  • A person owes who they are to a collection of memories and experiences. So what happens when those memories get extended and added to from 5,6,7 new people? That person is still you aren't they? Just you plus... more?
Questions like this are why Trill Initiates undergo three years of training before getting a Symbiont.
So yeah, We're looking at the Trill, joined or not.
This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
    Thanks for watching!

In an emergency, a Trill can be joined with a symbiote without going through the initiate training program. This was the case with Ezri Tigan who was Joined with Dax in order to save its life after the violent death of Jadzia left the Dax symbiote critically wounded. Ezri was simply the only Trill available at the time and to them, ALL other priorities are secondary to the survival of the symbiote. Besides Ezri Dax was the CUTEST officer in Starfleet. Cuteness always gets a pass.😁

      @arklestudios 6 лет назад +53

I kinda wish they'd had more time to explore that in the show than they did, but they only had one season and a massive war arc to wrap up, so I understand why "fleshing out what it must be like for a Trill who'd never wanted to be joined suddenly being joined" was set aside.
Not to mention that, I think it's all but explicit that the Dax symbiont is like a rock star amongst symbiotes; its the one every Initiate probably hopes they'd get, the way probably most Starfleet cadets have their fingers crossed for a posting to the Enterprise. I mean, if you were in Ezri's shoes, would YOU want to be the one who let arguably the most famous Trill *ever* die?

It's so funny these things are just Evil Symbiots but call themselves 'Symbiotic' even though they do not fullfill any Requirement of that Description, and most Fans don't even seem to have noticed.
As we saw in the First Trill of 'The Next Generation', these are just Goa'uld (for those who know them...):
They care nothing about the Hosts, whose personality gets surpressed completly and whose Live means nothing. They are not at all distressed when the Body dies and clearly Favor one life over another. One Race over another. It's all very obvious. This is not what Symbiotic means, for crying out loud!
Neither Star Trek Characters nor Fanbase seems to have noticed this?! Wow.

Although the Goauld does give you some nice physical perks and potentially a lot of knowledge from the genetic memory.
But then again on the other hand I would guess that the transfer of skills and knowledge is a little bit smoother for the Trill seeing as the Goauld and it's host still are distinct personalities.
Which of course can also be seen as an advantage since your personality remains largely unaltered but can also lead to some problems since the host and the Goauld can disagree.
And finally there is also the problem that if they disagree the Goauld usually does have the last word in the actions taken which since most of them are kind of a over-the-top cliche bad guys more often than not mean that your personality might be unchanged, but suppressed entirely.
Also I think the intelligence boost might be bigger for a Goauld but I'm not certain about that.

Also it was shown that the symbiote's have distinct brainwave patterns of their own. So it seems like they would have a personality of their own that could perhaps act as a low level filter through which the Host's own thoughts are affected. But since the symbiotes never actively take a position of dominance in their relationship, it's hard to tell.

Dax do this when inplanted to become Ezri Dax due to Ezri only accepting to become a temporary host but transfer delayed to long so their bond became permanent.

Aliens in sci-fi often represent aspects of human nature. The Trill symbiosis link is much like reincarnation. We usually don't remember previous incarnations, to prevent them from interfering in the current one. That Trill symbiosis link shows how it could be, if we did.
There is also the theory that we could obtain memories from those of our ancestors. This was shown in that 'One step beyond' episode called 'Father image'. That Trill symbiosis link shows also how it could be.

It seems to me that Trill society has two major classes: people who have symbionts and people who don't. The former, hosts, are rare and get to benefit from lifetimes of memories, making them societal elites. The latter, meanwhile, are common people who don't get any special powers. And there's a Commission that decides who is who. This sounds like a deeply unfair setup.
I mean, imagine being a normal Trill. There's a treatment out there that can give people incredible knowledge and experience AND make their minds functionally immortal. Only a select few are allowed to have the treatment and, once they get it, they naturally enter into the upper echelons of society. Every normal Trill has to compete with that. Want to be a senator? A pioneering scientist? A transcendent artist? Good luck without a symbiont. Many hosts have done all that and more in their past lives - they're a shoe-in for any job they want.
That sounds like an oppressive social order to me. I wonder how many Trill want a revolution. Maybe one day every Trill can get a symbiont of their own. Or, if that's impossible, maybe technology can replace the symbionts with a fairer system.

    • @cramer4506

You're completely forgetting the fact that Symbiotes are sapient creatures too, and that for a lot of Trill, joining could actually be dangerous if they weren't vetted beforehand. An incapable Trill could have the joining destroy their own consciousness or even kill them, so the vetting is clearly an act that protects the Trill as well. And to suggest Trill society should violate the consent of a sapient creature, forcing it to join with any Trill all because it's more "fair" is super fucking gross; the idea that it's "oppression" that they do this is even more so. Also, in DS9 it's mentioned that only about a 1000 people volunteer for it, so it's quite clearly not something the vast majority of Trill even want.

It just seems the worm is more important/valuable... maybe it is, it has multiple people stored in it... I don't know...)... Hmm, no mention of the inconsistencies between the original TNG Trill as seen in "The Host" and the later DS9 Trill. In "The Host," the symbiont completely over-writes what little personality is present in the host, which is treated a mere disposable body. The host humanoids also feature forehead ridges and no spots, and there's no taboo (at least as far as Odan is concerned) in pursuing romantic relations with a past host's lover (ie Dr. Crusher). Literally all of these things were changed for DS9, which is fine, but we should at least acknowledge it and try to offer in-universe explanations.
Also, as seen in "The Host," a non-Trill humanoid can temporarily serve as a host body for a short period of time before rejection sets in.

Initially i was stoked, its the kind of thing i thought wed be doing by now, but then i remembered the fact that we did almost completely wipe them out to make oil for lamps (petroleum saved the whales). So it occurs that if they do communicate in a way wed recognize with stories of what happened to them in the past going down generation to generation something like an oral tradition, we might not want to talk to them. Or we might here about a probe that should be making its way back to earth in a few years and when it hears what we did, it starts carpet bombing our cities and such with accelerated asteroids. They vast majority don't join, and most probably don't even apply, what with the "only 1-in-1000 are compatible" line. With that, only a few hundred are joined a year, so if anything, it's like the most prestigious university on the planet, a coveted achievement that very few have the opportunity to obtain.
The unjoined wouldn't be the contemptible underclass, because they're the common norm; instead, the rare joined are the exhaulted elites. The only attitude shown in the show is resentment towards the chosen, not disdain for the common.
Alternatively, think of billionaires. They pretty much all are heavily involved in charity and philanthropic efforts, and I can't think of many non-billionaires that wouldn't jump at the chance to be given a billion dollars; and yet, many resent them for various reasons. Much of this I think is from the behaviour of the ungrateful brat children that make the gossip rags, but this isn't something that would apply to the Trill, as you can't be born with a symbiote.
