The members of Led Zeppelin were all state of the art players and could do a lot of things that other bands couldn't. In Black Dog they are purposely combining different time signatures between drums and guitar; it creates tension, then explodes when they meet in the chorus. Structually (and lyrically) this is classic blues, which was foundation of many of Zep's best tracks (before they took it to the next level). As others noted, it's not a simple composition; you need to listen to it a few times, but eventually you'll realize it as one of the classic rock songs of all time. Jimmy Page's solo at the end is fire.
It was named after a black dog that was hanging around the entrance to the studio. You can't really get the groove, because I believe the guitar riff is in 5/4 time, but the drums are in 4/4, that means the beats sync every twenty notes
There is also a time change in the middle of the riff. It is easy to play wrong. A little difficult the correct way. With a drummer that gets it right the song works. An average drummer, forget it. And then of course good luck finding a singer.

You can basically just start from their first album and go from there. So many great songs. A few of my favorites - kashmir - dazed & confused. - over the hills and far away - trampled underfoot - communication breakdown

Omg, I had the same comment. And the time signature is off between the guitar and percussion intentionally! The idea is to grab you to engage your mind and think about what you’re hearing! One of the very best Zep songs.
Zeppelin sometimes had 2 different time signatures in the same song. Sometimes the whole band was in 1 signature and switched up during the song, sometimes the rhythm section was in one time signature while the guitar and vocals were in another.
Black Dog is just one of the many types of songs LZ does. It's fun to watch them perform it in concert, but it's not a sit down and listen song especially when your not that familiar with their music. They are known for their unique song construction, unexpected tempo changes, amazing guitar riffs, powerful drum rolls, and Robert Plant's vocals. Led Zeppelin are also great live performers, and since you have only reacted to their recordings, it would be nice to watch your reactions to an actual live song. As they never play their songs the same way when they play live, it is important to find the right performance. I think you would really enjoy their song Kashmir live at Knebworth 1979 official video. This has all the elements I mentioned and everything you said was missing. It is an epic performance where you can see and hear how good this band is. A second choice in my opinion would be Since I've Been Loving You live at MSG 1973 official video or Stairway to Heaven from the same concert. Lastly I would like to mention that Jimmy Page the guitarist was a highly sought after studio musician prior to starting Led Zeppelin, and he played guitar and harmonica on some of Tom Jones early songs.

In folklore some black dogs are considered to be evil in nature (which I think is bs). Like the black lab that lived next door to David Berkowitz (the Son of Sam) and he said the dog supposedly talked to him and told him to kill people. If you look inside of Led Zeppelin's 4th album with the song "Black Dog" on it and you open up the album and reflect the picture of the one half of the mountain of rocks up to a mirror and make it reflect to make a picture of a whole mountain you'll see what looks like a demon dogs face on the rocks. You can actually see this on the internet for yourself. Zeppelin is notorious for using subliminal messaging and subliminal pictures on their albums like in the song stairway to heaven he sings: "She's buying a stairway to heaven" That is a subliminal message that you can buy your way to heaven but you cannot you have to repent.
Really a great reaction. It was great to hear someone break down the idea of sometimes needing to listen to something several times before you are super into something. Some things never completely jibe, but often being familiar makes something even better.
The radio was the biggest influence on everyone knowing music that wasn’t necessarily our type because we were all listening to the same stations. Zeppelin, Beach Boys and others were before my time in the early 80’s, but they were played frequently, so we knew them. The internet killed the shared musical experience with everyone silo’d into their own niche.
Kudos for spotting the difference between the guitar and drum time signiatures. When this came out it took me a while to figure it out. Rick Beato explains it best.

I disagree with this. Always listen to Zeppelin studio first. You get Page's quality engineering skills and masterful arrangement without the improvisation and experimentation to confuse first time listeners. Once you've heard the studio version then you can go to the live which is essentially messing around with the original idea. Their live stuff is legendary but only makes sense AFTRE listening to the studio version of their songs to digest the initial theme of the song.

