I hope this video gives you a good grounding as you think about where you want to start in the Cold War era in DCS. For those that are also looking into peripherals, I would like to recommend VKB's Gladiator NXT Joystick because of it is modular and you can add more to it. This breaks up the purchases you need to do and it makes it more bite size while still letting you use, imo, a top tier stick. Use Coupon Code: Enigma for a 5% discount on their online store. vkbcontrollers.com/?product_cat=gladiator-nxt-series I do not get any kick back from this, so it is nice they were willing to partner so I hope this is not seen as a shill but a real genuine endorsement.
I do not play DCS since 5 or 6 month (my pc broke) and i'm interested in your server, but I only have FC3 and i'm planing to get thr F/A-18 to play on a big french server (I'm Luxembourgish so french is my firt language) so, Is there any dogfighter from FC3 (like the Mig-29A) that are accepted on your server, or only the older Su-25 and A-10A ?
@@arthurc.5805 Mig-29 has to be earned using points from doing missions and sorties. And if you manage to get it and get shot down, well you get start over on the points. They don't want the f-14 and mig29 dominating the servers.
Thank you for these. I've not had the courage to hop into the server yet as I'm still very new to ANY flight sim, let alone DCS... but this helps me focus my practice.
I have just been getting going in DCS after building up to it for literally like a year, and I had a Thurstmaster T16000M stick and the TWCS throttle for some other stuff and I was looking around the internet for a few days and decided to grab on of the VKB NXT Evo sticks like 90 minutes ago. That thing seems to be very highly recommended and it isn't that much more than the T16000M to buy.
That’s a great overview of these modules. It’s funny how the Tomcat fits perfectly with the others in terms of timeline, but how it absolutely dominates everything else unless heavily restricted. Says a lot about what a fantastic design it was.
I don't know if you can really say it fits in the timeline. The 21 is a design from the early 50's and the 5E while technically being a design from the 70's is a budget export model upgrade of a design from the late 50's. Meanwhile the tomcat is a new design from the late 60's.
@@jimmydesouza4375 The variants that are modeled in DCS, i.e., the MiG-21bis, F-5E and F-14A all became initially operational at almost the same time circa 1972, so by that measure I'd say they fit the timeline pretty well. If you want to find other good Soviet contemporaries in that timeframe that aren't yet modeled in DCS, the MiG-25P and MiG-23M, both were IOC ~1973. Regardless, I think the F-14A still stacks up well and stands apart due to it's AWG-9 and AIM-54 weapon system.
I genuinely wish the F-5E was not abandoned by ED. Where are the art updates teased last year? Why is the throttle scheduling still broken? The navigation suite? Furthermore, why doesn't the F-5E3 have an air refueling probe, which was a standard export option? The F-5 is my daily driver, I love it, but come on... given the popularity, can't they dedicate at least ONE person to fixing it? Great video, cheers!
I did what most people recommend NOT to do - the MiG-21 was my first module. To those on the fence about getting the MiG-21 because of its reputation for being difficult to fly - I'll echo what Enigma states here. It IS a challenging aircraft to fly, but it's actually quite straightforward once you learn the flight envelope. Once you do learn how to fly within that envelope (and when you can push it) the MiG-21 is an absolute joy to fly, and fully capable of holding its own even against more modern planes, when flown to its strengths.
My main problem with getting either the MiG-21bis or the F-5 is that both modules are fairly notorious for being so old that many of their systems were implemented in hacky ways and just don't work like the real thing (MiG-21bis sight being a commonly mentioned example). If those issues get fixed with the rounds of upgrades that are supposed to be coming for both then I'll reconsider them, but until then I'm happy with my Viggen.
@@jubuttib Fair enough. I can say that done quite a bit of delving into the open-source material available for the MiG-21 (technical documents, flight manuals, first-hand pilot accounts, etc) and IMHO as a new guy, many of the complaints seem a little bit overblown. Some of them are from game states that existed as much as six or seven years ago now, and have been quietly fixed in the intervening years, but still show up in search engines. Other complaints are perfectly valid, but they're relatively minor unless you're looking for an excrutiatingly accurate representation of the aircraft. From what I can tell, the major ones are the RSBN/PRMG systems not working as intended, the SAU/autopilot being incomplete/inaccurate, some aspects of the flight model related to buffet and stall behaviour, and the radar and gunsight having a mix of too much and too little capability. Don't get me wrong, I very much want a version that is as close as humanly possible to the real thing. But if my choice was between a module that's only 85% accurate, vs no module at all, I'll take the one that's imperfect but still immensely fun and satisfying to fly. YMMV, of course. I'm a bit of a MiG fanboy so I'm just happy to have something available at all. If you're someone who prioritizes absolute fidelity to the real article, then maybe its worth waiting for the 2.0 version of the MiG-21 that we'll hopefully get once Mag 3 releases the Corsair. But if you'd like something unique and fun to fly, I heartily recommend the MiG-21. I am quite biased, admittedly. But its BY FAR my favorite module to fly, even though I own a whole bunch of others.
