- A lot has changed at this yard since my last compilation a year ago.
Since then, the majority of the older trucks have been either scrapped or sent off to Whitmore Lake. Many newer Mack MRUs have been brought in from other yards, along with a handful of CNG Autocar FLs.
This also marks an unfortunate point in the yard, as Rizzo begins servicing Dearborn Heights on November 1st.
However, to compensate for the loss, Waste Management has closed the Whitmore Lake yard and has begun the process of moving all the trucks over. This will prevent any lay-offs from Dearborn Heights.
In this compilation, you'll get to see a bit of the Residential Launch, along with a brief overview of most of the trucks in the fleet.
I'd like to extend my thanks to all the managers: Kevin, Jason, Steve, and Keith, for allowing me to film these videos as well as just being great guys. They have an excellent operation, and have shaped this yard to be the best in the region and one of the best in the nation.
Furthermore, I can't go without giving credit to the drivers/loaders. Some of the coolest guys there are, and I hope to work alongside them after a few years.

So many years later and most of the old diesel are long gone replaced with CNG Rear loaders, Pete 520s and idk how many but an LR CNG rear load does my compost. This site runs pretty much Curottos now, I think Monroe still has a carry can and a RL out there I’m not sure, but Collin is on a Pete 520 on Monroe recycle
I can't believe in this day and age there are still trucks where the driver has to get out. I haven't seen a garbo get out of a truck in 25 years!
It's different over here in the States, especially in the areas where the majority of material is manually collected.
turbocat1984 remember more moving parts are nothing but more problems. If a self loading truck has a malfunction, it’s useless.
Also depending on the route, sometimes the cans or dumpsters have to be moved out to the truck by the driver.

My father worked for waste management in Baldwin park California yesterday 1/24/2020 was his last day of work he worked there for 32 years ... he just retired🙏

This is great to see. I have one more class, and I'll be doing the same thing. I'm nervous, and excited at the same time. The scary stuff that happens with them is a bit alarming. If some don't know what I'm talking about, look up the bad stuff that could possibly happen. You almost second guess your self, wondering if your choosing the right career, or not.
Welcome to the club. Best wishes to you, just know that you can never be too safe and always look twice. We have all seen the worst that can happen, but we have also seen many great things happen in the industry.

This job will keep you in shape for sure! I think i would wear a painters mask to not inhale all that toxic all day. WM should require them to wear mask, gloves, boots and perhaps even back-supports.
A mask sucks, if you have to wear it 10 hours a day. Usually there is no toxic air to breath (except the exhaust gases of the truck), but the dust of the garbage is bad for the lung.

You should not be required for any of what you mentioned. It should be up to the people who want to wear that. If they want to then fine but making the ones who do not want to would be bullcrap.
They work fast, and sometimes, pieces spill out, and wind up on the street, instead of the truck. It's a hard job. It would have been a treat, to see them get rid of each load. How the dumping goes.
Those Mack MRU Model trucks are still standing and working for the longest time The Peterbilt has a cab changes from 300 to 520 and the Xpeditor change manufacturers from White motors to Volvo to Autocar which is the current manufacturer that still built it and a little changes

I am an Indian working at India for WM IT Operations.
I started watching this video just to know what a collection is like coz it must not be similar here
I understand it's us who is more responsible than the government to keep our Nation clean.
Government sets some framework in place, sets up some regulations and we are who are responsible to take them forward.
US will always be an inspiration.
Those are some pretty nice trucks, here in Jackson, Michigan we have some descent ones depending on the different garbage services but could always use an upgrade or two..😁👍

I live in Canada and I'm a side loader and a front end curotto driver. My question is why in the USA is there so much manual collection? Why not have 95 gallon carts and have the truck do all the heavy lifting?
Most cities have switched to that system or will in the near future.

Extra lift axle for Michigans weight limits, without the lift axles the trucks would be over the limit. Here in Michigan they weigh you per axle, each axle has a load limit, extra axles add extra weight capacity.

Awesome video!! Great to see more launch footage, some of favorite things to watch. Quite bright out at 6:15 haha Neat to see how they do the Curotto testing! I'm curious how they do that out here, unfortunately, there's only a few yards that have Curottos still. That Carry Can was really neat to see. Loved seeing those Curottos pick up stuff with the arm. The semi-auto at 8:38 was great, and I love the extra tank on that. 15:23 was one of my favorite clips, the truck just looks real nice in that one. Idk why but it looks better than any of the other ACXs that they have in my opinion. At least from that angle lol Was disappointed to hear about Dearborn Heights. I know you're a huge Rizzo fan, but I hope that with the downfall of them and GFL taking over, this yard will be able to get more work. Great compilation!
Glad I was able to provide! It was filmed back in July, so it was pretty light. I did that intentionally. I'd have to assume they do something similar. 15:23 is probably the best looking because of the old carry can, brings out the new shinyness! I'm not sure what will happen with Rizzo. All I know is that after the corruption sweep by the FBI, a handful of cities may reconsider Rizzo, and GFL is going to aggressively rebrand the Rizzo fleet. Thank you sir!

This site is/was a CNG site requiring trucks to be parked forward. The video shows diesel units as well but all are parked that way for uniformity of the launches in a CNG yard.

Well Waste Management bought out Advance Disposal now, so they have yards in Detroit Southfield, and Romulus
WM has owned them since 2020 it's not a new buyout.

Great stuff, I'm jealous of how cool everyone is up there. Really enjoyed seeing the launch. Neat to see the CNG resi front, I had just figured they were all Curottos. Is that trailer park a 2 man front load route or was he training someone? Wow, they really filled up the hopper at 6:20! Nice catch on that dryer with the curotto! Can't believe how lax they are about double siding! Great sound on the Mack at 10:11! Nice shot at 16:11, knowing WM I figured they would order these set so that you could only dump with the break set. Anything noteworthy coming over from Whitmore Lake?
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Nope, more carry cans than Curottos. That trailer park is always a 2 man crew. These guys are very chill about 2 siding, they even encourage it. We have some Volvo and Sterling Leaches, along with some Loadmasters.

How is it driving a front loader? Is it a good job? I’m looking for a new job soon
I drive a side loader and recently got trained on a front end truck. Its lots of fun. Just watch out for over head hazards. When in doubt take the extra few seconds to get out and look!
What’s the starting pay? What are the typical start and end time?
@@Kevindatrucker hmmm it's hard to say as I work for a completely different company. All I know is that (at least) here in Canada garbage truck drivers get paid very well if your working for a reputable company. I usually work anywhere from 6 hours a day to 11-12 hours a day. Depends on what route I'm doing and if any coworkers are sick or on holidays. I work Monday to Friday.
Kevin Cassidy if you don’t mind me asking, how much specifically do you get payed? I’m just really curious since it’s generally the notion that garbage men are at the bottom of the economic hierarchy, so this idea that they actually get paid good money is interesting to me.
