the most important part would be to no longer pay the energy with that life long supercharging and or charging at home from a solar roof .
complete game changer for us avoiding dirty and expensive gas stations. If you drive cross country then super chargers will be your friend too.
Great car, great purchase and lots of value "gained" by taking some risks cause even if it would have been completely dead the broken PD90 would be worth more due to lifelong charging. Even tesla would swap the dead battery for about 12 000 here and you would get back another car life good for another 100.000 miles or 170.000 km where 100.000 km would cost here in a usual merecedes cruising at just 130 km / h 8 Liter x 2 $ or
      1000 hkm x 16$ / hkm = 16.000 $ of cause incl. VAT
Great Deal now and also in the future cause the car has already lot more value than what you had paid for and it looks to be in great shape considering now MKL on like an old Mercedes S Class would have to offer at such mileage.
      Good luck - from germany.

My daily driver is a 2015 model S I picked up for $13k out the door. After the tax credit, under $10k. Threw some new tires and it’s good to go. Honesty blown away by how impressed I am with the car. Keep in mind they’re cheap for a reason, if the battery goes out, you’re looking at $10k to replace it.
But hey, these things regularly reach 200k+ miles. Mine had 78k when I bought it and now it’s at 95k and running great. Something really cool about getting into my car every morning and it being at a “full tank”.

@@themonsterunderyourbed9408 Only if you can't do elementary math. A car with the same performance as a Tesla will have a high performance engine that requires Premium gas, and gets 20 Mpg on a good day.
The EV battery warranty on a Model S like the 2015 has a 8 year unlimited mile warranty, and will easily last 15 years.
But lets say it fails after 12 years and you drive 20k miles a year.
That is 240,000 miles, 12,000 gallons of Premium Gas, at $4.20 a gallon, or $50,400 worth of fuel.
Meanwhile, unlimited Supercharging on the 2015 Model S is free, and charging it at home will cost you around 5 cents per mile.
Even if you drove it while charging it 100% of the time at home, your total electricity cost would be $12,000, or $38,000 less.
So no, even if the battery failed, and even if you bought a brand new one for $20,000 instead of rebuilding it for $5,000, you would still be way ahead...

There are some screaming good deals on used EVs but it is really important to do a little homework if the sales price isn't in your "play money" budget. Every EV has at least one fan/owner's group, and their forum will tell you what kind of issues to look for when checking out a car. 8 years ago I bought my first EV, a 2011 Nissan LEAF with a weak battery. The seller let me take it to a dealer for a diagnostic test where I learned the battery was still under warranty. I bought the car for a song, had the battery replaced for free, and my cousin's kid now commutes in it every day having accumulated about 120,000 miles on it.

Both of our cars have manual transaxles, and we both do our own maintenance on the cars. We both love these cars and feel they've been the most reliable cars we've had, as well as fun to drive. AAAaaaannd....Even with the maintenance I've done on my car.....I haven't spent anywhere near $120,000. Not even a quarter of that, including the cost of the car. I also don't have any problem finding a place to refuel when I go on trips. I also don't lose a quarter or a half of my range on a full tank in the winter. If my car gets hit, it will cost a lot less than a Tesla to repair, especially since insurance companies don't want the liability to repair the car when there might be damage to the battery or battery container, so they just total the car. There are a number of videos about that here on RUclips.
I also don't have to look at the large screen to do ANYTHING in the car while taking my eyes off the road (mine doesn't have one). I can skip through radio stations while keeping my eyes on the road because I can FEEL the buttons and go through them in whatever pattern I want just by feel. Same thing for my heater/AC controls. There are way too many things that you have to go through several screens to change in a Tesla while driving, making it dangerous for you and everyone around you. Texting on a phone while driving is dangerous. So is changing the screen to another screen, touching a PICTURE of a button, just the right button, to get to yet another screen, to then find another specific picture of a button to touch to bring up the choices for what you want to......never mind. You just smashed into the car in front of you that suddenly stopped while you were looking at the screen.

First I called VW, company not dealership, to find out why they bought it back. They told me it was a door lock issue which was fixed by a software update not available at the time it was designated as a Lemon. VW also said they would honor all existing warranties on the car. Not so with some other manufacturers I spoke to about their used vehicles with branded titles. Just to see what the used car dealership would say I asked them what the problem was with the car. They verified what VW told me so I felt they were an honest place to do business. I took the car to a local VW dealership for a thorough pre-purchase inspection during which they updated the software. The tech told me the car had absolutely no problems. 3000 miles later the car has given us zero problems and is a pleasure to drive. There are many fantastic deals on used EVs just do your homework. BTW the tax credit is available only to those that haven't gotten a tax credit on an EV in the past three years.

