Coming from a newspaper background in the 1930s, Sullivan had a difficult time accepting the change in music to rock and roll. He was pleasantly surprised to find Presley was a truly decent gentleman. The Beatles also were very courteous.
Not just Ed, that whole generation hated and even feared rock music.
All very interesting, but all I remember is sitting around with my family on Sunday nights with a bowl of popcorn watching The Ed Sullivan show! Great times!

It was pretty crazy having to watch a comedian’s stale jokes, a guy juggling plates, and Topo Gigo, with the whole family just go see the latest rock bands. And then my father would say “ what’s this shit”
Censorship was much stricter in those days. Language and attire were expected to follow the norms of the day. The Beatles' hair was considered to be long at the time, though it was only collar-length.

Sullivan was a sports and entertainment reporter and syndicated columnist who created and hosted the show.Same idea as the Oprah Show, or Ellen.
They didn't have cable/satellite tv back then so that's how millions got to see The Beatles,The Rolling Stones,The Kinks,and other big acts from England for the first time when the British Invasion started.
I loved it when Ed Sullivan said, "A Rilly Big Shoo Tonight." Seems he liked great one-liners.

I had no idea that Ed Sullivan suffered from a medical condition (ankylosing spondylitis) that made him look really unresponsive and stiff on stage. I do remember watching his show on Sunday nights. His show was considered a "must see" program. I loved it.👍😃❤️

I just watched the Doors performance on Ed Sullivan as it is available on RUclips. The story is generally true about being asked to change the lyric. Ray Manzerek says they volunteered to come up with an alternate lyric rather than the suggestion about "better." That, I believe, was from the Oliver Stone movie rather than real life. Also, Jim did NOT emphasize the lyric, but sang it normally, or even low key. This is why you don't do research by just watching the movie.

Well, Robby Krieger disagrees ! Said as far a he remembers it never happened. IIRC, he also said that they played another song on that same show AFTER 'LMF', but don't quite be on that one, I have tp see if I can find where I read it.

This is an Ed Sullivan bash….And unfairly paints Ed Sullivan as a fiend. If it weren’t for Ed Sullivan, we would have never experienced all of these wonderful performers / performances.
Come on, there were many such shows competing for the acts, and as was said here, Steve Allen had Elvis on first, and his ratings soared as a result! And Sullivan took second fiddle with the king. But everyone thought having Elvis the pelvis on TV was pornographic!

also, Morrison really didn't emphasize the word "higher" when they played this show. Oliver Stone took some liberties with The Doors movie and had Jim jump forward into the camera while emphasizing the word, which did not happen in real life, so maybe the narrator was getting the two confused

By the way, they performed on the show an additional song, “people are strange”….So it was not like Ed Sullivan was so outraged he threw them off the show and they had four minutes to spare because there was no other act. They performed two songs on the show. And that’s right, Oliver stone exaggerated how Jim Morrison sang the song on Ed Sullivan

And according to the massive Bob Spitz biography of the Beatles, the Beatles had been *huge* fans of Elvis ever since Elvis broke, as had most of the world. (They had seen Elvis movies in England.) When the Beatles came to America for the first time and checked into their suite, the telegram from Elvis had been placed where it would be noticed, taped to a piece of poster-board with a ribbon on it. One of them said, "It's a message from Elvis!" and John, being his usual jocular self, replied "Elvis who"?
It was Frank Sinatra whom the Beatles snubbed, probably due to Frank wisecracking earlier that the Beatles weren't fit to sing in public. False move, Frank. Years later Frank called "Something" one of the most beautiful love songs ever written, but I don't know whether he saved face or not.

The Beatles wouldn't have appeared at all for just exposure and neither would have anyone else. Really! Would anyone cross the ocean to appear on a show and pay their expenses for exposure? @@theartofflipping They were paid. Dave Clark wouldn't have appeared for " exposure". Neither did anyone else. The Beatles were paid more of course because of Brian Epstein. Dave Clark was the manager of the DC5. He wouldn't have appeared as many times as he did for exposure only. And Sullivan's show wouldn't have lasted for years if the performers weren't paid. The other shows paid the performers. Why would Sullivan not???
Probably the most significant aspect of Elvis's performance on the show is the Sullivan team stipulated had to be filmed from the waist up . This is common knowledge . Odd you left that out
From what I've heard, that incident with Elvis's performance only being shown from the waist up occurred on his THIRD appearance on Ed Sullivan's program, and it wasn't even Sullivan who introduced Elvis on that particular night, because he, Sullivan, was sick at the time, so actor Charles Laughton had to fill in for him. It was LAUGHTON who brought Elvis Presley out on the stage for his "above the waist" act.
Ever notice that the back up singers looked down at Elvis when he sang to make it appear he was doing something controversial? They played that very well. Most got disappointed when they saw him live. Great publicity stunt
I recall vividly when the Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan show. What I remember most that separated this act from others, was that the girls in the audience were doing the screaming, jumping, hand shaking and head twisting gestures their British counterparts had done when being filmed at Beatle concerts in Great Britain. I'd never seen that before in American audiences when American acts were being performed. I thought at the time it was either phony because they'd been paid or that they'd imported fans from Great Britain to the audience in the States.