Either get the beginner module that's "easy"to learn or get the one you love enough that it will keep you motivated to learn. Awakening you inner nerd is a powerful thing. 😅
The Mi-24 is, to my mind, the best module in DCS- not just cold war, in DCS period. While it isn't as hyper-capable as something like the hornet, or even the apache or hokum, it's a very effective striker when flown well. It's also just an easy helo to learn, IMO, it's surprisingly ergonomic for a Soviet design from the 70s and there's not much you have to learn to be effective in it, especially if you use Petrovich as your front seater (though having a buddy fly up front is really fun, too). Focusing in just on ECW, I believe the Mi-8 is actually the more effective red helo just because of the way troop drops work, but it's a more difficult to learn helo IMO, and you're forced into a bit tighter of a niche compared to the hind. Seriously though, if anyone watching this has any interest in DCS helos at all, pick up the hind. It fucking rules. I fly modern way more than cold war nowadays and I still fly the hind most in DCS.
The Hind is legendary! As far as helos go it can do everything! Cargo, troop transport, anti tank missiles, anti helo/low flyers, bombs, rockets, and even cluster bombs(nice variety of everything too, not just one weapon of each type). It has a massive 30mm cannon that can take out even tanks, and a gyro sight to get your munitions on target. On top of everything it is hands down the toughest helo in DCS(and helos are all glass cannons in DCS). Its pretty much impervious to small arms fire. Its a no brainer if you want a helo.
I have to say that I agree with your opinion on the MiG-21. Before DCS I knew nothing about military aviation, only having flight time on an amazing 737 mod for X-Plane 11. When I first started looking for an aircraft to buy, I decided that the MiG-21 looked the meanest out of all available modules at the time, and I bought it based on appearances alone (ok, and maybe because it was the only high fidelity supersonic redfor jet). I honestly just followed the manual procedures word by word and slowly learned to fly it. I never faced any difficulties with it, except maybe remembering some procedures. I believe the only reason people find it "difficult" and "trying to kill you" is simply because they have experience flying aircraft without many limitations on usage (such as not pulling certain easily achievable Gs, or flying below certain speeds at certain altitudes) and with more ergonomic cockpits (the 21's navigation equipment are all over the place). It may also be a placebo effect. When you hear everywhere that the 21 is a difficult plane, the smallest difficulty you stumble upon simply reaffirms what everyone else claims. The MiG-21 is a lovely aircraft that has simply been misunderstood. Please do not let the opinion of others influence yours, or you might just miss out on something wonderful. Give it a try with the now available free 2 weeks trial, and form your own opinion.
When the F-4E comes out I would like to hear your thoughts on the module and it's cold war applications. I know the E has a gun but it was still a Fox-1 and Fox-2 fighter at heart.
I am absolutely excited for the F-4E but it's going to be in a weird place until the Mig-23 is in. It's going to be a massive advantage for blue if it's unrestricted with sparrows. It's going to be able to cruise high, the WSO and its very powerful radar for the time is going to have excellent visibility and long range. Now red would actually have a chance if everyone wasn't automatically spotted and reported to overlord. Using the Mig-21 as low flyer doing pop up attacks like in the Vietnam war would be a very cool dynamic.
Gladiator NXT evo stick is my current stick. It's the best bang for buck, given the ability to customize springs some button and hat switches (with a little bit of work). The early models did have springs that were a little brittle (broke after about 500 hours) but they did come with replacements, and VKB has seemed to fixed this problem in later batches with more durable springs. It is IMO great for just the shear amount of hat switches and buttons available.
2-3 years ago I would have said that the Logitech 3D Pro was the best bang for the buck stick. When I got my Gladiator it took less than 10 seconds to change my mind. I used it with Thrustmaster TWC throttle and that combo served me well until I fell into the Virpil rabbit hole.
