    [BANG!]
    "Consider that a divorce!"
    I think the entire movie happened. There's a couple of scenes that occur where Quaid is nowhere in sight, how does he know they took place?
    Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Alexia Robinson.
    Casting Notes Fact: The name written on the passport of the "two weeks" lady arriving on Mars is Priscilla Allen, the real name of the actress.
    Practical Over CGI Fact: This was one of the last major Hollywood blockbusters to make large-scale use of miniature effects as opposed to CGI. It was also one of the first major Hollywood blockbusters to use CGI (mainly for the scenes involving the X-ray scanner) and have it look good.
    Hot Stone Fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger was so impressed by how much dedication Sharon Stone had in training for her character role, even if they reportedly didn't get along. Stone was later inducted into the Stunt Woman Association as an honorary member. So proud of her physique, Sharon Stone posed nude for 'Playboy' magazine, showing off the buff body she developed in preparation for the movie. Sharon had pumped iron and learned Tae Kwon Do.
    Nice Quaid Fact: Arnold Schwarzenegger noticed that Michael Ironside was constantly on the phone between takes. When he broached the subject with Ironside, he was told that he was phoning his sister and that she was currently suffering from cancer. Arnold immediately brought Michael to his trailer and they had an hour-long, three-way conversation with Ironside's sister about what exercises she should do and what kinds of foods she should be eating. Ironside has never forgotten Schwarzenegger's kindness and neither has his sister.

    I remember seeing with my Dad when this came out in 1990. I don't think any film Arnold has done has been as crazy as this film. This has it all mystery action romance and just an intense all around crazy plot. One of the greatest Sci Fi action films of all time. And one of the I'd place top 5 greatest Schwarzenegger films of his career.

  • @lazyperfectionist1
    @lazyperfectionist1 2 месяца назад +3

    13:27 This is something that impresses me about this movie. They accounted for basic physics.
    In the James Bond movie _Goldfinger,_ our hero gets threatened aboard a plane by a woman with a gun and he explains that, while she clearly knows a great deal about planes (as the pilot), she does not know so much about guns. The gun she is threatening him with is a Smith & Wesson. If she shoots him with it, the bullet will pass directly through him and shatter the fuselage. The resulting decompression will send all the passengers in the cabin hurtling out of the plane.
    The guns carried by US Federal Air Marshals are different, because every single one of them is designed powerful enough to kill whatever you shoot, but _not_ powerful enough to punch through the fuselage.
    But this is the kind of thing that caused me concern when I heard, in this movie, that there was a group of people on Mars fighting for independence. I immediately wanted to know, "Fighting with _what?"_ because if they were fighting with anything explosive, the results could be _much_ more catastrophic than they would be here on Earth.

    I remember reading the original Philip Dick's short story, "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale", and also the novelization of the movie (Dick passed away in 1982, 8 years before this film). The movie script differed greatly from the original story. I think the latter delved into greater detail about the Aliens, and Quade's (originally "Quail's") personal connection to the Aliens whom they had deemed a sort of a "chosen one". I'm also among those who didn't like the 2012 remake.

  • @imcrazedandconfused
    @imcrazedandconfused 2 месяца назад +7

    Yeah, one of the really good ones. PK Dick is also always a good recommendation to read.
    The rhythm of the title music is the same as the one from "Conan - The Barbarian", it became a signature rhythm for Schwarzenegger movie themes after Conan was such an unexpected success.
    Really liked your reaction. It was about time, I really always thought you might like this one.
    It for sure is one of the best Schwarzenegger movies.
    Thanks again for an entertaining video.
    All the best and a great Sunday!

    Is what is happening to Quaid just a fantasy taking place in his head while he is strapped in a chair at Rekall? I was long resistant to the idea myself. But over the years, I've become persuaded that this is almost certainly the case. Even so, the film is sufficiently ambiguous that people can argue back-and-forth about it and never resolve the question absolutely.

    • @erickknutz5599
      @erickknutz5599 2 месяца назад +4

      At the very least, there is no confirmation either way, all the way up to even the last scene. After being mind-effed thru that entire film, how could anyone not be second-guessing at that ending, as they are talking about 'maybe this is all a dream'.

    • @x_trio_3_po333
      @x_trio_3_po333 2 месяца назад +1

      Yes it is a very clever ambiguous ending. Yet I'm inclined to take the view that it was all real simply because there were many scenes where Quaid could not have known had occurred. The main one being Ricter's private discussions with Cohaagen on Mars. The kiss between Ricter and Lori, and his later discovery of her death. The audio conversations between Richter on Earth, and Cohaagen on Mars. The shooting deaths of the customers of Venus-ville, and their subsequent near suffocation. The same customers reaction to the air cloud smashing in their windows. The brutal martian death of Cohaagen, etc. Quaid never saw any of these things. But its a fun little mystery to ponder.

