To be honest, all three are very good and likely would have won had they been nominated in separate years against other movies. I personally like Pulp Fiction the best, but I can see how one can argue that the other two are better.
I really don't think it is overrated. At least not enough to call it winning over the other two a huge upset. All three have this nostalgic balance that makes them all so good. If you actually watch it from beginning to end, you feel is genuine sorrow, but also completeness after vicariously living through the man's life. Just because there isn't really any "pure action" in it should not mean that it is lesser than the other two.

Peter Frank But it is still a stellar film worthy of everything it got. Any other year and it would have been fine. It’s just not fair that Saving Private Ryan and Thin Red Line also came out then because those are legitimately far superior
I liked Shakespeare In Love, but to me, Saving Private Ryan was the better movie. But, I prefer movies like SPR over "love stories" I raised 4 boys...no wonder. And, no one would have wanted to be in my house when the best movie was announced. They threw a fit. And, so did I. lol

When i saw Shakespeare in Love on cable i fully expected to hate it cause it 'stole' the Oscar from SPR. I was shocked to see a film that was consistently good grom the first scrne to the last. Paltrow (who I detest) gave a beautiful, excellent performance. Even Ben Affleck doesnt slouch here. Jodeph Fiennes, Judy Dench, on and on. It was witty, heartbreaking. I WAS SHOCKED. Overall, its a better film than Private Ryan. It HURTS me to say it, but its true. I know Omaha beach as an extended sequence is the best scene in movie history, but........A monumental 30 minutes is not better than 2 hours of quiet excellence.
What a Joke? Slumdog was a Masterpiece and not some high priced Studio Film. Every Scene in the entire film was incredible. It is far better in story, direction, emotion, everything. Just not full of high priced actors.
Kevin Reily So you’re saying that The Dark Knight can’t be a better movie just because it had a higher budget and higher paid actors? Movies shouldn’t be judged on whether they’re popular or not. Looking back you can clearly tell which film had the greater impact on cinema
As much as I love Goodfellas, I can't hate on Dances With Wolves. Dances helped to rejuvenate a genre that was so close to death that they were about to take it off of life support and let it die!
Goodfellas--hated that film for the violence and how horrifying it was. I recognize it was probably true but it was sickening to watch that, not an enjoyable film in my estimate.
I loved Dances With Wolves. The acting, the native actors, the scenic beauty, that sweet little wolf( didnt care for that treatment, although admittedly plausible). The cavalry always gets a bad rap, but I know they did do some criminal deeds to Indians. Id go to Canada too. It was beautifully directed and well acted. Some of this comes down to your taste in films and opinion. ID vote for DWW !
Miljan Kostadinovic Forest Gump is a fantastic movie. That being said, how many times do you hear people mention Forest Gump on the top 10 movies of all time. Not much. The Shawshank Redemption on the other hand...
Agreed, pulp fiction and shawshank redemption are superior movies, but you can't say that the quality difference between them is as big as these movies from the list Forrest Gump is fucking close to both movies, so it's okay for it to win the award
Don't if that statement is 100% correct because of BORK, but I gave it a thumbs up. 12 Angry Men is "The Most Underrated Greatest Movie of All-Time"-if that makes sense.
1957 movies : The Bridge on the river kwai - Paths of Glory - 12 Angry Men - Witness for the prosecution - Wild Strawberries - The Seventh Seal and .... How they chose the best between all these great movies ?
Try to remember the non joker stuff... It's not a whole movie. Bales Batman voice is annoying as hell, the TwoFace arc is extremely underdeveloped, and the villain plot is a little ridiculous.
The King Speech was a fantastic and deserving film. I always assumed it was boring and predictable but then I saw it and it became one of the few period films I like.
"Psycho" and "The Apartment" are both awesome masterpieces I love, It's true that "Psycho" is extremely iconic, but "The Apartment" really deserverd the award.
Faven Mulugeta Harvey Weinstein is not a producer he is more like a mob boss who should have that Oscar taken away from him. Shakeflop not in Love did not deserve best Picture it did not even deserve a nomination and don’t get me started on Gwenyth Paltrow beating out Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth. This is beyond a f***ing joke.
No It didnt win because it was Just a rehash of every single film made about the war years. Derivative, but with famous actors. It really wasnt that good
Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction we're both more deserving than Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump was undoubtedly great, but Shawshank and Pulp Fiction rank among the best movies of all time. I can't believe they're not mentioned anywhere on this list.
Top 10 Movies that were nominated for tons of Oscars but haven't won at any category: * Gangs of New York (10 nominations, 0 wins) ; * The Insider (7 nominations, 0 wins) ; * The Thin Red Line (7 nominations, 0 wins) ; * The Martian (7 nominations, 0 wins) ; * American Hustle (10 nominations, 0 wins) ; * True Grit (10 nominations, 0 wins) ; * The Shawshank Redemption (7 nominations, 0 wins) ; * The Color Purple (11 nominations, 0 wins);
Although Psycho is a true classic and was really revolutionary, how can The Apartment be on this list?! truly one of the greatest movies ever, pure cinema, great directing, acting and screenplay. Just as perfect as a movie can get.
Apocalypse now is beautiful. I read “the heart of darkness” in my literature class, and my dad told me I was old enough to watch the modern adaptation(apocalypse now) with him. Been waiting to watch that movie since I was 10, about time😂
As much as I love Apocalypse Now, it is not Best Picture quality. It's bascialy two pictures jammed together: the lively, often witty, and exciting trip up the river, and the part that's more like wading through a tub of peanut butter at Kurz's camp. Don't get me wrong. I love the movie, but it seems like two different writers and directors took their work and mashed them up.
I believe that the Academy award didn’t want another vietnam war movie to win back to back Best picture. The year before, The Deer Hunter won Best Picture