@@MrHrannsi this is the same setup I've used for months now. VKB Gladiator and TWCS Throttle. I still enjoy the setup. I'm not sure if there really is a better throttle right now is there? TWCS has so many buttons and hats that I can't find a replacement.
I love the MiG21. I agree about the FC3 package, it is a lot of bang for the buck. It was literally one of my first DCS purchases, but I shied away from it because if the low fidelity, big mistake the Flanker is amazing. I for one have been eagerly awaiting the Flogger, and was very happy to hear about the F-4. Great video and I find myself being drawn more & more to the Cold War era scenarios. Thank for making the video.
This was cool. The cold war had some absolute dogs of war. I would love to see them add E.E.Ls, F-8s, A-7s, The entire Century Series, Mirage III family. Too many attack craft missing to mention but, the Buccaneer would be at the top of my list to add.
In 5-6 years time, we might get all of those - F-4 and A-6 by Heatblur - F-8 by Leatherneck - A-7 by Flying Iron - Mig-23 from Razbam And recently announced were the Kfir and Super Sabre
Oh my goodness, the E.E.L. I love that plane so much, I've been flying the MiG-21bis as a replacement (similar quirks and role) but having that plane be implemented would be amazing!
I have a weird nostalgia for the F-86 because I grew up in the Midwest, with it out in front of the EAA in Oshkosh. It's hard to recommend though, because it's so weak. But if you're patient with getting shot down a lot, it can be a lot of fun, especially if you focus on hunting helicopters. My ultimate faves are definitely the mig-21 and mi-8. Both require some taming with a bit of a leaning curve. But they are extremely rewarding in capabilities once you master them. The 8 might be a big school bus looking thing, but... You can overload it with troops, guns, rockets, and have door gunners. All at the same time, provided you can get off the ground. So much fun.
@@cardona54321 she lands fast. Keep her above 400 on your base turn and only use take off flaps until we’ll established on final. Let her get to slow and she’ll drop out of the sky
@@UkDave3856 sorry I was just wondering what degrees the take off flap settings is set to? Is it 25 degrees? Im wanting to set a keybind for it on my hotas. Thanks
The hind, the uh1 and especially the mi8 are just pure bliss. I do love fa18's and f16's, but it's more due to the fact that using their systems are satisfying. With these helos, the flying experience is all that matters, and they smash everything out of the water on that front (in my opinion). So satisfying to pull off a smooth flight with a smooth landing in some hot LZ or to precisely maneuver the helicopter to gun down targets (ohh boy the 30mm gun on the hind is amazing to use). Best flying experience across every plane of every simulator I've tried.
Don't forget the A-4 and OV-10 Bronco mods. These mods are excellent aircraft, fun to flow and a lot of fun to fly against period correct Redfor. (And until we get the A-7, we really need a light strike option).
@@RossOneEyed The A4 mod breaks the integrity check. So I have to needlessly faff around when I switch servers. Im at the age where. I dont want to faff around.
The Viggen is, for whatever reason, by best A2A module. Even in modern servers lol. Feels like a single seater F4 Phantom, and i like to fight jet-fights like I'm in a warbird, stay fast, so that works quite well in the Viggen. Stay above mach 1 and do high jojos like you are high
Couldn't agree more with the VKB plug!!! I bought mine outright and I think its easily the best joystick with twist grip out there. The button count, resolution, and bang for 💸 really sets this apart in a big way. Def check them out if your on the fence with spending $500 or a $1000. VKB is a fantastic option.
I really love my vkb gladiator premium! it's an amazing stick for the money. Very precise too... I had to remove the palm rest pad to fit my large hand but it's not bad now (Im 6 foot 5 for reference)
I use the VKB Gladiator stick, VKB pedals, and the TWCS Throttle. Are there any throttles you suggest to upgrade from that? It has so many hats and buttons that it's hard to replace. Wish VKB released their throttle .
@@Solo6R I use a warthog throttle which I think is about$250 it's a solid throttle, it think the virpil and winwing have excellent throttles as well for a little more $$$$ but in the ballpark of the warthog.
I upgraded from the X52pro which I had for decades to the VKB NXT Evo and I love love love it! I can't wait for their hotas throttle companion to this stick, the VKB TECS
Great vid, have not entered PVP yet in DCS and I am leaning towards cold war. Will have to check this out. Also, for the money, WINWING is one of if not the best HOTAS producers. I have the Orion 2 HOTAS Max and the F16EX stick with shaker motor is incredible. The vibration feedback that occurs when you over G or leave airbrakes on is invaluable.
