Wow your Mother was cool. My Mother passed too she would have been 90 this year and... Hated Led Zeppelin. She said when she heard Led Zeppelin 1 they were never gonna last. We drove to Florida from N.Y. we made her listen to Led Zeppelin all the way there and back. Good memories we laughed about it for years. "Oops Mom they got another album out"..so funny! HaHaHa Condolences to your Mom.. I miss mine terribly...She loved Rod Stewart.

The timing is complicated. Bonham and Page are playing in different time signatures that meet on the 1 after twelve bars. That's the best I can explain it right now. Also, the 1 is difficult to find at the beginning...it just comes in awkwardly. Page and Jones were seasoned recording artists. Bonham and Plant weren't as experienced, however were definitely naturally talented. They were beyond professional.

The uninflated cost of the damage has been estimated to be between 246 million and 1 billion dollars." Loved your reaction on this. Interesting factoid: The time signature on this song is very difficult. That's why it's kind of a weird song to bop your head to, lol. Drums are in 4/4 & guitar and bass are in 5/4. They meet up every 20 beats. It's called a 5 over 4 and it's a subliminal component that really makes the song stand out.
Glad you're doing Zep as they are the GOATS! I would recommend hitting "When the Levee Breaks." Hugely popular & a personal fav. Cheers

I saw them in concert in '77. I loved the band but never thought they would become so iconic. I guess you never do when you are young. Watching the youth of today getting to experience what I did in the '70s is pretty awesome. Having a best friend who had an older brother really helped a lot. It's also pretty funny remembering my best friend's parents were potheads and we stole a lot of weed from them. They would never remember how much they had so that was good. I also remember when we went to concerts all you had to do is sit in the right spot and when you get it you just take your turn and pass it on.

The sort of pattern, the vocals followed by instrumental, etc. is definitely their way of doing the blues "call and response". Call and response was a fundamental part of African American music, developed in the fields when one would call out a line and then everyone else would repeat at once. It has influenced every form of American music that came to life after the civil war. Led Zeppelin and the rest of those guys in Britain at the time were huge blues fans. Imagine what blues typically sounded like. A guy singing a line, then playing guitar for a couple bars, then singing a line, then a couple bars of guitar, etc. That's where they learned the call and response.

Led Zeppelin, adopted their sound from the R&B/rock music they heard that was coming out of the American South before their time. That's why they sound so much like an American band, even though they are all English. And, in traditional Blues music a "big-legged woman" was a term often used to describe an attractive lady who was no good for you, b/c (as said in this song) she "spent my money, took my car. started tellin her friends she's gonna be a star." Anyway, it was a common trope in the music that they were heavily influenced by....though I can see how it would be misinterpreted.

Welcome to the Zeppelin rabbit hole. There is so much for you to watch and listen to.
On youtube...Type in exactly like this, "Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You Live (HD)" and the next song type in "Led Zeppelin - Kashmir (Live at Knebworth 1979) (Official Video)" The best band ever and forever.

That Gibson Les Paul is one of about 700 made in 1959. Jimmy Page owns two of the 700 and he played them throughout all of the Led Zepplin. They sell today for outrageous prices. The top price paid so far was above 2 million dollars. Someday Jimmy's 2 will be for sale and will fetch HIGH dollars.

    "Black Dog"....oh yeah, baby.
    1. The title of the song comes from a black dog that kept coming into the studio when they were recording the piece.
Dirty" is actually a very good word to describe it. Unusual time signatures in the song make it feel off balance but somehow it stays together and rocks.

That's my favorite Zepplin song - reminds me of basic training in '72 when we marched to the tunes "I don't know but I been told, in Vietnam it don't get cold..."

Very interesting take on the grungy/ underground vibe. They were not underground at all. They were a massive commercial success but it was based on their super slick studio albums.
Punk rock is kind of a middle finger response to Zeppelin just as much as rap was turning its back on disco.
But you are right about this live version…definitely feels grungy and raw

This song always reminds me of marching during basic training when we sang songs like "I wanna be an Airborne Ranger, I wanna live a life of danger..." Intelligent songs like that.... get's kids psyched up for war, until they get shot at, then the songs don't mean shit...

Young African Americans listen to a band of white Englishmen, influenced by the African American blues ... it's a full circle....circle of music!!