Any list that doesn't include "Singing in the Rain," has some serious issues. Considered by most to be easily the best movie musical of all time. It wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, let alone win it. This oversight is a crying shame.
That still pisses me off. Gene Kelly well and truly one of the greatest dancers in musical films period. And Singin' in the Rain is easily the greatest musical EVER made it makes no sense that it was never nominated. I feel ya man.
Probably why its not on this list is cuz it wasn’t nominated. But yeah, singing in the rain redefined musicals. I don’t even have a clue what was best picture that year but I pretty much guarantee it hasn’t aged as well as singing in the rain
@@jchandlersabeast I believe it was "The Greatest Show On Earth" (1953 Oscar). Mojo picked "High Noon", but didn't even mention "SITR". They did acknowledge that "TGSOE" did not stand the test of time, however...So, "HN" vs "SITR". Hmmm...Apples & oranges??
Person Time The Dark Knight owes a lot of its popularity to comic book movies being in the mainstream at the moment. Slumdog Millionaire was to Bollywood as the Dark Knight was to superhero films, so that doesn’t hold water ;) Also, Slumdog Millionaire was a significantly-innovative technical marvel and was well written to boot. The Dark Knight doing everything within a comic scope surely amplified its importance, so if it were a regular cop movie-replace the joker with an escapee and Batman with a suited heistman-it would lose most of its relevance. But alas it is a comic book movie and for that reason I’ll admit it is one of the most influential films ever, but that doesn’t mean it was better at the time, is more important to WORLD cinema, or even is today better Slumdog Millionaire, which is a film I would watch over The Dark Knight anyday.
Wheeler Knight I can see what you’re saying but I’ve watched TDK numerous times over the past and it still hasn’t gotten old. For starters, Heath Ledger’s performance as Joker is probably the best performance from the past 20 years and one of the most iconic portrayals of any character in any medium, like to this day people still talk about how legendary his performance was. Also, The Dark Knight isn’t really a superhero movie so much as it is a crime/drama film. It tackles many complex themes and has a lot of different things going on like Harvey Dent’s downfall, the mafia controlling Gotham, Batman struggling with his personal identity, the people in the boat that have to decide if they want to blow up the other boat in the river, and Joker trying to break both Gotham and Batman. I’m not gonna rant but while Slumdog is a great film, there’s just not many films that can hold a candle to TDK. Look up best movies of the 2000’s and I’m almost every list, TDK is in the top 5.
Carmen Radk Crash is okay, but certainly not Best Picture worthy, even Paul Haggis himself said so, Brokeback Mountain’s still a way better movie in my opinion.
There were several excellent movies that year, much like the Forrest Gump year. I agreed with Crash getting the nod but would’ve been satisfied either way.
Dark Knight might be one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time but superhero movies never win so not very surprised. Black Panther was the first superhero movie even nominated for best picture. I do think Slumdog was a great movie though so I am not upset about it. At least Heath Ledger won because that was the by far the best acting in any superhero movie of all-time and one of my favorite performances ever
not mad. all due respect & love to an amazing individual who was gone to soon and individual perf. well deserved however slumdog millionaire was a great film as well.
The Weinstein/Miramax award-season influence was at its heaviest in the late 90s- early 00s. The fact that Shakespeare in Love and Chicago are both best picture winners, and that The Cider House Rules and Chocolat ever got Best Picture nominations is proof of the influence he had on things.
@Mr Glass yeah! It did have Leo and that guy from third Rock from the sun it had some sweet effects. It was a good movie but I was surprised when it got nominated for Best picture. Social network however, was way better than the King's speech. King's speech was kind of boring
Just because he's raped a child doesn't mean he's not a great director. He probably shouldn't win person of the year, sure, but an Academy award has nothing to do with what happens outside of directing.
IMO the kings speech was totally deserving. I love inception social network and toy story 3 (all 4 in my top 50 movies) but I think it stands above them besides inception
