it is 100% accurate..we drink not just to enjoy drinking, but also to celebrate friendship and camaraderie. To celebrate the bond that we have with our friends and or relatives.
100% accurate, the tagay culture (shared drinking glass) is still practiced at home or in community drinking activities, if you go to bars you will have to get separate glasses but are not necessarily forbidden to ask for a shot glass and pass it around. Pulutan is practiced even in the more westernized part of the country, you can see popular pulutan fares (e.g. sisig, tokwa’t baboy, liempo, etc.) in bars.
Kampai is borrowed from the Japanese, wherein Overseas Filipino Workers returning to the Philippines from Japan brought the practice from, but we also say “Cheers” or “Tagay”.
Pulutan is such an integral part of the Filipino drinking culture that whether you are in the remotest part of town or out into the biggest cities, there is always a place to get pulutan from. In fact, restaurants in cities (especially near the local offices and workplaces) that sells alcoholic drinks will always have something on the menu that can be considered pulutan, even if it does not really match the food they serve (e.g. Pork sisig on a restaurant that sells Fish and Chips.).
And the funny thing about pulutan is, in the most rural part of the country, they have their own cooked meat dish as their pulutan, while in the cities, even inside a bar, they have peanuts and some cornick snacks
I used to party with Filipino friends. The main drink at the parties would be Red Horse beer. Hard Ligure will be on the side if you want to participate. They would fill a class of ligure and a class of water to wash down the ligure. These two would be passed around with each person taking a drink of the ligure and the water and passing it on to the next person.
actually the act of Tagay is like the concept of drinking from the same cup. It is meant to signify that all in the drinking table are Sworn brothers.
There is even an old Filipino tribal warrior's saying that goes like "Never drink with your enemy".
If we drink together, It means that we're not enemies and we got each other's back.

One of the first things local chiefs (not yet called Filipino then) insisted on when Magellan and his men as the first Westerners arrived in the Philippines in 1521 was to drink with them. The Italian Pigafetta who made a detailed diary of the expedition wrote it down and was quite impressed by how they held their drink.

Oh it is verrrry accurate. LOL. Specially for “legit” drinking sessions, like occasions, etc. Also, one of the reasons for the “tagay” or sharing of the shot is to ensure that everyone is supposed to get the same amount of alcohol (e.g get intoxicated equally 😂).

This is actually very accurate. Every "Inuman" (drinking) session has at least 3-5 of those characters always present. Also, the century tuna x kanto cracker(usually skyflakes) combo isn't disgusting, it's actually very good! Try it and then tell us if it's disgusting haha.
It was a Canadian friend who introduced crackers and tuna in tin cans as pulutan, only he would mix tuna with Hellmann's mayo. It's really good, like you said. It seems it's not only Filipinos who do this.
@@innerspaceph we've tried variants of this and also tried putting mayo. Don't know the brand of the mayo you just said but of all the kinds of mayo me and my friends have tried we liked putting in spicy kewpie the best!

It is somewhat accurate i would say. what wasn't mentioned though was the "PATAK-PATAK". each one of the group has to contribute money for the drinks and food. the person who gives the least, or in some cases none at all, automatically becomes the RUNNER. 🤟
Oh yeah, this is true too....especially among friends. Patak-patak or going "dutch" to share the bill or come up with the total amount of collated money and then discuss how to fit the amount of cash so they can get the best drinks/booze and pulutan with what they have. Some may give more or less than others but that's cool too, a little goes a long way! If the drinking session happens at a bar, usually among friends, the total bill is divided among the number of people so all pay the same amount, especially on the night of a payday, after work is done. Hahaha
We Filipinos have honed our drinking sessions through centuries of fiestas and multitudes of various dinking sessions. Drinking sessions in the Philippines can last for days. The longest i attended was 3 days straight.
My husband falls to the ESCAPE ARTIST category. When he feels drunk and sleepy already, he would make the lame excuse of going to pee but he would go straight home. 😂😂😂.

It's true. That's the basics as they say 101. Generally, it is a practice in the Philippines consuming hard drinks. Those are unspoken rules especially the pulutan is not to be hoarded but to share

Since the pandemic, the gunner method has been modified a little. Instead of a glass being passed in a cycle, each drinker has their own glass to be refilled by the gunner every time.
Yep, this is accurate. Drinks, Food and Karaoke. In highly developed cities Karaoke might either be banned or have limited time but in the province Karaoke could sometimes happen throughout the drinking session.
Is it customary for everyone to be involved in karaoke, or just those who wish to?
@@Killermcknight you're not obligated to sing per se but it is a way of entertainment so might as well join in to the fun. (But most of Filipinos can sing and some of them are "very good" at it so you might be intimidated to try. However they won't judge you if you sung badly, more like they will tease you for it as a form of a friendly joke. I highly recommend to join though since it will be fun for both you and your company)
We usually have some karaoke singing games. Just like the tagay where there's one common glass passed around. We also did that with a microphone so everyone could take turns in singing each line in a single song.

And to the question when a foreigner or stranger gets invited to a local drinking group -- every local group most often than not drinking outside (front or backyards) invites anyone who is stranger who passes by, and yeah the rules apply to strangers too. You get to drink that one communal glass (though now a days some are considerate enough to give strangers especially the foreigners their own glass to drink from. To passerby they sometimes offer one drink saying "one for the road" - you get one shot and go on your way. Strangers can say no to the invites but it can be considered impolite to refuse, so just take a "one for the road" shot, say thank you and then high tail on your way quickly. Because if you delay your exit and talk to them -- you get invited to stay for the duration of the drinking session.

