We've already tested the new BMW M5 both on track and on road. And yes, with a 552bhp twin-turbo V8 it has incredible performance.
But what is it like to live with and how does it cope over really long distances? Is the new BMW M5 really the continent-slayer its predecessor -- with its limited range, manic engine and firm suspension -- failed to be? There's only one way to find out: a mammoth road test from the Pyrenees in northern Spain all way back to the UK.

Carwow came a long wayyy
best job on the world.. test driver
wow thanks Matt, I've been waiting for this review for a very long time!
Great review, as always Mat!
Love the video, I wish you could do more of these.
552 bhp as normal with M cars that's miles under the actual bhp it's said its pushing about 630 bhp
Looks like such a fun trip
nice to see you again on RUclips Mat!
Great Video! I hope you do more like this.
Great review Matt!
Great job Matt
Wow very impressive review!
Great review!
I love the end !!
Nice conclusion there, completely agreed :)
great review
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice job, nice work, nice... everything.
nice one matt
nice vid..u should also show more of the city driving
Man like Matt Watty
great reviewer really
Matt u r cool reviewer, keep it up dude!
This guy is seriously a good reviewer.
Nice review ....
the final sentence says it all :)
great summary
BEST SUMMARY EVER :))
3:06 that's awesome building to the left! Is it residential?
Fuel is crazy in europe..117€ is equal 150$,,wen in Usa i just toped my e46zhp for under 26$.I thank God who brought me here..
Matt, I have a question; Are these shifters as fun as a manual gearbox? Do they have a similar feeling of control? I always found ATs too numb to drive in a more engaging way, even in manual mode. (But I like it in city traffic)
There you are, Mat!
BIG LIKE!!!nice review nice color nice car nice environment...
first ever realistic review of this car
How about a 640D as a compromise?
I own one of these as a daily driver and love it, it costs a lot to run but its an M5, its comfortable, quick, carries the family and provides interesting driving in the dry and wet! Awesome car which I can't think of a better replacement! :)
What do you mean by it costs a lot to run?
@@nicholasfiltz4527 It doesn’t matter that these can be bought cheaply, they will still have high running costs for tyres, fuel, servicing, spare parts etc.
I love the music!!!!
Does every car have a holder for the cap? I had no idea they existed, I've just been letting it drop haha
good video
Who did he hit? link the point in the video when he cut through a blind bend. Thank you. I thought so.
1:27 watch the van trying to pass the BMW
Van guy: come on! move that piece of (...) out of my way!!
another good review, but I would rather have the new M550D, part if the new M range, with a tri turbo engine!!
What is the music from 5:17 on? Really brilliant.. Thanks
Man, it must be strange to live in a place where a 5-series is a big car that gets to boss other cars around. Where I live, if you have a Ram 1500 4x4, you still stand a very good chance of coming across something that makes you go, "Holy shit, better not fuck with THAT."
What kinda watch is that your wearing Mat?
@NickJayKay ........Exactly, it is the auto carrier for the Channel Tunnel or Chunnel train from Calais, France to some small town outside of London. It is called the Eurostar............bad ass fast and not particularly cheap.
Mat NEEDS to be the next new Top Gear presenter!!!
Dude what the hell you were supposed to call me, I had my bags packed and was all excited to drive the M5. Damn you Mat.
@Wash9102 I am pretty sure it will have a V6 because I saw the video of it......
I'm getting this car for my son when he 17 same like yours
Matt NEEDS to be the next new Top Gear presenter :D
What did he drive in at the end of the video?
AMAZING CAR.
Great point at the end. I'd get a 1M and a 520d for the same money as one M5 any day!
Matt Rules!!!
no bottles????
whats that thing at the end?
@krunal467 You don't know what engine the F10 series M3 will house, and I'm pretty sure it won't be a V6 either. BMWs are known for their inline 6 cylinder engines.
Awesome!
BMW in its natural habitat... the petrol station
Anyone knows which watch was he wearing?
