  • Welcome to Waste Management of San Diego - the largest yard WM operates in Southern California. The history of this yard is very interesting, however, not much is known about their fleet prior to 2000. This fleet still seems relatively old school because of all the old trucks still running today. In 1999, WM partnered with PG&E to develop a pilot project to test out natural gas garbage trucks. WM ended up purchasing 120 LNG powered Macks, and today, many are still working hard picking up trash throughout San Diego County.
Being the huge Mack fan that I am, I've really taken a huge liking to this yard as the number of Macks across SoCal has decreased year after year. On September 14th, Moises and I made a trip down to the area to meet up with WM's awesome Phil Smith, who is a 46 year veteran of the company. He knows so much about the history of the waste industry and shared many interesting stories with us. I learned that WM worked under the name Universal Refuse & Removal, who occupied the current property where WM of San Diego currently sits at. He remembers when WM ran PODs out of El Cajon - something I didn't know about until recently! I also found out that Western Waste had a yard close by WM where half a dozen trucks were parked in a small lot for them to service the county.
In this video, you can see many of their older garbage trucks unloading at the transfer station. I also made sure to capture many of their chromed out trucks both new and old. The fleet pride in El Cajon is absolutely incredible. I don't think there is a Waste Management yard I've seen with more fully chromed out trucks than this yard. Below are some of my favorite trucks in the fleet:
(0:49) - 205593: This is the last truck in the El Cajon fleet that still sports the old "Breathe Easy" logo from back when these Wittkes were brand new.
(5:58) - 212976: This is one of my favorite trucks in the fleet despite being a new "Think Green, Think Clean" truck. The driver chromed it out really well and really makes it stand out in comparison to the other Peterbilts.
(6:50) - 408138: I never realized how awesome these trucks are until Tyler posted a clip of one a few months back. These LNG Mack roll offs SCREAM when the right driver is behind the wheel!
(8:25) - 263271: This is one of the nicest front loaders in the fleet. The previous driver chromed this truck out really nicely until he got a new truck. They still kept the truck looking really nice and you can see how clean the truck is today.
(14:33) - 263584: Here's a truck I didn't know El Cajon had until this day! Refurbished LE/Wittke driven by super cool driver Uzi Merino.
(14:46) - 200036: I believe this is the very first LNG Mack that El Cajon received. It's incredible how it still runs daily!
(15:40) - 211352: This is probably my favorite truck in El Cajon's fleet - a one-of-a-kind 2011 CNG Mack MRU Amrep HX-450 FL! Moises showed me that the body on this truck is actually from the 2009 LNG Mack MRU Amrep HX-450 FL that WM bought and displayed at Waste Expo! The drivers of this truck have taken really good care of it and today, it looks really nice and runs well. Thankful that it's been kept in great condition all these years!
(17:02) - 205530: By far El Cajon's most photogenic driver!
(17:54) - 101490: One of several Wittke Crocodiles that WM still operates down here. This is one of the meaner sounding ones they run too.
(19:20) - 206436: This Mack MR Wittke was repainted within the past year I believe and it looks amazing! Really cool to see El Cajon still repainting Macks these days.
(25:06) - 205828: I really enjoyed watching this truck in particular unload. Smooth sounding truck and the Curotto Can grippers on the truck is definitely unique! On top of that, the oil based paint job on the truck has kept it looking really good all these years.
At the end, starting at (27:16), are some old photos of WM of San Diego from the early 2000s. The ones from 27:16 - 27:40 are courtesy of John Tiquet, WM's natural gas fleet manager. John started out as a tech in El Cajon and rose up to become in charge of all of WM's natural gas fleet technology due to his extensive knowledge of the systems. He can even be seen in an interview in this video here: • Video
Thank you so much to everyone at Waste Management of San Diego, and a special thank you to Phil Smith and Dawn Carmen for taking the time to talk with us about the history of the local waste industry. Another thanks to John Tiquet for sharing his experience and some photos of the early LNG fleet with me! And finally, thanks to Moises for making this trip possible.
Hope you all enjoy & thanks for watching!

