    Brijesh Patel was always a very good player. Some what he lacked confidence in the test level cricket. He was more suited for the shorter version of the game but played only 10 ODIs. Very unlucky. Brijesh Patel. King in Local cricket on India.

    Edgbaston compared to now (2021) looks a complete different stadium then with 19th century wooden stands and a different pavilion....only the scoreboard and clock has survived the test of time! How a stadium changes over time is amazing. Also, good to see the west indian support then which has drastically decayed over the years.

    Viswanath’s gem of an innings - though a little slow- is reminiscent of his immortal 97 at Chepauk in 1975. Then it was only Roberts, but now (1979) it was a pace battery with Holding, Croft and King firing. Vishy proved once again that he was the man in crisis. That was the highest score by an Indian in World Cup till Kapil’s 175 in 1983.

      Indian bowling was really weak. They depended mostly on spin but ball was sent out of the stadium by West Indies batsmen.

    That was the real cricket not like IPL where batsman can hit you anywhere on flat,dead batting paradise pitches. To face westindies pace attack itself was a great deal. I believe that nobody could have touched them. Missing that real cricket not just like commercial game of cricket in IPL or other leagues in which rules are batsman friendly.

    Problem in those days was India depended more on Spinner. Except Kapil Dev there was no Geniune Fast bowler in India. Madanlal was almost s Fast spin bowler. In 1983 India was a better team. But I would have included Brijesh Patel in the 16. Member team. It didn't happen. India won the World Cup. Brijesh Patel career was over by this time.

    It's very noticable how reluctant the Indian batsman were to get in line and in behind short pitched deliveries from the WIndies pace attack

    • @davifdavid4347
      @davifdavid4347 Год назад

      Yes,they still remembered the mauling they got from the W I attack in April 1976.Michael Holding was bowling so fast that 6 Indian batsman were hospitalised.Bishan Bedi,the captain of that team,did something never seen before in the history of test cricket by refusing to bat in both innings.He,and 3 other players still had the opportunity to try and push for a draw or win the game.Bedi chose to declare the innings closed twice instead of defending his country's honour.It was and still is,the worst case of cowardice recorded in cricket.I am still amazed that he was allowed in keep the captaincy after the conclusion of that series because as a leader, he clearly did not lead his men by example.With the exception of a few ,little Vishy and Gavaskar,in particular, the fear in these men is clear to see.

      Yes, india did not play any preparatory odi matches before the 1975 and 1979 matches. I also think that venkatraghavan was not the right captain for the team. He shouldn't have been reinstated after the failure of india to qualify for the semifinals in 1975. I think the reasons for the failures of the 1975 and 1979 teams are as follows : 1 lack of preparation 2 wrong captain 3 wrong team selection. We should have selected the entire spin quartet, and played all of them. I know this sounds counterintuitive, but if you google the results in the 1975 and 1979 world cup results, venkat and bedi had the best economy rates. Especially in 1975, india had the worst fast bowling line up among all test nations. On top off this, we conceded a lot of easy wickets among specialist batsmen. In this clip, gavaskar and gaekwad got out to unnecessary shots. I don't know what possessed them to play aerial shots against windies, at the start of an innings, when chasing is not necessary, on a green wicket, on an overcast day. In short, there's plenty of blame to go around, and everybody, by that I mean the bcci, the selectors, the captain, the specialist batsmen and the pacemen messed up. Sorry for the long rant.

    To my Indian brothers - you see,on quicker pitches,against genuine pace, Gavaskar wasn't anything special. He could only master the fast men on slow tracks, which any Test status batsman should be able to do.

    • @avijitsikdar2604
      @avijitsikdar2604 9 месяцев назад

      Oh really!!! Then look at his record in Australia and West Indies ( at that time the West Indian pitches were fast)....
      I wonder where did you get the idea that Gavaskar was only a flat track bully, I guess in your imagination only!!!

    • @davifdavid4347
      @davifdavid4347 9 месяцев назад

      @@avijitsikdar2604 You say that W I pitches were fast. Only two tracks aided the W I pacemen, Jamaica and Barbados. The other pitches used for Test Cricket and,in particular, Port of Spain, were as dead as the pitches in India,and it was the dead pitches that Gavaskar thrived on. He never scored even a single century against the W I on an even paced track or fast track anywhere in the world. By the way,it was Michael Holding who called him a flat track specialist. Gavaskar could only cut it against the pacemen of the W I on flat tracks and that's why he said it.

    The indian team performed poorly in the 1975 and 1979 cricket world cups. There were several reasons for this 1 the bcci didn't organise any practice odi matches before the 1975 and 1979 world cup matches 2 india's seam bowling attack was among the weakest and least economical of all test nations 3 in spite of gavaskar's request, india didn't select enough specialist spinners. The reason gavaskar asked for more specialist spinners to be selected is the fact that he feared that our seamers would be too uneconomical. He was proven right in both world cups 4 team managenent's decision to retain s venkatraghavan as captain gor the 1979 world cup, in spite of india's poor performance in the 1975 cricket world cup. 5 lack of world class batsmen. In the 1975 cricket world cup, india had, on paper, three world class batsmen : gavaskar, vishwanath and amarnath. Of these batsmen, amarnath performed poorly, because he was shuffled around the order too much, and, in 1975, had to get used to being in the indian team again after being in and out of the team for several years. In 1979, india had 4 world class batsmen : 1 gavaskar 2 vengsarkar 3 vishwanath 4 amarnath. By and large, these 4 batsmen were too inconsistent.
