  • I show you my two computers that I have daily drove for a year. One had Pop OS and the other was Manjaro. For the most part my Linux experience has been really good. I have had no issues using Steam or playing games on either computer. I prefer Linux over Windows and will not go back to Windows anytime soon.

Gaming on linux is so goood, oh my goood, i cant believe iiiiit oooooo maaaah gaaawd. Talks 8minutes of nonsense, then launches a 2D game. Don't get me wrong, I'm using linux, but I dont lie to people, gaming is not that good as it is on windows, obviously. Period. It never will be. I'm using endeavouros which is an archlinux based distro, and arch/arch based are known for their versatility and gaming capabilities. I'm on bleeding edge with kernel and nvidia prop driver. I'm tearing blood every fucking day, because how bad experience I'm having with my nvidia card with linux. Also, don't believe the urban legend out there, AMD's Radeon is just as garbage as nvidia on linux. It's just "better" at out of the box experience, but OC'ing is another story (fan rpm for example is a nightmare to set up properly, just to list the simplest thing here). So yea. Wayland + nvidia = flickers the shit out of you. X11 + nvidia: its more stable, but you don't get that smooth experience. Its no where near complete, no where near compatible. Yes - steam proton and lutris. NO! It's an utter garbage, you gotta tweak every single shit to make it possible to launch. You need a programmer centric brain, or else you're fucked. If you use games out of the box, you're not utilizing your GPU/CPU enough, and you wasted $$$ for no reason. Period. That is where linux is right now.

    • @Anonymous-zo6so
      @Anonymous-zo6so 4 месяца назад

Flickering is a problem of newer Nvidia drivers, as far as I know 535 version of Nvidia drivers works fine on Wayland. Also I don't know what do you mean about "tweaking" because all popular games are compatible with linux. Some no name games or online that's the problem, but it's the company's fault, not Linux's.

I believe we've hit a crossroads where Linux is 'good enough' and Windows 11 is 'bad enough' that switching over genuinely has some merit. I switched completely 5 months ago because I grew too annoyed with W11. Without my numerous tweaks to remove the ads, spyware, bloat and whatnot it simply isn't bearable. Initially started out by distrohopping on my laptop. Fedora was lighter, faster, improved battery life and had better gestures/touchscreen. I'm happy to see others have had such a good experience.

Hey, I'm glad you've found linux such a good experience for the past year. About that lag with your controller, recently on a clean install with arch on my workbench I was getting a missive delay on my controllers, for reference a PS4 controller. However I fixed it by going to steam -> enabling big picture mode (view -> (enter big picture mode)) -> Settings -> Selecting my controller -> then calibrating it. Linux compatibility for games has gotten better lately, and I think that's thanks to the Steam Deck. I myself started using Linux back in November when I built my new PC, but not exclusively though. I still have a separate SSD for Windows just to run the occasional Call of Duty Warzone or Destiny 2 session. Even then I stay with Linux more than Windows by choice. I use Ubuntu myself and it's been a great experience for me so far. And personally, you can't go wrong with Pop OS or Manjaro either. They're good choices too. I believe this year is going to be an interesting one because, while I don't think it will be "The year of Linux", it will be a considerable change in the wind for Windows.
    Also welcome aboard!

Nice, to see ppl change to linux, even for gaming.
i am using Linux Mint Mate 20.3.
For reasons i changed the look and feel into appearance like win2k, because i had til win7 all Windows look like win2k. I love the clean and simple look of an OS. So i've done with my Linux, because I'm used to it since then. If someone comes to me, see my Desktop, he thinks, i am using Windows, old style anyway, if i am using those alternative linux software, then someone asks me, what software this is, and asking, where to d/l. So if i have to tell, its Linux, and wont run on his Windows, so hes shocked, because it doesnt look like "linux" (ppl thinking, Linux has to look much different to windows some way) and because all software, including game are still working. even i i buy a brand new game on Steam, i just installs ist and run it. w/o any issues, out of the box. so noone can tell, if its linux or windows.
its pretty nice, to shock ppls, they think linux wont work at all.
I switched now to linux the 4th time. and other periods of switching to linux, where i had to switch back to windows, was several games, which wont work on linux (StarCitizen, which now works like a charm, Satisfactory, which now runs perfekt (with epic launcher, not steam!) and New World as it cames out, i HAD to switch from Win7 to win10, against my will, to play this game, because it wont run on linux. now it does and very stable and smooth), but this time, since 5 Month for now, i can say, it was worth it, and i have deleted the second windows partition.
no way back now and im fine. i am using win10 in QEMU, which i passed through a second GPU, so, if i have to use win10 in virtual machine, it feels like an standalone PC, because of the dedicated GPU for exact one Game, which not runs under Linux (FiveM). And my Aquacomputer Controller, for it there are no Linux-options.
I can always say, Linux gaming is more possible these days than a year ago for example. And now its the best time to switch to Linux.
Windows is since win10 no Option to use it any more for me.
Win7 was best system ever made from Microsoft, (except Win2k and WinXP) but win10+ aren't an option any more.