I have always had a lot of interest in waste managements San Diego yard, definitely one of the best vids I’ve seen in awhile! It’s so awesome that they don’t have to much of a problem with diesels! (Or so I don’t think they do) The Mack Le wittke fls with curotto cans are awesome trucks, it’s awesome that they have so many of them running to this day!
The Mack MR fls with the new “think green think clean “ logos really look good! As well as the exhaust pipe behind the forks instead of in between the cab and body. Reading the description I was shocked a Phil’s knowledge! Really smart guy! It’s cool you learned a thing or two from him.
Damn looks like 520 Amreps are popin up here too. Seems like all the yards in SoCal are getting them, can’t complain tho at least there not 320s. Those 32 gallon Otto edges for or organics look sick! It would be cool if someone got a video of them being tipped by a Mack MR fl! I also have to add it’s crazy how many of the fls have tippers, do all of the Front Loaders with tippers do carts or do they just have them on just cause?? I totally agree with you about macks slowly disappearing in SoCal, it’s a shame we need more over here! Doesn’t look like these are going anywhere for a while though so that’s good. I’m super happy there’s a few waste Management yards in socal with more...... interesting trucks! Way better than just the “usual” like most yards have! Well I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait what you bring us next!

El Cajon is one of the best yards around right now - glad I got to see their fleet while they're still running a good amount of oldies. Only a small handful of diesel trucks left that are used for special operations, the rest of the fleet is all natural gas. Yeah Phil is amazing, real knowledgeable and just super down to earth and friendly on top of that. I learned A LOT from him that day haha. There's only one 520 in Cajon right now as far as I saw but the crazy thing is that it doesn't even belong to them lol it's a Carlsbad truck so hopefully they don't keep it for long.
Thought you'd like those organics carts and definitely agree with you on seeing them be collected. I believe every FL has tippers on them unless they are part time residential trucks/were recently moved from residential to commercial. The downtown route has tons of carts and I assume other stops around their service area do too so they have them on all the trucks just so they aren't limited to certain areas.
Unfortunately El Cajon is probably the next fleet due for massive replacement due to increasing difficulty finding parts so I'm really going to try and enjoy their Macks as much as possible while they are still around. Appreciate the great comment!

Wow what a video WMmaster626! I'm glad to see there is another yard besides G.I. that has a ton of Macks. That MR with the Breathe Easy decal was awesome, I remember seeing those when they were fairly new. Glad to see you caught a good amount of dual axle trucks, those look neat with the taller body. Those Crocodiles alway look great, glad those are still around. The MR Amrep sure looked great, would be awesome if WM bought those! Nice catch finding the N3, glad the arm was not removed. Thank goodness you made it while there are still plenty of good trucks there, fun video to watch!

Neat video!! It reminds me so much of my work. Wonder if they find any goodies lol... Do they truck their GW off? I don't think I've ever seen a place keep it inside. I remember those Breath Easy signs back when I was in elementary! A few of our Wittke Macks had them. Is there a reason most of the FLs have the container attachment? Are there a lot of carts on the commercial routes? Excellent job! San Diego sure does have some nice trucks

    • @WMmaster626
      @WMmaster626  5 лет назад +1

Thanks Zachary! Haha yeah definitely see that! Green waste is taken to the transfer here at the end of the day since the landfill closes at 4 pm so many trucks aren't able to take their last load there. I had no idea until a few months ago that Fresno also had Breathe Easy trucks!! I have a really bad picture of one of Fresno's Mack LE Amreps with a Breathe Easy logo on it so that's cool that you remember them. I believe all the FLs have them since they do offer carts to commercial customers throughout San Diego, especially in downtown. Having tippers or grippers ensures that a commercial truck isn't limited to a certain area/route and could easily be moved around. Thanks again man!

Great, Great Video Aaron! Iv'e always enjoyed seeing MRU AMREPS. They look super slick in my opinion. Also enjoyed the amount of Cabover Roll Offs. Those aren't too common in my area, so its nice to see some! Keep up the great work man!

Thanks Will! Mack Amreps are definitely my favorite combo, especially on an MRU. Yeah I've always liked cabover roll offs in comparison to conventional too, just makes them more like a typical "garbage truck" haha. And Charlie Trash Truck was filmed up in Oakland, not El Cajon. Would've been cool to see them film it down here though! Appreciate the comment bro!

I agree 100% with the "Typical Garbage Truck" statement! Yeah, it would have been cool if Charlie Trash Truck was filmed in El Cajon. It hadn't crossed my mind until the pictures of the LNG Fueling came up and it reminded me of the fueling up scene. All the good garbage truck movies were filmed in Cali lol
