Cymbalta (Duloxetine) for Anxiety & Depression: My Experience

  • In this mental health commentary video, I talk about my experience being prescribed Cymbalta (Duloxetine) for my anxiety and depression while also sharing some digital art. I suffered from anxiety and depression from a young age. Then, I suffered even further during my dermatomyositis diagnosis, and into grad school. I also discuss how being prescribed antidepressants improved my overall quality of life. :) As far as the art, these are emotes that I designed for my partner Poly, whose twitch channel is twitch.tv/Polyfaux. I used procreate on my new iPad Pro to digitally paint these cuties.

    Hi! My name's Jamie, and I'm an artist, twitch streamer, PhD student, and English teacher passionate about creating things. I primarily use my iPad to create digital paintings right now because I live in a small apartment in Greensboro, North Carolina. While some artists are able to keep carpets and desks free of paint stains, I can't. I make ALL KINDS OF MESSES. So digital painting is my go-to at the moment
    I also was diagnosed dermatomyositis at the age of 16, and I currently struggle with the effects of that and chronic skin picking (also known as excoriation disorder and/or dermatillomania). My content is about sharing how art intersects with my personal and profesional life.
    Through this channel, I hope to share my art with others and inspire hesitant artists to have fun while making art.

    I really like your videos but this one touched me in such a deep way. i feel understood because your story is so similiar to mine. i feel that i have a future and things can get better. i was inpatient months ago and that took a toll on my mental health. i felt like i was never going to get better but this video helped a lot. thanks for sharing your story jamie.

      I'm so glad you found this helpful, Iara.💕 It's wild how much your brain chemistry can affect the way you feel and behave. Within the last month, I realized that the reason I couldn't wake up before 1pm without serious effort was due to taking my antidepressants in the morning. Now that I take them at night, I can wake up on my own around 9am without much effort, and I can stay awake all day. I thought I was just LAZY 🤣 So your brains and the way we treat mental illness requires fine tuning and experimentation with the help of a practitioner. And even with MY resources, we didn't know that my sleep was so hugely affected by my pill schedule. Before I started antidepressants, I resigned myself to living a panicked sort of life and couldn't see a different way of thinking/living/feeling. So I definitely feel where you're coming from. I'm sorry that inpatient took a toll on you and your mental wellbeing. It's wild that mental health resources can actually do more harm than good--depending on the institution and circumstances. I'm not sure what other mental health resources are available in your country, but I wish you all the luck in your efforts. If you ever want to chat more outside of the comments regarding mental health and life stuff, feel free to DM me on twitter, or let me know where you tend to message. :)

    Cymbalta has changed my life. After a year of severe anxiety, panic attacks, etc. The past 10 days I haven't had one attack, and I have felt completely normal. First time in a year.

      @@hoyconjessi5141 once I got to 60mg after about a week I was fine. It's been over 2 months now. So far not a single heart palpitation, no dizzy out of body feelings, all those things associated with anxiety. I was having upwards of 6-7 attacks per day. I couldn't go into stores, barely leave my place, it was horrible. An entire year!!! Over a year actually. Yet today I can honestly say I'm myself. What sucks is they offered cymbalta when all of it first started and I refused. Thinking that eventually it will pass, and I hate taking pills. I lost all of 2022 because of anxiety. I'm now ready and able to enjoy 2023 🙂. So 60mg , I take it at night before bed, and so far I'm still doing great.

    I just recently got really bad anxiety since covid started…and just been feeling sooo alone, like if my reality was altered…I just don’t feel the same as I did before covid, I’m weirder now, I stutter, I have trouble socializing now…it’s horrible…honestly I just started taking duloxetine, so I hope this will help me…especially since I just had surgery on my lower spine…hearing your story really makes me feel like I’m not alone, and that there’s still hope…drowning in thoughts and feelings ain’t fun and there’s soooo little few people who actually acknowledge depression that it just feels like no one would understand

    I take Cymbalta 60 mg. I started at 20mg daily last year in August when i was finishing up my therapy on my back from an injury that effected both sides my sciatic nerve. Made life more bearable. Ended up with back surgery this February and got it increased to 60 mg, daily. The benefits i felt was more with nerve pain with much relief. Able to walk 3 miles every other day with no nerve pain. As far as depression i can't give a answer if helping in that area i fill like i have a flat effect with emotions. I took paxil after i had to retire early from a injury for over a year and i felt mentally more happy but im afraid to stop Cymbalta for how it helps me with nerve pain. I cant imagine what you go through maybe medication break and start off with most minimal amount and increase gradual for your body might not need those meds due to your body chemistry, were all individual and for sure all meds don't always work individually just because its in the small print.

    • @JamieHerself
      @JamieHerself  2 года назад

      I know that a colleague of mine struggled with nightmares while on it, but that's the only person I've known with a negative side effect. I'm still on it and enjoying my ability to process my emotions. I started cymbalta prior to the pandemic, and I did have a withdrawal once due to an issue with my prescriber. The withdrawal process was not fun--cold sweats, fogginess, that sort of thing. BUT, this wasn't a weaning from my doctor; this was cold turkey. Would not recommend. If you do take cymbalta, take it regularly, and be patient for the first month or so as your body adjusts. I recommend it, but everybody's experience is different.