First time I saw Song remains the same I was left wanting and not used to non studio versions,. in time I came to appreciate it for the greatness in it (but its far from perfect) and how it captures the time and how big they were then. I was four when this song came out,and one of my older sisters was a huge Zeppelin fan. I remember running and dancing round the living room to this when it came out in 71,and my sister played it over and over. It still sounds as good as then!
John Paul Jones wrote this song. No instrument is playing the same song. The members said that this was the hardest song to play live. And yes it is called Black Dog after a Labrador Retriever that hung around during the making of this masterpiece of an album
Black Dog is filled with oddball time signatures and was notoriously difficult to play, and so of course it's hard to move to in a traditional way. But they actually sell it really well, especially because they keep coming back to that straight-8 which suddenly feels so comforting and John Bonham is really making the bell on that ride cymbal ring to signal how solid and relatable that straight section is and that's your chance to traditionally rock out for a little bit. But if you relax and take in the overall feel of it, this song is actually a great rock dance song all the way through. People my age have all danced to it, but I have seen some really sexy dancing to this thing, oh my. And I noticed that Ms B&B really lit up in those straight 8 sections. I agree with her also that I really love his voice in this, and the provocative lyrics of course. And also, great point about how different it is on a first listen.

At the beginning of my first high school music class, the teacher put on this song. The speakers were massive and the beginning with the weird strumming cut through the air. Everybody likes the teacher from that moment on and listened to whatever he wanted us to hear.
Grew up with this. Good take on the groove being erratic. This is Rock Ouy Music. We were partying to this up on a mountain at night in our 4WD Trucks where no one else can hear and crank that shit.
Everyone was going crazy when LZ performed this to a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden, 1973. I should know because I was there - I sort of remember the tickets being $10 - it was 3+ hour concert...just imagine that! Do yourselves a HUGE favor and listen to them LIVE - the MSG, 1973 concert is a great way to start...the way they adapt their songs to the stage is AMAZING!! Have fun!

Black Dog packs a wallop like a Sledgehammer. Its the first track on their iconic Untitled album (IV), and with Rock and Roll the 2nd track, it was a one two punch in the gut of heavy power rock when I bought this album in the mid 70s, and it is still.

Fool in the Rain, Rock n Roll and D'yer Mak'er are three of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Don't think you will be disappointed with any of those three. Studio versions.
When I was 8 or 9 in the late 70's this was the first hard rock song I heard. It was at a arcade I would go to and they played this alot on the juke box. I remember this with early arcade video games like asteroids, missile command, thief and football.
I respectfully disagree. I actually appreciate the music much more now that I'm (throat clear) older. You can't have the teenage nostalgia if you weren't there, but anyone can learn to appreciate any type of music at any age. I know these two are prob what, 40 or so. 😳 They'll catch on quick with the right songs to get em hooked. This is a complicated song to get used to.
In 1971-72 my buddy, Red, drove a 1968 GTO. We would drive the 28 miles from our hometown to a neighboring city to see a beautiful blonde, named Brenda Hansen. We could make the drive in 12 minutes grooving to Black Dog (do the math to see how fast that Goat ran the interstate)! Only got passed once, by a 12 cylinder Jag.
The very best thing about discovering the Greatest Rock Band of all time… Not one song sounds a like! To listen and appreciate Zeppelin’s genius…put the Album’s on and let it go.

That's zep very diverse. There catalog is huge. Not everyone will like every song like I do. But that's ok. Imo you should keep listening they will surprise you. Zep forever 😊
The reason you can’t catch the groove is because the drummer is playing in 4/4, but the guitar and bass are playing in 3/4, so that gives it a weird “hitch” at some points of the song. It was largely improvised in the studio, off the main guitar riff
Very good, you caught the fact that the drums and guitar are playing in two different time signatures. Which is insanely difficult to make sound right. They do it on other songs as well

I lived through the rock earlier years. I'm black went to an all white school only 14 blacks but I had a lot of white friends and we groove to led zeppelin. Jimmy page was one of the best guitar player ever. Music in the 70s was the best. Been to a lot of concerts black dog was one of there best check out grand funk railroad inside out. I believe you'll like it enjoy. The best time in my life
this defined "head banging" rock and roll when I was about 16 or so; we LOVED it in the early 1970s!! remember, most all early British rockers were HEAVILY influenced by Black American Blues singers which is where the line "I don't know but I been told, big leg woman ain't got no soul" came from. Yes, it was a concert song; it was not for "ballad" listening. Robert Plant is one of the top 5 "screamers" of all time!!

I get it, but Jimmy and JPJ were seasoned, session musicians whereas Robert & John were of course not.! To get the TRUE VIBE it has to be experienced *LIVE* point blank simple...... I won't blather on as I'm sure your a seasoned Zep fan but we can exchange stories if you ever want.... I spent a couple of hours with Perci, aka Robert in L.A. and what I said above is spawned from that bro..... anyway...... it's *Led Zeppelin* ..... we ALL win....