maybe it´s because there would be a big debate about wich other movie was better. In my case i wouldn´t know if choosing Dunkirk, Darkest Hour, Lady Bird or Phantom Thread, but these movies are for sure better than The shape of water
I loved The Shape of Water I wouldnt say all films made in 2017 could beat it. Del Toro is a very visually based story teller so I can see why not a lot of people may have liked it or understood it. Pan's Labrynth is also an amazing movie directed by del Toro but its in thr same vein.
The king’s speech was about a man over coming his debilitating speech impediment on a deadline with overwhelming pressure from all corners of society. It shows the friendship created between two men working towards a common goal. It shows some amazing character development too. I’d rather watch this than a movie about Facebook
Ten million percent agree. Singin’ in the Rain is the greatest musical of ALL TIME. There is no other musical that can top it. According to the American Film Institute Singin’ in the Rain was the top musical and it still is.
@@roxy5588 "An American in Paris" won Best Picture the year before, and I think at the time critics believed it to be of higher quality than the Gene Kelly musical that followed. The setting and the extended ballet sequence likely had much to do with that. Of course, "Singin' in the Rain" provided a satirical look at the transition between the Silent Era and the talkies that followed in the wake of the success of "The Jazz Singer," and perhaps Hollywood just wasn't amused. But it should have been obvious how brilliant the film was as a musical, and that excellence is what has endured 60 years later.
I'm surprised that Django Unchained/Les Miserables overshadowing Argo wasn't on the list. Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Eddie Redmayne, Russel Crowe, and Anne Hathaway were all phenomenal in their respective roles in their respective films. And the stories that both movies tell are magnificent.
Not really and I say that liking Goodfellas more. As great a Goodfellas is and I think it is, Dances With Wolves just has a lot more going for it. Got to remember, these awards are not simply about popularity.
No. "Dances With Wolves" deserved the Best Picture win. That's the problem with the Oscar season. Pretty much every nominee is deserving of the acclaim, but the film that excels in every aspect is the winner. That's, unquestionably, "Dances With Wolves".
This list is so confusing if you don't know the winners. It should say "overshadowed BY". Also eff the oscars. It never represents movies people liked or even watch.
Two excellent examples of this from the ''80s: 1983's Best Picture: "Terms Of Endearment" Should've won: "A Christmas Story". 1984's Best Picture: "Amadeus" Should've won: "The Terminator".
@Diego Pisfil I would just add it if I agree. I rarely agree with the Oscar choices. Saw "Out Of Africa" (not impressed); have heard of "Ran"... definitely need to see it. As it is, '85 was an amazing year for movies. I highly suspect "Ran" would be another favorite. I should try to arrange to binge-watch some Kurosawa films. Only one I've seen is "Seven Samurai", or whatever the Japanese title is. Great film. The story of how "Ran" missed out on an Oscar nomination, even for Best Foreign Film , Is pretty ridiculous-- all about rules, policies & timing. You can find a NY Times article about it for the details. I'd include a link, but I'm using my phone, which limits me to one window at a time. Just search for "How Kurosawa's 'Ran' missed out on an Oscar", if you don't already know the story. My 1985 favorites, inpo (in no particular order): "The Breakfast Club" "The Purple Rose Of Cairo" "Clue" "After Hours" "Runaway Train" "Better Off Dead" "Back To The Future"
I think it would be appropriate if Singin' in the Rain won in 1952. Plus, I don't think it is fair to put down the Apartment against Psycho. They are two very good, very different movies.
I think Forrest Gump is an absolute masterpiece of a film, but I think both Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption deserve to be on this list. That year was in my opinion the year that had the best Oscar contenders. I mean,I would totally give it to Shawshank but all 3 of the movies are so great that I conpletely understand why people prefer Forrest Gump or Pulp Fiction
Idk, forrest gump is a bit cheesy honestly, I liked the parts where Tom Hanks’ character was in war, but everything else was a bit one note for me. It was just forrest doing a lot of shit that inspired people around him, and I can’t get attached to movies that just serve to feel good or whatever. It didn’t really blow me away with the presentation or anything, it had good acting but apart from that, it was just fine.
