Fun interview. I especially liked the part where Alex casually mentioned how he could put 3 hours into Lael in a 200 race … just destroy her on any event 10 hrs or less … but she beat him by days on the TD. Some folks don’t need much sleep … others gotta have it. I also liked the part of the interview where Alex said he cranked out 200+ watts for like 10 hrs on paved roads in New Mexico … and pulled back 6 hrs on other riders. “Just keeping that rear wheel moving” is a big challenge on the Tour Divide. Great interview!
Sweet interview. At the midway point of the race Alex caught up with me and the first thing I thought was, "why in the world was Alex Howes behind me?" I'm just a regular 50 year old guy who works behind a computer and who has never really seriously raced bikes. And the only racing I have done is DH and enduro. He was super laid back, chatted with me for a few moments and slowly rode away never to be seen again. This was in the middle of the Great Basin, in the midst of insane headwinds, so that grand tour bike fit of his paid off there! I finished 2 days behind him but I had zero mechanicals and very even pacing.

I could not handle the wild swings of uneven pacing other than for climbs and 0 cadence descending.
Alex is primed for success. Well done. He's a good sport and his fans wish him much success.
Things overlooked is a second pair of dry bibs and socks. Those 2 things when you change them out are the most satisfying thing on long trips/events..
Funny it’s the 1st thing I was told for super long/ultra rides. 2nd pair of bibs & socks. So when I did my little 24 hour ride I had that naturally
100%! I Had 2 pairs of both and couldn't imagine going without
I like how he mentions 12hrs rides as being regular, no big deal, casual, STANDARD rides
Great description of how ultra distance cycling positions are not the same as a normal position.
Also I would LOVE to have a list of his gear/apparel… like the gloves & BADASS rain jacket he mentioned
spicy enough
