Patterned Tyranid Schemes Made Easy- NPS Method

- Here's the video you've been asking for, and which all my previous ones have been building up to: the logical process by which I devise patterned Tyranid schemes, using washes to drastically reduce the time requirements.
I've had a number of questions about whether Contrast will work in lieu of the two-layers-of-diluted-wash technique I discuss here. The short answer is yes, you can use a single layer of Contrast, but I've found it doesn't work /quite/ as well at getting the faux-highlighted effect. It's up to you whether the time saved is worth it.
For US viewers, be aware that you can get Army Painter washes on eBay for reasonable prices, if you don't have a shop that sells them locally.
And lastly: If you're having trouble following along or just want to see an example of this technique put into practice from start to finish, I've already got a demonstration video in the works.
Previous demo videos:

Blue Coconut Crab: • Tyranid BLUE 'Coconut ...

Peacock Mantis Shrimp: • Tyranid 'Peacock Manti...
Hermit Crab: • Tyranid 'Hermit Crab' ...

Loving the consistent content on Tyranids.
Such a great tutorial! I’d already been thinking about using real-world animals - specifically, orchid mantises - but it didn’t really hit me how important patterning is for minis! I’ve always thought the studio schemes were missing something and I think that patterning nails it on the head! I’ll have to give this process a shot.
really cool video!
I would love to see your take on other armies!
Love the coconut crab pattern it’s so organic looking. Probably the most eye catching Tyranids I’ve ever see.
Yeah it looks fantastic.
Its all fun and games until you realise you have to paint 200 of em Nids in that sceme...
I really appreciate your work, not just your excellent painting skills, but your succinct delivery. Top notch stuff.
What can I say other than thank you? I started miniature painting around half a year ago and these videos have been such an inspiration that I just got two boxes of tyranids to make my own color scheme based on this "NPS" method. Thanks a lot, catgut, keep going!
Excellent tutorial! You have a talent for clarity and structure.
Saw your nids on reddit the other day and thought to myself: "this guy needs to make a tutorial" and now look at that, its as high in quality as your minis. I dont even play nids, but it was interresting to watch nonetheless. Thank you, have a great time :)
Thank you for making paint content for Tyranids! I mean space marines are cool and all but it's nice to see somebody do interesting patterns and color schemes for a race like Tyranids. Not only that but also make easily digestible in video format. Again thank you! Also out of curiosity, how did you do the tails on the larger models? That rattle snake/ spine tail looks sick!
The tail on the old Forge World Hive Tyrant is the unmodified sculpt, painted the same way as the rest of the exoskeleton (so just two washes).
I started 40k 25 years ago, and always wanted a Tyranid army. Last Christmas I got the Tyranid starter box and finally got round to building the models and started thinking about a scheme, and I'm so glad I found your video. Now I'm off to look through the interwebs for some inspiration, thanks for a great video, and you have painted some fine Tyranid schemes there.
So glad to hear that! If you post anything to social media, I'd be interested to see what you come up with.
Thank goodness the RUclips algorithm showed me your channel, your paint schemes are incredible and your effort to make these high quality, complex looking nid schemes is greatly appreciated! Thank you for all the help so far and keep up the great work :)
I miss those variations that Forge World brought out of the Hive Tyrant, they were so badass... those models remind me of the 3rd Edition Codex cover, which is the best Tyranid artwork ever.
This is great stuff! I'm really impressed with how much you can do just with a couple layers of wash.
CRABS!
Is it possible to do a similar scheme but with citadel paints?
Damn!! I wish a tutorial with these beautiful colour variations would exist before I had started my actually colour scheme 😥. Thank you very much for this informative and very good described methods.
Sorry for my bad english
Regards
The best tyranid painting channel by far
This has got me amped for when the leviathan box comes out.
The guilliman to crimson to screaming skull to wraithbone is awesome. Might change the carapace but man thats cool
These are great ideas, I love the Mantis Shrimp scheme a lot!!
Can you make a video where you try contrast paints for washing a custom tyrand scheme?
Meanwhile here I am with my Rustoleum going brrrrrrrt.
Amazingly helpful...thanks!
I seriously appreciate and love your videos. Found you on Facebook and I’m following you on all your platforms! Keep up the great work
Thank you so much for this video. Although you are covering tyranids I would go so far as to say that the concepts apply to all miniatures. My favorite thing is that you are basing it on real world examples for inspiration. Marco Frisoni says (paraphrased) If you base your paining style on a miniature it can never be more than a less than copy of a miniature where as when you base it off of a picture or artwork it will stand on its own as a miniature. Your work exemplifies this well.
Saw your nids on reddit the other day and thought to myself: "this guy needs to make a tutorial" and now look at that, its as high in quality as your minis. I dont even play nids, but it was interresting to watch nonetheless. Thank you, have a great time :)
Anyone knows a coop looking predominantly purple animal?
