The tent/strut stuff is great information, but the Dad stuff is way better. your daughter is about to be 2 years old. So much fun. My 2-year-old is 32 very soon and a grad student in chemistry. The years pass fast. Don't miss a thing. And don't let the difficult moments offset the great times. It works out.
Congrats on your new baby, I am a father of four and from experience I can tell you will be a great dad, love your vision and looking forward to building myself one like the s this coming year , saludos from Nicaragua
I have looked for a simple way to verify proper strut mounting position for over a week.. Awesome video and detailed explanation in Lehman’s terms.. No geometry calculations needed!!! Lol.. Much appreciated.
Congratulations on the little girl! Mine started kindergarten this year trust me time flies. Thank you for the video series I'm looking at overlanding as a way spend time with my daughter.
I'm an upholsterer(old)...done this many times ...wrap a layer of vinyl over your hinge then screw thru it but should have the step up too...God bless...doug
Wow! Thank you very very much for doing this build. You have taken me to one entirely new level! Congratulations on your little girl… That is awesome.!
Thank you for a clear explanation on where to mount the brackets. I am mounting Struts on a 6' x 12' lean too metal roof. Looked all over youtube and you have the BEST!!!!
Congratulations Patrick & wife on you guys becoming Parents to a such Cute daughter. Patrick you are a God Send to us DIYers! .So Informative, Detailed Instructions, Supplier Info etc. I Admire you for Teaching me how to Sew. Now I can get a Machine & sow Curtains for my Van Windows etc. No-one on this Forum would do that for us. A Big God Bless! from Toronto Canada.
You are a great, passionate, selfless, sharing, caring man, thanks for such a timely reply, yes you are right about the mods.....one more question if I switch hinges would you go with T HINGES OR JUST REGULAR DOOR HINGES?......really and truly Patrick you are the easiest, simplest, most thoughtful you tuber ever, everything is so precise and easy to understand/apply awesome job man really inspiring,I’m amazed at how well I’m building this thing with you’re instruction
Congratulations 🎈🎊🍾 to you and your wife on the baby 👶🏻 girl... truly such a miracle and blessing from God... and I must say EXCELLENT job on the build... I'll be utilizing your videos to assist me in my build... a custom f150 bed-cap camper with a pop-top tent ⛺️... thanks 🙏🏻 for sharing your information and videos..
Awesome video congrats on becoming a dad. Since watching your videos I’ve been sketching up a whole bunch of rooftop tent ideas. Thanks again for sharing your ideas and information
You have the best video so far for gas Strut installs!!! I have 2 situations on strut installs and this helped way more than the other many videos!! Thank you so much.
Thanks for the info on where to get the gas struts. I've already bought the wrong one on amazon .I'm building a mini camp trailer that the whole backend opens up for access to the kitchen outside. Hopefully these people can hook me up with the right ones to do the job.
I am now in the final stages of my build.. your videos have the perfect amount of information vs chat.. thank you very much, its turning out really really nice.. fun project!
Was thinking you could use rubber or vinyl flashing on the front so when is closed it'll keep moisture/water from coming in. And congrats on being a new dad!
Patrick Remington in so glad RUclips had your video in my feed, this is a gold mine of information. I also thought in lieu of using the 3/4" square for the top frame maybe extruded aluminum to help with weight. Might add to the cost but just stuff I thought of whilst watching your build. Can't wait for the next installment.
Thank you so much for all the details! I've spent weeks researching gas struts to support a trap door on my deck and THIS IS WHAT I'VE NEEDED!! Also congrats on the little girl 😻
Congrats cobber on being a Dad :). I could tell by the smile on your dial that you were stoked about the struts working... as well you should be. Cheers for sharing mate :) Peace, from Australia.
congrats on newborn and big thankyou for showing me the way to fix the structs on your roof box i have built a storage box with double door as well as roof i now know how to do it thanks to you keep up the fantastic work you do PS, ive been looking at others they did not do it as easy as you :-)
Just a thought... The people that build teardrop trailers use what is called a "hurricane hinge" for the back hatch. You might want to check it out... Great Video by the way!!!
Congratulations on your new blessing, the additional family member your daughter Laura Grace! Excellent build so far, I wouldn't have known to use the wood filler epoxy to fill all the gaps wonderful idea! Looking forward to the tent mfg side of this build. Thanks for sharing.
