I'm 63 yrs old and have lived in the UK my whole life. We didn't get the Carson show over here so thank you for introducing me to this marvellous entertainer!
Hilarious! I always loved when Johnny would desperately try to stiffle cracking up when the bit or impression was going south. God, do I ever miss watching Johnny every night! Thanks for all the years of laughter ❤
The Mighty Carson Arts Players. And the nightly live monologue were masterpieces of topicality. All I ever wanted to do in life was to be on the writing staff for The Monologue. I once interviewed Mel Tolkin, but that's the closest I ever got to my Dream Job. I asked him if I would improve my chances of hiring on if I changed my name to "Shlomo Hamamoto." Rest in peace, Johnny Carson.
I know, right? Mr. Carson seemed to drastically age as the show entered the 1970's and moved to California. Not just because he stopped dying his hair either. The stress of divorces and dealing with the Network must have taken their toll.
@@alpha-omega2362it happens literally all the time nowadays. All five late night hosts had a podcast together during the writers strike. Also both Kimmel and Fallon are constantly spoofing each other going on each others shows etc. If I’m honest I kinda wish it happened a bit less so it’d be a bit more special when it happens.
@@keefriff99 I’m not sure but if I had to guess I would assume they were not expecting the show to become what it was at the beginning, otherwise I’d imagine they’d pick a host more fitting to the types of guests they had
Sullivan was born in 1901. He came up through radio and vaudeville. He first did TV in the 1940s, when it was all very new. Those were the days when you had to make and develop connections to be in show business. You also had to be bland and uncontroversial. That’s what Sullivan did. But once he became famous, and had clout, he booked new acts, including women and blacks who no one else would book. Sullivan had to balance the network, the sponsors, the guests and the audience. Sometimes he didn’t get it right. Maybe he wasn’t “hip,” but millions tuned in. He was the right guy for the times, but those times changed. Hindsight is always 20/20.
@@garywagner2466 Thanks for the information. It’s always interesting to see those old school broadcasters like Jack Paar interact with the more modern days of television. Pasts last appearance on Letterman is a great example, he was not at all used to Davids personality as a host
I love these New York Era Highlights. I was born in 1968. LOL. Please release the 33 full episodes that are in existence with bumpers. LOL. I am dying to watch them. Mr. Carson was the best, and so is Mr. Sotzing!
I remember an episode of The Kopykats back in the 70's. All cast members were impressionists. On one show they all claimed to be Ed Sullivan -- and Sullivan came out from the wings.
Thanks. 😂 It’s really awesome to see his earlier clip. As time went on, I think Johnny got significantly better at impersonating him, and if I’m not mistaken, much, much later on, they did a similar bit together. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Be safe and enjoy your time with friends & family. I am thankful we had Johnny for all those glorious decades. 🥰
wasn't there a skit where Sullivan says "we're going to have a really big shoe...." and somebody walks out carrying a big shoe ...a really big shoe......lol
Many of Carsons early shows as well as many others shows are lost forever. Video tape was expensive when it first came out in the sixties and was frequently recorded over.
2 1/2 weeks after RFK's killing and the LAUGHTER IS BACK all over TV!!!! Not saying to BROOD for 100 years but how the entertainment world goes on and on!!!! Soon as I seen the YELLOW COLORED SHIRT I knew this was either 1968*1969*1970 and it IS 1968 JUNE!!!! CARSON allways with latest mens FASHIONS!!!
The weakest part of the Tonight Show with him is still better than the strongest part of any late night shows today on their best day!!! The bums on TV today couldn't carry Johnny Carson's jock strap!
Ed Sullivan was ridiculed by every comedian which is unfortunate - and Carson was furious when Rich Little did an imitation of him. In very poor taste.

My eyes were a little blurry, and I temporarily thought it said you KILLED your whole life, Lol...