Wow. Was never really bothered about VR due to performance and graphics but this looks incredible! 4090 really is a game changer for VR, looking forward to the future of this sim and more of your content 👌
Fantastic video for someone who lurks looking in and is considering getting regular time in the server, thing I’ll take the mig21 as I already own it, can’t wait for the challenge
I wish the F-104 would be available. It would probably be more a niche aircraft than anything else, but it is such a special aircraft. The G version could do AA, AG, antiship, recce. Maybe it did not excel in any role. But it looks great and it is challenging to fly. Not an aircraft where you could ignore any limit or even just pull the stick back without being aware of the AOA.
Great video and guide the only thing I'll say is DONT SLEEP ON THE F86. I think it's feared on the server for a2a because while it isn't super sonic it cruises trans sonic and it will out turn anything. You can dominate a dogfight if you know basic bfm and if they try to run you have fox2s. No counter measures or rwr is a downside but if you keep tally of the threat you can use your maneuverability (and lack of an after burner) to dodge all but the best fox 2 shots and keeping an eye on the map can save you from sams. Your biggest enemy is your team mis IDing you as a mig15.
You covered the topic very well. I'm trying to get into the cold war still. Just been messing around with the Apache, so I had been distracted. I need to get in there and learn how to function. I'm going to try my luck with the F-1 since it seems to have improved some. Thanks for the video!
Yeah I don't understand why this doesn't make the plane lists. EDIT: Nevermind. This is from the FAQ for Alpenwolf server. "Any plans on adding the A-4 mod? As a module, ASAP! As a mod, no. Because a mod would force everyone to get it and to constantly have it up to date, otherwise flying on the server would be limited to only those who have the mod installed.Besides, I've had some bad experience with some mods installed in the past and I'm dealing with enough bugs already. I can't risk having more of that."
Another thing about mod planes is that there is currently no way to check serverside if the mod has been tampered with, imagine someone flying an "A4" with AMRAAMS up the ass, griefing everyone.
I did precisely what you said in terms of sticks. I bought the 3d extreme for Battlefield flying, then when I started poking around with DCS and Star Citizen, I bought the T16k setup (which I still love the throttle for the money), then committed and bought in with Virpil. When I was buying in, VKB was very hard to get (initially so too were Virpil products) and the NXT wasnt out. I didn't see VKB as viable, too difficult to get. And I didn't see movement from them, like I did from Virpil. Virpil is pricy, but they listen to their customers and try hard to make what their customers want. Their first throttle didn't offer a slew stick, people complained, next release had a slew stick. Then the next release got the AFB attachments. It's sad that listening to your customers makes you exceptional, but it is what it is. On a different note, it's a shame the Chinook variant that announced today is a 2006 version. Seems unlikely to find it's way into cold war =/
I own the viggen! Pretty solid plane. And yeah it takes a long time to learn it compared to others. Took me weeks to properly land it. Took me months to figure out how to fire the weapons on it. I learned the startup in a couple of days. It takes awhile but if you are patient it’s worth it. I wouldn’t say that I can fly it professionally like a Swedish pilot but I can take off, land, and use the basic weaponry on it.
If the cockpit doesn't come in Arizona Turquoise theme, i likely don't want it. Redfor Bestfor o/ excellent server and a staple of what peak Coldwar DCS Offers. 10/10
Hopefully, once the F-15E is out, the Mig-23 isn't too far behind. Maybe 2024. The F-4E early model is going to be awesome on your server. There has been mention of the Early F-14A recently. I do wish we would get the F-14I with the ability to carry the HAWK missile. The A-7E is still in the works, and one day, OctopusG is going to surprise us with an SU-17/22. The future of your server is bright indeed. I'm curious, once there are more early cold war birds available, will you split the server into early and late Cold War campaigns?
Great review and I loved how you exprested your limits as for heardware you only need a gamepad from whatever modern console of your choice and maybe a keyboard... Which for flightsticks(I come from the day that gamepads werenot a choice.) the thustmaster T-Flight too start with mind you it will break on you... So then the X52 which is the flight stick I've had since the '00s and still works fine today and hhas more inputs then most other Hottas... you'll still need a keyboard though DCS when simming as DCS is DCS.
