Whats up everybody! I’m that guy Osiris and today we are gonna talk about Oval diamonds. If you're new to the channel, I’m a GIA trained diamond expert and I educate you on diamonds, help you maximize your budget, and help you to avoid buying mistakes.
Oval diamonds are beautiful and unique. Its elongated design makes it appear larger than other diamond shapes of the same carat weight. If you like a round shape but are looking to have something that has character and flash, then an oval might just be the one.
An Oval is considered a fancy-shaped diamond. A negative is that GIA doesn’t give ovals cut grades.
Step one- understand the length to width ratio.
An oval diamond has a classic look. That look is defined by the shape. Sounds obvious yes?
You want to avoid the stubby looking diamonds and want to be in a ratio of 1.35-1.50.
Here is an example of a 1.25 length to width ratio. now look at it in comparison to a 1.50 ratio.
A short oval will not have the same presence as an elongated one. I personally like 1.40-1.50 as it gives you a larger look. This, of course, is subjective. Beauty is in the eyes of the
    beholder.
Take a look at the size benefits by going to a classic ratio.
7.12 versus 8.31, this is the same carat weight yet you gain over a 1 mm advantage.
You will find that there is a price increase with an ideal shape but that is the diamond game.,
I consider this number 1 in importance.
Step 2, as stated before, GIA doesn’t give these diamonds a cut grade. WHY? Because there are too many variables at play. Too many lengths to width combinations that can’t be given a certain table and depth percentage that can guarantee a perfect cut. There is no perfect equation. With that said, there are general guidelines. I am adding these guidelines to my website which will have a direct link in the description. I will even have an easy one-click button that will have all these pre-selected for you just in case you are having trouble.
Here is a table to view with all the rules given. Click on the pre-formatted tab or input them to get a list of diamonds.
Step 3. Let’s discuss color. If you want to ensure you have a nice-looking white diamond, an H color is perfect. And its priced perfectly as well. I don’t think it's needed to go to an e or D color. Once a diamond is mounted, a human eye has a very hard time seeing a difference between shades. Money is better spending on a better cut or carat size that a super high color. Again, if your eyes can't perceive it, is it valuable?
So choose H first, see where this fits in your budget range and decide if a higher color makes sense. Sometimes, a budget restricts you from getting a bigger carat but you find a higher color. In that case, it makes sense.
Step 4, clarity. I am a big believer in SI1. I always start there. If I can find an eye-clean diamond that’s SI1 it tends to be more budget-friendly. I typically never advise going over vs1. Because frankly, your eyes will never see a blemish that small. Therefor its money poorly spent.
    Step 5. Avoid the Bowtie.
You will see a long dark bowtie effect in some ovals and you want to avoid those. Oval diamonds typically all have a degree of bowtie effect. As long as you choose a diamond with a very light effect you are in the clear. Here is an example of a bad bowtie and a great bowtie.
If you follow these steps, you will be on your way to finding a great deal on a beautifully sparkly oval diamond. Feel free to take a look at my site for my free tips and articles on diamonds and always you can reach out to me for free advice.

Hey man, I’ve been watching so many of your videos in preparation for purchasing an engagement ring for my future wife. I just wanted to take a second to give you a huge thank you for making things so simple and easy to understand.
At first, I was terrified by not only all of the daunting specifications of diamond shopping, but perhaps more so the price. After watching your videos, I’m so much more confident with the buying process and am thrilled that I’ll be able to get her an amazing ring much sooner than anticipated and at half the cost. So thank you again so much! You’re really doing an incredible service to so many people out there. Keep it up.

Thank you thank you thank you! All I needed was a starting point and finally I now have one! There is so much to choose from and all these letters and numbers just confused me. I want a 3ct oval or pear size center stone and my budget is $20k. Im not sure if one exist that I will like in my desired ct size but I will remain hopeful. At least I know where to start with H and a SI1. Thank you so much! Out of the pear and oval shape which one will give me a larger look? I do plan on putting a halo around either one to give it a more of a wow factor. Thank you

I am very glad that my videos have been helpful. I do have bad news. a 3 carat for twenty will be impossible to find. Especially if the cut is excellent. I like pear for size. Pears will have a bigger spread. A halo gives it a wow factor that's for sure. Especially in that size range. H SI1 for sure.

One can simply decide to not choose a diamond with a visual bowtie. They didn't eliminate them, rather they just show you a premium selection with a premium price attached. You can simply navigate a website and choose to avoid bowties and avoid paying a premium.

James Allen website has 2 other tabs - Symmetry and Polish. The "Excellent" Symmetry and Polish graded diamonds are very few in number and expensive.
Is it worth to choose the "Very Good" grades of Symmetry and Polish, with ideal Depth and Table percentages?
    What are your advises.

    • @OsirisDiamonds

Yes, it is still worth it. If the cut is excellent, the other factors are in the ideal percentages and symmetry and polish are very good, you can still have a beautiful sparkly diamond.
