Oh man! I can relate to this video SO much! In my experience as an art RUclipsr pretty much any little thing can get accused of copying...Even my eyebrows have been accused of copying Natalies outlets eyebrows! Lol! The strawberry I drew is just a standard stock photo that is one of the top results on google and Pinterest and I’ve seen it drawn time and time again! Its incredible to see artists build upon one photo and it’s interesting to see how each person tackles the reference! It’s how art and new ideas are made. I think your drawing came out BEAUTIFUL! You’re very talented and explained yourself amazing in this video, and I apologize in for anyone who on my behalf who accused you of copying when in reality that just wasn’t the case! I’m subscribing and I look forward to seeing more of your videos!! 🙌

A similar thing happened to me. I draw realism on instagram so I drew a fish from reference. Then I got a DM from someone accusing me of stealing their art. They literally drew the fish from reference too so I was like ??? did you just forget or???

This is really random but do you have any advice on taking pictures of the drawings you made, mine are always too bright or have shadows and your profile picture is just amazing!! Beautiful artwork btw :)

If the photographer who took the picture is from Germany, you could get in copyright-trouble, if the photograph and the illustration are too similar. You need the rights to use it. So I never use just one reference.

A reference photo is just that, a reference point, every artist will interpret that photo differently, every artist drawing will always be different. So, people saying that it's stealing, well, they're wrong, and they don't know the definition of REFERENCE!
It’s one thing to use a reference photo but stealing a whole style a long deserves credit
@@Seven11seven7 I don't think you can really steal an art style no matter how hard you try part of you will be in it. I haven't watch the video but I think Rae just copied the ref and same for her.

Where you will be accused of copying anything and everything. 🤣 Be careful when you follow video trends from other youtubers too, even if you credit them 15 seconds into the video and link them for starting the trend you'll get the ole "x did this first" "you copied x" NOT that I speak from experience or anything...😂you're sweet, glad I found you haha

This is rediculous 😂 I had an account where I uploaded art but got sick of the accusations bc it was more trouble than it was worth lol
People really don't realize that Pinterest HEAVILY pushes the same few reference photos on everybody. I've seen big RUclipsrs work with the same references I've used for personal portrait likeness studies all the time. It's almost frustrating because it can take some digging to find interesting reference photos on Pinterest that I HAVEN'T already seen or seen get used all over way too often lmao
EDIT: Hah, I meant this more as a criticism of Pinterest and its algorithms rather than a call for suggestions, but for folks who want suggestions for alternatives for references, the replies have many!

There's some pages on FB with free reference photos for artists, I've seen a lot of good, different photos up there.

As you have said, the "stan culture" and the "hate clubs" are extremely toxic. People become so obsessed with or will demonize a person as if they know that person. It's truly scary! But, if the person they glorify does something the so-called "fan" does not like... God help that person!

I was scrolling on the internet one day until, I saw a deviantart post... of someone saying *"This person copied my pose."* I was officially done with life right then and there.
I think spoctor did a video of art theft types and pose theft was one of them lmao

This problem extends outside the realism space. I draw monsters and scary stuff, so I decided to do a creepy Ed Edd n Eddy drawing, because I was a fan of the show growing up. But when the piece started doing decent on Instagram, tons of Meatcanyon's (that guy that does all those creepy weird animations on YT) fans started accusing me of art theft. Which honestly baffled me, because both of our interpretations looked so drastically different. But I guess some people just can't accept that more than one person can arrive at the same creative conclusion. Some people just like to waste their lives "cancelling" things.
And honestly, it's just kind of sad. Anyway - subbed! Great content.
Someone accused me of stealing my own art, lmao. They'll accuse of anything literally. I just took a bad screen cap on my phone. I had to show my own files to prove it was mine.

Omg I drew the same strawberry! (My main channel is melondoodle not this one so you can’t find the video on this channel) people called me out saying I copied Rae! I pointed out that Pinterest has SOOO many drawings of the same drawing, and I was quite sad since I used a different reference that Raes. 😭
So sad people like to gatekeep! Multiple people should be able to use the same/similar references without these accusations

Oh man, stan culture just kind of...creeps me out, tbh. The fact that people will throw themselves under the bus for someone who doesn't even know they exist -- that's disturbing to me.
For this specific thing... it seems like they had good intentions, but really missed the mark. I've seen such a gross, toxic attitude in the art community over references -- if you need them, you're not a """"real artist"""", which is bollocks, and I'm glad to see a lot of artists actively fighting that and encouraging reference usage. A good reference will lay down a solid foundation and let the artist's style, skill and spirit really shine!
People say real artists don't need references? That might be the dumbest, most ignorant thing I've ever heard. This kinda shit is why I hate communities in general. Fan(atics) and stans are definitionally unhinged.
It's funny because those same people will only buy art from artists who use tons of references, because all good artists use references. They are stunting their own potential and other new creator's potential with this false belief.