    About the eye bulging scene. In the 1994 TV series, E.R. medical drama, there is a scene where one of the patients eye suddenly pops out of its socket. One of the doctors calmly reacts by getting a paper clip and somehow using that to get the loose eye ball back into its socket. Not long after, the patient and his eyes are completely fine. But I found that scene to be one of the most shocking and disturbing I've ever seen on TV (and I've seen GoT). It wasn't at all bloody, just very disturbing and hard to look at.

    Total Recall was actually supposed to comeout in 1987 starring Patrick Swayze. Arnold Swarzenegger wanted to be in that movie but the director thought he was a terrible actor. 1987 production went bankrupt. The year previous that same director and Swarzenegger had a contract but both of them wanted out and the director needed to make some money to make Total Recall. So a deal was made Swarzenegger makes a movie intended just to raise funds to make another and he would be out of the contract. That movie is 1986's RAW DEAL one of Arnold Swarzeneggers most underrated and one of his best movies. So when the 1987 Total Recall production went bankrupt Swarzenegger bought the movie and then starred in it. The director faded into obscurity.

      The Running Man (1987) was written by Stephen King (writing under the pseudonym name Richard Bachman), dance choreography was done by (pop singer & dancer) Paula Abdul, music was by Harold Faltermeyer (who also did Beverly Hills Cop & Fletch) and the movie was directed by Paul Michael Glaser (David Starsky from the 70s TV series Starsky And Hutch). It also features Richard Dawson (former host of Family Feud), Mick Fleetwood (from Fleetwood Mac), Yaphet Kotto (from Alien and Live & Let Die), Jesse Ventura (from Predator & former governor of Minnesota), María Conchita Alonso (from Predator 2), Jim Brown (from The Dirty Dozen, Mars Attacks & former football player), Professor Toru Tanaka (from The Last Action Hero, Missing In Action 2: The Beginning & former martial artist and wrestler) Erland Van Lidth (from Stir Crazy & former opera singer) and Dweezil Zappa (from Pretty In Pink, Jack Frost, son of Frank Zappa & former musician himself). 😎

    The 2012 remake is also a pretty good thriller, and less like a comic book. There are a lot of similar plot elements and characters, of course, but it's not set on Mars. Colin Farrell stars, along with Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, and a bunch of other recognizable actors. They do not disappoint.
    Another movie you might consider watching is Outland (1981), with Sean Connery, Frances Sternhagen, and Peter Boyle. It's a remake of the old western "High Noon" as a space thriller on a mining colony.

      The story this is based on is more straightforward as Quaid is an out of shape office worker who is not capable of doing the things he does, but he rejects reality for the more fulfilling fantasy.
      Also that instant terraforming is not possible. 78% of our breathable atmosphere is inert nitrogen. Pure oxygen will burn the eyes and mucus membranes. On top of that the soil of Mars is highly reactive with water, breaking it down into free oxygen and hydrogen - which is dangerously explosive.

    Saturn while pretty has a lot of stray objects to run into. My dream space resort would be located on the rim of the lunar disk. The endless Earth rise/set would be amazing on one side and the other would be 14 days of night stars without glare or air to obstruct then 14 days of lunarscape, requiring shades. Plus if in a presurized hotel the reduced gravity could really be fun. Think it would be one of the best places for honeymoons on the moon.

    Arguably the best action/sci-fi movie every made. Real or Dream? Another great movie debate right up there with John Carpenter's "The Thing".
    The story was written and this movie was made before any real VR, and like so much sci-fi deals with big questions of a future. Will people let a Rekall f*** with your brain? Of course some will - look at all the demand for an industry that provides entertainment and vices like porn, alcohol and drugs, smoking, video/computer games, phone apps/games, VR/AR, "Fantasy Island", etc. "Your brain won't know the difference". Why be yourself in reality when you could be anything in a dream? What do you think the population ratio be for Virtual vs Reality when truly non-reality is indistinquishable from the real and you are virtually immortal in the metaverse? Will eventually every human mind be only in VR, and only artificial beings(i.e. AI robots) are left in reality?
    Another Arnold movie: "True Lies"(1994)
    Other similar Sci-Fi movies: "Dreamscape"(1984) or "Brainstorm"(1983)
    Action/Thriller: "Firefox"(1982) with Clint Eastwood as a spy in the USSR with some Top Gun-like action.
    Sci-Fi future society(year 2274) movie based on a novel: "Logan's Run"(1976).

    Like others have said, Phillip K Dick books are even better than the movies. Lots gf great sci-fi movies are based on Dick's books. I read most of them when I was younger.

    I thought the remake was pretty good. This Schwarzenegger one is the one I grew up with and dear to me for personal reasons. But the remake does a great job at making a more believable urban society on Mars, I thought. The acting is awesome and it would not be a waste of time should you ever chose to check it out. At least, that's my opinion.

    Ok, so two thoughts from fans on the fact that its all fake. First, the white flash at the end is interpreted as Quad being lobotomized.
    Second, and more telling, is that the scenario load up by the tech in Recall is "Blue Skies Over Mars."