I’ll say from experience that the MiG-21 in particular should not be your first module. Not because of how it flies, but because of how overwhelming it can be to just find out how DCS itself works. It’s a great second buy once you can confidently fly just in general, but the massive confusing wall of binds to set up and other issues like that make it discouraging enough that I gave up trying to learn for months multiple times FC3 is amazing though, especially for a first time buyer, as the standardization lets you branch out a bit without getting blindsided by how different everything is. The MiG is a great second buy to branch out into high fidelity modules, though
A good guide, my personal favorites for your server are the F-86 and MiG-19. They have similar capabilities and gives me the same great feeling when flying and fighting in them. They have different strengths and weaknesses and should be handled differently in a fight but they still give me similar vibes when flying them.
I think the f-86 is pretty strong on the enigma server when it's populated. It's easy to slip in undetected because overlord is being spammed. I find the when I fly the mig-21 I mostly die to sabres because I spot them too late and can't dogfight them effectively. I also suck at the game though, so I don't know who's supposed to win a dogfight between the 21 and the 86 lol.
Great resource! Thanks for posting this. Would you mind going more in depth into your HOTAS setup at some point, like the mappings you find essential, stick and rudder curves, and Track IR profile at some point?
I really love the F86, one of my favorite planes. I got the module recently and I really enjoy flying it, but the artwork is quite dated inside the cockpit. Ofc the plane itself looks absolutely breathtaking. Hopefully the F86 will get an art update sometime in the future!
Thanks for nice video. Do you have any videos or tops on how to get started with MP on a coldwar server for players coming from a SP and PVE MP background? What is really holding me back is the fear of shooting down my own teams airplanes. I have not problem getting my ass beaten, but the risk of blue on blue and me breaking the game for others is what is really holding me back from starting on PVP servers and even more so cold war where there is no IFF etc.
Nice video. Sadly F4E is coming soon, and... well we may need an update then :p Maybe with later Mig23MLA, F8J, A7 corsair II, intruder and all those boys.
Quick question. Would it be possible to have Mirage 2000C on "cold war"? I mean we have F14A and Mirage came around same time as the tomcat. It entered service in 78 while cat 74. I can agree on some restrictions but it would be an interesting craft maybe limit 2 fox 2 or 2 fox 1 only. Not 4 missiles. F1 came in 73. Viggen 72. :)
@@thomasbouvier3203 The Mirage 2000C variant is from roughly 1987 and doesn't have access to the older weapons the earlier M2000C variant had. You have Tempest Blue Flash server that's set in a late 1980s environment so the Mirage 2000 is right at home in that scenario.
used to main the L-39 on alpine wolfs back when i played, real pleasure to fly w/ my bud. easily out rate the f-5s all day and had the R-3s for when the f-5s inevitably tried to run. and when one of us went down, just become the RIO, hop in the back seat and opotate the... uh.. IFR hood mid dogfight? 👍
Great video! Only thing I would fix is the voice over. Nothing wrong with the words, just that the volume of your voice changed up and down a few time.
I have a logitech 3D pro and a TWCS throttle that i found dirt cheap. I also want to get a cheap webcam for opentrack. Personally, the setup i have right now is totally ok and cheap for those who want a HOTAS that won't empty your pockets
I agree with your assessment, and the Cold war will get very hot when the A-6, A-7, the Flogger and of course the F-4 are released. I do think people who are new and jump in and buy up several modules at the same time are doing themselves a disservice because they end up not focusing on getting the most out of their planes. One thing about the HOTAS, if newbies aren't sure if they are going to like DCS, and they are many, I do recommend getting a cheaper setup like the X-52, or better - the X-56. Even if they decide DCS is not for them, they might get interested in a space sim, or MSFS, or if they choose to bail altogether, they can always sell them and probably won't lose much money doing it. That also goes for upgrading to a better HOTAS, as long as they function you will get most of your money back, because there's always someone who is looking for cheap, used gear to start with. Cheers for a great year ahead!

@@testthepest6259 It is a cold war plane but we do not use it. The Cold War period is a really long period. We decide to focus on the most fun part of it. I am of the opinion that when you make the transition into all aspect fighting with fox-1 stuff then the fun factor goes down quite a bit.
