  • There is more to the Orions than their surface level depiction, but of course we have to dig deeper. They are after-all, THE race to introduce the green-skinned alien babe trope.
    But as said, from their government to their syndicate, there is more to their society than first appears.
    This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
    For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
    Thanks for watching!
    How to VOTE on what happens next:
    Down below in the comments are two choices of topics left by me.

    To me I find it unusual that there aren't more Orion half breeds in trek universe considering their propensity for, um, physical relations. I mean even the vulcans with their copper based blood could still have half human off spring, so I know it's possible.

      A female betazoid orion hybrid would be quite the dangerous woman

    • @redonslaught3019
      @redonslaught3019 Год назад +7

      Got a few thoughts on this...
      Easiest is their genes are very dominant leading to the hybrids being almost undisguisable, a kin to human hybrids with only reduced ridges or slight ear points, that can disappear after a couple generation or are easy to cosmetically fix to fit their standards...
      Or they might even have rules that only those passable as "pure" Orion are let on ships to meet other races. Either because they don't know how new race will react to seeing other races. Say they had a half Vulcan on board when making first contact with Andorians when they were still at war, that would put an end to those "talks"... Or maybe it's a strategy because many races find smoother skin more appealing and less threatening. Kind of like how Cardassian women got surgery for smoother skin to look more Bajorian.
      Their whole thing is getting "close" so if the other people think your in "bed" with their enemy or if your "repulsive" to them that plan falls a apart quickly...

      If the copper blood based species had a vascular system that was similar to ours (which if you believe the preservers seeded the Star Trek galaxy did) they would look more greenish in the same situations humans would start looking rosey.

    Awesome video. I like these cultural indicies. I only wish the writers of the time (1950s-60s) had any biological background. I know they chose green for copper-based blood based on the verdigris found on copper objects that corrode over time. It just so happens that there is a species on earth the has copper-base haemoglobin, the horseshoe crab. Unfortunately for trek, the blood is a clear electric blue in colour, not green. Oh well, what can you do?

    The Orions are divided into several ethic groups. Some of the groups are working legitimately with the other powers. Some of the other Orion groups prefer to be great manipulators like the members of the Orion Syndicate.

    Your pauses are duly noted. I wonder, what would be the offspring of an Orion and a Deltan, given the noted "problem" of Deltan pheromones on other species? If there arose telepathy among such blends, their ability to manipulate would be amazingly important and difficult to overcome.

    The orions from Star Trek: Discovery look more like the nebari from Farscape.

  • @Jokie155
    @Jokie155 5 лет назад +23

    I'm still impressed that Discovery went and brought back the Orions, same as Enterprise did. TNG, DS9 and Voyager were all really lax on the secondary classic species, with only one Andorian appearing between all of them and looking awful to boot, and maybe one Tellarite in Voyager, zero appearance from the Orions though.
    At least the post-millenium shows actually bother to do stuff with the different aliens that TOS established. Not like painting someone green would be that difficult to begin with...

    I am very disappointed at the lack of green boo... i mean orion females displayed in this episode. You know damn well people clicked on this expecting to see some fine orion female specimens instead we got that ugly orion dude with a toothpick in his cheek. The lore presented in the video was great, but the imagery, not so much. You could have simply cut a few scenes from that orion episode from ST Enterprise and talk over them...
    I am disappoint.

    That's pretty sweet. I just watched BOUND. I think the Orion's kinda fun. I think they need to use the right color that makes the Females skin glow electric green. Leave the males camou. Culturally it appears the idea may be derived from Egypt's Orsiris? But there's always Nordic Mythology with Cernunnos, The Green Man. Biblically, & I feel most importantly, it's crucial to understand Orion is one of the most repeatedly recognized select few renown Holy Celestial Skymarks specifically addressed & accredited by Our Lord.
    I particularly enjoy the women as I enjoy a healthy variety of Color given good form. :)

    If Orions have copper based skin, why are they green? Horseshoe crabs have copper based skin and they're not green, in fact their blood is blue! We have red iron based blood, but contrary to popular belief, we are not pink, lol..... not a serious question, not looking for an answer.

    is ENTERPRISE some alternate timeline (as I seem to recall an episode of ENTERPRISE that revealed that Orion women were commonly the masters of the males (their slaves))?... oh, hadn't heard the later-part of the video yet (where you talk about that a little) - I guess that kind of echoes human-history, where people sort of '"justify" owning slaves' by the slavery they- or others of their ethnicity-had gone through.