First time I saw Song remains the same I was left wanting and not used to non studio versions,. in time I came to appreciate it for the greatness in it (but its far from perfect) and how it captures the time and how big they were then. But I think more people are familiar with studio versions and I think thats the best way to begin appreciating LZ (or almost any band).
I was born in 1972 and we listened to everything, music was so much better then.
I was four when this song came out,and one of my older sisters was a huge Zeppelin fan.
I remember running and dancing round the living room to this when it came out in 71,and my sister played it over and over.
It still sounds as good as then!
John Paul Jones wrote this song. No instrument is playing the same song. The members said that this was the hardest song to play live. And yes it is called Black Dog after a Labrador Retriever that hung around during the making of this masterpiece of an album

Black Dog is filled with oddball time signatures and was notoriously difficult to play, and so of course it's hard to move to in a traditional way.
But they actually sell it really well, especially because they keep coming back to that straight-8 which suddenly feels so comforting and John Bonham is really making the bell on that ride cymbal ring to signal how solid and relatable that straight section is and that's your chance to traditionally rock out for a little bit.
But if you relax and take in the overall feel of it, this song is actually a great rock dance song all the way through. People my age have all danced to it, but I have seen some really sexy dancing to this thing, oh my.
And I noticed that Ms B&B really lit up in those straight 8 sections. I agree with her also that I really love his voice in this, and the provocative lyrics of course. And also, great point about how different it is on a first listen.

At the beginning of my first high school music class, the teacher put on this song. The speakers were massive and the beginning with the weird strumming cut through the air. Everybody likes the teacher from that moment on and listened to whatever he wanted us to hear.
Grew up with this. Good take on the groove being erratic. This is Rock Ouy Music. We were partying to this up on a mountain at night in our 4WD Trucks where no one else can hear and crank that shit.

Everyone was going crazy when LZ performed this to a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden, 1973. I should know because I was there - I sort of remember the tickets being $10 - it was 3+ hour concert...just imagine that! Do yourselves a HUGE favor and listen to them LIVE - the MSG, 1973 concert is a great way to start...the way they adapt their songs to the stage is AMAZING!! Have fun!

Black Dog packs a wallop like a Sledgehammer. Its the first track on their iconic Untitled album (IV), and with Rock and Roll the 2nd track, it was a one two punch in the gut of heavy power rock when I bought this album in the mid 70s, and it is still.

Fool in the Rain, Rock n Roll and D'yer Mak'er are three of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Don't think you will be disappointed with any of those three. Studio versions.
When I was 8 or 9 in the late 70's this was the first hard rock song I heard. It was at a arcade I would go to and they played this alot on the juke box. I remember this with early arcade video games like asteroids, missile command, thief and football.

I respectfully disagree. I actually appreciate the music much more now that I'm (throat clear) older. You can't have the teenage nostalgia if you weren't there, but anyone can learn to appreciate any type of music at any age. I know these two are prob what, 40 or so. 😳 They'll catch on quick with the right songs to get em hooked. This is a complicated song to get used to.

In 1971-72 my buddy, Red, drove a 1968 GTO. We would drive the 28 miles from our hometown to a neighboring city to see a beautiful blonde, named Brenda Hansen. We could make the drive in 12 minutes grooving to Black Dog (do the math to see how fast that Goat ran the interstate)! Only got passed once, by a 12 cylinder Jag.

So sad! My mom had music playing all the time, so I know music from before I was born. I did the same for my kids, and they are very well versed in all kinds of music! I've listened to their music as well. We still go off on it all!
That's zep very diverse. There catalog is huge. Not everyone will like every song like I do. But that's ok. Imo you should keep listening they will surprise you. Zep forever 😊
The reason you can’t catch the groove is because the drummer is playing in 4/4, but the guitar and bass are playing in 3/4, so that gives it a weird “hitch” at some points of the song. It was largely improvised in the studio, off the main guitar riff

I lived through the rock earlier years. I'm black went to an all white school only 14 blacks but I had a lot of white friends and we groove to led zeppelin. Jimmy page was one of the best guitar player ever. Music in the 70s was the best. Been to a lot of concerts black dog was one of there best check out grand funk railroad inside out. I believe you'll like it enjoy. The best time in my life
this defined "head banging" rock and roll when I was about 16 or so; we LOVED it in the early 1970s!! remember, most all early British rockers were HEAVILY influenced by Black American Blues singers which is where the line "I don't know but I been told, big leg woman ain't got no soul" came from. Yes, it was a concert song; it was not for "ballad" listening. Robert Plant is one of the top 5 "screamers" of all time!!
