+Gareth Lloyd As I've said to many male friends of mine: there is absolutely NOTHING homosexual about having a man-crush on Josh Homme. His cool transcends gender.
No, he's just saying that Hendrix comprehensively owns the stratocaster when it comes to fuzzy rock n roll. And he' right. I like what Neil Young said best: there's nobody in the same building as Hendrix.
He's such a strong tough character and yet very simple and humble with his gear :D I like that. No fancy bullshit. Also like how he talked punk music and then the folk side - no wonder he made the most of a plain Epiphone Dot Ebony. Perfect combo for his both musical preferences. I like this guy.
Glad to hear it, man. It looks like the line-up now is quite tight - would you say so? I saw them a few years ago, can't remember much about it but I've never been anywhere near as into them as I am with QOTSA et cetera, et cetera. Indeed, it's pretty awful. I never look at the news, just catch glimpses of headlines and hear things through the grapevine, but I did watch that EoDM + Josh interview about the attack, about as close as I've gotten to it.
He's a very cool guy, with flaws and strong points (like all of us). He did play a Marshall almost exclusively while in Kyuss though, and a Les Paul on a few occasions (Homme gear from the Kyuss era up until 2 albums ago was one of my obsessions). I have photos of his setups from that era, with the Marshall and the Les Paul.
Yep, two JCM 900s, one driving two 4x12s, and the other an Ampeg 8x10, that was pretty much his setup 91 to about 95, with a 91 Les Paul Goldtop as the backup guitar. With ...And the Circus Leaves Town came the Tube Works amps and VT-40. There are pictures of them in Sound City in 95 making the record and that was the setup.
Carlo Von Sexron As far as I know, the Ampegs were never recorded or gigged while in Kyuss (Desert Sessions may be an exception, I don't know, and I bet they don't remember either with all those mushrooms). They made their appearance in the QOTSA era. There was also a BR Rich Mockingbird that Homme was playing - rarely (I have a photo of him with one somewhere).
bloodySunday77 If you watch Dave Grohl's Sound City documentary, there are photos in the film of Kyuss recording ...And the Circus Leaves Town with at least one VT-40 and a couple of the Tube Works amps set up,it's probably safe to assume he used them to record with prior to that. Te Mockingbird was his main gutar leading up to the recording of Blues for the Red Sun and it's probably also safe to assume it's on that album. Prior to the Mockingbird, circa 1987, he used a black Ibanez X Series guitar.
Carlo Von Sexron I didn't know that about the Ibanez or the BC Rich, I thought that his main ne back then was always the Ovation one. Live, I've also never seen Homme use an Ampeg while in Kyuss, and in the studio the magic of Goss was blending in God knows what. But very good to know, thanks!
bloodySunday77 Yeah, the Ampegs were never used live in Kyuss. The first Ampegs he used live were in the form of V4s around the Time of Rated R. Homme talks about it in the bonus commentary on Over the Years and Through the Woods, they got a sweet deal on gear from Guitar Center when they first started dealing vintage gear- they got 4 to 6 V2 cabinets- baffled 4x12 speakers around the size of a 6x10, 2 or 3 V4 heads, and all the road cases for $300. They were all white and apparently came straight out of storage from Rod Stewart's Hot Legs tour in the late 70s. I got a photo from that tour, 10 V2 cabinets, all with their own matching heads for the three guitarists, as well as a matching Sunn Model T and SVT with 810s setup for the bassist. Insane.
He has an amazing way of looking at his career, he wants to be his own person and be remembered for that. Like slash and his top hat, matt Bellamy in his Manson and as they said Hendrix in his strat! Everyone should try and bring something different to the table, that's why I love rock music so much it's real, people always try and make something better it's never the same, there's a lot of bands that sound similar but are so different in there style, example, queens of the Stone Age and foo fighters, they are the best of friends, completely different sounds though and style they can have one song that's about love, a friend, or just damn right heavy and amazing, foo with white limo compared to foo with say these days, same album and yet so different!! Unlike pop music, what is all about party, sex, ugly sluts, no respect for there fans, only care for the money, and all done on the computer, if everyone had the same knowledge in music as josh for example the sports will be an amazing place to live!
This is one of the best interviews for budding guitarists EVER! Having said that. You guys need to master your videos a little better. Interview volume was super low, and your music was SUPER LOUD.
In private, yes. On shows and recordings, no. Believe me, I have been collecting every bit of info I can about his setups (Kyuss and later) for years way before people started checking out his gear.
