I was flying a F4 and hit the key to show the outside of the phantom. Then I hit the gear down button because I was getting ready to land. She says in a little girls voice "Oh look, his little wheels came down" ok you can leave now.... She just laughed.

Good video! Used to be an F-5 instructor, many moons ago. Dont forget to switch to use auto balance on the fuel. Traffic pattern, shoot for 180 kts on downwind rollout, gear, flaps, off the perch. On speed to touchdown. Nosewheel hike is only used for initial takeoff. Drag chute for full stop landings. Really enjoyed your commentary, brought back great memories and chipped a little rust off! :o)

I wish I could fly around the pattern with you in another F-5. But I suppose there are several dozen others here that would want to do that, too. Get about 4 jets in the closed pattern at once, online. Even have someone as a tower controller. May sound dull but I'd enjoy it. What if there was a non-combat server where we can just fly realistic training flights, no horsing around or goofing off. No wild weapon usage. Maybe another mission where we get 4 jets and do a simple bombing pattern on a target range with Mk-82's. Just practice manual bombing, in the F-5. A squadron of F-5's. With some doing cross-country flights, some doing pattern work, some doing BFM and some doing an A/G practice pattern. Flights coming and going from the same base for a few hours, one day a month or so. I haven't done online flying. Maybe you can organize a virtual TFTS. Do they still call them that?

Great Vid, The only thing that i can say is i don't know how you recorded it but with oculus inside of the oculus installation folder, under \Support\oculus-diagnostics There is a OculusMirror.exe that replicate what you see. if after that you create a shortcut on desktop and under target you add ' --Size 1920 1080' (without the ' ') it will render with a greater quality.

    • @johnbrown9181
      @johnbrown9181 5 лет назад +2

@@AdmiralQuality No, the image is rendered at the exact same resolution regardless of the mirror settings.
Think of it like adjusting the resolution of a livestream (ignoring the extra power used to encode the video) - the game is always rendered at the same resolution, it's just resized differently before being shown on the PC screen.
Here's how rendering a frame on the Rift works:
      * The game asks the Oculus runtime how large the undistorted screen size is (due to the geometry of the lenses, the game has to render an image larger than the actual screen resolution. users can also increase this value in a process called 'supersampling')
      * The game draws the image at that resolution
      * The game sends the image to the Oculus runtime
      * The Oculus runtime applies ATW, ASW/ASW2 and PTW. These are all techniques to make the game look smoother when it's running slowly. This is a major component in preventing users from getting motion sick.
      * If the mirror is running, it sends a copy of this image to the mirror, which then resizes the image depending on the input arguments. This is ridiculously fast, and not worth caring about from a performance standpoint.
      * The Oculus runtime applies something call distortion. The lenses concentrate more of the user's vision onto the centre of the screen (making text look shaper there, which is normally where users will be looking), while using less pixels to fill in the peripheries. If the runtime sent the image straight to the screen, everything would be bunched up in the centre. To correct for this, the runtime pulls the centre out and squishes the outsides before sending it to the screen.
      > I assume anyway, I don't think VR is quite ready for prime-time yet
For simulator enthusiasts, it absolutely is IMO. I can't imagine dogfighting in DCS without VR - I'd compare it to the difference between flying with a PS4 controller and a proper joystick.
The Rift S is relatively cheap (for headsets at least), is very easy to set up and use, and has good quality optics.
      > and even when it is, I'm not sure how I'll keep from knocking my beer off my desk. ;)
You can place it a bit further away, and double-tap a button on the Rift S's controller to go into 'passthough+' mode, where you can see your surroundings without taking the headset off.

    • @johnbrown9181
      @johnbrown9181 5 лет назад

      @@AdmiralQuality
      > I thought everyone recommends not using ASW because it's a post processing pan/tilt effect meant to mitigate unsatisfactory frame rates and doesn't work well with DCS.
Some people do, I personally prefer leaving it on, especially for low-level stuff. Otherwise the terrain will only move every second frame, which I personally dislike more than the artefacts you get from ASW.
      > It lets your viewing angle have a higher frame rate than the rest of the world, which is just nutty.
      That's ATW.
ATW (asynchronous timewarp) takes the last frame and moves it around inside your headset when the game doesn't have the next frame ready in time. I'm not sure you can turn this off, and you certainly don't want to.
In most VR videos, the view looks really shaky (less so when sitting down for flight sims, but it's still there). It doesn't look shaky in VR because the images are moving around to account for that.
If you then somehow run without ASW, those vibrations will start to feel present in VR, and will quickly cause many people to get motion sick. Every time you move your head, the image will "stick" for a moment before moving, and it looks horrible.
ASW (asynchronous spacewarp) is about capturing movement during these missed frames. Rather than displaying the previous frame as rendered by the game, it will look at the last several frames and guess where the objects are going. If for the last three frames a tree has been moving to the right by around 10 pixels, ASW will move that tree 10 pixels forwards in the generated frame (it does this using the MP4 compression hardware on your GPU, which does something similar to reduce the filesize of videos).
This is of course not perfect, and some people strongly dislike the artefacts and thus turn it off.
      > Definitely agree about not ready for prime time!
Have you seen the Oculus Quest? It's probably not *quite* there, but it's closer than any headset before it.