The Oscars don’t like science-fiction film. As you can see “Alien”, “Aliens”, and “Inception” never got nominated; and as of now “Blade Runner: 2049” got snubbed which is arguably best film of 2017.
I know I'm late, but: 10- Zero Dark Thirty(overshadowed Argo) 0:36 9- High Noon(overshadowed The Greatest Show on Earth) 1:34 8- The Social Network(overshadowed The King's Speech) 2:24 7- Citizen Kane(overshadowed How Green is my Valley) 3:21 6- Goodfellas(overshadowed Dancing with the Wolves) 4:09 5-Saving Private Ryan(overshadowed Shakespeare in Love) 5:06 4- Apocalypse Now(overshadowed Kramer Vs Kramer) 6:01 3- Brokeback Mountain(overshadowed Crash) 6:53 2- Psycho(overshadowed The Apartment) 7:53 1- 2001: A Space Odyssey(overshadowed Oliver!) 9:23
The Social Network was more entertaining, The King's Speech was a ok movie but Jesse Eisenberg's acting is so realistic, this is just my opinion but I agree with Watchmojo on this one.
The Apartment was such a beautifully tragic yet fun movie. I love how well it integrated comedy into what could've been a very dark movie about how to cope with someone attempting suicide
@@carljohnson4382 No, of course not. It was visually very interesting for the time, but it has a silly plot, shallow characters, and even Harrison Ford said the horrible wooden dialog was not so much "written" as "typed". Carrie Fisher's entire performance is one-note sarcasm -- and her character is supposedly a diplomat. And nobody even knew what the titular "wars" were about. Still don't, really. But it sold a lot of popcorn.
It will always be a mystery to me how "Gandhi" won over "ET:The Extraterrestrial" or "Tootsie" at the 1983 Oscars. Granted, it's got its merits, but isn't as celebrated in movie history as the other two. Even Richard Attenborough thought as much!
Sci-Fi and comedy used to be badly underrated by the Academy, and sweeping epics overrated. FWIW, I think both of your alternates are better than Gandhi (especially ET), but it was pretty predictable.
@@abebuckingham8198 Saving Private Ryan may have not been one of the best pictures of the 90's if not the best in 98, but it for the portrayal and realism of what hell drama and gore that men went through of WW2, it was the best ever made, especially the opening scene of the battle on D Day, even though it didn't have a great triumphant story of war but about sorry and the anguish and the lives that was lost to worn out scrutiny and for freedom of today
Especially made me at the end more teary eyed than Titanic, which to me was more to much of a sobby, romancey kind of shit, not saying it was a bad movie, but im guess women found it sadder. Titanic made women weep: Saving Private Ryan made men and WW2 vets/mothers cry.
It's one thing to look retroactively at these films and see which ones really stood the test of time. It's another to try and see them in the mindset that was contemporary at the time. Films like Brokeback Mountain and Saving Private Ryan were immediately thought to have been robbed of the prize. Meanwhile, films like Psycho and 2001, while now rightfully seen as masterpieces now, had no serious chance of winning at the time (or so I imagine).
There are movies that is made to win an award and others that that are trully masterpieces. I call Savin Private Ryan, Brokeback Mountain and Django Unchained masterpieces. They deserved it.
YES - Although the Academy seemed to kind of make up for that with the ELEVEN awards "Return of the King" received! I was BLOWN AWAY by FOTR and especially the "Extended Cut". I doubt any other director, including Lucas or Spielberg could have pulled off what Peter Jackson did. What astounds me is not how great it was, but how many ways it could have stunk! They nailed the casting, the costumes, the cinematography, the scoring (OMG! Thank GOD for Howard Shore!), the script, the editing, the special effects. It could have been campy or stuffy or even too high brow. SOO many little things that after almost twenty years I can still find something new once and a while like when the fellowship passes the Argonath, you can see on the left the hill upon which a structure seems to be at the top - Amon Lhaw (The Hill of the Ear)! They stuck so much in for the fans! Yet they made the movie for the fans of good movies! A balancing act that was done to near perfection!
I don’t care what people said about Argo been inaccurate, is still a amazing movie. Here are other great inaccurate movies: Braveheart, Schindler list, The Patriot, Black Hawk down, The Hurt Locker, and Amadeus.
this is a good example of why awards shows are ridiculous and when artists get upset at being snubbed is pointless. so many of the losers are timeless. I've seen a couple of the winners once but will. never watch again But I don't think I'll ever get tired of Good fellas