@@FactsVerse My diversity for old time TV is rather limited. I was one of those kind of kids that went in more for exploration/scientific style shows like "You asked for It" or "Mr. Wizard" or "The modern Farmer". my siblings liked the cartoons, TV Cop like the Highway Patrol and Cowboy series, Hopalong Cassidy", "the Lone Ranger", "Roy Rogers & Dale Evans", Sky King" and the "Tales of the Texas Rangers".
They did the same for Elvis on the Sullivan show and that was several years before the Beatles.
The bobby-soxers were screaming over Frank Sinatra twenty years earlier, so America had no need to import rabid fans for any popular act.
My guess would be that this was New York...the kids had advance knowledge about them that the rest of us didn't. (the airport reception indicates that)

What was offensive about "Oh Boy" by Buddy Holly and the Crickets? Certainly a G rated song.
In the 1950s it would have been considered suggestive. People then didn’t openly talk about desire or lots of other things.

A frequent guest of Ed Sullivan was juggler and plate spinner Kumar Pallana who already in his mid-sixties began a second show business career as a film actor in the films of Wes Anderson, who "discovered" him at his Dallas coffee shop. Pallana appeared in Wes Anderson films Bottle Rocket, The Royal Tannenbaums, and The Darjeeling Limited, among others, until his death at age 94.
Ed was so awkward presenting acts that it seems like he never rehearsed that part. He insisted on the guest to show him their performances before the show. I was always embarrassed when he had foreign entertainers on and screwed up introductions. I never understood why he wasn’t replaced. The show was a hit but it could have continued without him. I was 10 years old when the Beatles first appeared. My parents were strict and i wasn’t allowed to watch them, but their music was on the radio a lot.
Wish I could see more of the stuff being told instead of just hearing of it.
I'll never forget Gabe Kaplan doing an imitation of Ed Sullivan doing a Topo Gigio introduction on the Tonight Show in 1973! It wasn't even censored at the time, but it was when NBC reran it a couple months later!!

Memories ! As a kid my parents couldn't afford a color TV, so when we heard the Beatles were going to be on the Sullivan show, we went to our grandparents house, because they had a color television. We were so disappointed because the program aired in black and white.

I don't think very many families had color TV's yet in 1964. Most shows were still in B&W. New shows that came out in September of 1964 were still in B&W, such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E. which was top rated right in its 1st year. 1965 / 1966 I believe was the big change when color TV's became common.

There's an episode in the 3rd season where he goes undercover as a musician in Greenwich Village , NY ! It's a satire on the whole underground beatnick culture. He shows off his music / vocal talents a little in a very funny way ! He's an amazing talent and glad he's still alive.
Well if you were around back then you would remember that almost all 'older people' couldn't stand the new rock music but Ed would have them on every week and would tease the teens in the audience, introduce the bands with a smile or with enthusiasm.
Morrison wasn't being defiant. He was just a bit stoned and forgot to change the lyric when they went on.
That's what Manzarek claimed in an attempt to smooth things over. If you watch the performance Morrison clearly knew what he was doing. He put an emphasis on "higher" that usually wasn't there.
As others have pointed out, the "indecent exposure" claim against Jim Morrison refers to a March 1, 1969 performance at Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami Florida, not New Haven CT. This was the only Doors' performance that drew this kind of headline.
Ed was like patriachy personified. You didnt mess with him. Im surprised Jackie actually gave him the finger. I think he was a genuine tough guy, I heard he might have been a boxer, maybe an Irish temper. He was an institution. He was the guy.

The acts were "paid" money, scale to be on the show. My dad performed on the show when it was called Toast of the town. He knew the producer of the show Marlo Lewis, and Ed. And the agent that booked the variety acts, Mark Leddy. My dad did two different spots on a single show and was paid twice. I suggest you do some research.

I really enjoyed this video alot . The Ed Sullivan show is legendary . Some things need to be cleared up , 1. Jimmy Fallon was never lead singer of The DOORS . 2.. Jim never exposed himself in New Haven Connecticut , that happened in Florida , " allegedly" . That was never proven . In Connecticut, Jim was arrested on stage for nearly inciting a riot for calling out the police , after they sprayed him with mace back stage before the show .

