I wish that I had discovered JP ten years ago, he is the one who got me interested in acoustic guitars. I was eleven (70 now) and the Beatles awakened me to the magic of Rock & Roll so my dad bought me an acoustic Spanish but I was yearning for an electric, I found a 330 six copy and the acoustics were lost in the quagmire of crap axes, but if only I knew of the magical tones of Maton, and Sigma and all the rest.
Thanks JP for sharing.... Being born in the 40's, I grew up as a smoker too. I always thought of it as the "John Wayne" era. I quit smoking many times, only to start again many times... I finally got free of tobacco in 2007. Hopefully to never smoke again. After listening to your testimony, I'm sending up "Prayers of Healing and Restoration" for You and Yours'... I grew up in a dysfunctional family too, as did many of us... God's Very Best to You Brother, jp
You're a great story teller J.P. Your life would make a stunner of a movie. ....And that fiddle medley nearly knocked me out of my rocking chair. My father LOVED this music. His father & grandfather played it, but he never learned because he was a lefty, & because his father forbade him to touch his fiddle. Sad, eh?
A truly amazing story....my God what a life you have been through.....and your family....God Bless You J.P. for sharing this segment of your life....we luv ya buddy....Kat & Don P.
It takes a lot of courage to tell this kind of story, and everytime you tell it, you heal a little more. Bless you and keep on sharing your wonderful gift of music. Nan--on our cousin's borrowed compie, while mine's in the shop!
My Dad was a great pianist ragtime was his specialty he played by ear and could hear a song once and bingo he'd play it but it was his ragtime version. Ever heard "Back in the USSR" a la ragtime? Being a teenage knucklehead I thought he wasn't cool now I know how brilliant he was. He could have been a pro but to him music was for your friends' and family and your personal enjoyment. He was dying from cancer and what really upset him was that he couldn't sit at his piano and play
Wow, an amazing story! Can't wait for chapter 2!!! and at the 20 minute mark One of the best fiddle medleys I have ever heard in my life! Holy, holy, holy Shit!!!!!
Very touching story. Not what I expected but I'm glad I heard it anyway. It's good for you, Canada and the rest of the world for that matter, that you turned to music. Thanks for sharing this. My uncle from Lake Ainslie worked for Ellis Don on the CN tower.
So many families with episodes of trauma and yet people can be so harsh in their judgements of others. On the other hand I guess the “grit” can shape a pearl. Great music JP , you are a gem yourself. Is this set on one of your albums?
Not an uncommon thing in those days in Cape Breton for grandparents to raise one child of a family or even an uncle and aunt to take one and raise as their own.
My Dad played piano he also smoked but only three or four a day for all of his life. Rothmans installed a cigarette machine in our laundry but after a couple of weeks they came and took it away because he only smoked a pack a week Looking back I think it's hilarious, they thought he'd start smoking more they didn't know my Dad.
Ok this is an incredible story....you are a great musician and have a morbid past. Im sorry all that stuff happened. PLEASE PUT A TRIGGER WARNING. Im a fan.
We luv when you play the guitar, JP, and we luv-luv when you play the fiddle. :)
