    Great to see you in DCS. I have just got back into it big time and still learning the Hornet. Have just bought the F16 in the sale. Would love to see more of this. What did you use to record your takepff replay? That was really good.

      For the takeoff / replays, I just used DCS’ “track” / recording mode. I replayed the track and then used Shadowplay to record.

      Thanks very much, Anthony! I’d love to make more DCS content but, alas, there doesn’t seem to be all that much appetite for it (I’m sure I’ll still visit the sim from time to time though). . .
      So far as commentary goes: I record my vocals separately from the video recording (using Audacity) and then edit the 2 tracks together.

    Great video. I'm a (long) retired RAF FJ pilot (I flew Tornado F3s on 5 and 29(F) Sqns before they closed on those) and flying instructor on Hawks (I predate Tim Davies in the instructor role at Valley by a fair few years) and play mostly in DCS. I've got MSFS but never got on as well with it and only really use it for some training with the local Air Cadet Sqn. I'd be more than happy to talk through or fly coop sometime on those points you were discussing. Do you have either the C101 or MB339? Both would make a great two seat trainer for this sort of thing (I prefer the MB339, as the C101 is a little underpowered). Academic range work was always a fun, but challenging sortie. In no particular order, you would often set up things like depression/xwind/sight settings on the ground but normally master arm would come live in a safe place, and in a safe direction if carrying forward firing stores (arming points, or on the runway). Basically with live weapons, always assume that something bad might happen any time you apply power to a weapon/firing circuit so only do it when it's as safe as it can be. You'd normally call to join the range stating what patterns you were going to fly, and whether dry or hot. Unless carrying out an FRA (first run attack) you'd normally fly at least one 'dry' pass to assess the actual wind vs the planned forecast. Set the aircraft trim for your final attack speed while on the transit and try to leave it there. Weapons would be set once on the range with any final late arm if you have it once lined up with the target (when you call 'C/S, In Hot' and wait for range clearance). 5000ft is a little low for 30deg dive, as you found out. In the Hawk we used 8000ft for academic 30deg dive and 2000ft for 10deg dive. Make the first part of your turn level until within 30deg of the target and then overbank and bring the top of the sight glass to just below and then up the target so the aiming mark approaches it from below (that would help you with getting the wings level). Assess your dive angle and adjust (8K would give you one chance to adjust your 'wire'). All your dives were shallow (a 'low wire') on this one but releasing late/close reduced the errors a bit. Wings level recovery (and call 'C/S, Off') to a climbing attitude before turning. Depending on the range, you may call 'C/S, Downwind' with info on your next pass if it's changing. There should be a depression setting somewhere for low angle strafe in the F5 rather than using the A-A sight (it's a while since I have flown it). Switches checked safe before leaving the range (and radio call). I've just joined your Discord (Burrito) so more than happy to move any chat or Qs there.       Whilst I’m not au fait with the technical details, having watched the video back, I came to the same conclusions re my dive profile. I did look up some dive tables for the F-5 online, but from one table to the next, the numbers seemed to be all over the place haha (bar the shallow dive, I was flying the numbers for entry / release as per the table I was using). It sounds like 5,000ft was a bit “ambitious” and in hindsight, I guess I was rolling in too far away from the target also.
      Anyway, I love the idea of running through some of this stuff in more detail / with a seasoned professional and I’m sure that would make for a great video! Thank you very much for your kind offer. Due to work, family, RUclips commitments etc, trying to organise any sort of collab is always tricky, but I’ll get in touch with you on Discord when I can and we can go from there.

