People are awfully critical, a little kindness goes a long way, not to mention gratitude for the time invested in a FREE tutorial. Maybe if they went to an art school and paid they'd feel more of a need to say THANK YOU! Thank you, this is an amazing tutorial, you're talent is to be desired, but your patience is also admirable.
You came to my school once, and I bought an Akio book. Then I met you at our local library author fair, and I bought Brody's ghost book from you. Now I was looking up how to draw an eye, and pop there you were. It's a small world. Anyway, thanks for the help w/ the eye, and keep up the great books and art!
I want to thank you! I used your tutorial about 12 years ago while going through an intensely difficult time of my life! Coming back to drawing brought me back from the brink. I could totally put aside the stress while working on a piece, especially one this intense. I learned so much about shading and blending! I can’t see a way to upload a photo to this comment, would love to share what you taught me. It was on my fridge for many years, with me for 2 transatlantic moves, and is now framed and on the wall. Thank you, most sincerely.
thanks for taking your time and not time lapsing everything like some RUclips videos! i did a decent job the eyelashes used to be difficult until now thanks mark!
markcrilley I am trying to figure out how you shade so dark without going in to the inner eye also you really at dray the lines in the midddle to were they flow correctly I keep making them to jagged
+markcrilley thanks so much you inspired me to keep trying and I love to draw I am going to start posting vids on my chanell soon and I it would make my day if you could subscribe to my chanell, thanks again for the vids you're so great at drawing and I hope i fall into you're footsteps
I jusy want you to know, I would watch an hour of drawing lol. I feel the time spent is seen in the final drawing. I loved your tutorial and the way you handled the time elapse. I will be watching more and sharing this in my art class. :) Peace Out!
markcrilley hello mark, I have been so inspired by your work and have been watching your videos non stop for the last 4 days, my birthday is tomorrow and If you look at my photo I have a photograph of my eye, and it would be so amazing for me to have you do a drawing of it for me, I will be 19 tomorrow :). please respond.. even if you couldn't do it by tomorrow I would love it just as much whenever you have some free time... :) write back soon?..........
Mark, i started watching your videos about 6 years ago and you are my rolemodel when it comes to drawing realistic stuff! I often watch your videos without the intention of follow the turorial, just because your voice is so relaxing. I gave up drawing a few years ago and you inspired me to start again and I have no idea how I survived without it! Thank you so much! Greetings from Germany :)
This is super helpful, thank you! I think one benefit of drawing from life is learning the foundations of shading, attention to detail, and even mood of the piece. These exercises teach technique which I think is the backbone to feeling confident creatively.
Hey Crilley :) Just thought i'd finally get around to showing my appreciation for what you are doing. Truth is I have "just" picked up illustrating and drawing because I was overcome by the urge to depict a story I had made up. I had to search for a LOT of reference material and basically studied every single Manga/Comic related post on Deviantart and other sites, only to end up here and thinking to myself " Well that could have saved you a lot of time". Your voice always helps to immerse myself in drawing and your instructions are everything a beginner needs. I hope I actually get to finish a satsifying one-shot, and if I do I'm gonna send it to you. Whether or not you actually look at it or ignore it doesn't matter, I just figured since you were kind of a virtual Sensei for me you deserve to get a glimpse at what my shaking incompetent hands ended up creating with your guidance :) Keep up the good work, you are awesome !
Sir Mark Crilley, i have no words to describe what you've done. HE draws amazingly, he makes comics, he writes amazing story, and he posts drawing tutorials on youtube. In my life, i am 100% sure that no one will ever reach the level of the endless services he's done to the youtuber artists, being an author and being able to spare so much time out of his busy schedule. And this video....speechless....10 out of 10, AMAZING!!!!! Mark Crilley, your fan
Mark, You really need an HD cam. I love your videos but I can't truly grasp the little details that makes a drawing great due to the blocky quality of these videos
I have seen several videos on photo realistic drawing tutorial and this is the first one I am commenting on. This is how a tutorial should be. Both a combination of real time and time lapse combine together without boring the audience. Thanks for taking us though step by step. 2 thumbs up.
I draw eyes really well but I always get stuck at trying to draw the head shape around it, and somewhat the nose (I'm getting better at that though. It looks disturbing unrealistic and contrasting to the realistic look of the eye. Anybody have any videos or tips? Thanks
Learn how to draw the rest at the same level as your eyes, if you have to tone down on the eye detail so be it. ( less work too :D) otherwise keep practicing. If you can do the eye really well you can do the rest, at least that's how I see it :)
If you're trying to draw the head around the eye that you've already laid out, you may want to try the opposite. Lay out the shape of the head and mark off where the placement of everything should go within that structure. Figure out the angle that the head is tilted, the direction the eyes are looking, where the nose is pointing. Find the shapes and values instead of concentrating on one subject matter first and then filling in the space around it. Look up more tutorials are "planar" portraits.
Hey guy. Here's a nifty trick I learned. -- Top of ears are always level with the eyes. There's one eye distance between the eyes and 1 between the eyes and ears. The bottom of the nose is in the exact middle of the chin and eyes. and the mouth is the exact middle of the bottom of the nose and the chin. ;) see if that helps.
This is amazing!!! Thank you for doing free tutorials, this is really inspiring and informative. I love art and I used this tutorial in a piece of work that was assessed; it looked great, so thank you :)