@@testthepest6259 F1 has 530 EMs, F-14 has earlier Sparrows, MiG-29A has 27s, and MiG-21 has R-3Rs (F-14A/MiG-29A on the server are limited to 4 per side and also require 15 points from killing bombers/ground targets to spawn). Mirage 2000c would be ridiculously powerful on the server to the point of it being completely game breaking (it does very well on other servers where it isn't fighting AMRAAMs). It's good advanced sensors/avionics, proper look up/down radar, maybe the best Fox 1 in the game, great IR missiles, great guns, great agility...and so on. It's really only a plane that's hard to fly if you are fighting other "Modern" jets with the best missiles they can carry (against early to mid CW it would just flex without any trouble). Not to be flippant, but people say stuff like this often "it's a CW jet, just add it", but there is more to consider than if a plane can fit somehow into a rl CW timeline (the other issue is variants, F-16A is a neat CW jet, F-16C isn't the same jet and is quite hard to balance for mid CW).
@Enigma I just got the mig 21,but I just wanted to ask how to practice dogfights with the ai in the dcs. Guns only f5 are near impossible to fight as they out turn , out climb and never loose any energy when maneuvering
I like the MiG-15 quite a lot, ambush with it, at low speed or turning the engine is surprisingly good accelerationwise vs the F-5 or Viggen- As for the part about the enemy not flying well- this is completely the case. That said a lot don't fly well I guess. I still remember the day a few months ago I bagged 3 viggens in one sortie with the 15 because I suckered them all into a turn fight and they were toast when they committed.
I didn't see any mention of the Harrier or Skyhawk - are they not cold war mods? I'm about to get started in DCS and was considering one of the aforementioned..
Viggen is a great module to go for as it's the predominant low level strike aircraft and is still capable in a modern context. Ok it will not dog fight, it's AAM are at best kibbutz as a striker only the Tornado (or possibly the Strike Eagle) will beat it. That my 2 cents anyway
For newies un cold war I would recommend the F-5, if It was updated, no doubt. Next the Mig-21, they both are easy, simple and have some kind of ground attack as well. But the MIG Will be updated
The question is, will it be allowed in Enigma? If yes, that's all good, but if no, will it be due to its unicorn status or its avionics/capability/era?
Enigma cold war server is awesome and needed for DCS, how to attract more squadrons or motivate more players to join/create squadron is question that need to be asked.
If and when they release the Huey Cobra the parity will be much closer I think. Blue is in need of an attack helo as the Gazelle just doesn't compare to the Hind due to its restrictive loadout.
Maybe a little bit about L-39 Albatros since I was free trialing it just out of curiosity and cuz I love the jet. Pros: Great visability, forgiving especially while stall, extremely easy to learn, durable and suprisingly flexible since I experienced some tough fights against Sabers and they had problems with me even tho I lost at the end, viariable AA and AG capabilities (not great- not terrible). Cons: Kinda slow but it's not that big thing, no rwr or radar but that was not a problem for me actually, little bit hard to change to guns from missiles during dogfight, G-tolerance to AA missiles (R-3s, idk about R-60 because I didn't spend much time on Syria map and I'm not sure if they are available on Caucassus (didn't notice)) and for guns you can shoot them at certain angle toward the ground otherwise they won't fire so no high G turns for you and biggest problem I've noticed but I'm not sure if it's server or plane or me is radio comunication. Albatros does not have frequency radio but channels. So if server does not have these channels set for certain frequencies, you won't be able to call overlord for bogey dopes and you can't do reacon missions since you can't open com menu during the flight, only on ground. Luckily server has text overlord too so you can at least set tripwire. Again idk if the problem is in me cuz I didn't try it with other plane but whatch out for this and if someone has other experience maybe u will help with this. Otherwise it's very fun plane, kills are extremely satifying since you are going to the fight as underdog and I can recommend at least try it for free.
Love the idea for your cold war server, but the spotting / IFF challenge becomes a game of changing display settings just for one server. As a % your server seems to have a lot of friendly fire incidents, and that's without fox3!
Even though i've been following DCS for years i haven't yet played the game, mostly because i have no machine powerful enough for it. I'm aiming however to build a nice machine next year. Cold War is my favorite era, and i would like to see: SU-7 SU-17 MiG-17 MiG-21F-13 MiG-21MF MiG-23ML MiG-25 Mirage III Saab Draken Yak-38 (why not?) F-104
I am coming from IL-2 & want to start learning the early cold war stuff, should I start with F-1/ F-5? For blue or mig 15/21 for red? Might as well re-watch 😅 your video, i just don't have much time so i want an easy plane with action instead of frustration & weeks of learning the systems... ATM i installed the free mod A-4E. Did some casual flights, carrier landings & and takeoffs... Weapon systems are still a bit complex to me.