Humm, that is a good question. The used ev tax credit according to the IRS but be given by dealers and pre-registered via the website. The bill does not state if an auction is classified as a dealer. For 2024 in order for the credit to be given the dealer needs to create an account that registers the dealer...once done..the vin is submitted and the irs will clear the car for the used credit UP TO 4,000. As you paided only 10k I would guess...if you can get qualified after the fact, it will be less than 4,000. Again, the used ev credit is stated to be given at the point sale and if not given you can not get it later. It works differently vs new car ev credits.

    • @davidbergerson
      @davidbergerson 21 день назад +16

@@jeremybrown6894 Again, that is incorrect. The EV tire issue is extremely misleading. Let's put this in reality. If you purchase tires that have a 40k mile lifespan, on an EV, you will want to change them out probably between 38-42k. If you are in an ice car, you will want to change them out between 40 to 42k.
There are special EV tires that you can get. Do you know what makes them EV tires? They have sound supression foam in them. Why? Because prior to EV's the tires didn't have to worry that much about road noise because the engine noise killed it. They may also have a profile to help with range.
How much more are tires with foam in them? With the range? Well, I just checked Discount tire and for (4) Birdgestone Turanza EV 255/45 R19 104W XL BSW it is $1240. That would be for a 2023 Model Y. The comparable BMW would be the M3. The Bridgestone Dueler H/P Sport AS, the OEM tire, is $1360. The estimate is that they will last about 3k miles more.
Tires are simple to understand. The amount of miles they last is directly related to how heavy your foot is, as well as where you drive. EVs tend to get 95-98% of the range of comparable model ICE cars. That has to do with the weight and torque.

@@supertouring1 Tires are changed based on your driving habits. Tire wear is due to the torque the car produces, just like any other high performance car. If you drive it hard, tires wear out quickly, drive it gently and they last much longer. I think mine last around 20k to 30k miles or so.
Breakdowns are pretty rare. I have replaced some display screens, the main MCU computer and some door handles on my 2014. Total cost is probably around $3000 over 8 years, or around $350 a year.
Mine with 130k miles still has over 90% of original battery capacity, so with a car that came with 265 miles of range, I get just over 240 miles of range today on a 10 year old car.

Only thing I did to it is to replace tires and all the control arms. $800 cost with me doing the replacement. I will never go back to a smoking car.

I was an EV non believer until recently I bought a 2016 BMW i3 Rex wholesale and I love the car it was 8k with 71k miles. It has been flawless and I commute to work and back everyday for next to nothing. It charges in the wall with a 12v and it slowly charges to your next set departure time to protect battery life, it will also charge off peak so your using the electricity when it is the cheapest. I would not an ev as my only car but it has been to experience something new. Only thing I have replaced has been front struts, heated seat element, and a parking sensor all of which I bought and replaced myself. Totally recommend taking the risk if you can get a decent EV for a cheap price. I also kind of have Tesla fever now 😂

Sam....save yourself some headache and service that sunroof immediately.
Anyone considering an older used Model S should know a few things. Drive units fail often. The design is flawed. They run coolant through the unit, and the coolant seals go bad quite often. Coolant floods the units, and they must be replaced. They released an updated drive unit that bypasses the coolant through the units in November 2023. It's about an $8k job, parts and labor, and it's WHEN not IF on the failure. Bigger issue on the RWD cars than the AWD cars. The fuse Sam replaced is another known issue, and it's about time....nothing else. They must ALL be replaced around the 10 year mark. Parking brakes are another known issue. The early sunroofs are another known issue. If you pick one up and the roof is still working, service it IMMEDIATELY and then do it yearly.
I just sold my 2014 Model S last week and know them all too well! I sold my green with tan interior MS 60 with 130k miles on it for $17k. A working P90D for under $11k is indeed a steal.

I've seen running ones for $10-15k and the only issue is it has got worn out battery and high mileage, but the thing is a lot of people can get away with as little as 100 miles of range which is usually like 1/3rd-1/5th of original range.

    • @barttemolder3405

Tesla batteries generally deteriorate to 90-80% when they get old but no further. That's because they have lots of small cells in parallel (47 typically), and when one of those fails it blows its fuse and the range drops by 2% for that tranche of cells. Even old packs have less than 0.5% cell failure so the chance that 5 or more cells in the same tranche fail is quite slim.
Tesla replaces the batteries when the range drops below 70%, and that does not happen very often.
Other EV manufacturers use bigger cells, but the cells fail when a dendrite forms and shorts the cathode and anode; a big cell has more chance of that than a small cell (because it has more substrate where dendrites can form) and when it does it has a bigger impact on the performance. Tesla's many cells are more costly to produce but much more resilient.

You may just have not shown it, but never apply a coating unless you have decontaminated the paint with fall out + tar remover, clay barred it and used a fine cut polish without fillers or built in sealant. Cleanest paint possible is required for best application and longest life. No point in protecting dirty paint.
