Awesome is right. Two thumbs up to the men and women of the Navy and Marines. I'm always stunned by how young the people are and how competent. But then I served in the Air Force many moons ago and watched 18 to 21 year olds like me maintain and service and even operate things like B-52s and ICBMs.
    We're in good hands.

There is an error in the launch info. At launch, the pilot has his right hand on the front bow handle and the left hand is on the throttles with a lock lever that won't allow the throttles to move backward at launch. No pilot would be shot off with his hand NOT on the throttles. Another thing not mentioned was that after an arrested landing or missed approach, the pilot goes to full power, not AB. It is a strange feeling to go to full power when you feel the wire. But if it breaks or any other malfunction the plane is powered up and can make a missed approach with no hesitation. One of the sickest feelings is sitting in the cockpit facing outboard and not being able to see anything but water! I flew the F-4B and when we air to air refueled, if you approached the basket too slowly it would move away from the probe because of the nose cone wake. So there was a moment when you had to be going towards the basket a little faster than was comfortable or you would not plug in. Fun exciting times!

I knew a guy that flew F/A18’s and he told me they wanted to see both hands off because the F/A 18 was flown by computer for the first twenty seconds on carrier takeoff due to pilots overcompensating and going into power oscillation. (His words) I could be wrong.

Not many pilots chime in the comments. You should write more and describe your experiences like you did up there. I’d love to read it! F4? Were you a pilot in Vietnam? I work with a guy who was on one of the first flights into desert storm. He was a boom operator in the Air Force. He has a ton of fun stories! I love aviation but too many pilots will use terms and words that average people can’t follow. Feel free to share more stories man! Thank you for your service as well.

America's experience with aircraft carrier ops goes back to 1922 with the U.S.S. Langley. We have 102 years of experience with the logistics. And China? Not that long.

Why doesn’t the military link 4 flat-top ships together to make an Aircraft Carrier twice as wide and twice as long. They could be separated to pass through the Panama or Suez Canal…

I don't think carriers altered anything in WW1....the first aircraft carrier was HMS Argus, which was never deployed in that war.