You're amazing...I started painting just a few weeks ago...just kind of like an outlet or something..but it got me frustrated because I can't paint the subjects as accurately as I wanted them to be...which led me photorealistic videos...and stumbled upon yours...but your words "you have turned yourself into a photocopy machine" struck me real hard...and while i will never be able to draw or paint as realistic as you or any artists out there...I know now I only need to paint pictures from inside my head...that way all of my paintings will be accurate...and all of them will be me. Thank you.
I've never had a teacher that explained to me technique and a way of understanding things the way they are like Mark does, thank you for being my teacher Mark. You have helped me in understanding my mistakes and how to do better in my art.
Copying real life is art, a artist. That's how the great artists draw by looking at life. I would rather be able to do this then draw silly none realistic stuff from my mind (that i drew over and over before). Specially now days everyone loves realism and it is making art better. One word to explain haters, jealous. Nice video !
Most people aren't like you .Thank you for this video! I love how you put so much time and detail into it and explain it were i get it, it is so well made a unique and that last one you did didn't look like photo realism as you said in the video.and how you put another hour into it and made it even more beautiful. One suggestion thought, I would love it if you put just a little vanes in the eye but not like "Oh My God I She or He Is Doing Drugs" but i would love it though. Many people like your videos and subscribe to you channel, witch i did "your welcome". I wish i were like you with your techniques and how you take it from actual pictures of actual people. but thank you again for the video, im aiming for you do get 6 million views. :D
I drew with you (not with a pencil but a pen) and your tips actually helped me through, if I had done that by my own then it would have taken .. idk maybe FOREVER! This greatly helped me to get an idea about sketching. No wonder you have so many subscribers
I know (for myself) why it could be helpful, as an answer to your question "why do you want to draw as realistic as real life because a copy machine can do that": Because what a copy machine can't do, is take images from your brain and put them on paper. I mean sure: you can search for images that have a resemblance to what you want to draw, but there are images in my head with people and buildings and places and I want them to be as realistic on paper as in my head. I want those ideas captured on paper, because your brain doesn't have a save-function. That's why I watch your videos of realistic drawings.
I was able to recreate this! it looks kind of like yours but of course yours is better. I am thankful and cannot wait to hand it in as an assignment at school! you're artwork tutorials have challenged me to continue to do more! thanks again Mark!
This is one of the best and most helpful videos I have ever watched on how to draw a photo realistic drawing, I have watched many videos on how to draw and other drawing techniques and this is as I previously stated this is the most helpful and useful videos I have seen, thank you so much for recording this!
Mark, thank you so much for sharing these tutorials with us. After watching a few of them over the weekend, my drawing have improved significantly. More importantly, it has helped stimulate my interest to pick up a pencil and give it another go after many years of thinking it's too hard. I'm really enjoying having you as my daily art teacher 😊, I think you share great tips and explain concepts well. Thank you!
I am more so a painter, I know i am horrible with detail and have more of abstract paintings due to this. So these lessons are really helping, Patience is something i really need. Although examining my eye is tricky, I have extra iris, pigment that goes outside my iris, it looks like it leaks into the eye almost like a crescent you would see from a moon... Love your videos i will be a much better painter now and learn patience!!!
That one is great, by the way I wasn't saying this was bad, I was just trying to point out that in such a low resolution a bad drawing looks better. I can clearly see you have got better from 2010 to 2013, or is it because this was done in a few minutes?
My son just caught me watching this video and while I don't do portraits; as a rule I think it's important to explore all types of drawing and painting. Anyhow he said that the human eye was the first thing that was taught in his art class when he was in HS and next came the hands. I've fooled around with it a little bit and enjoyed this very, very much. Thank you, Mark. I like your teaching style and you have a very listenable voice as well, unlike some who speak at breakneck speed and it is just too intense for me. :)
You inspired me to give it a try. I did it digitally in Photoshop CS6 using my Surface Pro 2 tablet. It was challenging using a digital pencil brush since you cannot tilt it to shade like you did in the video. I am very much a newbie at digital art but I was very happy with the result. Thank you for the inspiration and in encouraging the patience it takes to produce photorealistic drawings. I've learned so much in just spending the time on this one drawing. Thanks again.
Even in 240p this is wonderful! Thank you for uploading this when you didn't have to take the time out of your day to spread your knowledge! I've watched this video since I was 14/15. You're the best!
Thank you! This really helped me a lot! I live in Britain and I have been interested in manga since my best guy friend started drawing it, so I brought Mastering Manga! That seems like a long time ago! Now I can draw manga a lot better than my friend and purchased Mastering Manga 2, both have helped me so much and I own so many pencils and pens its not even funny! Out of all the pencils I have, theres one that I like the most and I hold it strangely!! Thank you for showing me a new art and making me enjoy it! I recommend you to all my friends and am happy with my results everytime I watch one of your videos or tutorials!! I now own all of your how-to books and thank you so much! You are my inspiration and thank you so much!!!! You have an incredible talent with a pencil, and I'm glad you used it!!
Have to say thanks for the videos, I have tried to find several videos that help you with drawing. You are one of the few people that actually help, everyone else just draws a complex drawing in time laps and in the end i'm almost always worse of than when i started, so thanks
