The way that you handle Gaio (and all your horses) is just so inspiring. The whole "punishment when you do something I don't want" thing has always rubbed me the wrong way, and that's obviously what he's used to. Lusitano bred for bullfighting are selected and trained to be high energy and aggressive so it’s no wonder he is like that. Which is a shame because Lusitanos are usually very intelligent and sensitive horses. Loved seeing Gaio having fun 🤩 Bullfighting is nothing more than glorified animal abuse and most people in Portugal - like me - are strongly against it. Cheers from Portugal 🇵🇹

I understand Jesse has a bond with Gaio, but he’s stated many times that Gaio’s owner is great & goes above & beyond for him. There are so many horses being mistreated in this world, so hoping a good owner is ripped from their horse, because you want someone else to have the horse instead is so bizarre.

I love the fact the Gaio's cure human simply wants him to just be a horse. If you want Gaio to simply have fun you have to rewire his brain that "working" can be fun not stressful. His head throwing is showing he's enjoying what he's doing. Even doing some of the "work" in his own paddock instead of in the area, lunging pen or round pen. My current owner, Reno (a paint gelding rescue) used to play like Gaio is when we were working and a few years on he knows the difference between work and play. Gaio has a wonderful personality and seems to enjoy simply being a horse.

I regret not doing that though, he went through at least three different owners before I bought him and definitely has mental as well as physical scars from that time. The breeder seems to be pretty responsible though, they have facebook and instagram where you can see how the horses spend their early years and it looks nice :) idk if you know kenzie dysli, but she owns the half brother of my horse and I think she is also very satisfied with him. @@Carroty_Peg Hello! I am from Spain and I have been riding iberian horses for decades now. I can't recommend you any breeder but if you want a balanced mind horse, buy an iberian from the north or the middle of Spain (Madrid, for example) and always visit the place before. Even though some cruel methods can be found all around Spain, it is easier to find these kind of staff in the south. I know that Las Cadenas in Madrid sell incredible horses, yet I can assure you that at least two of them are being treated with the famous "serreta". I went there on June since I was interested in a course to become a trainer. I will encourage you to visit as many breeder you can and also see the bridles they use. Furthermore, in Spain police and guardia civil usually ride Spanish Horses and they sell them from time to time, these opportunities are incredible since I have ridden ex police horses and no one of them was treated badly. Additionally, both lusitano and Spanish/andalusian are incredible not only because of their apparence, but their gentle nature. They are really comfortable horses and they have a lot to offer. You will not regrette it

I agree with your comment. One of the iberian mares I rode when I was younger was an exbullfigther. She was scared and traumatized. I remember we were trying to teach her show jumping and she repeated all the time the movement they do in the bullfighting arena. She also had her mouth cords cut and she couldn't neigh. She was such a beautiful mare [a polomino] with a broken soul.

When you said "check your morals" (in relation to bullfighting) I burst into laughter. TELL IT LIKE IT IS ... Thank you! An observation. You and Matt are so blessed to have found each other. The way you treat each other is rare in this world ... is spirit building and refreshing. I also hope, as you said, "he will be home." Never in my life have I seen such fantastic and beautiful "inner species" communication. May goodness shine upon you.

Jesse, I so appreciate your patience and understanding with Gaio. Just a suggestion ... I bought a Friesian Sport Horse who was traumatized and depressed after relocating from a home he had known all his life. He is very stoic, and after trying for a year to make him comfortable, I hired an energy worker. She worked on his body, and Mr. Stoic became a wet noodle. She helped him to release the trauma and wow, within 24-48 hours after processing the work, I had a new horse! He will never be a "pocket pony" but we are now best friends. I hope that someday Gaio will be yours. ♥

The feeling I get when watching him work with you is that he's trying reeeally hard to break out of old thought patterns and he gets frustrated and wants to do everything all at once in the hopes it pleases you. Gorgeous boy. He has such a fiery attitude but you can see it has been learnt.

There’s something very special about Jesse. The way he cares so much about the horses well being, & wants them to be genuinely happy is so refreshing. So many “horse people” focus on what the horses can do for them, but his priority is the horses comfort. Beautiful to watch.

    Hi Jesse!
I'm living in Spain and what you've told about him is absolutely right. They normally (and unfortunately) teach horses stuff like the spanish walk, piaffe etc. too fast, with negative reinforcement instead of positive reinforcement. Horses usually are scared of the whip, and here they see these methods as "the horse respecting you" when they're actually just scared. I've seen horses reacting the same way as Gaio when he bows down, and all the "reacting in a fast way" and "now knowing how to enjoy themselves".
The bridle you describe is a Pelham with Serreta, metal spikes that go on their noses to "control" or "stop" them more, and they leave permanent scars. In spanish riding, they usually ride with big spurs, assembling the western ones. That's were the scars come from, especially in bull fighting or "spanish dressage" spurs are heavily used here.
I'm absolutely disgusted by bull fighting and I don't like the Spanish riding (Doma vaquera) either. From the outside, for me it just looks like a lot of pulling in their mouth and a lot of using spurs.
Unfortunately like Gaio there's millions of horses, and thank god he's found the right home where he can start to learn what it is to be a horse and be happy again. I really hope he can enjoy himself very soon.
This sadly is the reality of many of those beautiful horses. Maybe Matt has seen some of those "spanish training techniques" as he went to Spain, but maybe he didn't because they hide it.
Anyways thank you for doing the work you do! Gaio is a beautiful horse and the owner chose right to leave him in your hands. xx

@Jesse, this is my first time watching one of your videos. I usually watch Matt, but was intrigued to see what you were doing with this former bull-fighting horse. I’m amazed at how great you are with him, helping him learn to relax & enjoy playing & discovering how it feels to be free of punishment & abuse. Love your deeply caring, compassionate, unselfish & undemanding ways with him, wanting him to be happy & free to be himself, expressing his own personality. I greatly enjoyed watching you two frolicking & being playful together. Thanks for sharing what you’re doing with him. I’m looking forward to seeing more videos of what you two are up to & watching his progress as he grows even more comfortable with feeling & expressing himself, knowing that he’s safe with you. Bravo, we’ll done putting him at ease & helping him to relax & have fun!! 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️

Wow - very similar to the palomino Lusitano I ride, originally from Brazil under professional riding. Beautiful, ADHD, sensitive, intense with other horses, hot/fiery, and can get tense trying to please under saddle. Also old marks on nose and chest too. Love how you explain Gaio's personality and how you work with him. I've found as well that being calm, no negative punishment (positive only), and keeping variety in the work with light contact, hand walking, etc. has excelled him and strengthened our relationship and trust with each other. :) Lustianos are a special breed and need very understanding people around them. They are becoming more popular in the US but not every person can or should handle them, due to their sensitivity that is different from most other horse breeds. Good job with Gaio!

Gaio is such a handsome boy. His early training to shape him into a bullfighting horse must have been quite hellish for him to be so high strung after years of more gentle work. I'm glad his owner has left you to do with him as you please, because you always train with the horse's interests and comfort as the main goal. You will be the best therapist for Gaio, to calm his mind and keep his body active.
