Tyranid Warrior Magnetization Guide

  • Magnetization requires extra effort during assembly, but gives you the flexibility to use a model with any of its equipment and be future-proofed against Warhammer 40K rules changes.
    In this guide I demonstrate how to magnetize a Tyranid Warrior with the Boneswords, Scything Talons, and Venom Cannon options. The same principles will apply to any other melee weapon, and can be extrapolated to larger models like Hive Tyrants and Carnifexes.
    My recommended magnet sizes are 3mm x 2mm and 3mm x 1mm neodymium disc magnets, in the N48-N52 strength range. For monstrous creatures, 5mm x 2mm are perfect for arms and arm sockets.
    Be sure to buy your magnets from a reputable source. Some Chinese manufacturers misrepresent the strength of their magnets, so they may be labeled N52 but are actually significantly weaker. I get mine from JC Magnetics. Two other good stores are K&J Magnetics and Frenergy Magnets.

      I tried it that way at first, but got real nervous about having to bend the arms and scrape them on the torso to put them on and take them off- this way is significantly more work for sure, but means no risk of scraped paint or breakage.

    This is superb. Just what I was looking for. I've seen your stuff over on r/tyranids and honestly you are such a saint to the community. One quick question. What do you use to drill itself? I know you use the 3mm bit but are you holding some kind of grip and twisting? Is that all the force needed?

    • @CatgutPainting
      @CatgutPainting  4 года назад

      It's a $10 pin vise from Amazon. Basically it's just a simple chuck that holds the drill bit in place, and can spin independently of the handle. This lets you hold the handle firmly in your palm, and spin the bit with your thumb and forefinger. Plastic is soft, so with a decent bit it goes quickly.

    I have magnetized a box of warriors and the results have been pretty good so far. But I'm having some issues with the smaller weapons, like the deathspitter and the devourers. Do you follow the same steps as with the bigger weapons? I'm afraid of breaking the support arm, as it being tighter it seems that the 3 mm drill bit will tear it (doesn't seem like a 3mm by 1mm magnet will feet inside the supporting arm either).
    Thank you for your support, and keep up the good work.

    • @CatgutPainting
      @CatgutPainting  4 года назад +1

      Yes, I follow the same steps. It can definitely be tricky to drill into the support arms of the Deathspitters- if I mess it up, I usually just slice a millimeter off the end of the connector, glue my magnet to it, and then wrap the magnet in a bit of putty, just like I do on the arm joints. For the Devourers, I don't think it's even possible to drill into the support arm- I'd just glue a magnet to it, smooth out the join with putty, and call it a day.

    I tried this today but I had issues when I drilled all the way through and put the greenstuff inside . The magnets pulled together and squished the greenstuff
    So I tried again on another torso but not drilling all the way through just drilling almost through so the magnet sits just below the top of the socket.
    I also magnetized all the non bonesword melee weapons for 3 warriors and spinefists for 3 and will now in the morning do the boneswords and the two handed ranged weapons for 3. I am happy Gw gives you a 4th torso for a prime (will be my kill teams leader) so I can toss the one I drilled through and messed up.

    • @CatgutPainting
      @CatgutPainting  3 года назад +1

      Hey there. Yup, I have magnetized a Tyrannofex, and used the same 5x2mm magnets as on Carnifexes. It's perfect for the Fleshborer Hives and can manage on the Acid Spray, but is a little bit weak for the Rupture Cannon- however, the Acid Spray and Rupture Cannon can both touch the base while remaining parallel to the ground, so they stay in place that way. The arm slots aren't much bigger than on smaller creatures so you /might/ be able to do 6x3mm, but no bigger.

    So far I have fully magnetized death watch kill team, GSC neophytes and other alien hybrids, chaos marines and orks. I don't recall if the connecting parts were rounded or flat but I never cut away plastic and used putty. Why didn't you just drill a hole and put a magnet in it? Is it to have full control on the angle?

    • @CatgutPainting
      @CatgutPainting  3 года назад

      That's what I would prefer to do, and initially did on my Warriors. However, in this case the magnet is almost the same size as the limb. That means if the drill is at all off-center or goes in at an angle, it tends to get 'pulled' to the outer surface and then breaks out the side of the limb. At that point it's very hard to re-drill centered, so slicing off the joint as in this video is the only recourse. If you used 2mm magnets on Warrior limbs then just drilling would work fine, but I tend to prefer the strength of the larger magnets.

  • @lukeroberts440
    @lukeroberts440 4 года назад

    @CatgutPainting,
    What brands of glue do you use?
    We've always used $2 store 'industrial grade' super glue which works wonders at sticking everything together and you get 7 tubes for $2 (Aud) so bargain, but when doing actual precision work, the correct plastic and super glues are needed, and I'd rather see what non-GW based employees use brand wise. Great videos, really inspired by this to see about magnetising my rogue trader and 2nd edition Tyranid Warriors.

    • @CatgutPainting
      @CatgutPainting  4 года назад

      For plastic, I use Testor's plastic cement. For everything else, I use 'The Original Super Glue', mostly because it's the cheapest stuff I can find. I prefer the thin, runny superglue over thicker glues, and I particularly dislike gel superglue, but beyond that I'm not picky on brand.

    • @CatgutPainting
      @CatgutPainting  4 года назад +1

      Hey there, thanks for the praise. For Hive Tyrants, I might get to that eventually. My one Hive Tyrant is actually an old Forge World model, so it's a little different from the modern ones. I did run into issues with the wings being too heavy; my solution was to add a pin (a paperclip) to the arm, running parallel to the magnet, and drilling a small hole in the torso for it to slot into. That way the pin bears all the axial stress and the magnet just helps keep the arm securely in place. No idea what I'd do for a third socket.

    What bout 2x1mm for warriors? I use them for space marines and got a lot of them left

    • @CatgutPainting
      @CatgutPainting  4 года назад +1

      They'll work, albeit not as strongly, and may have issues holding up the larger guns (particularly Venom Cannons). If you use 2mm magnets, I would suggest slicing about a millimeter off the ball joint, then drilling into the flat surface with a pin vise and 2mm bit to insert the magnet.

  • @Walican132
    @Walican132 4 года назад

    Is drilling through the model really necessary? That seems like an area with a high margin for error.

    • @CatgutPainting

      The interior of the Warrior torso is hollow to begin with, so once you drill out the socket on either side you're left with a contiguous hole.

    Hey mate, I have been trying to follow this and I am running into a problem:
    I am trying to do this with some space marines, as practice before I move on to attempting this to my Tyranid warriors. But what happens is that I drill a whole in the mini, apply super glue, then the magnet, then I wait for the glue to dry. Then when I attach the arm to the torso the magnates literally rip each other out of the dried super glue. How do I stop this? (I am using the glue I get from the warhammer store itself btw).

At 0:21 you put in the measurements/sizes for the magnets. Do you know what those are in inches by any chance? (I'm in Canada, maybe that's why the store is showing them to me in inches).
