  • We have to drive in Mexico back to the US border. Tolls, Temporary Vehicle Import Permit, scams & more
►Get Tangerine perks on Patreon: / tangerinetravels
It's our 2nd day of driving to the border. Today, we're dealing with scams in Mexico, turning in our TIP (Temporary Vehicle Import Permit) and visas, plus crossing the border from Mexico to the United States.
As Americans in Mexico or any expat for that matter, it's always prudent to keep an eye out for scams. If you come across a dishonest person who thinks you're an easy target, well, that person might try to scam you.
In this Mexico travel vlog, we're talking about tolls on Mexican roads, how someone tried to scam us, and some travel tips for traveling in Mexico.
    ABOUT US (MADDIE & JORDAN)
In January 2018, we sold everything we owned in the US (except our husky Laska & what fit in our tiny, tangerine Prius C3) to travel the world-starting with Mexico. Since then, we've been making travel videos about our life in Mexico and the new experiences we encounter while traveling the world. If you'd like to join our shenanigans, subscribe to our RUclips channel. You can also poke around our social media to find out what we’re up to each week.

Yes, she tried to steal from you, it looks that's what's she does in a systematic way, imagine 50 pesos from a thousand people, that's 50,000 pesos (almost 2,500 usd) everyday. Like you said in your past videos, almost everyone in the toll booth are honest, but there's a small percentage of people that isn't, anyway treat it as an unusual case, keep thrusting and driving safely!

We'd love to not have to use 500-peso bills but when that's the only bill an ATM gives us, I don't know what other options we have? The ATM is the only place we get cash here in MX.

Luis Villa This is what I keep hearing. I’m very interested in Hualtuco area. I like it because it isn’t “Cancún”. Thus, I’m wondering if it would be better to look in Rocky Point or Puerto Escondido but I want to be around Mexican people not a bunch of Americans/Canadians. I’m half American and half Canadian. I’ve spent the first half of my life in California and I want to spend the last half where my heart and soul belong...south of the border!

The large objects on the flatbed trucks looked like hub-bodies for wind turbines. Mexico must be diversifying their power production to include wind generated electricity.

    • @TangerineTravels
      @TangerineTravels  6 лет назад +4

The first wind turbines in Mexico were installed about 30 years ago, along with solar panels, as an experimental project in alternative energy. The first and only nuclear power plant in Mexico, Laguna Verde, became fully operational around that time too, after a delayed construction and controversy.

One thing to consider, though. Europeans are the same way. They think Americans, especially Southerners are way too happy and cheery. You don’t go to Germany and ask a random German “hi, how are you?” You will freak them out and may mistrust you for smiling so much. It’s not because they are rude, it’s just that customs are different in every region.

Funny how you are so happy to now understand the Spanish being spoken in the U.S. Target store. I had a White friend who had lived in Korea for awhile. Well, one day he was here in Los Angeles' Korea Town browsing the aisles of a golf shop. The two Korean men working there were insulting my friend in their language, never dreaming he could understand them. After awhile my friend walked up to the counter where the two men were, and started asking them questions in Korean about some of their products. Well, as you can imagine the Korean men were flabbergasted, embarrassed, and profusely apologized. Too funny!

Just goes to show you can never make judgements simply based on appearances. 😉 My mom (who speaks fluent Spanish but looks as white as me) has surprised workers in both her job, our home, and around town with her Spanish when no one suspects she would know.

When you guys arrived to arrange your TIP, what the guy says after asking "¿Cancelar?" is "¿Me permite la puerta, por favor?", which would roughly translate to "Would you let me (open) the door, please?". The "open" is implicit, he doesn't actually say it, so if you translate too strictly, it sounds like there's a part of the sentence missing (it actually is! :-D . Just thought I'd share, in case you wanted some clarification. Good luck in your travels! (and thanks for letting us live vicariously through you, hehehe)

Also, do you know how to say "Ejército" (Army)? "Banjército" is a portmanteau (or mixed) word made of "banco" + "ejército", so the way to pronounce it is by stressing the syllables as in "ejército". Cheers!

I run a business in Mexico and I want to let you know something important. Regardless the sign you see, Visa or Mastercard. Once you see either one. Both cards are accepted. Usually a sign with both logos, Visa and Mastercard is everywhere. But if you eventually see a sign showing just Visa or Mastercard. Do not assume the other one is not accepted. Do not ask the dependant, because most of the time they are not trained to answer if Visa or Mastercard is accepted. At least in medium and small size businesses. So be prepared with you credit card, debit card and cash, just in case, again, in medium or small size businesses. With respect American Express, usually big size businesses and chains accept the card. Not the case of medium size and small businesses. Going back the Visa and Mastercard issue. There is no known place in Mexico that discriminate Visa over Mastercard and viceversa. In the United States there is only one place I know they don't accept Mastercard but Visa. That place is COSTCO in the USA.

I notice that when you address a Mexican person, you don’t seem to give them their title, as would be best to do as foreigners. Next time, try to precede with Senor when speaking with a man and Senora/Senorita to women. This politeness may get you more positive results and smiles. It’s the Latin way (as anywhere in Europe).

As for deodorant I'd buy the Ban Roll on , none here, the Dr. Scholl's foot powder(cause the quality of the mexican version isn't as good as the american), Nabisco Shredded wheat cereal and Sara Lee Pound Cake, that is so good, none here match up to Sara Lee's! lol....thinking of sweet stuff as much as Jordan is, you'd think he'd have enough sweetness in his life having you my dear Maddie, ah and Root Beer, preferably Hires or A&W. ;)

We've lived in Cochise County , Arizona right on the Mexican border since 1973. I've never even considered crossing the border and driving in Mexico. Our neighbor was from Peru and attempted to drive his car on the Pan American highway to Peru and they held him up for it. Too, with all the drug cartel turf wars going on it's just too dangerous. You could easily find yourself held up, kidnapped , taken hostage, or worst. There is a fine line between being brave and being too much of a risk taker.

