"HOW EMBARRASSING" Our first Tesla Y supercharge

- I'm thinking we should have watched the instruction videos in the app before we took delivery of the Tesla Y.
Thank you to the kind gentleman that helped us out.
Firstly, nothing to feel embarrassed about anything. It's really nice to see real world videos like this espeacially for new owners who are still learning how to charge and the costs. Also, a big shout out to that levely gentleman on the help he was providing. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video!!
Thank you.
@@TheGT3Guy Are the lithium-ion battery explosions "free" as well? And do you have a big fire extinguisher icon on you monitor?
@@mattrowan2680Yes, Idiot, all of that is free, with a fire extinguisher as well.🤥
@@mattrowan2680 What's "free" are internal combustion fires. They happen every day! In fact, an internal combustion vehicle is roughly 12x more likely to catch fire. When they do catch fire, internal combustion very often fully engulfs, and it does so much faster, meaning that if you're in the car, you're likely to be severely burned or die. Lithium can fully engulf the car too, but it takes so long that most people have plenty of time to get out, often with their things.
Thanks for playing!
Anyone who buys one of these also buckles their seatbelt to move a car 6 inches closer to charger lol. Get help !!!😂
Very nice driver helping you there. Brilliant.
Really like this video... normal people being normal, excited for you, hope you enjoy your new car.
Thanks! Will do!
Oh well, I guess I'm switching back to gasoline. 😂
I'll do vice versa, since my wife did this a couple times to a gas car, so I guess I should go EVs lol. 😂
Wow new owners and learning in process then getting help from another owner. Awesome and congrats!
Thanks 👍
Congrat on your new Model Y. We have one with 15K miles, love it, Welcome to Tesla family.
That other owner could have told them not to charge at the space reserved for EVs that are towing a trailer.
That was entertaining. Kudos to the man that helped you all out.
Thank you.
Both of them are nice to each other ! Perfect team !
congrats on the new Tesla! Everyone has a first time, I remember having to backup like three times to get it correctly lined up... and of course it happened to be at a pretty busy charger so several people got to watch my first time! LOL. Welcome to the club!
Thank you.
God bless that man helping explain everything. Enjoy your new car 👍
You two seem very fun. We need more Tesla videos with you both!
Thank you. This video was a fluke I never thought it would get this many views.
To anyone laughing at the antics in this video, I personally had to start from scratch at all that I subsequently became expert in. Everybody has to learn at everything. Greetings from Scotland.
WOW Scotland, my wife is from London. I can't believe how many views and from so many countries this video has gotten. My main purpose of this channel is for my Porsche GT3 not the Tesla. lol Thanks for watching!
Congratulations on your new Model Y. It’s beautiful. I’ll give you an important tip. To use your wipers. You push on the left stock button to activate your wipers. To increase or decrease your wiper speed use the left ‘toggle wheel’ on your steering wheel. Each click to the right increases wiper speed, to the left decreases wiper speed. This is allot safer than using the screen for your wiper control. To wash your windshield, just hold down that left end button till cleaner fluid squirts out. Happy Trails. 😊
You can also hold the toggle wheel to the left or right for a second to quicky select "off" or "auto" mode.
It’s great wen someone knows it all and is happy to help great guy 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Take time to sit in your car and go through the on screen menu. The manual is in there too, while charging is a great time to read.
Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for sharing your first charging experience. Enjoy!
Thanks for watching!
Glad you went with the 19" wheels. Electric vehicles are heavy so more tire/air cushioning helps with smoothness. I don't think paying $2k for the 20" wheels is a good use of money since you get worse ride quality and higher chance of scratching the rims. I've driven the Performance Model Y with 21" wheels and wow you can tell it's a huge drop in ride smoothness
If you’re going to wait that long to charge it I’d put the car in camping mode, get the mattress up,black out the windows and have some fun with Mama 😂
HAHA. Great idea, I like the way you think.
I learned a lot from that man more than the other videos I watched 🎉😊
You guys are going to do just fine. It’s a big learning curve and especially in the winter with reduced mileage
Thank you!
Yes this car (it has Florida plates) will get horrible mileage when it gets to 10 below zero. But if it gets that cold in Florida, electron mileage might be the least of their problems.
And a frozen charging door. Lovely.
From the Ford Lightning owners manual --
All rechargeable batteries no matter what composition lose a tiny bit of their capacity during each recharge cycle.
Fast DC chargers cause your lightning battery pack to lose more capacity faster than the slow AC charger your truck
came with. it is recommended that you use the slow AC charger at home to maximize the life of your Lightning
battery back.
NOW before you say 'I'm too busy for that. I gotta use the fast chargers on the street' Call your Ford dealer parts desk
& ask them what the current price is for a Lightning battery pack.
!
I have to disagree with this generality. Leaving the battery at a higher state of charge is worse than fast charging as far as battery life, so if battery life is your primary concern, do not leave the car for extended periods at high charge. 50pct to 60pct is a good number. If this means fast charging a bit more often, that's ok. Otherwise, top it up at home just the night before you need more charge than this for your day.
Imagine if this was a Mach E at another charging station. Got to download the app, enter the station's number, wait 30 second for it to initiate, then sit around only to find out it's charging at 1/5th the speed that the station promised. Then some guy comes over and tell you that sometimes you have to unplug and replug it back in for the top speed...or to move to another station. You move to another station just for handshake to fail..then you move back and it's now charging at 1/2 the speed as promised..lol. This is when most people regret their EV purchasing decision.
My friend has a volvo EV and he has like a page full of apps of 8 different branded charging stations.
I had to rent a Tesla model 3 after a long travel day--kind of hated it at first (learning curve), but now it's turned into a great long-term test drive--now I'm interested in acquiring one down the road....I'm going to miss it and I'm going to hate having to hit the brake pedal once again haha.
Since you dont use your brakes much the wheels are easy to clean. Good luck, thanks for watching.
Good for you for being open minded and letting evidence outweigh bias.
Science!
You guys look like my wife and I on our first experience charging our EV. I was actually at home talking to my wife over the phone while she was at the charging station. I mentioned to her just ask people around you they’ll be very helpful and that’s exactly what happened just like this fine gentleman who gave you guys insight. This is a fun experience. Ours was actually a loaner car however we’re considering purchasing one when our lease expires. Thanks for sharing your experience
Thanks for sharing and watching.
Congrats on your new Tesla! You'll love it. Charge-On Baby!
Thank you.
Congrats and welcome to the club. Also, just so you know, you pulled into the charger meant for Tesla's with trailers, which is why you are the only one not backed in. If the station was full, no problem, but if there are open spots, you'll want to allow this to stay open for trailer people. Enjoy your car
Thanks, I did not know that.
Club of suckers! Lol talk to me in 8 years when expensive repairs start to happen! Lol
@@kv1930You do not know that!
@@kv1930 Sucker, do you know a bunch of owners of 2013-2016 Tesla's that are having lots of expensive repairs? Because I know several that aren't.
@@tomh2349 I agree that there are some who don't have major repairs (yet) just like some people don't have major repairs with a jag....my point any new technology has potential risk to be costly, simply because it's not yet proven by time(20+years). I'm excited to see how EV's will progress in the next 20 years!! Same thing when cell phones came out(Brick)....for now people who choose to spend $$ on unproven technology are in Mt view naive pioneers!

