  • As we know, water and electronic(electric) circuits don't go together! This is true for Volkswagen Passat, too! The damages caused by the water ingress into the ECU located under the windscreen can be very expensive! Some simple habits can save you money on expensive repairs.

OMG, this is exactly the same issue with my VW Touran. i.e., when it's raining heavily, then my car does not start but after a few hours of dry weather/sunshine, it starts without any issue. Now I know that there is some water leak into the circuit board. Many thanks, I will go to my nearest car electrician to fix this as there is a lot of hassle and time investment to fix this. Thank you for sharing such a useful video. God Bless you.

Where is the ECU located in a 2008?

I just bought a passat b7 that has had an ECU replaced some time in the past.
I just unclogged the drain, but i also noticed water dripping from the plastic cover where it splits, straight onto the ECU..
I did the only thing i could in a short time, i cut out a large piece of plastic from a 4l washer fluid container and used adhesive "silicone" to fasten it on top of the ECU connector to make the water fall to the outsides of it all.
Should i worry about the water that has dripped on the wires going to the connector or should the connector be watertight between the wire insulation and the metal pins?
Should i just drive it and stop worrying?
    I'm quite nervous now.

I’m having exactly the same issue on the Passat B7 replaced the starter motor checked relays 1 and 6 underneath the main fuse box to the right side of the engine bay all looking ok think I need to start digging the ecu out now.

Forgot to say it’s two starter relays due to it being a stop start model.

Any idea on coding new ecu in? Easy ?

Dont just unclog that rubber drain. Remove it so there is a big hole, less chance of it getting clogged.

Had same issue with passat B7 , ecu get wet , so i sealed the plastic between window with the silicon all the way , if ecu is dry now the issue can happen again ?

This has happened to my 2014 Passat, engine light on and glow plug light flashing but engine runs fine. How much does it cost to get a new ECU fitted?

New one costs 6k€? Or how much?

Hi thanks for your video, but how can you remove the metal bracket? I found there are two one-time fasterning bolt on them. can't remove the connectors from the ECU unit. Thanks

Answering my own question, use a rotary tool to cut a slot and use a flat head to unfastern it. Ecu metal cover is glued with black strong stuff use a bit force to open it. Indeed, I found a corrosion bit just under the vapour cap.

The ECU is located in a very similar position on Corsa D models. The ECU's for these cars also have the breather bungs you pointed out on this Bosch one. Do you have any advice for further waterproofing this component? I appreciate a breather point is needed to prevent condensation build up in the ECU itself, but could the ECU not be encased in its mount in a loose fitting plastic membrane? This would divert any water which could potentially fall straight onto the unit away to the scuttle panel drains. Is there anything you would be cautious about in doing something like this? I would ensure there was still a free flowing space under the ecu mount to prevent any pooling of water.
The reason I'm asking is because I recently replaced an ECU, and had all scuttle panel drains cleared - only for my replacement ECU to become more flooded than the last one.. and I can't work out why! Owain

How about simply having big enough drain holes to avoid getting ecu flooded?
