I've been absorbing this lesson for a few weeks now. Getting the phrases under my fingers. Been playing 50 years and know a lot of blues, Rock n Roll rockabilly etc, I listen to a lot of B Bop era Jazz and have a natural swing feel -- but have known for a long time there's a lot I don't know. This lesson feels like a game changer to me. The Grimes influenced lines knock me out and the structures are new to me -- thanks so much. This is a gem and I really appreciate your generous hard work
Thanks Tommy. These guys were just monsters and to have you break it down like this is great. And thanks for not dumbing it down, as in "put your finger here on this string." I'm sticking with this one until I get in the pocket, and then let it inform everything else I play.

Whoah, this is great stuff, some clear Charlie Christian lines in there too! Thanks for sharing your work, this style and Django's style for me are where the guitar had a unique voice that was expressive and exciting to listen to. Will have to check more of your videos and some of the lessons on your website as time permits.

Prior to this, I had heard of Tiny Grimes, and even heard a side or two that let me know he was the real deal; but your website and videos led me into his style far more deeply -- to the point where I can say his playing is a significant influence on my own. Much gratitude, Tommy!
Thank you man! I remember the first time I heard Tiny Grimes, I instantly thought that's what I want to sound like.
@@TommyHarkenriderguitar Well, it took me a little longer to come around (I'm not always as smart as I need to be), but that's what I think, too. Everything he did stands alone on its own merit, and goes right with everything I like to play: jazz, blues, rockabilly, etc.
I'm currently on Lesson 33 in Mickey Baker's book (the one where he gives you three blues solos, and you have to use them to create three more solos for each one of his), and of all the stuff I came up with, my favorites are the ones that sound sorta like Charlie Christian and Tiny Grimes.
@@175epi It's funny you bring Mickey Baker up I've been teaching a monthly video course on that book explaining how I use it. Oct. subscription is lesson 31. I also like the Herb Ellis books

I was planning to contact you to ask you more about it, but it looks like you already answered the questions I had. It wouldn't hurt me to revisit Lesson 31, since I'm already including a review of previous lessons in my daily practice. See you in October!
I have Herb's "Swing Blues" book, but haven't done much with it yet. It's at the top of the to-do list for after I finish the Baker book.

Love your videos. With such heavy strings how do you play so smooth? I'm assuming your action is on the high side since you play clean. Am I right ?
It's not insanely high. A couple things that help is I really don't bend that much. A lot of the tension is based on the guitar setup. My break angle isn't that sharp on my guitars. My archtops with the floating bridge are pretty shallow. Thanks for checking my stuff out man. You sir are a great picker. Hope to see you play soon.
@@TommyHarkenriderguitar ok I see. I'm thinking of putting heavy strings on my guitar. Just not sure on how to set it up. Do you give the guitar more relief ? I know that makes the strings feel a little looser.
@@kymichael8248 Not really man the heavier strings will a little relief. What guitar do you plan on putting heavier strings on?
@@TommyHarkenriderguitar I have a guild m75 aristocrat reissue hollowbody no f holes. It has 11s on it with lots of relief and high action but it doesn't play very well. Everyone always tell me lots of relief and high action is the way to go but idk if it's that true.
