    Great tips for beginners like myself. Glad I found your channel. I learned so much this last couple of weeks. I'm now shooting in Manual Mode with Auto ISO. The biggest thing for me was finding out about that exposure meter and how to get it to zero. Before I didn't have a clue about that thing. Thanks so much.

    Great video. I shoot portraits and most of the time Manual mode is my go to mode as I want full creative control, but if I'm shooting at an event like a convention where I only have a brief time with each subject, I might use Aperture Priority (AV) to make things simple and make any adjustments as necessary. One mode I love on my Canon EOS RP is the new mode they introduced called Flexible Priority (FV), in which you start in full manual, but can switch aperture, shutter speed or ISO into auto at the flick of a switch. I'm training myself how to use that more now as it seems like a good mode that gives you the best of both worlds between full manual and priority modes at the flick of a switch. I have been doing photography for about 10+ years now and helping a friend to learn the ropes with manual mode & one thing I'm teaching him is whilst having a a low ISO for best quality, it's worth knowing when to bump it up in low light to get the shot, even if it introduces some noise as it's some times better to get a shot which has some degree of noise, but is usuable rather than not getting the shot at all.

    "You guys are living on Automatic Ave. Eventually you guys will be ready to move on Manual Rd." That's what our instructors used to say to us in AIT at Ft. Meade. Then I get out of the military, everyone is telling me to use full auto, lol.

    • @Nonduality
      @Nonduality Год назад +1

      I use full auto, but only if the values make sense. If they don't suit the scene, I make manual changes. So it's important to learn to do everything manually, but it may be possible to mostly rely on auto, depending on what you're doing.

    Great video, very informative. However I do wish that every camera had an 'Auto' mode & also lots of other modes like sports, landscape, night etc. I Have been dabbling with photography all my life really. Gone from having throwaway 110mm for gigs in the early 80s, disc cameras, 35mm throwaways, Konica Aiborg, Minolta Dynax 7xi, Canon T90, several digital compacts, Nikon D70 (which I thought was mega!), D90, D200, D300, D7000, D7100, D610, D750 and about a year ago I bought the Nikon D850 along with some VERY expensive lenses. I've never felt the need to 'learn' photography, point and shoot has always done a great job for me! For over 10 years I took photos of my ladies football team, results were mega in 'sport' mode, easily as good as professional pics you see. The D850 has no 'Auto' modes. I Have put off using the camera for almost a year because when I tried A, S, M modes the results were all over the place, to be frank pretty depressing. The last few weeks the weather has been very sunny here in England (but very cold!) I have been out with the camera. Got some mega photos in the midday sun, crystal clear bright blue skies which I love and unbelievable picture quality from the D850. But I wish there was an 'Auto' mode though, just to get some ideas about settings. Yes it is pretty easy to remember when you do a lot of shots in M but sometimes I dont want to be faffing around with settings. Surly it wouldn't of cost the manufacturer much money to include a normal 'Auto' mode, regardless of whether its a pro camera or not? I'd rather have it than video feature, its pointless to me, never once used it on an SLR camera. I Have been using Auto ISO on my M settings. Really happy with the results especially as I'm just learning M mode.

    I learned photography in the analog era (i.e. last century ;-) when you had to decide if you'd put a Kodachrome 25, Kodachrome 64 or an Ektachrome 200 or even 400 into your camera. Relying on Auto-ISO took some unlearning learned habits and your tips to actually depend on Auto-ISO is excellent. Another habit to unlearn was maximizing the subject in the viewer and instead to accept cropping as a tool (which was possible for negative film, but not for slide film).

      That is perhaps the greatest feature to digital photography. Gone are the days where you had to use up a roll of film before going on to photograph something which required a different film speed.

    Excellent video, Simon. You demystify and simplify the camera settings and how they work together so wonderfully that I feel I will be able to get the shots I want. Other instructors seemed to belabor that shutter speed is changed only to capture action and never discuss how it affects light-for beginners it can be confusing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

    I have an old Canon T2i (550d). So I'm wondering what is the most gentle mode for the sensor. What does wear a sensor down the most? I use this cmos-grandpa mostly for music video where all I need is blurry background, and I make photos just for fun. For example, when I set a long shutter speed for a photo (more than 1 second) is it exposing sensor to light and can burn some pixels? Or does it matter if in live mode sensor is always active? I'm assuming ISO does have nothing to do with the sensor pixels if it just amplifies the image, right?

      @simon_dentremont  6 месяцев назад +2

      No, the sensor doesn't have a shelf-life affected by use, other than pointing at the sun too long!

    Thank you so much for this tutorial.
    Being an amateur photographer means you are always learning.
    Quite often you can understand something singular but put into practice with other variables sometime make them confusing.
    Your tutorials in particular this one, helps understand the the singular and how it works in conjunction with its variables.
    Every now and then the penny drops and you see the big picture, it is so enlightening. Thank you for putting it all into perspective!

    Would love to see you go into more high level concepts in this area. For example, shooting an outdoor event like a wedding (or wildlife), while dealing with subjects moving in and out of shadows, changing from front to backlit, etc. Even stuff like making adjustments with given metadata in the viewfinder, particularly when it’s so bright out that looking at your photos on your lcd isn’t much of a help.

    I’ve only recently discovered you and started watching your backlog. I have a question I’m not sure if you addressed in another video.
    How well do your principles apply to bodies and lenses that do not have image stabilization, specifically when shooting free-hand?

    • @simon_dentremont
      @simon_dentremont  Год назад

      They mostly do, but with tweaks. You’ll need faster shutter speeds to freeze camera shake when you have no stabilization. The others settings don’t need to be tweaked as much (although you will need a higher iso when using faster shutter speeds. )