They need to make those gas pump hoses longer. I’m so glad my gas powered truck only takes a few minutes to put gas in.
I'm so glad I don't need to charge outside of my house majority of the year. $10 for 300miles of electricity is great too. If you buy a EV without a home charger you should not buy an EV and rely on supercharging or plan on going out and getting food every few days while it's charging. I never have to go to a gas station anymore
You also have to calculate how long you had to work to make the money to fill your truck with gas. Then you really have an apples to apples comparison. For me @.11/Kwh hr for 1000mi/month. Costs me $30/month
Some people just do the research and read the manual. Great job helping the lady!
Reading manuals is boring. I learned my first tesla in 2019 on the fly. Much more exciting!
@@wolfgangpreier9160also less safe.
A View from the UK. We will all be in the same boat soon and hope we have somebody nice near us who will help.
There are lots of Tesla tutorials which you can view from your Tesla account or inside the car itself. Worth spending a few minutes doing so.
Congrats! For those who consider EVs, please research and educate yourself as much as you can before purchasing and driving in one.
True. It’s important to learn that EV’s will cost you more in maintenance, repairs, insurance, purchase price, and soul-crushing depreciation over your ownership. Also that they are worse for the environment with battery mining and tire dust and that they are junked sooner than ICE cars. But it’s worth it because they are actually less reliable and more likely to leave you stranded on the side of the freeway.
@@JetFire9 My experience for 5 years of ownership 78k miles is that it is cheaper in maintenance ($120 for 12v battery replacement and $44 for 2 sets of air filters) and operating cost (electricity vs gas), few hundreds more in insurance compared to BMW, purchase price I bought it with federal incentive at the time, so depreciation wise it's not "soul-crushing" and the responsiveness is awesome.
Plenty of 200k+ miles driven EVs and didn't buy it for the environment reasons (good or bad). It's been more reliable than my BMWs for sure which costs $100 per oil change, ignition coils go bad, spark plugs, brake pads, rotors, brake fluid change, coolant flush, leak detection pump failure, control arm bushing, transfer case fluid, transmission fluid.
@@JetFire9 Who cares? You only live once. Stop living under a rock.
@@JetFire9Wow! That's what happens when someone does not educate himself about EVs and recites everything he's heard here or there.
Let's get serious. Your are right that repairs, insurance and depreciation are currently higher, as is purchase price. Maintenance cost is actually much lower. Study over study has shown that they are much better for the environment over their lifetime than ICEs, despite things like batteries being more resource intensive at first - you need to consider the sum of everything over time, not just pick out a part to talk about. Talking about lifetime, you can expect an EV to be used longer than an ICE. And reliability is a lot higher than for an ICE car, there are simply way less mechanical parts that can break.
@@JetFire9 Oh wow, you must be an expert in this matter and not babbling what the Tesla haters say.
Let’s talk about some facts:
Most ice cars have a 5year/60,000mile warranty
Teslas come with a 8year/100,000-150,000mile warranty on their batteries.
I wonder why that is🤔
Batteries are mostly made of lithium, one of the most common elements on the planet
About 8million people die every year due to air pollution related illnesses, ice vehicles make up 30% of that pollution, you do the math.
Great video. It showcases a number of reasons while I’ll never buy an ev.
Beautiful and congratulations on your great purchase. Happy driving ❤❤❤
Thank you! 🤗

