Im watching cricket from many years ago..and as a meatpie ,5 schooners guy from wollongong.i just want to let all the India following the feed that I enjoy your comments and company.. fantastic bunch of people
Thommo was still fast in 1978 and would bowl a super human spell in Barbados later that year. However, this was after his awful shoulder injury. If you watch Thommo in 1974 against England he was RAPID!!!!! Speed of light.
In those days no live telecast ,no highlight to know current score I brought the transistor in my college bag and listening commentary in interval time those were wounderful days
Thanks for this video jai sir, it brought back memories of my childhood, I was in 5th standard, remember listening to the excellent AIR commentary by Ananth setalvad and sushil doshi...
I was in fifth grade. It was vacation time I belive. Sushil doshi and anand sethilvad were the Indian commentators,a fine team. So ashok Mankad was bit of a swashbuckler, but never made many international runs. Suspect this was his last year inning.
None of the Indian batters wore helmet against the lethal pace of Thomson, but played him fearlessly. May Kohli's boys watch this video capsule and turn gritty against the likes of Steyn.
Umm, not so sure re the fearlessly ;) Gavaskar certainly did, superb against the pace, but even Vishy and especially Mankad were not always behind the line and they did take a few wild swings...don't blame them TBH!
But ,my dear friend By 1978 Thommo has lost much of his pace and he was just a shadow of his former self. This is just my point of view. But Mohinder Amarnath ,Sunil gavaskar are great players of fast and swing bowling. They have proved it time and again in their own soil In west indies,Australia England And kirmani too But I do not think u can put others like DB.venksarkar or Ashok mankad in that list Venksarkar has proved that he is good against quality swing bowling in England That is beyond any arguments.
Thanks bro for uploading this video, try to get more of this series. Sunil Gavaskar and vishwanath played brilliantly and Dilip vengsarkar started to get success with this series. Hope to get more such nostalgically videos... thanks again
Thx.for live vedio of these old matches which we hv seen trough live Comentry that time, when our famous Spin triangular in Form,Bendi, prasanna and Chandra!!!
Superb nostalgia for all us cricket tragics but with due respect to that Australian team this is a stark reminder of how much of a second string outfit they were with the only world class player being Thommo, and as you can see from the very long run he changed to, even he was still getting back to his best after that shocking shoulder injury the previous summer. Really, only Cosier remained from the great team of the mid-70s the rest were long gone to WSC
Interesting statistics: Between January 1979 and January 1988 (a period of 9 years) there was only ONE score of 50+ by an Indian left handed batsman and that was made by Karsan Ghavri in November 1979 (86 vs Australia at Mumbai).
I was 11 years old. And can remember maiden hindi commentary by Sushil Doshi like tomson ki agli gend, backfoot par Gaye vishvnath aur cut Kiya gend Ko deep thirdman boundary ki taraf chaar run k liye and after series got over, his photo was flashed in Dharmyug magzine. In English Anant sitalwad was also remarkable.
Well said dear. I was 12 at that time. Can still remember the sensation of early morning commentary of these two. Sushil Dosi and Anant Sitalvad. Mesmerising running commentary.
@@manishkhetan5868 Thank you. You brought back memories of Sushil Doshi. He was such lively commentator that he could make a match going towards a draw at 2 runs per over sound exciting!
Thank you Jai. Waiting for this upload for long time.straight way transported in 1978. try to upload 1964 India Australia 3 test series played in India . Simpson was the captain in that series. Australia won first test in madras .India won in Bombay on vijaya dashami day the second .Third Calcutta test was drawn. all cricketing fans will be happy.
can be hard to get good video of Thommo, thanks for the upload, great work. Also liked the way Bishan declared the innings closed at only 8 down, not much use facing Thomson at that stage i suppose.
Listened to Anant Setalvad and Jasdev Singh giving commentry on AIR and watching Sports Roundup in the evenings for the previous day's highlights. At the end of the series D.K.Lilee,Jack Fingleton and Lindsay Hasset wrote that Vishwanath was the finest player of fast bowling who had come down under in the70's.

