma 5 shifter.

      Honestly not a fan of the diesel geek shifter. Too much bs to pull when servicing.
      Big fan of making my own short shifter out of the oem parts. One day i might make a diy of that.

      @@SmithsEuro Interesting take! I agree that those dozen or so little hex nuts and bolts are huge PITA. Of course it all depends on how often you're pulling the trans VS the advantages and feel of the Sigma 5. I'm interested to see more of this home built shifter.

    About how much do the o2j shift box parts go for? And can I just swap out the tower on an 02a? Or do you have to use the whole trans hydraulic clutch and stuff?

    • @SmithsEuro
      @SmithsEuro  3 года назад

      02j shifter conversions vary. I always go to the junkyard and pull them. $30 or under at the yard and id say well over $100 buying private.
      You need the 02j tower and cable box. Tower literally bolts into the 02a trans.
      Hydraulically and clutch wise the 02a 02j are the same. Some slight differences between them. 02j uses a plastic slave/master where 02a use metal. Same same but different. Basically if you have an 02a you just reuse your slave/master on an 02j trans if you swap it in. No big deal.

      @@SmithsEuro awesome! So all I need is the tower, cables, and shift box?

    • @SmithsEuro
      @SmithsEuro  3 года назад

      @@jakekaye6545 yup thats it. Get later model ones that are pin style. Easier to find maintenance parts and short shift kits. Late model mk4 like 01 up.
      Then you only have to fabricate 1 bracket for the box to mount the mk3(if thats what you have)
      Or most people take apart the box and run really long bolts stacked with washers then drill 2 holes in the tunnel.

      I bought the tower, box and refresh parts for about $300

      I work in linthicum at induktion motorsports.
      We did a 3.6 in and mk4 gli last year. Give ed a call he should have the invoice and be able to give you a good accurate quote.
      I cant do it as a side job for a while if you’d rather do it that way. Im moving soon, so i wont be able to take on a project like that for a little while my self.