With the new Leviathan boxset. Its nice to find your content.
No 2 of any of the dozens of Tyranids in my army have the same paint scheme…
I seriously wanna get into this (with tyranids as my army), but I just don't have the time or money for it
How did you do the wings on the coconut crab scheme?
I wash it the same as the 'fleshy bits' (one layer Red Tone, two layers of the exoskeleton mix), but before washing I traced veins (just simple lines) with VMC Brown Rose.
Where the F**K where you 2000 points ago?!
Is there a color wheel sample or diagram that also demonstrates the color scheme selection?
The coconut sheme reminds me of the peadot patter pn i used for marines and that i wanna use for my tau combat patrol
After the following sample scheme what are your plans for future videos? Glad you've been getting the subs, long may it continue!
One or two more samples going through this process, then getting into all the non-Tyranid-scheme content I have planned- mostly shortcut techniques and tricks (that will work on most models, not just Tyranids), along with magnetization.
@@CatgutPainting Fantastic, looking forward to it.
This is a ridiculously good video, and such a great timing for it too. I'm just about to start building my Tyranid army and I'm planning to have my own colour scheme for it, this video will help so much with it. Thank you!
That earned a sub. Nice ideas and well presented.
someone make a damn generator for this.
that big guy looks so badass
I Miss the old hive tyrant
I can confirm...although not exactly like yours. Using your coconut crab scheme..my hive tyrant looks like hes about to win golden demon. Good work
Fantastique !!! Merci 🙏
I just picked up a Tyranid combat patrol today and this has helped so much with figuring out what scheme I was going to use. I think ill go with a Blue monarch Butterfly scheme.
I think I'm going to base my Tyranid hive fleet on the Shin-Gojira scheme. :D
Nice dude
You know what? Thank you for all the work you‘ve put into tyranids. It‘s a shame that - despite your undeniably huge influence you‘ve had on the scene, your channel has comparatively few viewers, and by far too little attention.
Hi. Since this is the first of your videos that I've stumbled upon: Do you have more which are this abstract? I can learn all about applying paint on other channels, but *this* is something new to me.
Thank you very much for this, I think I am going to build a Tyranid Kill team later down the line as my fourth team (as I have a space hulk game that has sat on my shelf since 2015 with no paint on anything and the Genestealers in it can be used for Kill team so I would only need to buy some Warriors and some Gaunts to have all the allowable models for Kill Team
Your white is so white. Mine needs multiple coats. So I can't seem to do the dot efficiently.
hey... with a 3d printer, it's possible to print an army right?
Subbed!
Thanks! I tried pattern-painting Tyranids without researching and it turned out terrible! Saw this video and after applying some of your advice, I've had much better results!
Love your videos! Do you think you could do an imperial guard video?
Im gonna be honest, that coconut pattern looks so fucking good and its so cleanly painted it looks like printed on
Im doing macragge blue carrapace and naggaroth night body, im thinking now what patterns should i paint on his carrapace
That coconut-crab looks amazing! Thanks for sharing the NPS method, it sounds logical!
Would love to see if you could figure out an arachnid scheme from starship troopers for the tyranids.
Next time on the channel - 'nids with cutie marks!
Please don't stop creating content. Ever.
You should have shown pics of the thirty different test schemes
Great video and looking forward to what comes next
What I like about your NPS method, and your recent videos, is that it applies to more than just Tyranids. You can use these same methods (tweaked slightly) for just about any army period.
2:06 love this dude pretending to be a tyranid SO CUTE
Great video! Love the focus on designing a custom scheme. A lot of tutorials out there show you how to paint certain schemes and the painting techniques, but you focused on the conception stage. I like the examples of animals to draw inspiration from.
I love the green one it reminds me of Perfect Cell from DBZ
I can't wait to see your next one. I'm kind of leaning on using something like your scorpion color scheme but with the plates done in a different color than the body. Any recommendations for other colors I could add?
It would depend entirely on what sort of effect you want to go for- keep it subdued, or add a splash of color? The best thing is to find something IRL that inspires you; it makes the creative process much easier.
@@CatgutPainting maybe browns and blacks. I do like the idea of using the spot patterning like what you did on the mantis shrimp. I like the idea of using shades, glazes and washes to do the lion's share of the work. Hmm.
@@Whitewing89 You could start with a medium brown and do the spot highlighting up to white, then follow the dune devil scorpion tutorial from there onward. That'd give you an earthy, somewhat roach-like look.
@@CatgutPainting So white by the edge of the plates?
@@CatgutPainting Yeah i think i like that.
Heck ya! Thanks for this and I almost started a Tyranids army because of you. And HOLY SHIT your big models are gorgeous
This was an awesome video, thanks a bunch.
I would love to see you paint more complex creatures.