I'm tired about how toxic the community is too, I can't even follow art tips accounts because when I see the comments there are always gachatubers or toxic kids calling bs others' tips, shitting on others' art for being too realistic or too cartonish, or demanding better tutorials as if they were paying for it. The worst thing is that they are always the ones who get more likes than every positive comment

I can so relate!! I think the fans might not realize that we’re all going to the same sites for references and that algorithms will show a lot of us the same images. I’ve gotten snippy messages from people on Instagram because they think I’ve used a drawing that another artist has done, when what we’ve done is used the same reference. I’ve started trying to consciously not use the same reference photos but it’s difficult sometimes, especially in the wildlife art community. I may just start responding to trolls with interpretive dance 😁

I’ve had almost that EXACT chocolate dipped strawberry, tattooed on my leg for nearly 15 years-does that mean Rae Dizzle copied it? No. Because that’s not how this works….That’s not how any of this works!🤣🤦♀️
My mom always told me of this story where this girl accused someone of something then the girl found out she was wrong so she went to confession and the priest said he wanted her to open a pillow and let all the feathers out on a windy day, then try to collect them all so the girl says "father that's impossible" and the priest says "that's how hard it is to take back your words after you've said them"

In art almost no idea is unique, thousands of people have drawn a rhino but it's the emotion that you put into that drawing/painting. I am iffy on realism I used to want to do it but I started to realize that realism is dull to me and I want the beauty I know I can put into the work. But saying you can steal a free stock photo used as a reference is insane.

I’m starting back to drawing after months but I noticed when I was going through mental health problems I drew better now it’s just bad that I have myself together, but all you’re all right about this.
I've used this same strawberry reference photo for an acrylic painting. I found it on Google. I think I should attempt to combine different reference photos or take my own reference photos to avoid a similar predicament. Thanks!

Definitely this is a situation not helped by many viewers having a limited understanding of copyright and copyright free images. In some cases they are trying to support their art gods, but by not understanding the full picture around source materials it just causes noise and hurt feelings all round. Well done for speaking up about it so politely and constructively.
Great video, someone had to say it!! I'm also a participant in a lot of art facebook groups and oh man, the amount of people that complain because someone else has drawn their same reference of a famous actor, like they have stolen their "idea" is insane! You're so chill, I love your vibes!

I like it SO much when I see multiple people using the same reference because you see a little bit of their heart in each variation and it's so amazing how the exact same image can become different in so many ways if you change the hand that draws it! There are so many people out there that it's more and more frequent to see a lot of people getting the same idea. RUclips is a huge space. There's room for every amazing artist making the same chocolate-covered strawberry. If two bakeries sell bread, nobody will ever say they copied each other, even though they use the exact same ingredients to make the bread. So why does it have to be any different for artists using the same reference?

I don't have the privilege of being able to buy such wonderful artistic art utensils but my folks make sure I've always got a little bit of something to draw with whenever I'm feeling low and I always make the best of it...I saw the video that the other person had and I don't believe anything is really bad...just that it has to be used in a different way for something else...afterall in art there's always a purpose nothing is just there for nothing and your Tuesday videos always help inspire me and keep me confident!! i love your honesty. Love your videos. Me and my girls followed your strawberry tutorial and loved it so much. We drew amazing strawberries . Ignore the moaners people are always trying to moan about something, so annoying. Keep up the good work your fantastic.
This does highlight the point that it’s always important for artists to keep copies of the reference photos you use (and a license for them if you are using them commercially) and any copies of your first sketches (unless you are doing a video where it’s obvious you are the artist) to protect yourself in the future.
People jump to conclusions, and these kinds of accusations can completely destroy a career, without any actual basis. It’s so sad.
Thank you for sharing thisssss!!! My art is all about animals and I don’t have access to a lion to look at or take my own reference photos of unfortunately so looking at reference photographs is really important for my art. If a ton of artists draw from the same reference it’s always going to be different! It’s ok to have a common inspiration as long as what you do with it is your own.