The Mig 21 giving me the feeling it trying to kill me. Is why I like it. It let's me know when I need to change how I fly. The Vigen for ground strike, is my go to plane. The FC3 planes for me is a MUST first buy. 99.999% of the 3rd party mods use FC3 as its under pinning.
I think i heard rumours about a Su-17/22 which would fit right in, though not a lot of word on it so understandably it's not on the future module list yet.
The Su-17/22 showed up in Magnitude3 and OctopusG screen shots, unknown who will have the right to publish, except ED. RAZBAM is coming out with the MiG-23.
you seems to have very clear and sharpen graphic, that's should help with spotting. May I ask you what are your AA settings? you also use something like nvidia panel to set it properly? tks
Great video. One question - Will the upcoming F4 Phantom be part of the cold war available aircraft? It seems like a dumb question, but I am just asking to make sure. I have yet to buy a cold war module and, if the F4 will be part of the cold war setting, I will go for that. Otherwise, something else. Thanks!
@@kendil22 Ok thanks
Was a phenom for sure
@@wildelmo925 In your desperate attempt to seem intelligent you missed the point completely. Well done!
@@jimmydesouza4375 How rude!
Still abandoned?
@ No new features + no new cockpit…. Only external model change and new textures… for $15
I remember in the previous buyers guide, my complaint was that helicopters weren't included, nice to see they are now.
The feedback makes the videos better, thanks.
Well You could get the F-14 as your first module if you really like pain.
@@PaletoB 100% Agreed.
Nothing to add. I picked up the Hind around 4 weeks ago and i love it.
I’ll check it!
Fecking love the Hind, yes.
pretty much. the hind is easily my favorite module. extremely capable and a joy to fly and fight helos/jets in.
Give it a try with the now available free 2 weeks trial, and form your own opinion.
i love the editing and production value on this! a huge improvement to the old video!
Thank for saying that. I am trying to put more time into each video and make them more enjoyable and memorable
When the F-4E comes out I would like to hear your thoughts on the module and it's cold war applications. I know the E has a gun but it was still a Fox-1 and Fox-2 fighter at heart.
i would also like to know if it will come to the cold war server
@@General_Specter it looks like enigma confirmed it would be in another comment
@@c0lonelmustard14 thanks for the info!!!
@@Solo6R The WH throttle would be a good replacement if it was cheaper.
Yes, I love my NXT MK1!
Viggen is love. Very unique plane, but also fun and nice to fly.
In 5-6 years time, we might get all of those
- F-4 and A-6 by Heatblur
- F-8 by Leatherneck
- A-7 by Flying Iron
- Mig-23 from Razbam
And recently announced were the Kfir and Super Sabre
A6 would be amazing.
Oh my goodness, the E.E.L. I love that plane so much, I've been flying the MiG-21bis as a replacement (similar quirks and role) but having that plane be implemented would be amazing!
Hey man I think they teased the a7 in the new year video
This is spooky. I only found your server and channel recently, and coincidentally only watched your first vid on this subject about 3 hours ago

This is a great overview and much more informative than the previous video you made. It's really helpful having an updated buyers guide!
Don't forget the A-4 and OV-10 Bronco mods. These mods are excellent aircraft, fun to flow and a lot of fun to fly against period correct Redfor. (And until we get the A-7, we really need a light strike option).

It is pitty that you forgot the free A-4 Skyhawk, which is very well done module and capable airplane.
One thing to mention about the Mig-19 that's quite important is that it cannont carry flares so it has little defence against IR seeking missles.
The Hog and Hind fit very well together. The most fun ground attacking
Wow. Was never really bothered about VR due to performance and graphics but this looks incredible! 4090 really is a game changer for VR, looking forward to the future of this sim and more of your content 👌
A 4090 will also break your wallet.
Re HOTAS, I've been using an old CH Fighterstick and an X-56 throttle for over a while now. The CH for over 10 years, the -56 about 3 years.

Only thing I've been wondering is if the A4 Skyhawk fits in anywhere? That seems to be around the right sort of vintage, and is a hoot to fly.

Thanks!
