After living in Guadalajara, Jalisco for over 4 months, we found a LOT to love about it. The activities, the people, the weather, and more. However, many people have told us they're planning to visit or move to Guadalajara after watching our videos about it. We felt obligated to share the "other side" of the story: the ugly side of Guadalajara, Mexico.
So what is it like living in Guadalajara as an expat? Well, we answer that in many of our other videos about Guadalajara, Jalisco. But if you're wondering what might be some of the downsides of traveling to or living in GDL - this travel vlog is for you.
These are things that are less desirable or possibly deal-breakers about GDL, México for some people. Hope these help you learn a little more about one of our FAVORITE cities in Mexico, Guadalajara.
    ABOUT US (MADDIE & JORDAN)
In January 2018, we sold everything we owned in the US (except our husky Laska & what fit in our tiny, tangerine Prius C3) to travel the world-starting with Mexico. Since then, we've been making travel videos about our life in Mexico and the new experiences we encounter while traveling the world. If you'd like to join our shenanigans, subscribe to our RUclips channel. You can also poke around our social media to find out what we’re up to each week.

Guadalajara is my favorite city in Mexico. I've lived her for 8 months now, and I'm still happy here. Part of it is that I thrive in a faster paced city; I lived in New York City for 25 years, and San Francisco before that, so the slow pace of most cities (like Merida or Veracruz) puts me to sleep. Guadalajara feels right. It's a great walking city, too - although I do carry a small flashlight in my pocket at night to help me avoid holes in sidewalks. It's no more dangerous to walk in at night than the cities I've lived in in the USA - and feels safer than NYC in the 1980's or SF in the late 1970's.
This video was done in a newer part of town - which looks more like any U.S. city. I prefer the older neighborhoods, with houses built against each other, local mercados, and small stores selling just about anything you could want. Between Av Americas on the East and Calle Independencia on the west, between Calle Jesus Garcia on the north and Calle Juan Manuel on the south, excluding the Americas neighborhood - those are my favorite neighborhoods - and they're pretty different from the neighborhoods Tangerine Travels videos. Well, and Mexicaltzingo, which is one of the oldest and most interesting parts of the city to me, but which is a mix of old blocks, new incursions, and broad avenues driven through in more recent historical times to carry the city's traffic. They are sometimes described by gringos as sketchy looking - but neighborhoods where old ladies and moms with kids walk around at 8 or 9 in the evening can't be all that dangerous. And a lot of sketchy looking people here turn out to be ok if you end up talking with them for one reason or another. The general building helper at an Airbnb apartment I stayed at, for example, looked a bit scarey when I first saw him - I didn't know he worked there, and I thought unkind thoughts. But I said "buenas tardes" anyway, to see how he'd respond, and it turned out that he was friendly, helpful, spoke a little English and did odd jobs around the neighborhood. So take a moment before you judge here. Just be careful like you'd be in any city, and call an Uber if you get spooked.
One of the city's pluses, for me, are the trees - there are lots more trees in the older parts of town than in the older parts of the other cities I've visited. It's worth dealing with the roots - which are amazingly wonderful sometimes.
In more residential neighborhoods, especially the older central neighborhoods I like most, many people still say "buenos dias" or "buen dia" in the morning, "buenas tardes" in the afternoon and "buenas noches" in the evening when they pass you. It's a neighborly greeting - because while you're in the neighborhood, you're part of it's life. The "rules" for when you say it and when you don't are flexible and you pick up on them pretty quickly. I wasn't expecting this in Guadalajara, although it's common in more tranquil cities like Merida. But the neighborhoods I like here are still very much like the Mexico I knew decades ago.

Marta Guy The problem with that is that most "slang" is actually just Aztec loan words, and reviving Nahuatl will be that much harder by shaming people out of a broader vocabulary.
This was a major issue for Ireland as they attempted to revive Gaelic, as the people were shamed and insulted to use "slang" which was really just the Native tongue refusing to die.

I'm from Guadalajara. When I read the title of the video I was expecting something completely different. I'm happy to see that you enjoyed so much Guadalajara that even the ugly part doesn't sound as ugly.
I would say that something that is affecting most cities in Mexico, sadly, is crime and violence. Let's hope Mexico can recover from that soon because as you're experiencing, our country is beautiful, rich and welcoming.

Hi John. Guadalajara is a beautiful place to live with all the advantages of a big main urban destination but not as crowded and messy as Mexico City. If you can choose, it's a good idea to live in Zapopan that is part of Guadalajara's metropolitan area.
Guadalajara is a vibrant beautiful city with an amazing weather, lots of activities and places to visit. The crime and corruption problem remains sadly but it's unfortunately generalized in the country. Just keep the regular caution measures that you'll have in any major city (like New York, Paris or Madrid). Avoid bad neighborhoods, don't display valuable items, park your car in safe places, ideally paid parking lots, avoid being distracted when walking on the street and don't trust strangers.
Another issue is the traffic and bad drivers, that's a problem that has been raising due to the population growth.
I lived very happy in Guadalajara for more than two decades and I really enjoy it when I go back to visit.
Wish you the best in this new endeavor. You'll love it.