Johnny was some trip and unique hilarious character😊

It's always a thrill to see pre-1970s, dark-haired Johnny!
They were still in New York. 😮
I know, right? Mr. Carson seemed to drastically age as the show entered the 1970's and moved to California. Not just because he stopped dying his hair either. The stress of divorces and dealing with the Network must have taken their toll.
Butte... that's Butte Montana........😂😂
I remember that set. Amazing this exists. Thanks Johnny Carson RUclips for locating and posting this. Wonderful.
yes, also considering that they were from different networks....NBC and CBS.....this kind of thing would never happen today.

love hearing Ed laughing in the background
Ed Sullivan or Ed McMahon? ,,,well anyway, he was Carson's built in laugh track....
*"Ha ha ha... YES!"*
Brilliant! Ed Sullivan doing his usual Richard Nixon impression😂
Ed Sullivan - the least hip guy introducing the hippest performers. Gotta love it
Serious question: how did he get to where he was?
It seems like everyone made fun of him for being a stiff, but he must have done something right.

Always loved "The Mighty Carson Art Players"!
Two of the giants. King of Sunday nights and the King of Late Night.
sullivan was so utterly unique. carson's doing a tribute and i only see ed playing along. more people will watch if they think ed's angry but....
Next week we'll have Conway Twitty, Bo Diddley, and Sandra Dee. That's Twitty, Diddley, Dee!
Hilarious! Love these clips from the NYC era. Beautiful MBC color. I’d love to see more entire episodes ❤

I really miss the days....
I grew up with this great stuff!
Sullivan was well-known for being a good-natured guy and loved impressions of him (sincerest form of flattery and all that)
I remember an episode of The Kopykats back in the 70's. All cast members were impressionists. On one show they all claimed to be Ed Sullivan -- and Sullivan came out from the wings.
Nah not really. Ask Jackie Mason.😮
Thanks. 😂 It’s really awesome to see his earlier clip. As time went on, I think Johnny got significantly better at impersonating him, and if I’m not mistaken, much, much later on, they did a similar bit together.

He did a good job
that was awesome.
I just lived TV history.
Lol, nicely done, and still funny, 55 years later.
That reminds me, I'm getting old.
The entire episode likely exists for this as it’s one day after 06/19:1968 show which I’ve seen in its entirety. Love to see this one as well.
Funny all these decades later I belong to both their channels on RUclips, Johnny's and Ed's. 😊
That is nice to see Ed Sullivan loosen up.
I thought he'd have the "Marine" make a quip about how "Ed" (Johnny) needed to loosen up his shoulders.
The good ol days

4:50 Johnny is about to crack up, I wonder if there was a blooper reel on this.
Lol 😆 🤣 😂 😅 😹 ThankYOU 4Sharing !!! ❤ 🕊 MuchLove!!!
.."Orphaned Elx.."..??..("shudders")..wunnnerful..!!
Classic! Lol
😂😂😂 I miss Johnny Carson and Ed Mcmahon.
Along with Ed promoting ALPO dog food.
Ed was cancelled in ‘71 without notice. 😢
Great clip!
Is there an air date?
If it really was the 20th anniversary, it would be June 20, 1968
Johnny doing a better Sullivan than Sullivan.😂
He acts like Ed Sullivan better than Ed Sullivan himself, I didn't know Johnny Carson was such a good impersonater
CueThE Marines!.
Funniest thing ed ever did.
Johnny was a truly funny and talented performer. There was Johnny and Jay, then all the others (wannabe Johnny’s)
Some of these young people don't even know who Johnny Carson is or the guy who laughs at all of his jokes.
5:56 audience booed at Johnny Carson that he’s not a talented Ed Sullivan impitation
Carson was the best. I’m glad I didn’t grow up in todays dumb asses.
The first act was a polish joke and nobody was offended. The good old days.
The weakest part of the Tonight Show with him is still better than the strongest part of any late night shows today on their best day!!! The bums on TV today couldn't carry Johnny Carson's jock strap!
Rose colored glasses.
Carson just seemed great because it was all new back then.
Now the stuff he did is just standard and common.
Ed Sullivan was ridiculed by every comedian which is unfortunate - and Carson was furious when Rich Little did an imitation of him. In very poor taste.
Oh no, is Ed Sullivan dead?
the bigger question is, was he ever alive?
Let god,Sort um out.
Jackie Mason did the funniest Sullivan impression 😅😊😅😂😅
Ironic that Carson did this impression but then hated Dana Carvey's impression of him.
lol clic bait title
The skits were always the weakest part of the show.
I hope you are being sarcastic, if not, you have rocks in your head...they were what made it a really big shoe......
Nope.