Another fine effort by you Jai! Yes...India's maiden test victory in Australia in this series! We did well in Australia in 1967. Who can forget the innings played by Jaisimha! In this test Madan Lal took a stunner to dismiss Peter Toohey very early on the last day.
Man this is fantastic footage. I've heard about this series and have been dying to see excerpts from this. Thank you so much for uploading. Do you have any footage of Gavaskar's centuries in this series? I believe he scored 3? Except for Thommo this was definitely the Aussie B team
Thommo himself was below par as he was coming back from a bad injury. But even the Aus B team wasn't bad. Gavaskar, by the way, never played either the 70's Windies pace quartet at its peak nor Lillee-Thomson together. When he did manage to face another Windies pace quartet in 82-83 in the Caribbean, he came a cropper. It was Mohinder Amarnath was the lone batsman who took them on, as he did against Imran in the earlier series. Imran finished Viswanath's career in that series.
I HAVE BEEN WATCHING tEST CRICKET SINCE 1961-62 ENGLAND TOUR OF INDIA SERIES. England team was led by Ted Dexter. and India by Nari Contractor. In this tour, the Indian team was gifted with introduction of new Caps like Nawab Of Pataudi. ( later Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. ) E A S Prasanna a top-class gifted Off-spinner. ( and I think Even Farooq Engineer also made his Debut). Pataudi scored his maiden century at (then) Madras test which India won. Now coming to our main topic. Kerry Packer though organized a series of a coup in cricketing history by introducing limited over cricket ( later to be named as ODI ) it later made an improvement to play T20 cricket. We must remember that Mr. Kerry Packer made a dashing dynamic decision to drag all top-class cricketers in his web he made a new version to Cricketing history. ODI's became very famous and all the cricketers started earning good money. It made them to devote full time for cricket as this talent was recognized and players were paid for their talent.. The gradually white ball replaced brown balls for ODI's and it became day and cricket came into existence. The dress code got an improvement over just white to many color dresses. Gradually limited over cricket was like an instant coffee improved. Results for each and every match was forthcoming. Many dashing players both in batting. fielding and bowling came into existence. See what a change has happened. and it will improve further and more money started pouring with the introduction of IPL and similar cricketing events. I feel Mr Kerry Packer must be honoured with the highest sports award for his contribution... Long live Kerry packer and his legacy. I am C R Ramabhadran an Indian
28:31 ,,,, Ghavri got a wicket ....lbw,, but aussie umpires ,, never gave lbw appeal against Aussies....... out of there 500 wins,,,,,, in test cricket 400 were freebies from UMpires.
Can someone in the know please tell me whether Bishan Bedi declared both innings closed without actually batting himself?I would be very interested to learn if this was the case, because he did this in the Caribbean 2 years earlier for fear of the West Indian attack. If Bedi did the same here, then,it proves my point that he didn't like fast bowling.
Couple of times in this series Thommo turned the game, but not this time. Viswanath going sideways across the crease to good length balls from Thomson. Tells you everything. He was not the great player of fast bowling he is made out to be in these comments. B grade Aussie team won 3-2. It was a fun series. I was there for the first day. Peter Toohey ran himself out. It might have made the difference. By this game Mann and Searjeant had completely lost confidence. The last test they changed the team a lot and won it.
Now that I see this, i have realized that other than Thomson, i have never heard of other Australian players. India have beaten a "B" Australian team. Specially after so many catches were dropped by the Australians. When Thomson bowled, Indian batters looked so scared its not even funny. Even Gavaskar couldn't wait to walk out after being hit on the arm and was not out but no complain or resistance by him as if he didn't wan't to face Thomson.
Very and inexperienced too. Lillee, Walker, Mallet, Pascoe and even the useful part timers in Greg Chappell and Dougie Walters, all playing with Packer's WSC. Hard guys to replace.
That's all he was playing before being recalled to captain the side. His last previous test had been in 1968 and he hadn't even played state level for years. He was a useful part timer/partnership breaker, 71 wickets in 62 tests at 42. Contrary to these highlights he had also been a brilliant slip fielder, I believe he may have even held the record for some time for most catches by a non keeper. Drastic measures for drastic times and all that, so me made a comeback to lead during the first year of Packer cricket v The Establishment.

Looks like the ball was a NO BALL which bowled Vengsarkar!

Thomson with the new ball is quite close to back foot no balling isn't he? (around 8 minutes onwards)