This is accurate. For the cup sharing, some areas are using their own cups but the tangero will still pour it for everyone and makes a toast before drinking to celebrate camaraderie. Food is always meant to be shared and never make the faux pas of picking the last piece.
i think it is pretty accurate .. that one glass that goes around is like what he said for those who stays and for the new people joining the session to get along while waiting for the glass and it is a good break after shots cause we do TAGAY usually with liquor ..

If you pass by group of people drinking, especially in the province, they will definitely offer you a shot or two. And pulutan ( food ) is a must. Different places use different alcohol. But the way they drink it is the same on the video.
Hi there, yep, this is pretty accurate, if you do visit the Philippines, and walk around populated neighborhoods on weekends, you'll most likely encounter a group of people drinking like that just outside their homes especially during celebrations. And they'll most likely ask you to have one drink. As for the food, there's pulutan, and then there are also go-to food after drinking, like goto (a rice porridge), pares (a combo of sweet savory beef stew served with fried rice, a clear beef soup, and a side sauce of chili oil, some calamansi and sometimes fried garlic chips), there's also Mami (a simple chinese noodle soup, usually beef or chicken).
There are a few more probably weird things, try looking for how to prepare gin drinks, a popular, cheap, and common gin here is Ginebra San Miguel, aka "Gin Bulag" which translates to "Gin Blind" because they say you'll go blind drinking that Gin. This gin is so popular that the different sizes have nicknames based on their bottle; Gin Bilog (Gin Round) for the smallest one in a small stubby round 350ml bottle, and the Quadro Kantos (roughly translates to "Four Corners" for the 700ml square bottom rectangular bottle, and I think some call it "Dos por Dos" (Translates to "two by two") because the square body is about 2inches by 2inches like the regular cut of wood,

Yep pretty standard. Though there are different categories of drinking. Like out in a bar or after school sessions. This is more of like in the house drinking. But other than that its pretty standard.
Though shown but it was not really been mentioned, is the second glass, Filipinos usually called it as the Chaser. It's ether be a cola or any sweet concoctions or just a plain cold water..

it is pretty accurate! one thing i have to say, more often than not the inuman is part of a celebration (like a birthday, wedding etc), so having rice while drinking is not exactly taboo. it is only on regular inuman where rice isn't readily available, or if the pulutan is limited. in my circle of friends, we always have rice available coz some of my friends might be just coming in from work or whatnot and haven't had dinner yet, so we make sure we have at least a little bit of rice available for them. dont want them to get too drunk too fast lol
also can't forget the videoke. regular music is boring, you gotta have something interactive.
This is definitely accurate, I’m usually the tanggero (gunner) and/or drunken master. 😅 As the gunner, you must also remember to put the same amount of drink for everyone every time the glass goes around.
One thing too, it’s frowned upon if you take your time with the glass (not drinking right away).. if you do this, you usually get heckled/harassed by your drinking buddies to hurry up.
Sometimes we have 2 gunners dealing out 2 different alcoholic drinks (in my case we usually do it with beer with one gunner and a hard liquor and chaser for the other gunner), and if you’re unlucky, you sometimes end up with both drinks during your turn. 😅
This is not exclusive to your family, friends or your group of people. Although, this happens only at the comfort of an exclusive area like home, small store, etc. It rarely happens in a bar. In ordinary bars, people usually go there to drink beers. Middle class bars usually have more offering like cocktails or even hard liquors but it's unusual to have a common glass. While it is common, the people will usually respect you as a foreigner and offer you a segregated glass.

Review on some more Bogart the Explorer videos, I love the Bogart in Syney or when Bogart interviewed Hugh Jackman. Bogart's not Aussie but he does emulate a great Aussie accent. I've been on a lot of drinking sessions with my Filipino friends when I was there. It's pretty accurate.

Communal drinking (tagay) with two shared glasses (one for the alcohol and the other for the chaser of choice) is a thing when we indulge in hard liquor. No one does this for beer, of course, but we often do this *with* beer, which is drunk in between shots. The thing is, since you're only getting shots after everyone has a turn, it paces the consumption nicely and lets the session last late into the night

Yes this is the style of Pinoy men the barkada or barkadahan dringking session when there is a time to drink. Or reunited again. With good pulutan ( a dish) like dinuguan, bopis, sisig, menudo, caldereta, grilled or lechon manok, lechon baboy, papaitan, BBQ, peanuts chicharon chips crackers.etc.. It is accurate. A couple of points to remember is that the only "group" that exist is an age group. Other than that, a drinking session could include anyone, and it could be very diverse. Anyone who wishes to drink can take a place at the table. Anyone. If you are a guest at a party or any occasion (there doesn't really need to be an occasion to hold these sessions), you will be invited to drink. If you sit, you would have to drink. Remember that they are using only one glass. Everyone is waiting for you to take the "shot" so don't hold the glass too long. Normally, drinking sessions are done on a table long enough for every participant to sit comfortably. Each one would have enough space to receive his "tagay" along with a "chaser" and space for a pack of cigarettes, a phone, or keys. Everything on the table is shared. Anything that's placed on top of it would be "free-for-all," not including cellphones and keys, of course. So don't put your pack of cigs on the table, especially if the others have ran out of smokes. 😁

there is something that I should add on this. There is actually another category of DRINKER that goes with several names. namely, the Teacher, the Scientist, preacher or the Political/sports Analyst.