Wow, my spelling sucks big time.
Sorry, for the typos.
Nothing against Slumdog Millionaire, but Dark Knight should’ve won!
I would've also voted for Wall-E that year.
Nope
What a Joke? Slumdog was a Masterpiece and not some high priced Studio Film. Every Scene in the entire film was incredible. It is far better in story, direction, emotion, everything. Just not full of high priced actors.
Kevin Reily So you’re saying that The Dark Knight can’t be a better movie just because it had a higher budget and higher paid actors? Movies shouldn’t be judged on whether they’re popular or not. Looking back you can clearly tell which film had the greater impact on cinema
As an indian, I can clearly tell that Slumdog millionaire is one of the most overrated movies. The dark knight was far better and impactful.
Brockback mountain is beautiful!!!
I love that movie!
In my top 5 of all time. Got the movie poster in my garage.
As much as I love Goodfellas, I can't hate on Dances With Wolves. Dances helped to rejuvenate a genre that was so close to death that they were about to take it off of life support and let it die!
I agree. Dances with Wolves was paradigm shifting. Goodfellas felt tainted as Godfather 3 stunk up the joint that same year.
Dances had a better story and was more watchable.
The western, if it was to survive at all, needed rejuvenation. It seems the war genre has taken its place now.
Singin' in the Rain was released the same year as High Noon and The Greatest Show on Earth, and it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture.
Singin' in the Rain, unfortunately, has a plot that makes no sense.
Artemis Strong it actually does it details the changes of Hollywood politics
Shawshank redemption
InitialXG agreed. I thought it would be #1
Over Forrest Gump?
That's questionable
Miljan Kostadinovic Forest Gump is a fantastic movie. That being said, how many times do you hear people mention Forest Gump on the top 10 movies of all time. Not much. The Shawshank Redemption on the other hand...
As far as I’m concerned The Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction are considerably superior films
Agreed, pulp fiction and shawshank redemption are superior movies, but you can't say that the quality difference between them is as big as these movies from the list
Forrest Gump is fucking close to both movies, so it's okay for it to win the award
12 Angry Men was better than The Bridge on the River Kwai
This one is extremely debatable because both end up in best films of all time lists
it's unfair to say that because they are both really good
Don't if that statement is 100% correct because of BORK, but I gave it a thumbs up.
I can't help thinking of Space Balls when it comes to the Bridge on the River Kwau. Dink Dink Dink Dink Dink Dink Dink
Dark knight should have won best picture of that year , because I don't remember or care who was up against it !
Mikey' Michael It was Slumdog Millionaire.
Agree.
The dude even said it’s great, but the point of the list is which film stood the test of time the best.
Psycho should have won. It is the first slasher flick.
The King's Speech had maybe the best scene ever so I'm very forgiving on that one.
Ken Hansen dude, right? Great movie overall aswell.
I actually do quite enjoy Kings speech. But it’s hard to say it deserved the win when social network might be the best movie of the whole decade
The best scene ever is the prank call on Ferris bueller
Zach Ruggiero my personal favorite of the decade is The Master, but i also love The Social Network.
The reason why Saving Private Ryan didn’t win was MiraMax’s use of campaigning and bribing Academy voters to choose Shakespeare Fall In Love
No
It didnt win because it was Just a rehash of every single film made about the war years.
Derivative, but with famous actors.
It really wasnt that good
No one on earth has enough money to bribe award ceremonies.
Shawshank Redemption and Pulp Fiction we're both more deserving than Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump was undoubtedly great, but Shawshank and Pulp Fiction rank among the best movies of all time. I can't believe they're not mentioned anywhere on this list.
BrentitoHD all three of those films if released in different years should have been oscar winners
well i guess u can say 1994 was a great year of movies
Totallly agree!!
Forrest Gump is sentimental tripe, and isn't that good. There's no way it should have beat Shawshank Redemption & Pulp Fiction.
Forrest Gump was a decent movie and it hasn’t aged as well as either Pulp Fiction or Shawshank.
Shawshank is *the* best movie of all time. Hands down.
#1 The Room
michal31131 o hi mark
Fabio Alves Show oh hey johnny
michal31131 good thinking!

