Diary of a Lonely Man - Post Apocalyptic Short Film - Canon HV40

- A 10 minute short film I made for university. It follows a man before and after an event that wipes out the human race. I was inspired to make this by films such as I Am Legend, 28 Days Later, Omega Man and The Quite Earth.
I tried put a few elements of Mise en scène into the film. For example:
1. Lots of shots of trees and bushes covering buildings, I wanted to suggest that nature was about to "re-take" the planet. This is also why the geese are flying from right to left as if they are returning to what was once theirs.
2. The main character often shares shots with bins and rubbish. I did this to suggest that before his turning point he and his life wasn't worth much.
3. The random bee about half way through and his visit to the football stadium is the characters turning point (bee's are often considered to represent life) in which he now excepts his new world and life. The following shots all suggest his acceptance with nature taking back the earth, the fact he only enters the city once again at the very end reinforces this.
4. After he leaves the ally way the traffic lights from then on are all green. This is to suggest that from that point on the character is free to do what he wants (because he's the last man on earth), even if he doesn't realise it yet.
Please comment (keep it constructive) and rate, thanks for watching.
Shot in Birmingham City Centre, Sutton Park and Walsall Football Stadium. It was filmed using a Canon HV40, Canon 43mm Wide Angle Lens, Rode Video Microphone and edited using Final Cut Studio.
This kind of apocalypse would be easy for an introvert like me. I'm practically living the apocalypse already!
Me , too !
If it weren't for the company of my beloved Border Collie, Gust'l ...
I'd be entirely alone ! ::)))
@@brooksequine7621 XD XD
@@brooksequine7621 I need a doggo!
@@samsmusichub : You do !
They always make the last man standing scenario seem so terrible but never mention that everything at the marinas, bars, and adult stores are free. I'd be fishin, jet skiing, sailing etc, etc, etc.
This reminded me of the 2017 film called Bokeh about a couple on holiday in Iceland. They wake up one morning to find that there are no people anywhere and go on to discover that it's the same everywhere else in the world. I'd recommend it.
This short was so sad. I really felt for that man.
.....“I'd rather be alone on a desert island than in a crowd.“
I'm glad someone finally asked me this. Yeah, basically we met in Birmingham at 6am, two Sundays in a row. You're right it isn't that deserted all the time. We had to get the shooting done before 7am before it's just too busy to get the empty shots needed. Each shot you see took at least two attempts before it was perfect. A car driving past, a person/group of people or a plane flying over were just some of the problems. People out from the night before made up most of people about at that time
All we need is food to eat, a safe place to sleep, clothes on our back and something wholesome and simple to engage our minds. The rest is shit. You probably weren't even going with such a dark yet enlightening theme, but here you are. I loved it for all the things others didn't see and based on your commentary in the below, you weren't even going for it. Pure, stark story with layers even beyond your intention. Loved it.
From reading your comment I assume you either already know about the following three "beings" or if not, I think you would benefit from looking into their "teachings": ruclips.net/video/pf7ZePNuus0/видео.html
I liked it. I think all of us feel the loneliness even in everyday life surrounded by people.
I could well learn to like that life. I’ve always been alone. I would get a fast sports car, teach myself to fly a helicopter, drive a train, go to the CIA headquarters and find out all the secrets kept from the public, many things to do and a short time to do them.
Charles , flying a helicopter is extraordinarily difficult . I know from experience . If you crash , which the chances are high , you'll lay there and suffer alot .
Okay ... kins of like riding a horse when you don't know what you are doing ....
I retract my statement .... fly away ! ::)))
Ummmm , if you teach yourself to fly a helicopter , you shall probably DIE .
Hovering is so very difficult and deadly. I know. I tried to learn it properly !
But NOTHING is better in life than flying over the ocean at night with open doors !
I know it’s not the point but that is one tidy apocalypse
This is not post apocaliptic any longer . It's today's REALITY !!
Ooo ooo the smell, can’t you smell the smell, the smell of bodies around you!
Good photography. As a city man he clearly feels the pain of losing all the people, but he makes a symbolic journey back to the land, even if it is only his allotment. A very good effort I'd say.
Very British. Most post-apocalyptic shorts involve some American with a Russian gas mask walking towards a routine set piece with a gun battle.