Very nice video. This has been real helpful for me. I'm glad you mentioned the type of pencil because I would have thought you would have ended multiple leads. Your technique is exactly what I strive for. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Mark, I can't begin to tell you how much I've enjoyed your videos and you and your personality. After watching an interview of you, I liked you even more. I'm new to watching RUclips and just started drawing after binge watching your videos. With your help I was able to actually draw! I'm excited because I thought I had no talent whatsoever. I realize that you have to time lapse a lot of the video, but was wondering if maybe on just a portion of drawing the eyelashes and eyebrows you would do it in real time. Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put in to these videos. You are so talented and just a pleasure to watch.
Hi, I wanted to show you my very first realistic drawing ( I am a complete noob and never have drawn anything before) that I did off of your tutorial. Im pretty new to youtube and can't seem to figure out how to show you the image. Thank you so much for this, I'm off to try your other tutorials now!
I like the way you hold your pencil. I also hold my pencil strangely, but it wasn't a result of an accident. I tried learning how to hold my pencil the 'correct' way, but it never felt right to me. It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one who has a strange way of holding a pencil.
WOW this is an amazing drawing - I need to be able to draw an eye as I am starting my GCSE coursework on portraiture! I always struggle on the iris but I guess practise makes perfect
Awesome your drawings are magic. Before I only did oval shaped eye with circle in the middle which was crappie ...but now you taught me how to draw a proper eye now. Thank you mark crilley
Arguments for photorealistic drawing is the "ooh amazing" factor. Rather than it simply being a copier, it takes skill and lobs of patience to pull off. And as the video mentioned, you do learn the details, which is helpful in building skills in drawing life.
I'm a Banker but art is my passion in an early age since I've seen your video I was inspired to pick up again my pencil if ever I have spare time trying to catch up the time. your video really helps a lot..Hope you all the best and thanks for sharing
I don't know about anyone else but this video was SOOOO helpful!!!! I took a few liberties on my own but for the most part I imitated what you did and the eyes on my portrait are beautiful...even more beautiful than my own. Thank you and you should definitely keep making videos.
I want to say, the point of hyper-realistic drawings is to teach us all how to draw better. :) Thanks for taking the time to pass onto your art and sharing your passion. I'm very curious to know what you do, in terms of art, when not teaching hyper-realism. You have a great voice to teach too, btw. Thanks.
I for one would have enjoyed seeing the drawing in real time... I just discovered your channel today and plan on seeing much more. Love your style and your voice is relaxing, I could watch you all day. Thanks so much for this lesson.
+Patcrochets Thank you! Have you tried my "no time lapse" series? Four videos, not a single second of time lapse: ruclips.net/video/Oq3eS43BcPs/видео.html
Omg this is totally amazing. This helped SO much! I basically drew this eye with you, and I REALLY like how it came out. Thanks a lot for showing this, best photorealistic eye vid yet!
rk Mark! I feel you will agree here, when drawing from a reference and the eyes are looking straight you, make sure you have the pupils exactly in the middle otherwise they'll look off focus.
I love your drawing very much: they are fabulous and it is great that you share your technique with us but I think it would have been very useful you show really the whole process because some parts were difficult to do with the drawing time lapse. I don't think it would bother anyone to see you drawing in real time because it is fascinating and I like to hear you speaking and explaining all the little details. I hope you will share more!
The plain old #2 you say he is using is by company called ticonderoga, which is considered the best pencil for use in college for the reason that the graphite is of a higher quality, and the eraser is in quality with that of a Pink Pearl eraser. Also your plain old #2 in this video happens to be a HB 2 and that mean it's a Hard soft pencil and the 2 is leaning towards the soft side. softer (B) means darker Hard (H) means lighter. the use of different pencils gives different results.
I have a talent to draw and I always strive for photo realism, but usually what I get is realistic but still somewhat cartoonish; so, thank you so much; all of your techniques helped me a lot!
Oh my god this is absolutely amazing I cannot fathom how you do this I've been drawing for a while and want to be a realistic drawer and this is just what I aspire to do one day.
Thanks for your videos. I started to learn pencil drawing by watching your "how to draw the mouth and lips" and find out pencil drawing is very interesting.
Mark, your talent is incredible, and you deserve so many more views and subscribers than you have. But if I may make a request? Not a suggestion, but a request - I would request that, if you ever decide to make another photorealistic tutorial such as this one, I wouldn't mind sitting through an hour or even two hours of watching you draw and fine tune. I wouldn't mind watching it all the way through without the time-lapse. I know many people, even you, may disagree, but it's just my personal preference. And it's just something I'm requesting you keep in mind, if you ever decide to do something of this category again. Subscribed to you and I admire the work greatly.
Awesome tutorial. And what a relief so hear you say: at some point: So what, I'm turning myself into a photo copy machine. Made me laugh out loud and helps me make my mind shut up and just be satisfied about my drawing. Thankyou very very much for everything that you share with us.
Thank you SO MUCH! So hard to find a really helpful description of technique! A lot of tutorials look like show off and nearly puts you off while yours are very inspiring! Thanks!!!
I started out watching your channel with your smile chili characters and Mangas but now that I look at some more complex ones, you are really amazing. Keep up the great work.
Hai. I watch a lot of your vids and I find this absolutely amazing!!! I love drawing eyes (as realistic as I can make them) and people tell me im good but I want to get better. can u do a real time on eyelashes please?
terrific step by step tutorial! It took me 2 - 3 hours, but I just drew a fantastic realistic eye! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! I started sketching decades ago as a young girl - this was my first 'real lesson' and what a difference - now there is this huge eye on my refrigerator door ha ha