I've only recently found your channel & it was by accident. I love it when this happens!! I'm a newbie to drawing with colored pencils. Well as an adult, anyway. It started with the adult coloring craze & kind of evolved into wanting to draw my own pictures to color instead of just coloring someone else's drawings for reference & making an exact copy.
Being fairly new to this art medium I became very overwhelmed just considering what supplies to buy to get started. 😀I didnt want to dive in head first & pay hundreds of dollars only to have the novelty of drawing on my own to fall by the wayside in a few weeks. Trust me, I have a full room dedicated to different arts & crafts only to have this happen. So I've been watching YT tutorials to guide me not only thru buying supplies, but also teach me techniques, process & what Im absolutely terrible at...choosing colors. Im hoping in time I will become more confident with this, but until then professional artists like yourself will be my training wheels. LOL!! I'm so grateful to you for graciously sharing your talents & creativity with the rest of us.
I have found in my 50+ years of living that no matter what the subject there will always be haters. I truly believe there are people who wake up & have but one goal for their day. And its to make someone else as miserable as they are. What a shitty goal to have!!😄 And when they are given a platform like You Tube to spew their it & are able to do it anonymously without being held accountable you have all the ingredients for a perfect storm so to speak. In my honest opinion I believe in general hateful comments only accomplish one thing. It just exposes the author for who they genuinely are & its NOT pretty!! I figure we ALL dont have to like & agree on everything, but we do have to be respectful of other's opinions even when they differ from our own. That is if we want others to respect ours. Like you said, it always helps to do your homework first before making accusations. I just googled "chocolate dipped strawberry drawing" and that reference picture comes right up. I'm sure that's how Rae found it too.

Wowzers, people don't think before they type do they, I can relate had a similar experience with a portrait I did of a dog, had several people saying I had stole their art, I ask to see the piece I have stole, the dog is in a totally different pose, and sometimes, even in a different art supply! Honestly, since I look at MAYBE one or two places for references, I’ve seen the same pictures pop up all over the place. By different artists or companies using them. From my perspective it’s kind of like if you know you know. I always think “Aw I know where you got that reference, I like that reference, you do you. Works looks great.” But it’s hard and time consuming for artists to go out and get their own references all the time. We arnt all professional photographers 🤷🏻♂️ I feel you 100%
After the intense title and expression on the cover photo I was very pleasantly surprised by your kind manner and rational reasonings. You addressed a very real problem with a kind voice and without being rude. Way to go nice person! :) I have been accused of copying myself and it is not a fun situation to be in.

Thank you for this video! When I saw the drawing, it reminded me of Rae's drawing, however, I could tell that you CLEARY DREW THAT!! You even showed the process in the video. May I mention that the paper is a differnt color. Rae used toned paper and you used white paper! Hence, please don't coem for anyone. Just BE NICE!
Art fandom is real toxic! I had a lady scudding of stealing her art style whilst every person was doing svgs, avatars and flipping caricatures......to this day I am very baffled and confused. I gave up graphics and focused on traditional art 😊❤️.

Thank you for this. I recently noticed that this kind of mindset, (scared being called a thief), really paralised my journey. I've been waiting to improve my drawing skills for so long. It is really sad. Luckily I got to shake it. Right now I'm enjoying learning to draw again after not really drawing for about a decade. I'm also trying out watercolour. I'm really enjoying the proces. And, let me come to my point. Today I went to an exhibition from Van Gogh. In his timeline they stated at which paint in his life who he was getting inspiration an guidance from an how you see the reflections of that in his later work. It made me so happy and comfirmed that this whole 'who is stealing from who' is such bs.

I was watching art videos when I stumbled upon this one. While watching I had already planned that I'll watch the two videos I.e. yours and Rae's to compare myself and see why you're being called out for nothing by people who have nothing else to do..
Also I understand that the videos are too different from each other, honestly I liked yours more (the drawing).
And art is something that is a perspective..every different person will come out with a different one. In fact, I think it's only good to see more people do one thing in a lot different ways...the one who absorbs only learn....

So many times people have accused me of stealing my own original art and when I asked them if that's the case who's the original artist half the time say say idk I just saw it somewhere else or they send me a account where the other person was the one to steal my art that's why I always make sure after I'm done drawing to make sure I take a picture with my art of the current date next to it just incase someone says I stole something so I can show I'm telling the truth cause people will report your account in a blink of a eye without getting the full information they need its so annoying

Well, its not just the art community. To me, it's a general fandom thing. I don't mean stealing, but the toxicity coughandstupiditycough*. Just some people taking things too far and thinking their way/thought is the only one that is right. Honestly, I see cupcakes, strawberries, cherries, lips, and even eyes EVERYWHERE and ALMOST THE SAME. I just assume it's the top google search when people look for references.
Man...i need this channel so much thank you so much. im just starting out myself since i havent really did any art sin HS but ive feel so drained and stressed about art now cause it feels like i got to get everything perfect right away and it seems like my art has been growing less in quality because im less inspired lol.