Drive down to 10%.
.
Use the navigation (and voice controls!!)
.
Say "navigate to.... (Destination)"
.
The car will tell you if you need to charge
.
Pick a charger.
Navigate to that Supercharger, it preheats the pack for faster charging.
.
Look for V3 chargers in the list.... Much faster.
.
If you're on a run, 10% to 70% should give you 2.5+ hours driving and will be fast to charge (V3/ preheat)
.
Time your charging to match your meal/ comfort stops.... The car will be ready before you are (15-20 minutes)
.
Get out of the "Fueling mentality"
If you're just on short trips, "graze charge" while you do other things rather than "going to a charger to fill up"
Thank you for the tip!@@rogerstarkey5390

@@MrGoodeats👍
LOL. You will remember this... and have years of laughing at it! Cheers.
The concept of not falling below 20% and not exceeding 85% just requires more frequently of changing and longer delays on road trips.
More frequent, shorter stops, say roughly every 2-3 hours (150-200 miles) is the most efficient strategy. It’s safer and more pleasant for the driver too, and comes with the advantage that you don’t shred your battery.
Thats not a concept thats handling your battery with very soft gloves. I drive my Teslas - and all other EVs down to 0% and i charge them to 100% when i use them immediately. If i know i do not use it for a day or two i charge up to 80 or 90%. Or i let it sit at around 50%.
No, it means less delay on trips, because more energy is brought on board more quickly.
How long do you drive between stops on your road trips?
My 2019 Model 3 can do about 3 hours between 80% and 20%, more time than we prefer to drive uninterrupted.
We normally charge from 20%-60% every 2 to 2.5 hours.
Takes less than 20 minutes, and is usually done before we’re ready to go.
Going under 20pct isn't a problem. It will pick up this 20 very fast.. Like almost no time. Going over 80 on the other hand will cost you time. Particularly over 90pct.
@@wolfgangpreier9160let's see what your battery health is after a few years. Running it down to zero is definitely not good, but the concept of not letting it sit at 100% charge makes since. If you are lucky enough to be able to charge at home, it's not worth stretching the limits.
Your lucky you have a beautiful chauffeur !

"This is like watching paint dry". Best comment yet.
They so cute.😊
Did you precondition the battery before pulling up to the chargers so you could get faster charging speed?
Yes, we tested out the nav system by asking it to guide us to a supercharger, so it automatically stared to precondition the battery. But we only charged the battery for the 3% that you see in the video we were just doing it to learn the process for when we do go on a trip. We haven't yet used a supercharger to charge the car on the go. Thanks for watching.