    Very nice, sir!
    A little trick for you in the Tiger. You can actually cross bleed when you're starting up. If you start the first engine, and disconnect the air. If you throttle up to about 65% you will see the second engine RPM increase, you can press the start switch as normal etc and it will start, no need to switch the air unit over.
    Also, I always set it to left side on the fuel imbalance switch, as a quirk of the F-5 is that it always starts off with an imbalance.
    Say 'pickle' when you release the bomb, and a successful attack is followed by a 'shack' 😁

      - I was aware of the crossbreed start, but I figured an air start would be nicer for anyone stood behind me ; )
      - I did set the fuel balance switch, but only once airborne (I figured one perhaps might not want the balancing taking place during the takeoff, but I have no idea what the best practice is - I always used to set the switch on the ground, in the past).
      - I thought the correct term was “pickle”, but I wasn’t 100% sure and didn’t want to be constantly saying the wrong thing and sounding like a numpty XD

      Yes, 'pickle' is for a bomb drop. 'Magnum' is a HARM, 'Rifle' is a Maverick, 'Fox 1' for semi-active missile, 'Fox 2' for IR missile, 'Fox 3' for an active missile. 😁

    The F-5 is really fun.. I love the super-ergonomic cockpit (for its time)
    Don´t forget to check out the best feature of DCS: TUNNELS.. you can run the Mig21 through the Roki-Bordertunnel in Georgia or the Christen Eagle II through a ton of fun tunnels.

    Great to see you back in DCS. Nice flying as always. A few pointers, trim the plane for the bomb run speed, never attack from the same course, as you saw your self, do not attack into the sun. Do longer extensions after you drop your payload, a good rule of thumb is to extend to 10 nM from the target. During roll in, keep your eyes on the target, roll so that the lift vector of your plane is towards the target. The F-5 is a nice plane, however, it is an old module. I would like to see you fly the A-10C II Tank killer. One of the best modules in DCS.

    Awesome Flight! I tried the F-5 in A/G Bombing missions too but it seems that the reticle depression is now broken. If i put the reticle mode in manual an put the depression to 80 ithe pipper stuck in position and doesnt move. It could be a bug but i dont know what to do anymore. Is there something i missed? its so annoying....

      The reticle can be adjusted to have either a positive and negative depression. I suspect, if you operate the rotary in the opposite direction, you will be able to get the depression you’re looking for?

    Question about bf109 g6 on Microsoft flight do you know how to fix the plane I have all damages turned off yet my 109 has oil spilled All over the windshield spits smoke and engine failing I think it might be a glitch

      Have you checked the maintenance page and made sure you don’t have any outstanding maintenance issues? Even with damage turned off, any systems that were previously damaged, will still present themselves if not fixed up. The issue could otherwise be a bug, as I’ve had a few similar comments from other viewers, but I haven’t experienced this problem myself.

    So cool! Thanks for that. I live near RAF Donna Nook a military range. I know that when aircraft depart the range atc ask them to "confirm switches safe" so I'm guessing they don't arm them until on the range. Great video!

    (From a simpilots perspective) As for the weapons arming and such: Usually you define a combat zone and entering this zone would be "FENCE IN" and equally exiting it would be "FENCE OUT" this is usually the point where you check your fuel/ lights and arm your weapons(weapon setup checks are usually done on the ground since some changes have to be made on the ordinance itself). In additon if you are starting a run you would announce that you are "IN" + the direction you are approaching from "IN (from the) NORTH" and once your run is finished "OUT (to the) SOUTH" a dumb (unguided) bomb release would be called out by "PICKLE" and a gun run by "GUNS GUNS". There are many lists on the internet that contain "BREVITY" (the lingo) that might give you in depth information on all the callouts.       FENCE is also a useful acronym for things to check: fuel, engines, navigation, countermesures, emissions. emissions in this case is radar, radio and lights anything that comes out your aircraft that could be detected by an enemy. of course dont forget master arm too but thats kinda a given

    Nice flight, the F5 is an awesome little plane! You try out the A4, that’s a fun little plane also and it’s free. Try the computer lob bombing on then A4 and also the radalt on it makes Mk82HD bombing at 200’ agl great fun. The F5 could definitely benefit from a radalt. Awesome video though!