The problem with The Room is its second half, where the story loses its essence and thriller.

Shawshank not winning at least cinematography still annoys me
The irishman right now
Although Psycho is a true classic and was really revolutionary, how can The Apartment be on this list?! truly one of the greatest movies ever, pure cinema, great directing, acting and screenplay. Just as perfect as a movie can get.
The Apartment is a masterpiece, and richly deserves its ongoing reputation as one of the great classics of American cinema.
I was going to make the same comment, I’m glad there are others of like mind!
I'd say they're about the same. Both are masterpieces in their own ways.
Apocalypse now is beautiful. I read “the heart of darkness” in my literature class, and my dad told me I was old enough to watch the modern adaptation(apocalypse now) with him. Been waiting to watch that movie since I was 10, about time😂
Still can't believe Kramer vs Kramer won that year, bullshit
One of the greatest films ever made. Watch the original.
Brokeback Mountain,Psycho,Goodfellas deserved best picture definitely
And Citizen Kane
And Saving Private Ryan
Harvey Weinstein bought that Shakespeare in Love Oscar
He also got it for Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lawrence, and both suck big time. 🙄

Good list, but The King’s Speech is absolutely flawless to me.

I think The dark knight overshadowed slumdog millionaire easily.
Slumdog millionaire was pretty good.

The Ten Commandments vs Around the World in 80 Days (1956)
Saving Private Ryan deserved oscar
At least Spielberg won best director
The Dark Knight is still a film that sparks conversation, who’s the last person to mention Slumdog Millionare?
You just did!
BidM142 Slumdog millionaire absolutely deserved the Oscar. Brilliant in every aspect
Wheeler Knight The Dark Knight is widely considered as a top 5 movie of the century and nobody has even thought of Slumdog Millionaire in 12 years.
Brokeback Mountain should’ve won Best Picture over Crash.
scifinerd17 or Munich.
scifinerd17 they just wanna be nice to gay people
I loved Crash. One of my all time favorites.
2009 Oscars
Dark Knight overshadowed Slumdog Millionaire
and shawshank overshadowed forrest gump
witch wasn't even that good in the first place
Dark Knight might be one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time but superhero movies never win so not very surprised. Black Panther was the first superhero movie even nominated for best picture. I do think Slumdog was a great movie though so I am not upset about it. At least Heath Ledger won because that was the by far the best acting in any superhero movie of all-time and one of my favorite performances ever
not mad. all due respect & love to an amazing individual who was gone to soon and individual perf. well deserved however slumdog millionaire was a great film as well.
NOT OK with the social network and the King's speech at all. King's speech was way superior
The Master was better then Argo and Zero Dark Thirty
Yes!!
Amen. Shame the Academy was too cowardly to embrace such a daring experience.
Will C since it was loosely based on Scientology it was Taboo for the academy
dave lae true.
So true. The Academy is way too conservative. It’s good that they’re finally inviting more young people to join.
Also the English Patient.
Jonathan Rodriguez Admittedly, that was the price paid for Pulp Fiction losing to Forrest Gump.
Fact.
Exactly. Chicago wasn’t even that amazing SMH
1952 had at least three movies way better than The Greatest Show on Earth: High Noon, Singin' in the Rain and The Bad and the Beautiful.
Max Cady absolutely! Those three are masterpieces!
Max Cady singing in the rain was just so so good
Singin' in the Rain should have won Best Picture that year, but it wasn't even nominated.
@@laurajones1773 probably because it initially received a mixed critical reception.
The social network was great. But come on now. Inception should have won best picture for sure.
social network is way better than inception
Are you on crack?
Absolutely not
Inception?? No way man
@Mr Glass yeah! It did have Leo and that guy from third Rock from the sun it had some sweet effects. It was a good movie but I was surprised when it got nominated for Best picture. Social network however, was way better than the King's speech. King's speech was kind of boring
And you forgot the most infame robbery of all. The pianist overshadowed by Chicago.
colliric but he won best director...
BJH 2112 Yeah and he shouldn't have. Rob Marshall should have taken that prize home as well.
None of them are too good. 25th Hour, The Bourne Identity, Catch Me If You Can are much more better movies.
Oh then Pianist should have won hands down. It was only this year that child rapists who are Liberals were frowned on by Hollywood.
Just because he's raped a child doesn't mean he's not a great director. He probably shouldn't win person of the year, sure, but an Academy award has nothing to do with what happens outside of directing.
I’d say HAL is easily the most accurately terrifying villain ever, with the dawn of AI becoming serious half a century after the movie
The fact that he remain so calm all the time is even more creepy
No mention of Do the Right Thing losing Best Picture to Driving Miss Daisy?

