  • STEAM - The London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) UK Archive
The London, Midland & Scottish Railway was the largest of the ‘big four’ railway companies formed in Britain in 1923 and consequently had the biggest fleet of steam locomotives. A major program of locomotive construction commenced immediately upon the formation of the L.M.S. which resulted in some of the best known types of steam engine - from the immortal ‘Black 5’s’ to the powerful ‘Princesses’ and Duchesses’.
In this video we see many of the survivors of these locomotive types in action on Britain’s main lines and preserved railways, together with views of them at work in British Railways' days of the 1950’s and 1960’s.
    Other locomotives featured include …
    - 41241 Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2T
    - 46443 Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0
    - 41708 Midland 1F 0-6-0T
    - 47357 ‘Jinty’ 0-6-0T
    - 45596 ‘Bahamas’ 4-6-0
    - 53808 7F 2-8-0
… as well as many others.
    Running time: Approx. 55 minutes.
    Original VHS release 1991

I too love that ‘clickety clack’ sound of the jointed track; it’s a pity they are disappearing so fast. 🐨🇦🇺

This takes me back. I remember standing on bridges as these magnificent machines passed underneath and I can almost smell the smoke, even now. 🐨🇦🇺

I noticed some sticky cylinder cocks. We (Steam Incorporated) had a bit of trouble with them when a set were made with toolmaker's tolerances. Nothing that couldn't be silenced on the road with a bit of percussion therapy.

Never forgave the Western for shutting down the S&D, what a tourist line it would be today.

About 80 year ago when I was under 10 I seem to recall train spotting when LMS and LNER trains passed through Sheffield. If only I could go back in time with my lost friends and train spot again.

The LNWR Webb 4' 6" 2-4-2's were reolaced by Ivatt 2MTs. The Aspinall Lancashire and Yorkshire class 5's and 6's worked until thw last days of steam around Bury, Bolton, Rochdale and Manchester Exchange/Victoria. Webb "Coal Tanks" Worked the llandudno junction to Almwch line, a single "coal Tank" with a driving cab only Push-Pull or a double headed "coal Tanks" "running round" a 2 coach set

I've especially done some research 'bout the L M S class 5MT black five steam locomotives; which certainly were the inspiration for Henry the Green Engine's rebuild over @ Crewe as this treatment for Henry followed his first crash while pulling the Flying Kipper due to some winter mishaps on the railway of a signal being forced down by some snow as well as a set of frozen points that sent him into the same siding as the waiting goods train when Henry has his collision with the goods train's brake van!