The Virpil base's are compatible with Thrustmaster grips and they make Russian HOTAS grips if you ever wanted a SU-27 or MIG-29 grip. Thrustmaster stick's internals is just a plastic cup sitting on a plastic ball(with a little grease) with a Hall Sensor, if something breaks its not designed for 'user servicing' but Virpil base's for Thrustmasters grip are, and it has cams, springs and bearing the feed back you get from it is better, you can also change the cams and springs. I can't recommend Virpil enough. Thrustmasters makes great products, but Virpil is so much better. Last get 'Voice Attack' its a program that lets you 'talk' to what ever program you set it up for, windows, email, your web browser. There are several Voice Attack profiles on DCS forums, and its not that hard to use. You can request clearance's, turn on the batteries, change TACAN's, radio's etc. I would love to see you making more DCS videos, thanks for these videos.

I bailed on my WARTHOG HOTAS and switched to Virpil completely. HUGE difference in accuracy.
The Thrustmaster Grip was way more comfortable. Will probably mount a F-18 stick on the base in the near future.

@@Bananimal65 I ditched my Warthog for Virpil to. My complaints about the throttle are, I bought it too soon, I want the 'CM' version, and lastly, the range of motion on the throttle is alot shorter than a Warthog. So I made an extension for my Virpil Throttle. If you have access to a 3D printer here is the link www.thingiverse.com/thing:3652489 . As for the F/A-18 grip, I'm just waiting on the 25 of July myself.

You will need a decent pc (gtx 1060, equivalent or higher), a flight stick (i‘m still using an old microsoft force feedback, but i‘m looking for a better one) and a lot of patience. You will first need to reassign several controls and get familiar with all the assignments, which might take you a few hours. Choosing your starter plane is a hard choice and it really depends on which kind of plane you want to fly (older, or more modern planes, dogfighting or air to ground planes etc. ). When i started, i chose the f15c (decent dogfighter, easy to fly, no clickable switcher). At first i‘d recommend just to do some free flights, take offs and landings, to get a feeling for the plane. Now comes the more complicated part. You will need to learn how to use the systems and weapons of the plane. And this (especially the radar) really takes some days to get used to. There are a lot of youtube tutorials about this, and watching these is about the best way of learning it. Later you can learn about dogfighting maneuvers and tactics, and then you‘ve successfully jumped into the game. This whole process takes about 2 weeks, but in the end, its absolutely worth it.

DCS is amazing and worth your time if you love doing that pilot stuff, but it's definitely demanding on your PC hardware and it will seriously hamper your enjoyment unless you have a higher end PC that meets the minimum specs on Eagle Dynamics's website. The higher spec you can go, the better the performance and your experience. In addition to Mover's notes, there are also mid-fidelity aircraft like the F-15C and MIG-29 that are not as intimidating to learn but still fun as hell to fly.
Other things that hugely add to the experience but not absolutely necessary (in order of value added):
HOTAS as opposed to just a flight stick (those extra buttons and hat switches beat reaching for the keyboard)
TrackIR / VR / some other version of head tracking (night and day difference in terms of situational awareness and looking in the cockpits of study-sim planes like A-10 and F/A-18)
Rudder pedals (not as important but still very nice, especially for helicopter)

Found this info on a reddit post - cross bleed airflow from one engine to another starts automatically at 70 percent throttle and upwards. you just need to go ahead and select ignition and power it up, no need for ground crew to connect to second engine..
Is there a way to start the right engine on the F-5 without ground air supply?
So during the cold start tutorial, it mentions you can use air from the left engine to provide the initial spool to start the right engine instead of re-applying ground air, but I can't find a way in-game to do this. I've tried googling it, but with no joy - anyone had any luck with this?

Crossbleed starts work exactly as described in the real flight manual. Advance left engine RPM to 95% for adequate airflow, hit the right ignition switch, and put the right throttle into IDLE at 10% right engine RPM. There is no bleed air switch, because the crossbleed valve is primed automatically once 70% RPM is reached on the left engine. The right engine start button opens the valve, and away it goes. Very simple.

You don't need to cross feed or split the throttles, it has a fuel tank bias switch right near the cross feed switches and outboard of the fuel pump switches.
Maybe that functionality was ommitted on the T38 for a reason?