Having AS myself, remembering Ed Sullivan shows I watched as a kid made me think that (even if he didn't have AS) he obviously had some form of arthritis affecting his spine and neck. The one thing that really me think was that Mr. Sullivan seemed not to be in pain, which without modern medicines to control the disease made me suspect that he was on a large amount of pain killers, which were widely available during his time, just so that he could walk, having such a medical condition in such an advanced stage. Not saying I know he was using pain killers, but it's highly probable. Now that doctors are loathed to prescribe pain killers, without modern meds controlling my AS, I would be unable to walk and in a wheelchair by now. So, it seems a logical conclusion.

Morrison didn't emphasize the line. Val Kilmer did in Oliver Stone's "The Doors", but Morrison really didn't. Not a "fact".
You would expect that the Stones do not agree to change the word of THEIR own song, but they did. Respect to Dylan and Morrison who didn't accept.

Yes, I remember this Sullivan Show from the 60s. I remember the Beatles, the Animals, the Doors but I don't remember Elvis and I don't remember any of the animal acts that they showed on the show. Jackie Mason had problems with Ed and yes Ed was very stiff. Comedians made jokes about Ed's stiffness.

thats how it was back then. you gotta pay to get in the rock and roll hall of fame. so it is still going on.
The payoff was in the record sales. Kids would see a band or singer they like then run out and buy the 45s & albums. If you made it to ES show, you were pretty much guaranteed to sell loads of records, that’s why bands and their agents were chomping the bit to play “for free”.

I totally realize that kind of exposure would be hugely beneficial for record sales but it's extremely unfair that the show makes gazillions off ad revenue and doesn't pay the star attractions. Any band that was good enough to make the ES show would have toiled for years perfecting their craft. Good on Brian Epstein ( I assume) on insisting that the Lads were paid.

Sullivan wanted the Stones to change "Let's Spend The Night Together" to "Let's Spend Some Time Together", toning down the message for any parents who might have been viewing. Interestingly enough, many parents disapproved of The Beatles because of their long hair and tight pants - until they got a taste of the Stones. After that, parents approved of the "clean cut" Beatles instead of those "scary" Stones.
This stuff is taking me back to those times...Dean Martin famously rolled his eyes and made insulting jokes about The Stones when they were on his show. (Probably felt threatened by the new wave of youngsters taking over. Kinda sad.)
@@jeffclement2468 I hate to be picky, but the show that Dean Martin was hosting with the Stones as guests was not his own self-titled one. He was guest-hosting "The Hollywood Palace", a somewhat blatant Sullivan rip-off, IMHO. However, I heard this hosting job played at least a small part in getting him his own show.
The Beatles really couldn't say yes or no. That was of course something Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager negotiated.

Interesting that you’d sneak in a clip of Jimmy Fallen performing a Doors parody song “Reading Rainbow” among the actual Doors footage. Mistake or intentional? I’m guessing it was a mistake.
I think it was intentional. Some intern was probably asked to find clips of the Doors and came across the Jimmy Fallon one. Being young and not too much of an expert of the Doors, he/she likely intentionally submitted the clip, but did not know it was a mistake.

One more not mentioned: when Sullivan heard about country Joes “ gimme an f… gimme a u .. song, he cancelled him and paid him not to appear. And Bo Diddeley not playing a song Sullivan requested got him banned

While Ed Sullivan did go ahead and book Elvis, he gave strict instructions to the cameramen to only show him from the waist up.
Grew up on the tail end of the Sullivan show. He seemed very uncool to me, even as a 5 year old. This video doesn't really change that impression.
I think it was because of Ed Sullivan's flaws that people liked him. His awkward movements and belching between sentences. He was hilarious. It's going to be a "Really Big Shoe" was funny every time I heard it. The act I remember the most is when the Beatles performed in 1964. That was amazing. The British Invasion had begun! And we have not been the same since.

Just be aware that Ed Sullivan was in hospital recovering from a car crash when Elvis P first appeared on the E.S Show. The host that night was British actor, Charles Laughton who first intro'd Elvis (September 1956).
He was a product of his times,closed minded not willing to change I'm 66 my mind has not ossified,which I'm proud tosay: still open to the new, but I don't like rap ,vi can deal with hip hop I prefer song lyrics that are positive in their message.

You made a huge mistake! The Door’s Jim Morrison did not expose himself in New Haven! It was Miami in 1969. He was indeed arrested in New Haven in 1967 but it was for something totally different…it was for arguing with a police man. He ended up getting maced for disrespecting a police man and after the performance he was arrested

According to his band mates, in the books they wrote, Jim never actually exposed himself on stage anyway. He might have given the illusion that he did while performing but that was it.