Please please please never say there are too many trees... Temperatures have been getting higher and higher every year in Guadalajara because government or private investors keep cutting down trees for building purposes. Also contamination and increase in floods are cause because of this. I believe repairing sidewalks is a low price to pay for the job they do.

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  5 лет назад +7

We are all for the trees. Keep them all! Not to mention cleaner air and the coveted shade. We don’t want anyone to get rid of any. 😋

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  5 лет назад +3

Think of it like this: For the price of repairing one small portion of a sidewalk, you could probably plant 100+ trees, maybe 1,000+ elsewhere. After all, planting a tree involves nothing more than getting seeds, sticking them in the ground, and letting nature do the rest of the work. I'm not saying have fewer trees in general, I'm totally in favor of having a lot of trees!

    •  5 лет назад +10

Trust me, it's not that easy. I'm friends with several environmental engineers and I myself took some classes during college. The vast majority of threes that are planted don't reach maturity, and while they're growing they don't have nearly the same capacity of CO2 absorption and temperature regulation that grown trees do. The trees near the Centro of Guadalajara have 30, 40, 50 or more years, it would take decades for young trees to contribute as much as they do. Even when they grow where the trees are is as important as how old they are. Even if when fill the outskirts of Guadalajara with trees, the inner parts will get hotter and more polluted if we keep cutting down trees. I'm sorry about the long comment, have no doubt I live the videos you make (I've probably seen 90% of them) and I respect everything you said in this video, but this right now is one of the most important problems Western Civilization is facing.

Yes, GDL is more expensive because it has a higher cost of living: salaries, real estate are the highest of the region. Like any big city around the world like: Singapore, Buenos Aires, Sao Palo, etc. GDL has been through like the last 500 years, the capital if you like, of the west region of the country. That have attracted trade, commerce and few factories/industry to the city, and people. Since colonial times GDL has been relevant, at that time, its name was: Nueva Galicia

It's kind of funny. I'm living in Ho Chi Minh City, and the glorietas in Guadalajara look pretty organized and peaceful compared to here ;)
It also reminded me of a comment my dad made to me when I was complaining about the traffic in Tijuana 10 years or so ago. I said, dad the traffic is insane! There are no rules! He replied, there are rules son. You just don't know them. Ha. So true.

If it means anything, you guys helped me out a lot. I’m considering making the move to Mexico very soon, and Guadalajara was at the top of my list. Weirdly enough, I’ve always had this serious fear of flooding (coming from New York where it just doesn’t happen and also a traumatic incident I faced as a child). I’ve always avoided water even, won’t go in a pool where it goes above my shoulders. I’m very serious about it. Not to say I couldn’t overcome that fear, but I think it’s best I look elsewhere but at least close by until I’m ready to. I had no idea, I didn’t find that anywhere in my research. I appreciate these videos. All of them. Especially the more informative ones that talk about things that might not always promote the area you’ve chosen to live in. It’s real and actually helps. Thank you.

When I got married I moved from Torreón, Mexico to an Airforce Base (Tinker in Oklahoma) I got sooooooo depressed from not only being uprooted and leaving my everything (family and country) but because of THE LACK OF NOISE in the US.
I HATE that neighborhoods are cementaries here. I'd be so happy living in a bigger city in downtown. LOL! My husband thinks I am crazy, but it really depresses me. I need neighbors blasting their music, boys playing outside my house hitting our walls, trucks and public transportation buses and people talking while they walk outside my house, vendors yelling "Gorditaaaas!" or whatever all day everyday. Hahaha. Over 10 years in the US married to an American and I still don't get used to the lack of noise and I never will.

I have lived all my life here in GDL(23 years) and I can tell you that the population has grown a lot. The first sign is the traffic, the second one is the people from outside, I mean from others states(AKA Michoacán, Colima, Nayarit,Edo de México, CDMX), also this migration brought also more dirty streets. I remember the streets were cleaner before, 10-15 years ago. Still I love my city, and as engineer and as coder(programmer) I like the vibe of a techy city. Enjoy Guadalajara.

That is so true, the less thing that i want is to be disrespectfull with other mexicans and i´m not xenofobic at all, but the most mayority of people that come from other parts of Mexico don´t show any civic behavior, or they hate our city, that is what i´m thinking, i just can not get use to see the city this dirty, lot of homeless people in the streets, with all the garbage and dirty arround them, that is something as a tapatio i will never get used to, it seems our goberment will have to take harder actions in order to avoid this type of migration, after all this can colapse our city, there are no values at all on most people that is comming, and the city is loosing completely their personallity, due most of it´s inhabitants are no longer from here. And if we publically mentioned it we get attacked as well by the rest of the country, if they speak bad of our city and we tell them those problems are due to the big mayority of inmigrants, as well we get attacked, so as jaliscians we have to always be defending ourselfs from the rest of the country that still carried their primitive behaviors.