@mohitluthra007 thats like the easiest question to answer ever. Dave Grohl played drums tenacious D (those two dudes are in that band just incase u dont know) and queens of the stone age. Jack Black played his feet (stomping) on one queens song so theres lots of connections...
@mohitluthra007 Liam Lynch is the connection. He directed The Pick Of Destiny and also did the artwork for the QOTSA album Era Vulgaris and Them Crooked Vultures. He also sings the high notes on the Queens song 'Make it with chu' Jack Black stomps and claps on the Queens song 'Burn The Witch' (yes i should get out more)
+Christophe De Sloover Well if you've seen him live, that's his sound. Very rarely does he use a pedal except for solos and little parts like the beginning of Millionaire.
Yeah, but you can do your own thing on any guitar. I’m a Strat guy. But I have other kinds. They’re tools. You want heavy? Go Les Paul. You want to cut through? Go Strat. And everything in between. I think Josh is thinking more the image of himself with a guitar. Because he knows as well as anybody, you can get a lot of different sounds with just one good guitar, amp and a few well chosen pedals.
It’s interesting what Josh said about people using the same guitar as Greg Ginn and it looking like you just want to be Greg Ginn. He has always strived for his own individual thing which he did because whenever I see someone playing an Ovation GP Ultra (my total wish list guitar by the way) I always think that person wants to be Josh Homme.
@Soundgarden8497 Yeah but hello it's a show about guitars and guitarists, not a QOTSA interview! I agree it's stuff we already know about J-Ho but hopefully part 2 and 3 will mix it up...
Just saw Jesse Hughes at the Roxy last night, saw these guys in North Hollywood two weeks ago and now they're interviewing my hero. THESE ARE MAH PEOPLE! Oh yeah- sorry... I play on a strat. Because I am Hendrix biotch!
@mohitluthra007 Man! Josh Homme, Kyle Gass, Jack Black, Dave Grohl, Jesse Hugues...they're like the Justice Ligue Of America Of F#ckin Rockin Music! They've all worked together some timet! And I like to think they're all friends! F#ck I love them!
Nope. No guitar belongs to one person or style. It's a silly guitar-guy myth. Guitar, amp, effects, all of these can be adjusted and moved around to the point where you can create incredible and unique things, from a intro-level guitar to the highest-end guitar. To phonetically quote a paraphrase, "Lennon said, 'You give me a fucking tuber, I'll get you something out of it" Translation: Spend less time worrying about the brand of tool, and spend more time on building the fucking thing. What's odd is that he says it in the beginning - that he'd rather write than work on his guitar, yet he's a bit cunty on the brand of the guitar based on history. Weird. I love Josh Homme, he's truly created a great, unique sound, but his logic is a bit flimsy with this.
@@andrewsoper5434 I dont think hes saying that no one should be allowed, more that he wants to be famous for making something his own as well and he cant do that with a strat
how i wish this were subtitulated on spanish, i can understand just a little bit of they were talking. anyway, sorry 4 my shitty english greetings from the ass of the world, Chile!
"im just a dude from the desert" haha Josh Homme is awesome.
Anyone else here from hot ones?
Of course I am!!
Came back here because of it, yeah
i hope the hot ones will promote the shitt out of this ;D
Yup, absolutely
Yes.
Definitely got a man crush on Homme. I Fucking hate how awesome and cool he is.
+Gareth Lloyd As I've said to many male friends of mine: there is absolutely NOTHING homosexual about having a man-crush on Josh Homme. His cool transcends gender.
Daves music well.. if you wanna be gay about it.
You're not on your own here.😊
Yea Josh you already did your thing and I am in love with it
No, he's just saying that Hendrix comprehensively owns the stratocaster when it comes to fuzzy rock n roll. And he' right.

Hell yeah Josh is wearing his Eagles of Death Metal shirt :D
Going to see them soon!
Did you see them yet? Are you alive, my friend?
Darling Phenylethylamine I saw them on 2nd of November. They were great, disgusting what happened in Paris, though.
Glad to hear it, man. It looks like the line-up now is quite tight - would you say so? Wow, what an interesting view Josh has on guitars.
Aside from every other awesome thing in this interview... Can we take a sec to appreciate that colour grading? Might be the best I've ever seen!
Josh is my personal guitar hero... Thx for this!
Killer interview. Each part. Homme is a guitar god. Just like TD

Josh Homme is going to play a horror slasher in my screenplay

Josh had his Ovation Ultra GP's that could have been his signature instrument, but he up and sold them one day after using them for 13 years.
hey when will you do this show again, pretty cool
What a great show!! congtas!!
also fucking loved what Josh was saying, he's so right!

Oh Josh... you DID have a Marshall, and also a Les Paul... the Marshall played a big part in your early Kyuss sound as well...
You guys should do a lesson for tenacious d's karate
Brilliant!
00:03 Yeah Josh, little did you know that you would do that mostly throughout 2020/2021

Yeah Joshua, sure, only the Ampeg...