    Are you using VAICOM Pro? Or just using key commands in sync with the dialog?
    If you're going to dive into DCS deep, you might look into the VNAO T-45 Goshawk mod and A-4E-C Community A-4 mod. The Goshawk should be a good way to learn/practice carrier operations, and I gather the A-4E mod is now very good.

      Funnily enough BushWookie, I’ve long thought it would be fun to do something along those lines, either with FJP or CG Aviator. These sorts of things aren’t always the easiest to organise though and of course the other guy would have to agree to it, but I would love to learn from the professionals, how this sort of thing really ought to be done.

    One bit of advice I'll give you. Don't wait till you're on the runway to extend the gear. Chose your moment tactically, extended the gear at the optimum moment to look cool, right as you taxi past someone else on the field. You'll look like the coolest guy out there!
    On a more serious note, good stuff! Very much enjoyed. I'm certainly no expert, but it felt to me like you got a little close on the gun runs, I'd be a little scared of frag, from what I've seen of others doing this, I think it's more usual to fire from a little further out, and pull off a little sooner. With that said, what you did certainly worked, and hey, if it aint broke don't fix it.

      Indeed Reaper, DCS is a cracking sim. It’s the only sim that really replicates the awesomeness of these sorts of machines - I often get genuine goosebumps, if someone carries out a low-level flyby whilst I’m in VR haha. I owned a copy of the original Lock On also, having tried it on some sort of static sim display at a careers event ha.

    Wow! Your aim is really great! It's so refreshing to see someone come into DCS from a flight simulator background, since it's the same background I had when I joined DCS.
    The main downside of DCS is it's lack of missions, you might want to look into DCS Liberation, it's a custom dynamic campaign generator where you select a map, two opposing countries, game settings, and then the squadrons, and the program will automatically make flights, you may also choose your own flights and your allie's flights as well.
    DCS is one of those simulators where you truly never stop learning even after a thousand hours into it.
    You might also want to look into the in-game "kneeboard", that's where you'll find the IFR charts for each airport on the map.
    Although the ATC is currently limited, (they're working on an update right now) IFR arrivals are still doable, and the charts help a lot.
    Finally, there's a program called Tacview which helps you review your flights after you've landed.
    DCS Liberation along with Tacview will help you constantly improve as a military pilot.

      I shall definitely look into DCS Liberation as I 100% agree, the sim is rather lacking in terms of missions currently (though I do very much enjoy some of the available 3rd party campaigns). I’m pretty familiar with the kneeboard, but tried not to use it during the video, just to avoid breaking the immersion haha. Tacview is a good tool also; I’ve used the program once or twice previously and it could certainly add something to my learning, if not the videos also.

    Great video. I've never flown the F-5 but that won't stop me from offering a debriefing. I think your dive angle was too shallow, more like 20 degrees, but you compensated in the only way possible, by releasing your bombs at a dangerously low altitude. That was pretty much the correct picture for high drag bombs or napalm, but I personally wouldn't want a 500 lb slick bomb going off under me at that height. Also, you pressed a bit on your strafing runs. There were people on the ground throwing rocks at you. Still, not bad for a trash-hauler but I wouldn't quit my day job just yet.

      I completely agree with you re the dive angle and noticed the same thing when watching the video back. I think I was turning in on the target from too great of a distance and having to shallow up the dive as a result. Presumably, dropping from 1,500ft is still “safe”, as that is one of the release height options from the dive tables, but it is probably a bit more of a close shave than one would ideally like. The gun runs were just for a bit of fun. As I mentioned in the video, I wasn’t aiming for anything realistic there ; )
      Haha, I won’t be quitting the day job just yet, no worries. This sort of stuff is a lot more fun than flying an ILS though : P

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations There is one important similarity, though, between dive bombing and an ILS (or anything else in flying, as you well know). If you're not correctly set up at the roll-in point or at the final approach fix, you're much more likely to make a balls of it.