@gmax876 thats cos fuel in US is dirt cheap, relatively... and everyone is still grumbling about it.
From 3:00 to 3:20 Mat is in Bordeaux, France.
Ok nobody cares but since it's where I live I was surprised to recognize the city. :D
Love this car:-)
In latvia its 1.09 euro / 1L ( 95 ) and 1.13 euro / 1L: ( 98 (premium) )
There is a broken white line in the center of the road. In the EU that means you can cross it.
If you can point to a part in the video where there is an obvious blind spot where a pedestrian could run out from, feel free to point it out, i cant see one.
Or a point where a car could come around the corner.
@ratpie No this is from a while back.
@john4short is that so? Well to say Mat is pretty much half the age of them lot I think he'd be pretty good on there in a few years! His presenting style is to the point, fun and he's likeable :) and that's coming from a massive Top Gear fan.
@Pezdetz666 of course the gas stations have automatic pumps
BUT the gas price is more expensive here .. x_x
Nice... I went down such a "cliff" in my E60 :(
is that google map at 4:09 ?
True
@RandomnessRICKY really, that sick!
In the US only. In other countries only the DCT transmission.
Exhaust note sounds like ARSE!
@NinjTwo 8 series nice! V12? Americans would absolutely riot if gas cost that much. I never realized it was that much more expensive in Europe.
28.8 MPG, probably imperial gallons, so, around 24 mpg US. To give a good comparison, a BMW 540i can manage the same figures but it has half the horsepower and weighs less. This is very impressive, indeed.
Gas shouldn't really do anything to the actual paint at all. It might haze over the clear coat a bit, but that'll buff right out. Guess you still shouldn't risk it with such a beautiful car.
Always a great review. Mat, you have a very appealing way about you. But...you do look a bit out of place in this rig, it being a $100K car (in the States anyway). Must be nice being you, on that day for sure. I hope that some who buy this machine use it to its potential; but I guess that's highly unlikely. Carry on.
I want the V10 back in the ///M5 and the V8 back in the ///M3 instead of the V8 & V6 respectively!
@cheaniggachea it's the Eurotunnel lol!
comparison vid: This VS 2012 cls 63
For those that do not know, the gas mileage shown here is not the same as US gas mileage. That is the Euro cycle. It is much lower when translated for the US.
So don't get excited, a V8 560 hp BMW is not getting the same gas mileage as a 4 cylinder Ford Fusion. lol
at 1.41 i had to re-listen i thought he swore lol
@CalvinS63 Not as Awesome as the S1000rr still amazed at that machine.
Wrong on both counts. The M5 is available in the US and the US is the only market to get a six speed manual as an option, have a look at the website.
Great
Nice video , Just for info
in greece , it costs ~ 170 euro to full it :p
@CalvinS63 True that!! :)
Woohoo ! Bordeaux ! (@ 3:00)
Fell asleep half way, plus, who keeps the finger down on a starter button?
€170?! u filled up at the wrong station Matt!! :)
@y571 that comment made me lauigh..yes, we do actually :D
@Wash9102 The new M3 maybe a V6 though ;(
@200208195 well, I am a huge fan of the 5 series, but I simply feel that they are too big, to comfortable, to quiet, to distant,...for a truly sporty/fun feel. They are, however at home on long trips, highways and even on the occasional twisty road. But I simply don't see the point in having 500 + horsepower in a car of this type and would prefer two cars in my stable: a comfy limousine and a sporty little devil :D
but that's just me :)
Fuel bill is insane.
They offer a BMW M5 F10 manual for the American market.
117 euros is not bad. It's 100 euros to fill the tank of my 2002 316ti here in Finland :D petrol costs around 1,6 euros/litre...
he said €170
@@Fullersh1t 117 euros mate
Mat, the problem is you cannot drive M1 and 520d at the same time.
what were those tunnels at the end of the video? I've never seen something like that
Just let me see how bonkers quick it is