IMO the kings speech was totally deserving. I love inception social network and toy story 3 (all 4 in my top 50 movies) but I think it stands above them besides inception
The "Goodfellas" snub was felt in my soul
Pesci got best supporting actor at least
Missing on the list is Raging Bull: overshadowed by Ordinary People.
He said that in the beginning
Dr. Strangelove > My Fair Lady
im suprised no one in the comments has mentioned how pretty much any film made in 2017 can beat the shape of water
I hated that movie.
maybe it´s because there would be a big debate about wich other movie was better.
"Phantom Thread"
The king’s speech was about a man over coming his debilitating speech impediment on a deadline with overwhelming pressure from all corners of society. It shows the friendship created between two men working towards a common goal. It shows some amazing character development too. I’d rather watch this than a movie about Facebook
I’ll never forget. I was a kid watching the ‘77 Oscars, and I was so mad that “Annie Hall” won for Best Picture over “Star Wars”! ........ BLASPHEMY!!
star wars is a classic. but Annie Hall is one of the most deserving best-picture ever. it some of the best acting and writing in all of film.
Lmfao Annie Wall deserved to win over Star Wars.

"The Greatest Show on Earth" wasn't the greatest show on Earth in 1952. It was "Singin' in the Rain."
True.
yes, singing in the rain should have won the oscar. they should have included it too
Ten million percent agree.
Django unchained is way better
I'm surprised that Django Unchained/Les Miserables overshadowing Argo wasn't on the list. Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Eddie Redmayne, Russel Crowe, and Anne Hathaway were all phenomenal in their respective roles in their respective films. And the stories that both movies tell are magnificent.
I consider Raiders of the Lost Ark and Chariots Of Fire a close decision. Both are exceptionally great movies
It might just be me, but hasen't Star Wars "slightly" overshadowed Annie Hall?
Nope.
Just slightly 😂
Big time
Annie Hall is a great movie
But it is not STAR WARS
Annie Hall was great, but it's hardly had the impact of Star Wars
It was ridiculous Goodfellas didn't win.
That's the biggest Oscar mistake in my opinion. Fargo is another.
no Dances was better i think
Dances with Wolves was better
Not really and I say that liking Goodfellas more. As great a Goodfellas is and I think it is, Dances With Wolves just has a lot more going for it. Got to remember, these awards are not simply about popularity.
No. "Dances With Wolves" deserved the Best Picture win. That's the problem with the Oscar season. Pretty much every nominee is deserving of the acclaim, but the film that excels in every aspect is the winner. That's, unquestionably, "Dances With Wolves".
Brokeback mountain is here so I’m good❤️
Sometimes the Academy doesn't get it right.
Sometimes they get them wrong all the time
Most of the time
Neither do audiences. Take one look at the winners and nominees of the People's Choice Awards and you'll see.
No one is perfect.

"The Breakfast Club"
"The Purple Rose Of Cairo"

Kings speech over social network every day of the week
ditto see my my comment
agree 100%
i honestly hated social network
Amen to this. King's Speech is one of the greatest!
But not better than Inception honestly.
Nobody will remember Blade Runner in 5 years. Three Billboards and Mother! are the movies of the year.