This guy's tutorials are unique af.
Thank you so much, videos like this help out new hobbyists and veterans looking to branch out alike.
Where did you get the head on your Hive Tyrant?
The model is an unmodified, out-of-production Forge World Hive Tyrant.
your schemes are beautiful.
I'd love to see a compilation of how other people have adapted this approach!
incredible man, great content :)
Your Tyranids are amazing
Really good and detailed tutorial, well done and thanks!
what was the nid in 8:09?
OOP Forge World Hive Tyrant.
would using gws contrast paint give you the same results as the inks/washes you used?
Not quite the same, but reasonably close. The custom mixes I use for the all-over wash provide a bit better shading and faux-highlighting, but Contrast can sub in directly for all the other washes without issue.
excellent stuff!!
Hiya,
How do you bend the rails of the gaunts
Boiling water and brute force- dunk in hot water for a few seconds, then bend with fingers.
@@CatgutPainting is it best to do before painting?
Definitely; the paint might crack if it's done after painting. Small bends might be okay, but I wouldn't risk it.
I wanted to use the official hivefleet Hydra color scheme but you opened my eyes.
I dont want to replicate the coconut crab pattern ( the temptation is real tho) but now i have to find my own killed pattern for the cannibal fleet.
How about using the Hydra colors with whatever pattern you like best? Blue with black patterning and some purple details would be a solid look.
@@CatgutPainting I was kinda going for these colors because the official Hydra theme is around these but that dirty pink or turned cream shade for the exoskeleton simply turns my stomach.
You did knock off a few walls there and now the possibilities are very, very interesting.
Hey there, first of all great explenation and beautiful painting. And second i've got a question. I have old tyranid models (not that great painted) and now I am thinking to re -paint them all. Is there a way to get rid of the old color, without damaging the model ?
Absolutely- do a google search for '40k paint stripping' and you'll find lots of methods.
@@CatgutPainting thx for the quick response. All I could find so far was a florcleaner which is working fine on most of the paint but is sadly not working on every paint even though it's all citadel paint.
@@5Guildwars5 You should be able to find either isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or denatured alcohol (methylated spirits) most anywhere. Those will remove the paint pretty well without harming the plastic.
@@CatgutPainting I will have a look at these thx 👍🏻 u are awesome 💪🏻
@@5Guildwars5 SuperClean (purple bottle) shreds paint off of minis without damaging the plastic. It can undo thin, weak plastic glue bonds though so you may have to reglue small dangly bits
Now I want to dump my 'ghost' theme and do the Crab style...
Aaaaaa, all the decisions!
:D
Great job. On painting and tutorial! Thank you!
Gteat painting, but dude....take some time to clean up the mold lines on your figures.
Ugh...I don't care if the studio used "interesting patterns" to break up the monotony of the schemes in the 3rd edition codex. The models from that era - e.g. the wannabe Alien look - were HORRIBLE. Teeny tiny legs, goofy smiles, and big giant heads that tipped over constantly. Forgeworld hasn't even had the decency to pay the Tyranids a visit in 10 years as they still use that awful aesthetic. One of the reasons why Tyranid schemes are often boring is because a lot of the models are boring (and old - Termagants and Hormagaunts are from 3rd edition), and there are no mechanical parts to breakup the organic parts. I'm not saying they should suddenly become part bionic, but they could definitely use some new troops models. To top it all off, they are all on bases far too small for their footprint. Genestealers on a 25mm?? They take up twice the space of a Space Marine!!! Every other faction has at least been updated to the correct bases. Back on topic... Exoskeleton on chitin is always going to present limited options compared to armor with dynamic edges and curves, connective hydraulics, sharp angles and contrasting textures between gloves and guns and swords, squad/company/faction markings, etc. The new Primaris Marines are a painter's dream, for example, whereas Tyranids are not. It takes an extraordinary effort to make them look good.
Tyranids largely look great and are one of the most visually interesting armies in the game. The variety of monsters and unique designs while still maintaining design cohesion is far beyond most other armies, especially any marine faction where you're lucky to have anything that isn't just an astarties with some shit glued onto him and no/a barely modified helmet. A nid army will feature a scattering of gaunts, of course, but I honestly fear for your mental health if you can look at an average nid table and say they all look the same unless your opponent just speedpainted them an hour before you played.
How do you transfer the paint schemes from the small guys to the big guys ?
I find when trying to use wash on the bigger models it comes out very blotchy.
Are you using one of the mixes I detail in this video? I find that the addition of the mixing medium + water helps the washes flow very nicely. You can see an example on a larger model at the 8:03 mark.
CatgutPainting I’ve only ever added medium to wash never water I’ll give it a go thank you
ever since I first saw this vid I've grabbed a box of niddies here and there and painted them all a different way experimentally, I don't even play 'nids... maybe I should play 'nids