Rachie Joe Thank you Rachie, you're very kind. :)
I would go out into the street when all the neighbours were out and seriously take a bow if I drew this.
I'm kind too ur my only teacher to learn how to draw animals, faces and more
I like how you speak, and I like how careful your lines are.
+moonblink Thank you!

+WeAreTheInsurgents i agree

i was impressed with the first line you drew lol
Same here! I am a terrible artist but I love seeing all the different designs that ppl do. At the moment I'm watching these vids and 'Art ala carte'
I jusy want you to know, I would watch an hour of drawing lol. I feel the time spent is seen in the final drawing. I loved your tutorial and the way you handled the time elapse. I will be watching more and sharing this in my art class. :) Peace Out!
"I don't spend a lot of time sitting around doing photorealism drawings" -a couple of years later publishes a book on photorealism challenges.
I was given the chance to do such I book, so I said Yes. :)
Dude this is a six year old video and you still respond, your awesome! +1 sub!
dude, your profile picture is freaking me out! i thought it wasnt loading or something
Part of being an artist, is the ability to evolve into other things. I think it's great that he began to take it more seriously.
Oh my gosh thank you so much! I just drew a realistic eye! OMG! I'm so proud of myself and I just want to thank you for this awesome video!!! :D
You're very welcome Chloe!
markcrilley Fan girling a bit because Mark Crilley just responded to my comment!!!!!! :D

Why are eyelashes so difficult?
because it's hard to draw random things. eyelashes go in all different directions, but it's just hard to draw things that look truly random
irk, i put like 30 minutes in drawing the lashes, but finish the actual eye in half that time XD
It's not. It's easy. Just have confidence!
You shouldn't be finishing an eye that quickly. I'd say no less than 10 hours if you're just drawing an eye.If you want a really good drawing.
Maybe because you hesitate? I think it's like lineart - never hesitate, or else the shakiness of your confidence literally shows.
Sir Mark Crilley, i have no words to describe what you've done. HE draws amazingly, he makes comics, he writes amazing story, and he posts drawing tutorials on youtube. This video is from 2010.Back then nearly everyone had potato camera quality.
Today of course, he has a way better camera.
Hey Mark, your work on HD would be so much appreciated!
Are you serious dude? Come on!
please go look at the videos that are NOT from 2010 .-.
If you feel that strongly about it, get him one for christmas.
I honestly wouldn't mind listening and looking at an hour long video I would seriously study the hell out of that vid

