      +Wisecrack In your Julius Caesar episode you failed to mention that Julius Caesar never said 'and you to Brutus' in Latin 'et tu Brute'. Most Historians claim that he didn't say anything but as soon as he saw Brutus and began to weep, covered his eyes and gave up (he was fighting like a mad dog until he saw Brutus). Those who differ claim that he said 'and you to my child' there is reason to speculate that Brutus was a illegitimate child of Caesar, because there isn't really any other reason to explain why Julius was so nice to Brutus his entire life even intervening to save the life of Brutus after the battle of philippi.

      It's happened historically, such as with the Ptolmeiac dynasty in egypt, which was to keep their blood 'pure' as they were ethnically macedonian, not egyptian. The rate of birth defects increases with each successive generation that is inbred, but at first the chance for negative consequences is rather low (I forget the percentile) even if between brother and sister, and is much smaller between first cousins. In many places marrying first cousins is still a tradition, like in certain places in the middle east.

  • @chadtindale2095
    @chadtindale2095 9 лет назад +807

    I love it, but you missed one of the best themes in the story, the theme of protagonist hating. Hear me out.
    Robert thought himself a protagonist when he conquered the seven kingdoms. He figured his story ended when the war did. But in reality, the story doesn't even start until his best days are behind him. Now he thinks he's living happily ever after enjoying all that's entitled to victorious protagonists, when the people around him are conspiring to kill him. But that's not all. He's also bankrupting the kingdom with his excessive living. Turns out that the protagonist conquering the known world, doesn't make a great king. It's not a good storybook, but reality isn't one.
    The next Protagonist is Vysaries. He thinks that being "born" into Royalty makes him the protagonist. He deserves the throne and his story to claim it begins with selling his sister to Kahl Drogo. But Drogo doesn't care about his throne or kingdom, so he doesn't move quickly. But because Vysaries thinks that he's the protagonist, any delay is simply ignoring the story. So he gets mad and Drogho finally puts him down ending the story before it begins.
    John Snow goes to the Night's Watch in hopes of finding a noble brotherhood, but instead finds thieves and rapists. He's not chosen to be a ranger, and his duty is to fetch water and food. John sees his protagon-ism fade quickly. Jaime thinks being a knight will make him happy, but one king is crazy and burns people, and the next one is cheating on Jaime's sister. Sansa thinks she's gonna marry a handsome prince and be happy, but the prince is an asshole.
    Most people see themselves that way but perhaps the biggest one is Ned himself. and the best part is, that we, the reader get convinced that he's the protagonist too. the joke's not just on him, it's also on us. He thinks he's won his ending to his story. Now they just have to keep doing what they're doing and avoid being characters in anyone's story. But when he finds out about John Arryn, he goes off and tracks down the cause, but instead of conquering the odds or dying a martyr, he just dies, and it isn't victorious nor meaningful. And for insult, it's done with his own sword, Ice, seconds after he basically admits that Joffrey IS the real king, so his own goals aren't even achieved by his death.
    A lot of this comes from the stories they've heard. People like "Nan" have been telling the Stark Kids stories. Stories of things up north, stories about kings and knights. Even most of the songs they sing throughout the series tell stories. And stories typically have protagonist driven narratives, and end with that protagonist meeting goals. But none of that's real. And the one dude who gets it is the one who reads the most stories.
    Tyrion knows he's not the protagonist because protagonists, aren't third born. They're not dwarfs. and they're not readers. Tyrion was born when his mother died, it's not a solid origin story, but he always wanted to be better. He read books, and one day he met a girl and thought he rescued her. He then married her and thought he was a protagonist getting his happy ending. But it turned out, according to his father, she was a prostitute and didn't love him at all, as he thought. So after that, the guy stops thinking of himself as a protagonist, and adopts a much more practical approach to his own life. Because of this, he isn't worried about being king, because he knows that he's not the protagonist, and him ending up on the thrown isn't really in his cards. And he also knows that people who dream big, suffer big.
    Another theme along these lines is the power of names. Names are everything to these people but in reality offer nothing to the person who has them. John wants to be a Stark, but instead gives up the bad name he has. Little Finger's biggest problem with himself is that he wasn't born with a name and is trying to make one. Lannisters think they're special because of their name and Vysaries thinks he should rule because he's the only one with the right name. Ned only doesn't think Joffrey should rule because he shouldn't have the right name and not because he's an asshole who would be a terrible ruler. That's why when pressed, he suggests giving the thrown to Stanis, Robert's brother, because Stanis has the right name.
    During one scene, Caitlyn Stark is taking a bath, but the water is so cold she can't stand it. She complains that being a Stark didn't come with the ability to tolerate the cold. And Danerys can't stop expanding her name everytime she goes to a new place. Everyone who declares themselves king comes up with elaborate names for themselves and names others give them. Until their name is so large that they have to get someone else to say it. And they think the name gives them power, but it rains shit on those with big names and those with short ones.
    And speaking of names. Notice that everyone's naming swords. Ice, Fang, Needle, and if you go further in the books. there's also Oathkeeper, Longclaw, And a whole bunch of other ones. But none of the swords really give the wielder power, named or not. Fang, Joffrey's first sword winds up in a river having never been used. Aria's first kill with her sword isn't a soldier, or an attacker, it's a little kid. And Ice is only used a couple of times in the story. Once to kill a deserter to the watch, and once to kill Ned himself. There's another time, but it doesn't really do anything in that scene. This shows that the sword isn't powerful, it's just how it's used. Lots of people die by unnamed swords, and swordsmen with named swords are just as unlikely to win with them as those with unnamed swords.
    Probably the best example of this is Cerio Ferrel, he doesn't use a named sword. In fact, he only ever uses a training sword, because it's literally just as good as any named blade. Swords are just objects, like Names or Gods. None of them give anyone any power. None of them make anyone any better. But these fool characters just keep putting their faith in names, swords, gods and thinking that being the main character of thier story is gonna work out for them. But reality hits you hard, bro. And most of them die because of it.
    Hope you liked the alternative analysis. I like books with themes. And SoIaF has a ton of them.