How long did it have to precondition?
@@tommornini2470 about 15 minutes and depend on the weather condition.

As a boomer who purchased my Model Y 4 months ago, driving the Tesla is awesome! And fast! And fun! Its all a computer nerd could ever wish for.
To be fair when I first learned to drive, I always was too far away from the gas pump or did not leave enough space for me to open the door😂. It’s a new learning experience.
EVs are a completely different experience and you should thoroughly research the car you want before buying. Ignorance can cause slowdowns at chargers from people who did not navigate to the charger to preheat battery.
In Florida it's best to have a gas car to outrun the hurricanes. Personally it takes too long to charge and it's more expensive than gas.
In cold climate make sure to research about the vehicle- specifically about the battery pre-conditioning.
Thanks for the advice.

No. 😊😊😊
I think it is unethical to sell someone a car without seeing that they can safely operate the car. I’ve got 2 Teslas (S & X) and an electric ‘64 VW Beetle. One day a service center had to keep my X and they loaned me a 3 with no instructions. Most everything is different. I couldn’t get it off the lot without going back to the service center and having them show me how it operates.
Yes, its unethical to sell someone a phone without going through all menus and apps with them.
Because every ICE vehicle manufacturer and dealership have done this in the past.
It’s like plugging in an appliance. 💡
Is the color stealth Grey?
It just says Gray on the title. Thanks for asking.
Why didn’t the dealer gives some quick training.
Like where charging receptacle is..hmm
It takes an average of about 6 or 7 min. to refuel an average vehicle with gasoline. Gasoline stations are all across the country whereas charging stations you have to plan your route around charging stations.
Wait until governments start shutting fuel stns and they will then were all stuffed.
This is why EV sales are down but a lot. People now see how painful it is to own/lease these crappy, soulless teslas.
I do not go to a petrol station. And it takes me about 5-10 seconds to charge my car. Just as long as it takes to charge my phone.
@@sunshadow9704Nonsense. Nobody stays watching paint dry or any electric gadget charge.
@@wolfgangpreier9160 it takes 5 seconds to open the tank. Not to charge. And you must plan road trips ahead. It’s seriously inconvenient.
With ICE, no planing required.
In case when both vehicles out of juice, a call to aaa solves the issue and ICE vehicle continues. EV on another hand is done for the day and financial impact in that scenario is not even comparable. 25$ for 5 gallons with Ice vs couple hundred with ICE.
It has been shown many times that for the road trips EV are 30-70% slower due to more frequent stops.
The only scenario where EV fits the bill is short local trips.
What EV owners save on gas vs a cost of electricity, you over pay for the insurance.
Also now you must deal with reduced selection of companies as many do not cover teslas. Another big downside.

In our defence we just bought the car that day. My wife drives the car to work 50 miles one way per day so I wanted to take her to a supercharger so I could make sure she would know how to charge the car. We only, as you can see charged it 3%. What about if you buy used🤔and want to charge? Do you create an account beforehand? Thanks!
You must always setup a Tesla account when owning a Tesla. It’s easy to setup on the internet, your VIN number is necessary. Any supercharger charge will be paid via your Tesla account. Of course you must have a credit/debit card loaded on your account. It’s like shopping on Amazon etc. The supercharger will recognise your Tesla quickly and once verified the electricity will flow as indicated by the light changing from blue to green.
Yes. To gain ownership you need a Tesla account. That's all you need. Enjoy your silent rocket ship. Try it
Yes, everybody can create an account. You will need one if you charge your Hyundai at the next Supercharger anyway.

