Hey, it looks great. However, like all similar tents, it's pretty thick. Do you think it's possible to make it slim, or there is some reason behind the thickness? (apart from aerodynamics and making the back thicker than the front).
@@szymonkedzior I like to keep my collapsable ladder and some bedding in the tent so I don't have to pack it inside the car that's why I build mine a little thicker but you definitely don't have to build it that way. You can make it much thinner without any problem.
I really love this video, I wanted to just take a few minutes to check it out and save it for later, but once watching it, I couldn't turn it off. I think you do a terrific job of explaining things. I really want to take on this job even though it is way over my head, and I really don't have the time to dedicate to it. I don't have the money to buy one, but I really want one, so hopefully I can start the project and just go at my pace. Even if it doesn't work out I have learned a lot just by watching this. Thanks for teaching us and making it look easy!
So happy to see it finished!! Was looking to see if anyone has made a DIY Trail Nest (roof rack hammock stand) and nothing showed up. So you're the man I come to in hopes you'll take on this challenge!
dude, this RTT is simply amazing. It is actually something I´ve been thinking of doing myself. Congrats bro, wonderful job!! Totally love it and thanks for sharing every step you made. Enjoy it with your loved ones!! Cheers from Argentina!
This is truly outstanding in every respect! What an absolute masterclass this build is, hugely inspiring, superb information and advice, and a great contribution to the knowledge base of the Self Build community! It doesn't get better than this! Thank you for sharing and inspiring.
Awesome work Patrick.... I love the attention to details and the explanation... Been following your channel from the start and I have built an awning exactly like you did!! Just want to mention here to put wiring behind the top roof fabric for 12v leds/charging phone , I think it's a must. Also a small black mesh window will help in the summer for air circulation. Looks solid Bro... Congrats again!
Here from the start, and when I got the notification for this video the other day, I got super excited! Can't wait to eventually build one for myself. I already have used some of your awning videos to inspire my own diy version.
Fantastic work! You inspired me and I'm completing my own rooftop now. You gave it a wonderful finish but my jeep being "black raptor" I went that route for my RTT as well. Yours looks much better than mine does! Thank you for sharing your entire process, you've helped me with my own DIY RTT!
You made me realize i can order a cheaper wedge style rtt like the one i keep seeing for 1200$ on amazon and i can upgrade it with better latches, fabric or struts in the future to fit my needs. Thank you for being so informative!
Allelujah !! Congratulations ! The final result is just awesome ! Thank's a lot for this new Video. I hope that the virus finally left you alone and that you and your familly are well ! Thanks again !
01/27/2022 Hello Patrick, I was just thinking about closing the openings next to your truck on both sides and maybe under the truck to stop the wind and some rain. The openings could be covered with a piece of tarp held in place on the truck with magnets. Like Velcro, magnets can be glued to the tarp and attached to the truck metal body. The top closure could be string tied to the tent frame since the weight of the tarp will be supported by the magnets on the truck. You could close the tent to the tarp with magnets also both front side and rear side. Now for the breeze you could make a tarp between the truck body and the ground attached to the metal with magnets. You could also cover over the hood above the plastic trim down with magnets. Simple cheep and easy. To connect the tarp to the sidewalls you can glue the magnets to the new tarp and use loose magnets on the outside of the tent at that opening. That may make a 30 degree evening feel like a 45 degree evening. Sincerely Don
Absolutely brilliant!!! Sure as heck beats dropping $4k on a fabric domicile. Two thoughts... 1. You might silicone all the screw holes in the aluminum trim around the outside and on the piano hinge. Driving through a good rainstorm will force water into areas like that. It'll help prevent rot that you won't see for years. 2. You might want to add some 1" black webbing strips in each of the tall vertical corners. It looks like that is where the fabric is tightest and will be susceptible to stretching. Loose fabric on a RTT sounds like a thundering hurricane in the slightest of breezes on a cool, quiet mountain evening. ***Gotta admit, I stole that idea from my CVT tent that has reinforcement webbing stitched on the inside of the tent. 3. Third and bonus tip...I know I said two...maybe seam seal the stitching around the zippers?!?! It'll help keep those areas waterproof in driving rain. (Seriously. One bad rain storm at 12k feet above Telluride and I found ALL the weaknesses in my overpriced and overhyped CVT!)
You've got to be super brilliant! keep us posted on your own project whenever you've gone down that road yourself, and make sure you've stressed on these super genius thoughts...........
Looks awesome. Make me one. *** as a note why note apply some adhesive silicone on the inside of the extruded aluminum trim between it and the shell too make it more watertight instead of adding it along the edge? Again, congrats it looks amazing.
Hey man, I've got a pop top for my van and its got 2 elasticated buckled straps connecting both sides of the fabric so that when you shut the roof it brings the sides in on its own so they dont get caught along the edges, could be something simple for you to add? :) Love these videos loads!!
Thank you for this Patrick! I've binge watched your build series. Thank you for being thorough and take time to put these vids together. I can't wait to get started on a build. Do you have an approximate materials cost put together?
looks amazing. just wondering how it will hold up in high winds with only the gas struts if the wind will blow it closed on you? now with that spiffy back ladder maybe a rear entrance and canopy? love your work. please keep the builds up.
Love it man, Just keeps getting better and better! This week was the third anniversary of our version of your RTT build. We're in Texas now, I think I might build a new one using some of your new tips.
Big Thanks For You , but did you make a video that showing the fabric doors I mean how did you make the doors of the tent the zippers and the stitching of the doors? My Best Regards To You My Friend
With tent and Gobi ladder on, can you open and close the rear hatch no problem? No clearance issues between ladder and hardshell? And if so, could you go without side ladder, and just use the Gobi style permanently attached one for tent entry and exit? Thanks!
Yes! I can move the tent forward enough to where there is no contact when the hatch is open. I could do without the side ladder since I have rear access to the tent
@@PatrickRemington awesome, thanks for the reply. I’ve seen quite a few other folks still using side ladder instead of ladder on hatch so figured I’d ask.
@@dallasbryant6740 yeah it probably just depends on the vehicle and the roof rack they have.. all my stuff is handmade by me so I can customize things a little more 🤷♂️
@@PatrickRemington honestly both. I tried some I got off Amazon for an awning but I ended up going with waterproof canvas. I would like weight you have, are there some numbers I should keep in mind while looking online?

I took a look through the comments and may have missed it, but where did you source the tent fabric? The sides of the tent that is? Thanks man. Hell of a build
Can you make one with access from the moonroof? That’s what many of us need. If something bad happens I don’t want to exit the tent to get into the car!!!
I think if I knew how or had the tools to build sth like this, I would definitely build a panoramic glass roof with auto tint or something like that. But what do I know?
I may have missed it, but what are the plans for the other/red fold out roof tent? The one where you smashed your finger when installing it up on the top of your rig? (Sorry for bringing back bad memories on the finger ☺️)
How is it going so far? Not too cold in winter and too hot in summer? You don’t have any ventilation, so it must be very wet inside in the morning… I would suggest you to add another layer for insulation and insert some windows (high) for air flow…

I totally think it's possible especially with the full length roof rack that I built. I've thought about making that mod on the chanel. I think the tent needs to be slid forward a bit to make it work. 👍
American made but you used the absolute trash China material, make it with cotton canvas. All for having a go at things yourself but I know this has probably cost you more than it would have to just buy a Chinese one that’s better
Let me help you out.. instead you could have said something to the effect of, good job man for trying it out yourself and sharing instead of just buying a cheap china made version. The Tent weighs 137 lbs. I know you were wondering.