After Covid 19 pandemic disease that movie become almost real. First of all in Northern Italy. Greetings from here.
why is he looking for the familar when he knows it isn't there any more.
i'd be making myself very comfortable in a university engineering library, and enjoying the hell out of making stuff with all the neat tools in the engineering department shops. well, hand tools anyway, until i could rig up some solar and wind and storage system.
i doubt i'd be eating much meat, but growing plenty of stuff in the greenhouses and fields.
Touching and sad. Thankyou for the Upload.
Reminds me of the award-winning but forgotten book "Empty World" by John Christopher. He was the greatest author of post apoc in my view, but Hollywood first stole his ideas and then eclipsed him from human memory.
I am worried though by the lack of evidence that this man tried to find other humans, some kind of search by radio or car before accepting the introvert's solution. He does have a nice vegetable garden going for the future but he needs to make sure there is no mother left for re-population, before lying down like that.
This is exactly what’s like to be lonely, the brain works just like that. Everything is quiet, empty inside of you and you get the same perspective of the outside world
At which point does the human race get wiped out? I'm not sure it's supposed to be obvious, apart from hinting at where there's no people, but I couldn't pinpoint it? Maybe when he's drinking in the alley and we hear the siren, but I'm not positive it is...?
I was thinking that he'd probably passed out in the alley the night before, woke up hungover and was still drinking the remains of his last drink. It might have taken him a while to work out something has happened to the population as he's waiting for a bus, dressed in what seems to be office clothes!?
I would be lonely too if took me that long to realize I was the only person around. Clicking off at 6 min still waiting for ANYTHING to happen:(:(
Great to.see all the familiar scenery. Im from Birmimgham
I got the sense that this was in the early stages of "the end". From my own perspective I gathered that whatever caused this situation took the vast majority of humanity but there may be other survivors far and in between different parts of the world and that this was only one of the only few instances left of humanity... make sense, Chris? again, its only my take on it...
Very good, Chris - I liked it.
☝️😎
Just subscribed from NYC thumbs up
I’d head to Lake Meade . Electricity will be on for a long time.
Great cinematography!
Interesting wee film good job❤
I liked this. The shots were interesting. We as humans really require very little to survive. I would think if a catastrophe did happen, this is what people would do, leave the big cities and let them pass away. Well produced, simply written and well acted.
Thank you. That is a real HOPE FOR HUMANITY vibe.
Interesting. How did you keep all the people away while you were filming? I thought only police and big movie studios could do that. Also where was he so that he escaped annililation?
It was v early in the morning!!!!
At least he didn’t have to watch a boring soccer match.
im currently doing moving image at college and about to start my second year and got directed to this video by a friend of yours and the way you use still shots in the film and intertwine them all with the characters story is quite beautiful i learnt a lot from this
i really really liked it, and sadly found and read all the mise en cine before watching the video......but see, i liked it because it was profound. everything was shot beautifully and the way that he tries to stay "normal" by leaving his ponytail in in the begginning and letting his hair loose in the end was another example :D
Bravo! 👍👍
That's how I hope to do it if the time comes.
End-of-the-world movies never even mention the biggest problems a person would be facing. For example, every single nuclear reactor on Earth would melt down and explode as soon as they hit groundwater, with the radioactive fallout being completely uncontained and blowing freely. The entire Earth would be radiated within months. Since the power is somehow still on, you'd also be having constant electrical fires, which would turn every city on Earth into a firestorm. There are a hundred other disasters like this which would all be happening at once. Your single survivor would be dead a dozen times over within a year.
Quiet Earth.
@DirectorBlack yh i do notice especially in a lot of Scorsese and Shane Meadows film that they have the camera constantly moving or have a nice floating effect, in the 2 films ive made so far ive focused to heavily on the story so the next step is to improve camera technique but for your film the camera technique matches the story very well
Random but it's nice to hear a Birmingham accent on a youtube video and see Birmingham lol (my home town)
" for me it would be a dream come true... "the whole population extinct ...I would love it "seriously.!!
Good stuff man, I liked it. I do have one question though. If the human race has been wiped out why was the electricity still running in that building he went through?
Cheers mate. As I understand it, if everyone suddenly disappeared, the power would remain on from anywhere to 24-72 hours afterwards. This is when emergency and automated systems would shut the power down.
O.K., gotcha. I was under the impression that this was a few weeks after the Apocalypse. That's why I was confused. Thanks for the response.
thanks…
did he lock the door at the allotment?
I saw the Stadium scene as the reflection of all the people. As the seen where Neville goes to the theatre to watch Woodstock in Omega Man.