I just found your rooftop tent videos the other day, and subscribed today. It’s really inspiring me to make one. I think the fillet technique is what’s selling me on making one out of wood. Your videos are great! More important, congratulations on being a new Dad!
Great information as usual. I was worried how I was going to install the struts you've helped tremendously. These videos are the next best thing to having you right here helping me build mine.Congradulations on your new addition all the best in the new year to come.Really looking forward to how you make the canvass or tent .Thanks again
Really great video! Some teardrop builders uses "Harsh-Environment Plastic Piano Hinge" sold by macmaster-carr . those hinges are chemproof and uv resistant and last a long time, installed simply by using wood screws. Most of all they are waterproof and silent. One other idea would be to use a bicycle inner tube layed down first after you butt the two units end to end. Your roof profile is really nice and I can see why when your finished it looks so much like a commerical unit. Best wishes to you! Thanks!
This project is looking great. Congratulations to you and your wife, and welcome to fatherhood, it's so awesome. 3x for me and ALL girls. In the future, can you do a video on the hinge system used on the full pop-up tent? I'm looking at building that type as I'm 6'2 and would like to have the full floor area of headroom. Thanks again, for sharing with us all. 👍
Congrats on the little girl bro! 🤙 I’m going to be installing some lift struts on my dual swingout and trying to determine lengths and strengths myself. This was super helpful. Thanks as always Patrick!
Awesome! I have a trailer project and those metal socket struts are perfect. I've always had the plastic ones and they come out easily and break easily. Congrats on parenthood! Cheers! -M
Thanks for another great video and taking the time to explain the process in detail, Patrick. I watched your first DIY rooftop tent build video months ago and I'm really enjoying this latest series. We're currently looking for a vehicle to travel around Indonesia and this series of videos will I hope inspire us to have a go at making our own rooftop tent for the trip. I hope you're going to get your priorities right and put the video about the ripstop material before the wife and baby! Just kidding! Congratulations! Regarding the hinge, there is something called a hurricane hinge which is advertised as a leakproof and dustproof version of the piano hinge available online. I have never actually used one myself but it might be suitable.
@@PatrickRemington Hello Patrick ! Thanks for the video. Do you know the weight of the top of RTT (the hardshell) ? Mine is about 25 Kgs, it seams to be a lot more than yours, despite I used quite the same materials (8mm plywood, fiberglass, epoxy resin) and I'm affraid that the Gaz struts could give too much pressure on the attachments points... The point is also that I have not well understood how you calculate the strengh of your gas springs. Do you weigh it with a 45° opening and at the middle of the hardshell ? That's it ? I'm sorry for my poor English... To calculate the gaz struts, i also found this online website (in french) : www.verinagazenligne.fr/calculateur-verin-a-gaz/ Again, thank's for all your very detailed videos and the time you take to explain what you did.
Congratulations on the new addition. You might consider attaching a piece of rubber (think bike inner tube) along the outside of the hinge to further prevent water from getting inside. Use a drip rail on the top side to shed water.
Omg that is so cool. I love the series Haha the look on your face when the tent pops up is priceless. Congratulations on the baby. On a side note I am going to try and build this and put it on my ram 1500 truck bed. This is so awesome what your building.
Hi..l. Just discovered your channel. I am liking the idea of the tent. As for the hinges being a weather weak spot... What about taking a 2 1/2 inch wide strip of thin rubber and put it between where the screws go wrapping around the outside exposed part of the hinge? That would seal the hinge between the wood and the rubber while protecting the outside of the hinge!
Skip to 5:20 for strut info!
You can glue some tent material on the hinge covering it that will stop the rain 🌧 😁👍
Welcome to fatherhood!!!!! My little girl just turned 5 a couple months ago, it is an amazing journey, congrats to you and your wife!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS, EXCELLENT VIDEOS. I ASK: WHAT IS THE THICKNESS OF THE PLYWOOD SHEET??? HOW MUCH WAS THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THE TENT? HOW MANY KG ???
The tent/strut stuff is great information, but the Dad stuff is way better. your daughter is about to be 2 years old. So much fun. My 2-year-old is 32 very soon and a grad student in chemistry. Marguerite Young yeah I had thought of that! I'll definitely be coving it with rubber or vinyl!
I did this on a leaky galley hatch on a teardrop trailer no leaks since
Nice project. Binging the series now. Just an FYI though... 304 stainless will rust eventually. 👍👍
Congrats. Soon, you'll be able to employ the buddy system on your tasks!
Congratulations on the new arrival