On the topic of Glorieatas (granted he is describing the late 1940's)
    From "On the Road"
    - No mufflers are used on Mexican cars. Horns are batted with glee continual. ‘Whee!’ yelled Dean, ‘Look out!’ He staggered the car through the traffic and played with everybody. He drove like an Indian. He got on a circular glorietta drive on Reforma Boulevard and rolled around it with its eight spokes shooting cars at us from all directions, left, right, izquierda, dead ahead, and yelled and jumped with joy. ‘This is traffic I’ve always dreamed of! Everybody goes!’ An ambulance came balling through. American ambulances dart and weave through traffic with siren blowing; the great world-wide Fellahin Indian ambulances merely come through at eighty miles an hour in the city streets, and everybody just has to get out of the way and they don’t pause for anybody or any circumstances and fly straight through. We saw it reeling out of sight on skittering wheels in the breaking-up moil of dense downtown traffic. -
    Jack Kerouac
You just have to learn to go with the flow. It is less chaotic now.

I live in Guadalajara and I really love it ❤ I think it has everything, tranquility (yes I've said tranquility), delicious food and nice people, the only thing I don't like the most it's the fact that the government doesn't make more cultural investment in the city :( and I thought you had have been in Mexico City but reading the comments I see that you haven't, so you MUST go there! Lots of stuff to do and beautiful architecture, but be prepared for a waaaay more noisey place. Thanks for these vlogs, I really like to see another's perspective of my city!

Honestly, say ugly said it's more like an invitation not to stay and an exageration.
Let me explain you, about traffic, like many metropolitan areas of the world over of 1 million of people (more of 5 million in this case) have rush hour, but there are many public works in process in different points of the city, mainly for the renovation of anillo periferico norte and sur, in addition to other avenues with complete urban interventions, but also the construction of the third line of the metro system that include an beautification of urban image along the way, and I think in few time it will be inaugurated, you can travel from Zapopan to Tlaquepaque.
I'm sure you never seen a roundabout before that is why it scares you, but you can feel calm not bug deal, where it is actually danger drive and walk it's in Lima Peru according to waze (worst traffic jams of Latin America)
Sometimes you see low pollution because the city it is high and complicate the dispersion of pollutants.
Some products are expensive yes....but for be imported.
And cut trees has become a sin, and in recent years the green areas have increased as in other cities, close to reach ONU HABITAT Standars.
    Just clarifications of your concerns.

I am Mex/American born and raised in Oregon, who lived 18 years in Mexico, mostly Jalisco including much time in Chapala/Ajijic and Guadalajara areas. The situation with the trees as in any city with many trees is quite common. It is true that sometimes the construction is of lower quality (I remember a place where the sidewalk collapsed in Puerto Vallarta) but being raised in Oregon the problem is the trees not the sidewalk . I suppose you "big city slickers" do not realize that, but yes for a Mexican city Guadalajara has a lot of trees! I remember walking in Guadalajara and picking low-hanging oranges off a tree that hung over the sidewalk , not to mention the absolutely HUGE avocados that grow on the trees at the Hotel Haciendas Chapala they fall on the ground and go to waste (those that the cats do not eat) . There are many many trees there yes even in Guadalajara in comparison to cities in places like like California.

Guadalajara is a very Educated city…. The dialect there is just more formal, and when you combine the formal proper dialect with a faster pace, the outcome is just sometimes very hard to understand…. Especially if you’re not from the area…
I have 2 cousins in GDL that just finished with their Masters and my Uncle is a Professor at University of Guadalajara… also GDL is one of the more expensive cities to visit and live in…
GDL is compared to the Silicon Valley, Palo Alto, California. They even call Guadalajara “The Silicon Valley of Mexico”…. 😃

It’s possible! But we’ve also been to San Juan Cosalá and Chapala. It seems the same in both places. More understandable and easier conversations. Also, we’ve found after struggling to converse with someone in Guadalajara, we later learn they know English. And it’s not like we’re speaking so fluently that they know to speak freely. It’s just something about the speech pattern/words/who knows that is more difficult to understand in our experience.

jb hann- Castilian is not a dialect, it is one of four separate languages spoken in Spain (along with Catalan, Gailcian, and Euskarian). I'm saying that in Guadalajara, the language is less mixed with other dialects than many other places in Mexico. This may be nowadays only with the older people. I lived in GDL back in the 70s. I have also lived in Madrid and Palma de Mallorca where the resemblance to the way Tapatios speak is apparent (not the pronunciation, but structure and idiomatic expressions).