    Awesome! I'm always one of those nerds (coming from FSX and MSFS) that want's to do proper procedures at and around the aerodromes... something that seems to be frowned upon in the DCS community :D

      That's wrong, there are some amazing Milsim groups running huge campaigns in DCS, way more involved than usual.

      From my experience on DCS servers, it seems to be all or nothing. People are either very rigorous with their procedures, or going full afterburner straight into a hangar, as soon as they have the aircraft fired up XD

    Thank-you sir for sharing this video with us. This is Guerry from the States.I was very impressed with all the graphics and bombing, and especially with the camera view of the falling bomb. Before I share with you my experiences with speaking to close air support and its lingo, let me share some inaccuracies I detected in the video.
    The things I found somewhat inaccurate with the simulated F-5 by no means would distract me from the fun I would have flying it. If I am wrong, I would appreciate anyone correcting me. During your taxi for takeoff att 07:07, there was quite of bit of left wingtip fluttering as if it was shaking due to bumps in the pavement. During takeoff, the bomb racks were shaking at 08:58. From my experience with getting to explore jet fighter aircraft, the wings and bomb racks are so tightly fitted to the aircraft that it seems as if they were welded together. There was no play with any part of the aircraft’s external components whatsoever. Furthermore, during your turns enroute to the bombing range, I did not see the magnetic compass rotate. Again, if I am wrong, I am more than happy to have a smart guy correct me on my observations.
    As for speaking with pilots making the run, my experience has been as an observer directing the pilots to the target. I am retired from the US Army from serving both an enlisted and commissioned career. During my career, I spent much time serving in our US Army Airborne Ranger units (similar to your SAS), and I had the privilege of calling in close air support on bombing ranges and in combat. There was a difference when dealing with our Air Force, and Navy/Marine pilots in that I spoke with an Air Force O-2 spotting aircraft who directed the attack, but with the Navy/Marines, I spoke directly with the pilots. Essentially, plain English conversation was the norm, and it was not much different than giving driving directions to someone. This is the gist of how we communicated with pilots (about 30 or 40 years ago).
    When initially contacting the pilot: “’Hotdog Red’” (pilot’s call sign) this is ‘Ranger SNAFU’ (my call sign), how are you doing? I’ve got about 15 to 20 tanks on the road about 300 meters south of that tan looking spot on the hill, located at (give latitude and longitude). They are moving at around 10 MPH towards the east on the road. They are kicking up a lot of dust; do you see them? Your best direction of attack is towards the south”
    The pilot would respond whether he made identification with the target or not. If not, you give further guidance.
    Once the pilot turned to make his run, you give him the final OK for the attack: “Hotdog Red, you are ‘CLEAR-HOT’!” (‘Clear-hot’ are the magic words for friendly forces being safe from the bomb’s exploding radius, and the bombs hitting the target.)
    BOOM!; with a pretty fireworks display. After the attack, you boosted the pilots ego with how well he did (or liee if you had to): “’Hotdog Red’ this is ‘Ranger SNAFU’, GREAT JOB! I see at least 10 tanks on fire, 4 damaged, and the rest making an immediate U turn for other parts of the globe except here. Thank-you and have a great day.”

      Like yourself, I can’t really specifically attest to the accuracy of the DCS F-5; as you could probably tell from the video, I’m not nearly as clued up when it comes to military aviation haha (although I would certainly like to be). All I do know, is that the aircraft is great fun in DCS and has long been one of my favourites.

      PS, it’s interesting that you have to communicate with the Air Force guys via an O-2; it seems like it would significantly increase the time taken to communicate the plan and potentially lead to more details being lost in translation?

    why not fly on a less ugly map? There was a massive sale like a week ago, lots of really good maps. Caucuses is pretty meh.

      I thought it was the law in DCS, that if you’re going to practice dropping ordinance, it has to be done at the little airfield outside of Batumi? : P
      The primary reason I went for the Caucuses, is that I already had the scenario set up, but I’m sure I’ll explore other maps in future videos.