Very nice video, finally my beloved whirly birds are also included
I’ll say from experience that the MiG-21 in particular should not be your first module. Not because of how it flies, but because of how overwhelming it can be to just find out how DCS itself works. It’s a great second buy once you can confidently fly just in general, but the massive confusing wall of binds to set up and other issues like that make it discouraging enough that I gave up trying to learn for months multiple times
FC3 is amazing though, especially for a first time buyer, as the standardization lets you branch out a bit without getting blindsided by how different everything is. The MiG is a great second buy to branch out into high fidelity modules, though
Really love the Cold War fleet, the MiG19 and F-5 are a must and just fun to fly in multiplayer or stand alone.
hell yah i love your dcs cold war content
Nice informative video, but what about the Mirage 2000? How does it stack up to these other planes, or doesn't it?
I love the MiG-19 because it feels like a hardcore sportscar! F-5 is in the sweetspot I'd say for any beginner.

Oh i forgot F100 and mig 17F. Well... They are older and less armed... its still good planes and able... I mean saw some f86 score kills.

We really need later versions of the f-5 or even a f-20

If the F-5 had two more sidewinders or a pair of sparrows to go with the sidewinders, I think it would be my absolute favorite plane.

I have a logitech 3D pro and a TWCS throttle that i found dirt cheap. I also want to get a cheap webcam for opentrack. Personally, the setup i have right now is totally ok and cheap for those who want a HOTAS that won't empty your pockets
Thank you for your videos, They are very helpful.

Hi, i thought the M-2000C is also a Coldwarplane, can you tell me why it's not?
@@testthepest6259 It is a cold war plane but we do not use it. The Cold War period is a really long period. We decide to focus on the most fun part of it. I am of the opinion that when you make the transition into all aspect fighting with fox-1 stuff then the fun factor goes down quite a bit.
@@Enigma89 So all Planes on your server "only" have fox-2s?
Mirage F1 update with a new multirole variant appears to be "soon" based on the new vid that literally just dropped. xD
Just in time for my lunch break, I need to hide my wallet when I get home.....
> “F-5E is the most popular module in our server by flight time”
Heatblur F-4E: _Allow me to introduce myself_
I do you join the cold war server, I'm new to DCS.
just learning the Viggen as my first Jet
... Hitch your Wagon to a star I guess
I picked up my favorite aircraft of all time (the MiG-21) today
Very Helpful thank you. Can you add the Mistral to the mix?
Otherwise it's very fun plane, kills are extremely satifying since you are going to the fight as underdog and I can recommend at least try it for free.
thanks for the guide!
Love the idea for your cold war server, but the spotting / IFF challenge becomes a game of changing display settings just for one server. As a % your server seems to have a lot of friendly fire incidents, and that's without fox3!
People have bad habits in this game.
Even though i've been following DCS for years i haven't yet played the game, mostly because i have no machine powerful enough for it. I'm aiming however to build a nice machine next year.
Cold War is my favorite era, and i would like to see:
SU-7
SU-17
MiG-17
MiG-21F-13
MiG-21MF
MiG-23ML
MiG-25
Mirage III
Saab Draken
Yak-38 (why not?)
F-104
Deka is working on the J-8PP, will it possibly be in the server?
aw man, I wanted to join, but it seems the su-27, su-33 and mig-29 (Not even the older variants) arent on the server
F5 is easiest to learn imo
The Mig 21 giving me the feeling it trying to kill me. Is why I like it. It let's me know when I need to change how I fly.
The Vigen for ground strike, is my go to plane.
The FC3 planes for me is a MUST first buy. 99.999% of the 3rd party mods use FC3 as its under pinning.
I hop this gets more people intressted!
Are you able to fly the F/A-18C since it was introduced in the late 70’s?
No the hornet in the game we have is a modern one and not a 70s one
I think i heard rumours about a Su-17/22 which would fit right in, though not a lot of word on it so understandably it's not on the future module list yet.
It's been in the Razbam Mines for I think a few years now. It is still in development and coming out Eventually, but it might be a while still.
There's a demo video of SU22 here ruclips.net/video/wRAuDfx8fwE/видео.html by OctopusG but it would presumbably release after the LA 7 they are doing.
The Su-17/22 showed up in Magnitude3 and OctopusG screen shots, unknown who will have the right to publish, except ED. RAZBAM is coming out with the MiG-23.
Great video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
you seems to have very clear and sharpen graphic, that's should help with spotting. May I ask you what are your AA settings? you also use something like nvidia panel to set it properly? tks
My settings are posted on the discord in the rules area. Nothing is done in the nvidia panel.
Thanks!
yes