It’s a lot more fun going to a gas station getting the taste of diesel in your expensive food and being ripped off with the prices
I got a real "charge" out of watching your video, ha ha, good luck with your new EV!
Makes you wonder how they ever managed a gas pump. Notice how nice the other Tesla drivers were?
It's perfectly normal. Everything is done for the first time at some time, and they're going to learn it. I switched from gas car to EV 9 months ago, and had a learning curve as well. How do you charge? How are charging cards used, do you need one at all, and which one? Free or paid tariff? How do superchargers work, what do the numbers and letters on them mean? When to charge, and how much? Difference in charging speed depending on SOC? What's battery conditioning, and what about cold temperatures? How to find a charging station, options for paying? What's AC and DC charging? When do I need to bring my own charging cable? How to get the plug unlocked? How to open the charge port? What happens when I leave my car at the charger for a long time? etc....
It's all dead simple and completely normal now, but I did have questions when I charged for the first time.
Thanks for having our backs. :)
Jay, they are new at this. No reason to be nasty.
Charging my tesla is fun, i really do enjoy it. I don't use a supercharger very much, but when i do i love it. I mostly charge at home with my solar.
So, whatever range Tesla tells you in the real world where we all have to live you really only have 65%=70% of that quoted number. Reason: Once the battery gets to 80% the charging virtually crawls to s snails pace for all intents and purposes and you don't want to run it to zero. Also what happens when you get to the charging station and there are others in front of you? Translated: This could take 3 or 4 hours every other day unless you live in a private house with a garage where you can install your own charging station for a couple of thousand dollars.
Or it could take about 5 minutes a day, but agree charging at home is ideal.
How adorable 😂
1) Have level 2 charging at your home. If you don't have it at your home, it makes owning a EV inconvenient. Going to a super charger for 40+ minutes, 2-3 times a week is a waste of your time and money, since it cost anywhere from 2x to 5x more than home charging. Not to mention you will lose even more range when extreme cold weather hits since you can't precondition off your home power.
2) Super chargers are primarily for road trips to get you to your next stop, ideally when at a super charger, come in around 15%, and charge to 70-80% max, unless there is a really good reason for you to go over 80% don't do it, you are wasting your time and money. That is the best use of your time to get back on the road as quickly as possible( and gives you enough time to use the toilet, stretch your legs, etc).
3) if you are an EV beginner use the tesla navigation when driving even when you know how to get you where you want to go, especially for road trips, the car will show you its planned route and if you really need to charge to get there, as well as super chargers needed to get there, as well as preconditioning the battery if charging is needed, for the fastest charging times.
"If you don't have it at your home, it makes owning a EV inconvenient".
Don't tell us that. We know that. Tell the governments mandating everyone should buy one that.
You don't need a level 2 charger at home. Been using a 220v 32 amp outlet in my garage.
@@JW-fm2cy 240v charging, about 32 amps, same thing. It's in the spec of level 2 charging. Miles better than a 120v. With a 240v you can get a full charge overnight on any battery back that's less than 80kwh.
@@Kareem-cx4fi more than likely they have that outlet in garage already. Also it's a whole lot cheaper to install a 240v 32a outlet instead of getting and installing a level 2 home charger.

Ideally, since wiring all goes to the batteries, the car should have multiple charging ports in different locations on the car for different charging situations.
And you pay for it? I certainly do not. The charge port is on the left back side. Full stop. Everyone else buying a different car must look for the specific charger from their manufacturer. Hyundai, VW, GM, Fiat etc.
@@wolfgangpreier9160 The point is that all EVs can have multiple ports for different situations at little additional cost. Better yet, for Tesla, they could design their cars like those S. Koreans drive in their country... A battery that drops out and is exchanged for a fully charged battery within minutes at automated battery exchanges. No need to waste time at a charger... Drive in, wait about 3 minutes, drive out fully charged with a different battery.
@@patrickfuchs3859 " at little additional cost. " one DC charge port costs around 1500,-- US$, plug, cabling, Control, fuses, mounting costs.
A second one costs around 2.000,-- with contactors to switch.
But a third starts around 5.000,--
Why?
Because then you need a DC/DC Charger.
Teslas have their charge port on the left side which is the right side and not on the right side which is the wrong side.
And certainly never in front! Try to start a charge when your front is baked in ice.
Why?
The best chargers in the world are all set up for left-rear charging ports.
No need to waste all that copper and electricity due to resistance.
@@wolfgangpreier9160 That's what the price is. Price is not related to manufacturing cost. As an example, I work in healthcare and 3 feet of blood pressure hose is $70 yet if it were sold at a hardware store it's cost about $5.
I will never get used to waiting to fill up my car. What if it is late at night and cold and no one was around?
Ideal to charge at home.
You can stay nice and warm, and safe, inside the car.
Mines is on the left side
I'm not in the market for an EV but given current technology, I couldn't fathom planning any long trips with one. 40 minutes to charge with a range of 300 +/- miles, and seriously having to plan where to stop all the time. And while their point source pollution is nil, lithium mining and manufacturing, and battery disposal, come with significant environmental costs. It takes a lot of petroleum to bring a lithium battery to a level of usefulness. One should be aware of the generation source of the electricity to charge the vehicle. If it's hydro or solar or wind, fine, but if it's coal, gas, or oil, what good does an EV do?