      Digging into the backstory, we can even see that the whole rebellion and the problems that came with it, spring from Rhaegar thinking himself the hero of his own story.

      Chad Tindale Great Analysis. *SPOILER ASOIAF AHEAD* In later books, the "name" thing comes more down to people losing something upon which they based their identity. Martin loves to play with the subversion of identity, so for example Sansa Stark becomes Alayne Stone, and Arya literally becomes no one. Jaime Lannister, loses his hand which is what gave him the identity of Kingslayer. Dany is forced to lock up her dragons. Most viscerally, Theon loses his penis and is mockingly renamed as Reek.

    • @sadesemolu
      @sadesemolu 9 лет назад +8

      That theme reminds me of the game borderlands. Not sure if you played it before, but basically the villian proclaims he the protaganist of the story bc he trys to bring order to a chaotic world. While you the player trys to stop him by killing people, stealing and joining gangs. But I guess you could say the same about almost every hero verses villian story.

    A few little errors.
    1- Cersei was planning Robert's murder long before Ned Stark found out about Joffrey's true parentage.
    2- Roberts death was caused by a hunting accident with a boar, but that was probably caused by Cersei's cousin Lancel keeping him really, really drunk.
    3- Robb started the war before Ned was killed, it began as an attempt to get Ned back.

    Well, since you're are talking about the books, it's worth noting that the undead are not the Others, they are the White Walkers. The Other is another mystical crazy shit, that hasn't appeared in the show yet, event tough they were in the first chapter of the first book.

    • @RoboDragonJediKnight
      @RoboDragonJediKnight 9 лет назад +6

      Ewertton Tadeu No White Walkers are an alias for the Others. The people worshiping R'hollor such as Mellisandre believe in a great Other and R'hollor. The White Walkers or Others are sentient and have unknown goals unlike wights. The zombies that Jon saved Jeor Mormont from were known as wights.

    • @Yodah97

      Timothy Connor they are just structured differently than the first 3, and FYI Martin had only intended for the series to be a trilogy when he first started writing. After all of the huge events on book 3, 4 and 5 had to be a bit more quiet and contemplative for the contrast. They build up parts of the world that are still foreign to the reader, introduce new characters, and sew intrigue for the climatic finale that we're all waiting for. Book 4 (A Feast For Crows) is my favorite because of this, I think it's the most underrated book in the series.