Hey Tangerines! I work at a bank and let me explain a little bit more the Visa/MC/Amex thing. Visa and MC use the same devices to accept cards, so when someone says "We accept Visa" they're referring to both payment methods, it's just that they shorten the MC speech. Amex however is different and requires a special terminal.
Not every shop accepts Amex due to the fact that Amex charges a higher fee per transaction because Amex says their customers spend more per transaction than Visa and MC. Also not many people have Amex cards, so shops whom take those cards, tend to be nicer or big commerces.

A great way of avoiding the situation with the tolls is using the iave or capufe tag you can either link it with an American express card or add prepay amounts to it.
Another convenience is there are dedicated lanes for them shortening the time at tolls and waiting times.

Both Mexico and the U.S. are police states where freedoms are overrun by corrupt government. Both employ Gestapo-esque police tactics.

+dsanzo that's the case in most countries- that's because positions of power are likely to attract sociopaths looking to exercise their desire for dominance. Of course it's less/more severe in some countries, but the U.S. definitely has the worst problem.

Is it harsh? What if she successfully scams people for 55 pesos 100 times every day? That's 5,500 pesos stolen every day or 1,650,000 every year assuming she works 300 days a year (almost $90,000 USD). Thankfully people like this are the vast minority and most people here are honest and willing to work for their money.

Yes, you were scammed at the toll booth. Has happened to us, we also always count the change. Also happened at gas stations, paying with a 500 p note and attendant says it's not enough and whips out a 50 p note, claiming that's what we gave him. Or using credit card, adding an extra 100 p (hoping you are not paying attention.) We have lived in Mexico full time for 10 years - we pay attention! Returning your tourist visa is not necessary, BTW. I get the "sugar rush", I go for the Good & Plenty and better 1/2 goes for the Twizzlers, hehe. Good reporting! And learned something new today, dentists in that area are way more INexpensive than where we live!

The north only think to make money and they dont have time to be polite, it could be an answer,.........but of course it is a stereotype too.......It´s strange......... here in Nuevo Leon we are polite, i dont know in Coahuila, you see, each state of Mexico is too different, well love and peace, and from my mexican brothers, dond kill me, i talked only about stupid seterotypes, regars!!!

You experiences going to the border were pretty much what we have experienced, returning your TIP etc. has become a much simpler process in recent years. The TIP being automatically returned to the same credit card that you used when you purchased it means that you need to make sure that your card is still going to be valid when you TIP period is up. Using a credit card to purchase the TIP also ensures that you have the weight of your card company behind you if there is any dispute. When we use a credit card for any purchases in Mexico (love those hotel points) usually gas, not local merchants, we first ask "acceptan tarjeta Visa" (or MasterCard as the case may be). Did you see any trucks stopped in the center lane, lined up, around that area where everyone has a cafe? They actually carry out truck maintenance/repairs in the center lane of the main road. Have you also noticed how many muffler workshops there are immediately after topes? ;). Safe travels back!

OMG, you were in my city! Saltillo is such a random place to visit, there's no much to do in the city, also you were in the city center, right now is like the touristy but poor part of town, all the fancy stuff is up north, new neighborhoods, shopping malls, restaurants, etc...That's kind of the problem with Saltillo if you don't have a car, is kinda hard to go around. The touristy/old part of town is in the centre, but in the north is where everything is going on, but if you ever come close again, there's plenty to do in a 2hours drive ratio. I work literally one block away from the Cathedral, close to Saltillo and Monterrey there are a lot of outdoors activities to do, with amazing places, if you ever want to do a northern tour, and need suggestions im happy to help ! If you need anything just ask!! :D
Google: Matacanes, cuatrocienegas, parras de la fuente, Chipinque, Potrero chico, Monterreal, Arteaga, dunas de yeso. All of those places are at driving distance (1 to 3 hours)

@@TangerineTravels My problem with the tourist areas are the money. I am from Canada. We were in a resort where everything was included from Canada. I went one time to Playa del Carman . 5th avenue did not appeal to me. The thing is there they recognize your wrist band and try scamming. One guy wanted a tip but we caught on right away, he recognized the wrist band and asked if we remembered him from the resort. Wanted a tip for no reason. My advice cover those up if going off the resort. Before I left home I bought pesos. That cost. My problem was some shops did not want me to pay in pesos but with my credit card. Problem: Everything is priced in American dollars. My Canadian dollar was already 25 cents less than US dollar. I would still try to pay everything in pesos if possible. For the most part I found the people quite nice. I was told 20 pesos was a decent tip. Thank you very much for your videos and education. My number one advice is try to learn as much Spanish as possible. I think the average person likes that. If you pronounce the word wrong, they will correct you.

I found the banjercito and tip process at the beginning of my entry and upon taking my car back to the US, to be very easy. But! Do your homework and have all your paperwork (look online, the list of what you need is available). And! Make photocopies of all your documents for your vehicle and yourself. A little prep ahead of time makes this process painless.

One year returning to the USA I didn't stop to turn in my vehicle forms, so didn't get the refund; I was to return; however, to turn in that form, BUT my wife put the form in a "safe" place taking it out of my papers for the trip. The result was the "safe" place was so safe we never found the form and my wife doesn't remember where she put it. Next time we took that vehicle into Mexico they straightened out the issues, so they do not enforce never returning; however, guard that paperwork well or you lose the entire deposit. I am more careful now. The station to return the form is open 24/7, but I came back late at night and didn't know it was open or even where it was - now I know. Expensive lesson!
