@@PatrickRemington as a bearded man myself I have to agree but the hipsters can muddy the waters at times 😂😂😂. My apologies for doubting you and keep up the great work!!
I've worked in contruction for 20 + Plus years, I was sceptical at first... But I've learnt a lot and I'm really impressed and I'm going to give it a go.. Thanks for the videos and Well done.
Ah, the good ol' utility trailer work bench! I started on the floor of the garage/driveway, moved up to the tailgate of the truck, and then to the trailer. Even though I have a decent little shop WITH an actual workbench now, I still end up on the trailer/tailgate/floor most of the time. Awesome videos!
Thank you! Yeah, I have upgraded quite a bit since this video haha. But yes I find myself working on the floor of my shop or out in my driveway.. I’m always like, what am I doing??
@@PatrickRemington Exactly! I’ll find myself all spread out in the driveway, then turn around to see my empty shop and just shake my head and laugh. Old habits are hard to break I guess.
This is awesome. I have designed and started making a high top roof for our 2005 Chevy Astro van and this explains the resin/joinery process better than anything else I've found on You tube. Thank you for taking the time to create these videos! Well done.
I came here looking for ideas for my Land Rover as shop bought roof tents are a helluva price but instead it's given me an idea for my trailer roof. Light and quite cheap to build.Thank you.
Never knew about filets so that was cool. Looks like it hides a multitude of sins. The small imperfection became the highlights of the shape. Very nice job,
I've been building a teardrop trailer and was trying to figure out how to completely waterproof it and add strength while saving weight. Thanks to your vid i now know an awesome way to do it, Thanks!
Patrick, thank you for making this series; building a rooftop tent is enough work without addressing a camera. Your timing couldn't be more perfect for me! I'm working on converting my Honda Element into my full-time (rather small) home and I've been trying to figure out how to make a roof-top tent just like yours to expand my space. I'm using your series for guidance now so thank you so much!
I love Honda Elements! my sister has one. Great cars! Well, I hope these videos help you out! Just go slow, be patient with it and it will come together! if you have any questions let me know! I'm trying to respond to as many comments as I can but they are piling in faster than I thought they would!
Dude i LOVE your videos!! I have a smittybilt RTT that i paid about a grand for, and im planning on selling it to make my own BECAUSE of your videos!! Keep up the good work! Would love to see this continue!!!
You are the only channel to cover such a build and I subscribed just so i can get the updates on this build can see many uses for this technic including a permanent lean too for a remote campsite . Thank you fir this build and looking forward to the finishing touches
Thank you Patrick. Well done! You are making this series as I am planning a hard-sided-hardtop Rooftop-Pod where keeping weight down is of utmost importance. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Thank you so much for making this series! As a college student, a rooftop tent is wayy out of budget, but building one is not, and it’s great to have these videos to follow along, so thank you for that!
wow; Patrick this is awesome I always wanted one for me, but price was too high, i’m very skillful guy and after seeing your video’s inspired me to do one por my honda CRV,I like to go camping it will be perfect, thanks for doing all this, God Bless You, and keep doing the good work
I'm working on building an adventure trailer and thought I had it all planned out. Until I came across your video. LOL So many new ideas! Thank you for the epoxy info!
Talcum powder costs less than wood flour and works great, but the resulting fillet takes forever to sand (hard as rock). Don't forget wax paper is your friend when working with epoxy, for masking and smoothing rough spots before the epoxy goes off. Smooth rough spots by laying wax paper over the area to be smoothed and roll or rub on top of the wax paper, moving the epoxy underneath.
Thankyou! I learned some new things here that I will use not just in building a hard top tent... I'm going to do mine little different because I don't want it on a rooftop rather on a frame or ground. Not sure yet plus I need mine bigger.
These creations are inspired brother. I’m on the market for my first car currently and I am going to build something similar prior to vehicle purchase. Keep up the great work, god bless. Love from AUS.
Really liking this series so far. Keep up the good work. Having done a cedar strip canoe in the past, you've given me a lot of food for thought as to how to apply that technique to this type of project. Thanks!
Very nice!! I've been kicking around doing the same thing, after seeing the prices of roof top tents. I'm glad I'm not the only one to think of building one this way!!
3 things I love in this video. The crisp angles and lines in the design details of the top, the cat, and the gratuitous “snap” of the gloves every time you put them on. Its the same thing I do when putting on gloves in my shop, but I always add the phrase “bend over!” When I snap them :-)
I'm learning a lot from these videos. Thank you for taking the time and doing them! I have a question. Why use epoxy, instead of cocking? Again, I am learning, not trying to sound like a smartass!
19 minutes? it was like a 3 min video...wow! Keep with that job, it looks awesome! I am looking to take a roof box like a model, obviously doing the tent bigger but with the same shape... Have a good day!!
A buddy of mine loves the two part epoxy. He's built several boats with great results. He told me that you can make sawdust from just about any hardwood scrap you've got laying around as long as it's dry ( no pine or pressure treated) in place of wood flour. The other tip he gave me was to measure my liquids and then mix my sawdust and epoxy then add the hardener. Not sure what the reason for that
In the holiday season, this is a gift! If nothing else, it's serving as some serious inspiration. I wonder how tricky it would to add an access hatch so kids could climb into their nest through a sun roof? Thank you so much for sharing!
Looks great, was thinking you could have saved a lot of weight by using thinner ply and then adding fiberglass cloth to the epoxy for extra strength. I want to make one lightest as possible so even thinking of using foam instead of ply and strengthening it with epoxy and cloth front and back. Also, do without the base together and have the mattress wrapped in waterproof canvas and placed directly on top of the car roof.
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing this skill. I’m in the same boat as far as not having the money to buy one. I’m hoping to build something like this with my son.
Nice job, light and water proof, stay in Italy a company make the same job exactly like you from decades they call "maggiolina" tent make from outdoor camping. 👍
Really enjoying your videos, great job explaining everything thoroughly while keeping it simple. I’m a roof top tenter myself, however not home made. This is an excellent way to save some big bucks!
Thanks for this I am not to worried about weight can I use a harder wood I am 6"2 350lb needs to be strong I love the accomplishment feeling when you do it yourself
Cool, awesome job! Could you have used brads instead of the staples and left them in? Also after the epoxy fillets dried on the outside I'm guessing you could have used some bondo to help smooth out the edges / corners?
black99vett you could definitely use brads and leave them in. I just used a staple gun since it's a super cheap and accessible tool. I'll finish the exterior at the end but I'll be using Bondo to get everything smooth so the paint will look good
Wow ! I was looking to buy a rooftop tent for my samurai but man they are so expensive ! Your video instantly catched my attention ! Thats awesome work, i think i'll try to make mine this summer ! Thanks a lot for the idea / inspiration / techniques :)
Wow, man. Super inspiring videos. I appreciate the time you take to put all your effort here for everyone to learn/enjoy. I'd love to build something like this. It might just happen.
Hey I’m super stoked you making these very awesome videos! I started fabricating racks for roof tents and wanted to build my own tents and this is so motivating! Thank you for doing these !

Wood "flour" is free from any floor installer. Saw dust from a floor sander.....