6:24 Fernando Torres in a post apocalyptic world
It's amazing how neat and tidy the post apocalyptic world is. Who cleaned up the battlefield so the guy can have all those pristine landscapes to ponder?
this is fantastic to be honest, you capture the feeling really well
Caught a little realism for a second , I think , no its gone.
Eventually it will be up but it has to do the festival circuit first will put up behind the scenes stuff, hoping it will be awesome, only 2 zombies, a cottage in the middle of nowhere and a plane, can't wait to get stuck in
Finally, something filmed in my city! :)
He finally gets a goal or purpose near the end of the short. Plot becomes hopeful. setting and scenery good , props outstanding. transition was a bit obscured.
did you use multiple cameras or just one?
It was a long time ago but I think I got a Merit (B, in alphabetic grading).
@DirectorBlack No worries and Ryan Forknall suggested it to me a little while back so ive finally managed to get round to watching it, but yh after watching this i think i can see its unecessary to incorporate to many movements with the camera so im sure this will benefit me in the next few years cheers.
Hi,I think to buy this Canon HV40, did you use some program to "eliminate" the people? Or it was just a lucky day without them in the streets? Sorry if it's very obvious, but I'm a begginer
Bummer. No more futbol. EVER. Worse than when Burgess Meredith dropped his glasses in that library...
However, no more greens fees. EVER.
Nev er in my wildest imagination, ever wish that on anyone.
A peaceful existence. Could be worse.😊
Techie question...could I get the same film look from an HV20? Christmas is coming up and the parents are kinda short on cash, but I'm in desperate need of a good HD camera with filmic look.
Kind of looks like Albany, NY on a weekend,- (or for the 5 mos of winter, or any day after 8pm).No wonder they started shooting films here .
If you entertain such fantasies, highly recommended,- plenty of empty real estate.
Nicely shot. But what became of all those pesky, disgusting ,bodies?
Really different, melancholy, but not freaking.......
Ha great don't know what it is but I love that shot, in pre production of a post apocalyptic zombie short myself hoping to mimic at least 1 shot from that film
28 Days Later? You should have used the DM-XL2E. I still sell them.
Ah, I see. I got them from the audio editing programme Soundtrack Pro. Part of Final Cut Studio.
the acting is good fellow.
At about 5:38 was that shot a mimic of a shot from dawn of the dead?
One page of the diary...
Äusserst interessant und sehr beeindruckend
Loved it! I have an HV40 too. it really is an amazing camera. Im about to order the WD-H43 wide angle lens for mine
Well done.
What special effects are you referring to?
Enjoyed this.
Really interesting style I really love that short film keep doing stuff
Great! Really good work!
British accent?
what grade did you get?
Just one camera, a Canon HV40.
Well it is as advertised
....actually, he looks better off. Lol.
muy buena producción, gracias. pero que pena que el universo escogió a un hombre domesticado por el sistema como sobreviviente, tantas cosas que hacer y el no puede salirse de su corral...
"Wipes out the human race" ???, where are the dead bodies? How long has this sole individual been alone? Where & how did he find food to eat, water to drink?...left unattended, electric power would be no more, no gas for cooking, heating, let alone fuel for automobiles. He is clean shaven, where did he find razors to be as this...freshly laundered clothes also. Too many questions & zero answers, fail.
the intent
I don;t watch films that start with sex, somebody brushing their teeth, or a phone ringing.
thanks man and nice video
nice video sir..
What??
This guy is facing bigger problems than simply being lonely.
Freaky!
6:24 Torres
thanks for upload, tho I thought it was boring :)
Typical. The last man has a Brummie accent 😉
A Bee Sounded like Newcastle to me
?
Reminds us also of the ironic Twilight Zone episode en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_Enough_at_Last
Maradona
n8 is beeteer
This is the most boring last man in the planet, short "film" I have ever seen. In response to spikedart, at least Burgess Meredith played a nasty old guy that made me glad he broke his glasses. This is some random guy who just exists and you don't care one way or another if he lives or dies.
Started with NOTHING.
Ended with SAME.
Even score I suppose.
Net Gain = ZERO.
Why bother?!?
10:52 lost from my life I'll never get back.
For SHAME!
On ME I suppose.
Overnout
H ? The one difference? A change in state of mind. Something that would do you well.
A big nothing. Nothing happens. This is the most boring film I have ever seen. A waste of time!
All these people that like films like this baffle me. I thought I was the only one.
Thanks for your comment. We're ok.