Different desktops is why the terminal is often used in online help (due to the mentioned simplification of assumptions). It is also really good for automation. Here is a tip. Get the terminal to tell you the name of all the installed programs and put that into a text file with those names and the install command. Next time you reinstall or move to a new computer just run that file and walk away for lunch. Then you can come back to your computer being set up for your work instead of having to babysit some downloads and then manually go to every wizard.

And in Manjaro, I started to feel like it's getting slower in every update so I left. In the end, I ended up using EndeavourOS for now and I've been having a blast with it. I'm a tech savvy 15 y/o who discovered my love for the advanced side of computers in the summer of 2020 and along the way I found out that Linux existed and tried it out after LTT released a video on it in 2021 and I fell into the rabbit hole and Loved every second of it and will never go back! I would call myself an intermediate user because I can use and figure out apt, rpm and pacman based distros just fine it's just that I cannot read the arch wiki because they format it in a weird confusing way and my definition of advanced user would be to be able to install vanilla arch Linux. My setup at the moment is a Dell XPS 15 9510 that I got refurbished on black Friday and I saved up two years for it and I have a love hate relationship with it in terms of Linux, hardware wise I love it but software it is iffy at times, I do wish I could have bought something else with more Linux compatibility but oh well the warranty is over. Software wise I have a dual boot setup with Tiny10 (Custom Win10 debloated) and Tuxedo os with Kde and I use Win10 0.5% of the time and Linux the rest. I might actully switch my laptop over to Debian unstable one of these days for hardware support reasons so I hope that goes well.
If you did not read that wall of text about my Linux experience it's fine but what I do want you to know about is some people in the community are toxic to newer people like you or I but just look in the right places for support (Beginner friendly of course) and there is nothing wrong with a simple google search to solve it and also I'm happy for your happy journey into our wonderful community and I hope you get warm and cozy with Linux!

All the terms for Linux is what gives me hesitation. Distro? GTP? I've used computers for years, mainly windows and I touched Mac briefly in college. But never thought of the terms and I feel like I would need a computer language dictionary to really navigate through what people are talking about. But I do learn fast, and I'm willing to work through some stuff if it would allow me more control and freedom over how my computer runs and doesn't bloat me out with junk that lags my system..i just want a lean system with workable programs for writing and creative projects, drawing, maybe animating, maybe gaming. And not have to fret or fight over getting features to work all the time.

BF5 works flawlessly, War Thunder is natively supported and i have World of Warships installed through Wine, using Lutris using the windows installer as the steam version requires an entire new account and i already have years of progress in that game from playing on windows. Clearly, most gamers are going to use windows and probably should, but if you are sick of windows and are looking for a way out, know that there is a competent alternative that is also fun to use and free.

Arch-based systems are not better because they "update faster" all that means is that its more likely the maintainers will do something incompetent like ship a bugged version of the most popular bootloader and pretend they did nothing wrong when they brick a shitload of peoples systems. If someone is recommending you, a beginner, an arch-based distro they better be willing to help you out when inevitably something breaks.
Considering on Pop most of the programs you are using will be Flatpaks they're already gonna be fairly up-to-date. You generally wont notice a difference between that and Arch. But your core system (such as your desktop environment and bootloader) will be more stable and update less.