I really like both films, but I think Psycho is a superior movie.
The Apartment was such a beautifully tragic yet fun movie. I love how well it integrated comedy into what could've been a very dark movie about how to cope with someone attempting suicide

well, everyone has different opinions, so I respect your opinion.
It will always be a mystery to me how "Gandhi" won over "ET:The Extraterrestrial" or "Tootsie" at the 1983 Oscars. Granted, it's got its merits, but isn't as celebrated in movie history as the other two. Even Richard Attenborough thought as much!
Caitriona Quigley it was "confused"
It was such an epic movie that appealed to the 80's Oscar bait. But I definitely prefer ET and Tootsie as well
Jacob El Mahir Tootsie was a bit innovated, very funny of Dustin Hoffman to play a pretending elder woman
Sci-Fi and comedy used to be badly underrated by the Academy, and sweeping epics overrated. FWIW, I think both of your alternates are better than Gandhi (especially ET), but it was pretty predictable.
Duke OfOmnium how ?
Colin Firth certainly deserved an Oscar for his performance in The King’s Speech that’s for sure.
Saving Private Ryan... Is one of the best movies ever.
you mean worst and overrated
+Tamás Sutus is agree way overrated the thin line is way better someday people will call it the second best snapped picture since 2001 Odyssey
It's sappy overtones and nonstop tropes ruined an otherwise well made film. I wouldn't give it best picture that year or any year.

So do the Golden Globes, the Emmys, and especially the Grammys.
Saving Private Ryan shits all over Shakespeare in Love
The fact that inception didn’t win is outrageous
That's because it was ridiculous.
Grow up! It is always about the money, regardless who win! Stronger lobby always wins!
I can't remember how many times I watched these to movies. So different yet so amazing...
#1 Interstellar
#2 The Social Network

Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring overshadowed A Beautiful Mind
I think Spirited Away should've won that year.
I don’t care what people said about Argo been inaccurate, is still a amazing movie. Here are other great inaccurate movies: Braveheart, Schindler list, The Patriot, Black Hawk down, The Hurt Locker, and Amadeus.
And I will take Back to the Future over top of Amadeus any day of the week! Twice if you give me a time machine.
and The King's Speech, for that matter.
@@KyleJWest-vn9kn Back to the future came out in 1985 Amadeus came out in 1984.
this is a good example of why awards shows are ridiculous and when artists get upset at being snubbed is pointless. so many of the losers are timeless. I've seen a couple of the winners once but will. never watch again But I don't think I'll ever get tired of Good fellas
I still can't fathom how Apocalypse Now lost in 79'. Oh right, it's the Academy Awards.
Kramer vs Kramer is as much of a masterpiece
2019: Roma, the favorite, blackkklansman overshadowed green book
Ya
Oscars don't give a shit about Netflix movies
The Favorite is honestly a masterpiece
Diego Pisfil Roma is better then the favourite. The Favourite is super overrated
The King's Speech is one of the best films I've ever seen and the Social Network already seems dull and dated.
Yup. Social Network was reality TV with overblown drama that Mojo seems to worship. King’s Speech a much better movie.
Goodfellas was such a surprise because it is the masterpiece of Scorsese's filmography and that's really saying something. My 4th favourite movie.
The Social Network overshadowed The King's Speach? Please stop talking about films now
Well personally I have seen both and I like more The Social Network more in its pacing but both are great films, the King Speach manages better tension. In the end it is really subjective
Social Network is better in every conceivable way
Hey, Raging Bull is one of the best films ever and is not on this list. What's happening?
milko eduardo cáceres soto and taxi driver.
But it is mentioned.
What’d it lose to?

"Ordinary People"--seen it??
Laust Cawz I have not so I cant give an opinion. Is it good?
Saving private Ryan so much better than any movie in 1998
Greatest War Movie EVER! It was ROBBED!
Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line, The Truman Show, The Big Lebowski and especially American History X...
@Ryan Akwar I haven't seen it yet
Fucking A!!! I loved the big Lebowski!!
inception is probably even better than the social network yet still lost to kings speech
Inception is undeniably one of the most overrated movies of all time.
Inception is better than kings speech but nowhere near as good as social network
@@Abison07 u need to have a brain to like it
@@krishtandon7212 You need to have a movie taste to think its that great. I can tell you are a Gen Z because of the 'U', casual movie goer.
@@Abison07 first of all, that was just a joker.Second,I know everyone has their own opinion.Imception is just a little confusing to understand for many out there.I myself understood the whole thing after watching the movie twice.Third,I ain't any casual movie goer.
