Already done yours! I've used it in total for over 20 nights outside including a 10 day trip to Italy and it worked perfectly! I used your hinges and upgraded some parts for better mantainance. I loved the idea of the walls on the lower part and used it when it was too cold with a decathlon mini oven inside to keep me warm. Now I'm working on expanding this area and at the moment it looks great! Thank you!
Great video, nice editing, and very cool to find that someone has already done an idea I've been thinking about for a while down south in Australia. Commercial RTTs are overblown in cost when good quality regular tents are so much cheaper and you just need a platform to get them off the dirt. I'm hoping to come up with a much thinner profile, around 15cm or about 6 inches, closed. Must have been a great trip. Love that you did this for a wagon. Thanks so much for recording your efforts and sharing.
@@haihappenmoe5090 Gesicherte Ladung? Da hat der TÜV nichts zu sagen, oder? Nur die rausstehende Leiter wäre eventuell ein Problem für Streifenpolizisten.
Nice build of course. Nifty table that. I have never used roof tent, so the idea is a bit foreign for me. Best solution I had when on the road was to sleep in the car. But I had a tent to put all the stuff in. In camp I put all the lugagge in the tent and there was lot of room in the car. Maybe even quicker set up time. Rooftent also takes more gas.
This is so funny, I have thought of this, even made a drawing with parts and all... Even with the exact same tent! Never got around to it, glad someone did!
I’m so glad I came across this video. I have the same tent but the 4 person size. I have been planning on doing this to a trailer. Thank you for the video!❤
Thank you for sharing your ideas and talents. Wish I were there. Your build is creative, inspiring my mind to create a better camping tent atop my utility trailer. Happy trails. Steven, Utah, USA
Hi. I was wondering if you can fold it anyway even if you dont cut the rod. What happens if you try to fold it with the rod in its place? If it's possible to do it without to cut anything i would prefer it.... Nice work anyway.

@@CraftAndu Good news and good travels with your rooftop tent.I'm going to put a roof on my bike and try it out ! Beautiful scenery - well done and good luck for your next adventure ( which won't be stealth car park camping Steve Wallis style ? )
Hi. Very interesting project! I am curious about the roof capability of the car. Typically wagons have around 80-100kg max load rating for the roof rack. No offense intended but i would imagine that two adults + all the structure that you built is over 100kg. I would guess somewhere around 130-150kg total, in static weight only, not accounting for any sudden move. Did you have any issues with something bending/flexing? Cheers
Well, I can only answer for my wagon. This thing is a VOLVO! I have hauled some serious weight on there without any problems. Check out this photo: www.media.volvocars.com/global/en-gb/media/photos/6212 But in all honesty I did not notice any flex in the rails whatsoever. I am certain that that these rails are typically rated 2-3 times lower than what they are actually able to handle.
Great work! Possibly dumb question, but instead of cutting the tent poles in half and joining them to the platform hinges, couldn't it be possible to use the eyelets for tent stakes to bolt the tent to the platform (the non moving part)? That would allow multiple uses of the tent.
Buen video... Solo tengo dusdas con las medidas de las visagras que no tengo ni ideas de las dimensiones y la posición de los agujeros que sostienen las varillas de la tienda... Buen trabajo felicidades
This is so well built, great work! I'm planning to drive from germany all the way to north cape in august, hopefully all goes well and my car doesn't break down on this 9000km roadtrip ^^
Really nice work and concept. Not sure of the practicality, however. With the Quechua (I've owned one), particularly that model (no vestibule) you have no protection from water ingress when entering or exiting. Manageable on the ground, not so on the roof. Very open ingress option. Where do you put your shoes? (You could set up small bags under the platform which can be reached while entering, but, again, not so good in the rain). Not a concept killer, but not a design I'd be happy with as is. Perhaps look at a clip on entrance idea? Trouble is, that starts to add to the complexity of set-up. An easy(ish) solution would be to add a single arched pole at the front (inserting into the platform in the same manner as most dome tents have their support poles inserted) with a simple fly which clips to the side of the platform further back. Easy to deploy. As for the walls, perhaps make them again but angled out. This would provide more room to make them usable. Not much shelter under the platform otherwise. You'll find most people who have the fold-out style roof top tents rarely use the walls either. They just seem to be too much trouble on what is designed to be a quick set up (whether these fold-out tents provide a quick set up is another discussion, one of the reasons I sold mine...). Again, very nice job.
I agree - this setup could be made more user friendly. And yeah I also agree that rooftop tents are not the most practical unless you are camping on a really rough terrain. Thanks for the comment!
Great build, I am glad that you had a bit of an adventure with it. I have a V50 and I wanted to put a commercial roof top tent on it. My issue is that the tent is +-80kg, then add two adults and I was not sure if the rails will take the mass. Ultimately I put the tent on a trailer. Your solution seems to be a lot lighter.
Sure it will take the weight. Car roof rack ratings 50-75 kgs mean that load that heavy becomes dangerous in case of accident, sudden stop etc. Roof rails will easily take 300-400 kgs while car is stationary
It's me again. You wrote about the hinge plans. I drew a design in fusion. However, I am not sure that I chose the dimensions well. I am particularly concerned with the diameters and the arrangement of the holes. I am also curious what thickness of the sheet you used. 4mm plans. I would be grateful for help! Regards!
No I did not. The tent is attached with screws via loops on the corners and some electrical clips. And of course to the hinge. You might get a better idea if you read the build article (link in info). Hmm, other than making the bottom of the tent more waterproof somehow I cant really think of any other way to improve it.
I was telling my son today about the tonou cover I made 20 years ago for my 98 s10. I belive it was the first 'inside the bed' tonou cover of its kind that had two sections. What is advence for two people sleeping in roof tent instead of sleeping in van (there is a lot of space in Volvo van when backseats are folded)?
Camping trips usually require a lot of equipment and it is pain in the ass to load and unload it from the car several times a day.