Well! the thumbnail looked so realistic I thought you were poking the poor person in the eye with a pencil! :)

Will you ever remake this tutorial in higher quality?
240p is a very excellent and wise choice of resolution. Not as great as 144, but still great.
+richardcheesesmoker It wasn't a choice: In 2010 it was the best my camera could produce.
+markcrilley By 2012, things had improved a bit: ruclips.net/video/WhAQUcLj-Ts/видео.html

I'm watching lots of your videos on my birthday !!!
Thank you ^^
5 years late lol but thank you for doing this video it really helped me :)) i did the drawing step by step and i drew the eye :) thanks
I drew with you (not with a pencil but a pen) and your tips actually helped me through, if I had done that by my own then it would have taken .. idk maybe FOREVER! This greatly helped me to get an idea about sketching. No wonder you have so many subscribers
Your my inspiration I'm 9'and I got a sketch book and want to be like you your awsome
Thanks Danielle!

You do NOT talk to much in your video. I enjoyed all your commentary and explanations--best eye I have ever drawn. Thanks!
I got one word: ThisIsAwesome.com...Okay, I admit it. That was 4 words.. 5 if you include the period. Mark do NOT give up you draw so perfect =3
Molly SilverFox Thanks Molly!
Look at your drawing then look at mine and I start to cry
same here! beautiful drawing sir!
I think what a copy machine cannot add is the emotions. We draw it with our soul and emotions which makes it valuable, significant, and joyful too.
@@haidi707
It also cannot add imagination - which is based off of and hugely involves reality.
I was able to recreate this! it looks kind of like yours but of course yours is better. I am thankful and cannot wait to hand it in as an assignment at school! you're artwork tutorials have challenged me to continue to do more! thanks again Mark!
That's great, i'll give you 5 star.... hold on... where are the stars? D=
You haven't come here for a long time I assume :)

This is one of the best and most helpful videos I have ever watched on how to draw a photo realistic drawing, I have watched many videos on how to draw and other drawing techniques and this is as I previously stated this is the most helpful and useful videos I have seen, thank you so much for recording this!
I know this is old and you probably figured it out by now, but come on..drawing videos with 240p max quality?
Alex Shady "this is old and you probably figured it out by now" --You have written my response for me. 240p vids were pretty common in April 2010. :)
markcrilley I see, glad u answered :)
Alex Shady
Well, that eye is realistic 😃👍
would it be possible to get the video without the time laps. i dont care if it takes an hour, l like to draw and l like to watch people draw.
Thank you!
This is wonderful
you are... AWESOME! :D
Don't do so many time lapse things haha if it takes an hour, I'll watch for an hour
This helped me a lot, thanks!
Anyone can draw realistically in 240p.
Lieutenant Capellini It's a pretty old video. Try this one from 2013, it's 720p: ruclips.net/video/lIBfYW-jRxU/видео.html
markcrilley hey thanks for replying to my comment, lol.
That one is great, by the way I wasn't saying this was bad, I was just trying to point out that in such a low resolution a bad drawing looks better. I can clearly see you have got better from 2010 to 2013, or is it because this was done in a few minutes?
The video's quality is garbage we can agree on that but it still looks cool
lol
I can't see anything. Get a better camera
You're commenting on a video from 2010.
markcrilley haha

+Greg Biggs Thank you Greg!
Your work needs to be put in museums, you're the most skilled artist I've seen!
+arizona girl Thank you so much!
DaveTheRave You're very welcome :)
Oh my good GOD man.... WOW. That last rendition of the eye was just spectacular. Holy cow.
OH!!! I am so happy. I just drew my first realistic eye from your tutorial and it turned out incredible!! Thank you!
Loved the video I agree with what you say about going as far as you did ..thanks for simplifying look forward yo seeing more videos
Dixon Ticonderoga is my favorite basic No. 2 pencil. The have good lead, sharpen well and don't have crappy erasers.
I love this video! Every few years I try and redraw this eye to see how much my art skills have improved. Thanks for a great tutorial :)
Amazing way of looking at things, A great teaching tool. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks!!!
nice teach, fun that u make the eyelashes so early should try that too..
I started out watching your channel with your smile chili characters and Mangas but now that I look at some more complex ones, you are really amazing. Keep up the great work.
+Rushil Parikh Thank you!
